Porterhouse is right on the main drag in Killarney, you can't miss it. It appears to be quite fancy but it's actually quite welcoming for a couple with a 9-year old kiddo. The staff was very friendly and warm, the service was quick and seamless and the food was good but wouldn't say it was spectacular. It wasn't terribly pricey though so can get behind 'just good' food for a reasonable cost. Also, the layout of the place is really fun, lots of individual almost private dining rooms that make it a lot quieter even though it was packed to gills when we were there. Definitely worth a stop but probably not a place to go out of your way to visit. read more

We had an awesome meal at this unique bar/pub/restaurant for our final night in Ireland. The inside is totally unique-all the seating is divided up into tiny rooms or booths so it feels VERY private and cozy. We had a view to the front street so also good people watching. The menu has lots of inventive twists on the classic Irish pub menu. We started with the warm garlic bread with Brie and honey-delicious and sticky (bit they give you wet wipes). We also tried their version of a wedge salad which was fine but pales a bit when Compared to its American cousin. The real standout for uniqueness was the 7 oz filet served at the table on an 800 degree stone. It comes out seared in the kitchen on the stone so you can then finish it to your liking (hint: slice it to make things easier and faster). The steak came with several sides including patatas bravas, onion rings and more and at €46 was a decent deal. We shared all the courses and it was plenty of food. The modest wine list has several by the glass options but no real standouts. Glasses come in Two sizes. I REALLY enjoyed the smoked old fashioned drink with earthy woodsmoke trapped then released from the glass at the table. It's a bit tough on the servers-the layout-as it is harder to keep an eye on your customers so expect service to feel a little off/leisurely. We went on a Saturday, and we waited a bit. No problem. Hung out at the bar, but would recommend making reservation in advance. Scallops on a bed of potato cake was good, very tasty. I got the ribeye sandwich and wish I had gotten something different. I also got a side iceberg Caesars lettuce salad and the dressing was freaking good. It was the highlight of my meal. This was a lovely restaurant me and family visited when in Killarney. We had great service from our waitress and got great recommendations for vegetarian/vegan options as well as the pretty extensive dessert menu. Thoroughly enjoyed our dinner and service at Porterhouse! We stopped in off a recommendation from our hotel's front desk and we were happy we did! The menu had a good variety of offerings and prices. Our group started with a round of drinks: wines, a local beer, and a craft cocktail. The Stags Night was a take on an old fashioned with sweet and nutty notes. For our mains: the caesar salad, chicken tenders, beef and brisket burger, wedge salad, and a side of fries to share. All items had great flavor! Just go in knowing the chicken tender meat does not taste like in the states. We ended with a warm chocolate brownie to share and it came with vanilla ice cream. Our server, Trish, was wonderful! The food was excellent. Burger with brie, bacon, and sweet onions olus fries; scallops served on top of potatoes with bacon; and potato & leek soup for our table. Everyone was pleased with their meal. The service was friendly and fast. Many of the kitchens in this town close at 9 p.m. , but Porterhouse accommodated us at 9:30. We sat in a back booth. I don't think they were prepared correctly as all four of them were just breaded shells nearly sans cheese. However the Brie bacon jam burger was killer. It was very good, and for an 8oz patty, it was still edible without needing a fork. The Parmesan rosemary whatever aioli fries are kickass. What a great place to grab a steak and a pint. This restaurant was recommended by a local and now o know why. The ribeye steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare and the shrimp melted in my mouth. We really enjoyed this place! It can get pretty busy so make sure you have reservations if you're coming in any later than 6. Real disappointed with our experience with Porterhouse. Starts with the ability to make reservations. Cannot call and speak to anyone. Reserve must be made online. Then they require a credit card in order to charge you 10 euros per head if you cancel within 2 hours. I am actually ok with all of that. Issues comes in that their online menu was way off. They said Lamb shank was out of season. They were out of fish of the day and beef and brisket burger. Those were the three items our table of six came for. We left after getting our drinks and had amazing lamb shank and fish and chips at neighboring restaurant. Gave Porterhouse the 2nd star because staff was nice and drinks were good. read more

The food was meh. The service was poor. Can't believe this place gets such good reviews on Yelp and recommendations from our hotel. We were at a small two-top and were splitting appetizer, salad and a main. The main was a pricey fish dish. They brought everything at once, and the table was so jammed it was awkward. The fish dish became cold as we rushed to eat the appetizer and salad. The salad was nothing short of disgusting- swimming in dressing and topped by deep fried chicken tenders. Bizarre. We learned this is the way it is in Ireland - our 38 Euro bottle of wine was dumped off by a busboy, screw on lid intact. When we looked at him to serve it he said "you want me to pour it?" incredulously. We poured it ourselves, to say the least. Anyway- it was one of our more expensive dinners in Killarney and in Ireland in general and I heartily do not recommend it. read more

The Porterhouse in Killarney We went here on two different days. The first day we had the loaded vegan potato skins and some cocktails. The potato skins were okay. I've never had loaded VEGAN potato skins before, but personally felt that they could have used some more seasoning of some sort or maybe hot sauce on the side. I do admit that they were cooked perfectly and brought out in a fast and timely manner and were plenty hot in temperature. I had a gin tonic. It was really tasty and prepared in a beautiful manner. It was just the right amount of gin and just the right amount of tonic. Let me just tell ya, that most restaurants in Ireland, don't necessarily have a speciality cocktail menu, so you'll have to know what you want for them to make! The second day I ordered the vegan pasta dish with vegan cheese! I enjoyed the vegan potato skins a lot more than the pasta dish, but the potato skins wouldn't be filling enough as a main entree. I really like how they put some vegan cheese shreds on the side of the dish to add in, but I don't think that the ingredients chosen in the dish matched as well as they should have. Now I love black olives, but in this dish I think that a different choice of olives, such as kalamata would have been better. I did like the nuts that were in the dish because it gave a nice crunch. Lastly, a little more tomato pasta sauce would have been nice. Anyways, all around. The Porterhouse was one of my favorite stops in the area because of the multiple labeled vegan items on the menu. Cute place, seems to be very authenticity Irish. Got here around 9pm on a Tuesday and there was live music. The special app was a pulled pork crostini, and it was delicious. Husband got the lamb shank that was amazing and I got chicken fajitas. They were interesting; the chicken was in a sauce that was almost like general tsos. It came with guac and salsa that were both out of a package. Service was slow, but they brought us each a glass of wine to compensate for it. I ordered the 7 ounce Angus burger, and it came out pretty good however I think all of the side with frozen or canned. that usually isn't a bad thing but for the price I was paying for my burger, I would like things to be a bit more fresh. After I completed my meal, I asked for the check which took about 30 minutes to arrive due to the waitress forgetting about my request and I'm guessing due to the amount of people that had arrived since. The saving grace to this place is the awesome selection of beers and whiskey. I would definitely go here again, because I like to have a place two tries. Big restaurant with live music on a Sunday night. Lots of vegetarian options, but the rest of the main courses are all meat and appeared to be very heavy. No fish on the menu. The stuffed mushroom appetizer was not what we expected. 4 stuff mushrooms that had been deeply fried. It was fine, but I wouldn't recommend. I got the Caesar salad, which has bacon in it. I didn't add the chicken. It was okay. It was heavily dressed, which I didn't mind and it was very big and filling, but the lettuce had no crunch even when it was first brought out. My sister had the vegetable fajitas. The veggies were very tasty, but not a Mexican flavor. Tasted more like a soy sauce or teriyaki sauce on the veggies. While not Mexican, I would recommend this dish although do not get excited about the guacamole that comes with it. We also ordered the baileys cheesecake and the chocolate cake with salted caramel ice cream. We ate them, but I wouldn't order them again. Killarney has a lot of dining options. While nothing here was bad, with so many options, I would venture elsewhere in the hope of finding something better. read more
