Subpar food and subpar service. Maybe I overestimated that people in Ireland would know how to cook a steak given the sheer amount of cows (basically that outnumber the people in this tiny town), but this was abysmal. Filet was overdone, and had no flavor (had to be drowned in peppercorn sauce that was basically just cream). Apps were nothing memorable. Got the goat cheese tart (one note) and the cauliflower (no flavor and covered in a mound of cheese). Guinness and whisky sour were both fine. Service could really use some work- our waitress argued with us on the doneness of our steak and insisted that it was perfect. We're tourists from a big city and are totally fine paying to support the local economy, but this was a weird hill for her to die on... small town means maybe nothing better to do... read more

Lovely restaurant, at which a group of us had lunch. The folks there adapted the main menu for us for more lunch-sized portions, which worked out great! Excellent beef -- I had a small steak, and someone else had a beef Wellington. All delicious and high quality. But if you really want a treat -- have dessert. Save room, walk your steps -- whatever you need to do, because whatever any of us had was outstanding. If it was this good for lunch, I'd love to go back for a special dinner! read more

We came to Mulcahy's for dinner on a Friday evening. It wasn't easy to get a reservation but we did get one for 8:30 and thankfully were seated a little after 8. This was an excellent dinner in a restaurant with a fantastic vibe. There are a lot of tables but they are spaced reasonably to give you privacy. It is a bit loud especially as patrons keep drinking, but we could have a conversation easily. Our service was absolutely first rate and our server helped us choose excellent dishes. For a starter I choose the wild mushroom fish that was fear. The sauce is a bit rich, not overly so. The flavor was fantastic. Our entrees were 2 specials, the salmon cooked in paper and the pan fried black sole. They were both great. The fish was delicious and it was prepared extremely well. I REALLY wanted to give Mulchahy's five stars, but given my experience, I think four is generous enough. We checked into our lodging accommodations and our host told us to go there for dinner. Prior to arriving in Kenmare, I had tried making a reservation but had no luck getting a response, so when our host suggested we walk up and see if we could snag a couple of seats, we did just that. To our surprise, we sat down for dinner without issue around 7pm on a Wednesday. Initial service was prompt, as our waitress took our drink order. Another waitress swung by a few minutes after for the food order, which was followed by the arrival of a bread board that was accompanied by butter and tapenade (really good stuff!). The food came out rather quickly. My partner got the Beef and Guinness pie, which was excellent. I ordered the Halibut. Let me just say that the presentation of my dish was fantastic, but the fish itself was not. It was overcook (see photo) and, thus, really dry. I was pretty disappointed in this because I had high hopes. Given a long day driving the Ring of Kerry, we decided to skip dessert. We then spent the next 10 minutes trying to get someone's attention to bring us the check. I wish we would've had a dedicated waitress for the entire dinner; instead, we had 3-4 servers, so continuity was lacking. Would I return again? Probably, but I'd try an equal restaurant first before returning here based on my experience with the Halibut and service. read more

Mulcahy's is a really fantastic restaurant in Kenmare which is Michelin recommended, and I can understand why if I base it off food alone. Irish fare can get repetitive, but they have elevated it so that it's still comforting but it's elegant and refined. We had the potato skins to start, which were really miles apart from American potato skins. They're crispy bits of potato and a light oniony dip. Delicious even if a bit hard to eat. My salmon entree was wrapped in filo dough and stuffed with spinach, accompanied by green veggies. It was out of this world. My only issue was that the service was so completely lacking. We were ignored so many times. I think it was just an off night for them. Definitely check this out if you're in the area. read more

We got lucky and we're able to snag two seats at the bar for dinner. Great service all around! Started with the potato skins. These were literally strips of potato skins that are fried until crispy, then salted and served with a dip on the side. The risotto was so good I regretted getting the smaller portion. The scallops were very good and loved the cabbage that was served with it. The brisket was the real standout. Served with tiny pickled onions it was tender and just fell apart. I was lucky to be given a very tiny taste. Didn't get a good picture however, it was a generous portion. Call ahead for a table if you want to be sure you get seated. read more

Stopped in without a booking on a summer Wednesday evening and they were quickly able to accommodate us, although had we been a half hour later(7:45-8), I think it would of been reservations only. Very small bar so I wouldnt count on getting bar seats for dinner. Looks like a pub from the outside but very modern yet sophisticated inside...although not too stuffy or fancy! Amazing food. I had a salmon special wrapped in pastry, and my husband had the brisket , both were cooked perfectly and came out very hot. Shared a nice bottle of Sancerre. Very friendly service although still trying to figure out the server situation in IRE, as multiple people stop and you don't necessarily get the same person the whole time...a non-issue though as everyone was prompt and friendly. Overall would definitely recommend for a nicer night out if you are not looking for pub food in Kenmare! read more

This place was amazing! Later, I saw all the award acknowledgements and 'Michelin guide recommended' stickers on their window and I understood why. Ambience is dimly lit, upscale yet still casual. We were served slices of brown bread and warm rolls alongside an olive spread and a soft creamy butter. The bread platter was a great start! For my dinner, I ordered the chicken breast au jus and it was probably the best chicken dish I've ever had! The meat was so tender and moist and it was flavorful! We also ordered steak with onion rings. I had a taste of this- it was tender enough to melt in your mouth! The waitress brought out 3 sides which she said came with our dinner. I was kind of confused because I don't know which dishes came with these sides, which were all different. The one that we all loved was the potato coquette. Wasn't crazy about the other 2 sides. Others in my group ordered the scampi with mari rose with a side of pasta- I didn't try this but it was another hit and completely polished off! Finally, we ordered the apple tart! You have to order this at the beginning with your dinner but make sure you do because it was one of those OMG moments when it came and I took the first bite! It is fairly large, meant to be shared by 2 people but could easily be shared by 4. It was served hot, and smelled so good! The apple pieces were perfect; soft yet firm, sweet yet tart and the butterscotch sauce was the perfect topping. Even those at our table who don't like apple pie loved this dish! Although prices are reasonable, the portion sizes are a bit small. read more

It was a quiet Monday evening around 630pm when my wife and I stopped in for dinner. No problem at all with no reservation in the quieter month of October. We were sat in the back far from the breeze coming in and out the front door. Several folks served us that evening as a bit of a team effort and all of them were very friendly and welcoming. They walked us through the menu and helped us make our perfect selections. They offered a few half bottles on the wine menu of which we picked a winner Chilean merlot named Torreon de Paredes for a very fair price. My wife selected the scallops and I went big with the filet and onion rings. Her scallops were beautifully presented with dallops of puréed cauliflower mash in between. The scallops were well prepared and she loved the cauliflower but wish she was served more if it. My steak was expertly prepared to a medium rare temperature and a good sized portion at that. The rings were crisp and tasty as well. Save room for dessert and order the hot apple tart in advance with whipped cream and ice cream. It was so good and almost too much for the two of us to polish off. read more

Best meal that I had while in Ireland!! As another reviewer has mentioned, the name of the restaurant is Mulcahy's Wild Garlic Restaurant- so look out for Mulcahy's when trying to spot this place. We started with the chorizo and goat cheese with beets apps: both were so flavorful and perfectly executed. I went with the corn-fed chicken which was the most insanely moist/delicious chicken that I have ever had. For dessert we went with the Apple tart tatin which was INSANE- the absolute standout. A large freshly made tart with a crispy outside and soft inside served with icecream, creme fresh and caramel sauce. OMG I will dream about returning to Ireland and eating this tart. read more

If you are anywhere near the Ring of Kerry, take whatever time and effort are needed to enjoy a meal at Wild Garlic. The food was...well...incredible. I started with a warm goats cheese salad served on top of a toasted brioche. My monkfish was cooked to perfection and lightly sauced to bring out the flavour of the high-quality fish. Some gastronomic flair was thrown in to add subtle and flavourful elements to the dish. Our mains came with a lovely side of roasted seasonal vegetables and one of the best potato gratin dishes I have ever tasted. I ended with an exquisite apple and berry crumble. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed in a modern decor. We were warmly greeted and treated as friends and regulars from the moment we walked in the door. The service was efficient and attentive without being the slightest bit overbearing. Wild Garlic easily joins my best of Irish restaurants list. The place was quite busy even somewhat off season, so booking a table is recommended. read more

Six of us stopped in for dinner while cycling in the Kenmare area. Modern decor but maintained some of the coziness of its former life as a pub. Only two beers on tap but nice selection of wine, including half bottles. The bread was fresh and was nicely accompanied by a goat cheese spread. Do not eat here. We went with a group of 12 people and four of us began vomiting two hours later from food poisoning. The restaurant was unaccountable and seemed to try and blame other meals that we had although each of the ill people had eaten at separately during that day. This place was, and once again is, called Mulcahys, so look for that awning if you're trying to track it down. My wife and I stopped in here when Packie's was booked up, and we were thoroughly happy that it was. The staff were extremely friendly, and the interior is nicely appointed and rather modern, which is a nice change of pace compared to most of Kenmare's more rustically-decorated restaurants. We had an outstanding meal at Mulcahys/Wild Garlic--Beef Wellingtons and wild mushroom risotto for each of us, both cooked perfectly. A variety of potatoes and mixed vegetables came with the meals. including an especially delicious colcannon. For dessert, profiteroles. So, so good. read more

More upscale dining than casual. Menu offers many unique items as well as several traditional Irish dishes, but with interesting twists in the recipes. Food and service are great. A good wine list too. We didn't make reservations, and they were great at accommodating us, but seated us in the front outside the main dining area, which felt odd at times. This is a farm to table restaurant that was suggested by our host Helen at the Cleo apartment. What a wonderful suggestion. They started us with some extraordinary brown bread, butter and olive tapanade. Then an amuse bouche of feta cheese arrived. We ordered a warm goat cheese salad for the table to share. The people in our party ordered the lamb shank, the pork belly, the free range chicken and the wild mushroom risotto. THe person who had the pork belly said it was the best meal he had ever eaten.
