My wife and I had the pleasure for a short visit to Kenmare and we decided to have dinner while we were there. We wandered down the two main streets in the "downtown" area and chanced upon The Mews, near the end of the block, with an entrance off of a small side road.
We arrived in the early evening and were greeted warmly by the co-owner Maria (with her husband Gary) and offered a table in the beautifully decorated restaurant (OK, so everyone in Ireland was very friendly and warm!). Our waitress was also extraordinarily warm and asked about where we were from, how we were enjoying Ireland, and took an interest in us beyond what I have experienced in restaurants in countries around the world.
The menu was outstanding, offering many different options for all tastes. My wife and I are vegetarian (we eat fish), and there were at least 6-7 options for us to choose from, as well as more options for meat eaters. I could not decide--everything sounded so good! First, the waitress brought wonderful renditions of what we had is several restaurants in Ireland, currant bread and brown bread. Both were excellent and were served with a wonderful pesto spread or the heavenly Kerry butter (and I am not a big fan of butter). We both ended up having the tomato and red pepper soup as a starter. It was outstanding! We savored every drop. In the end, we both ended up ordering a main dish of split pea dal in a crusty filo dough, even though the fish dishes sounded great as well. I am not exaggerating when I say this--this dish is the best food I had in Ireland and one of the best dishes I have ever had in a restaurant! The flavors were truly wonderful, but it was not just about the taste. The chef was a master at blending spices so that they were bold in flavor but subtle on the tongue, and left a lingering after-taste that is beyond describing. I've only felt this mastery of seasoning at one other restaurant in my 55 years (and I have eaten in many restaurants in many countries). Everyone needs to try this dish!
Other things of note were the eclectic wine list with some nice vintages from many countries and a desert list that had my mouth watering but my stomach groaning. We passed on desert, but I am sure it would have been as outstanding.
The restaurant is a gem not only for Kenmare but for all of Ireland. This is the place you want, no---MUST eat. Even if it is a long drive (we were staying in Beaufort, just west of Killarney). Bravo to Maria, Gary, and the entire hard-working and wonderful serving staff! Thank you for a truly special dining experience. read more
