A Taste of Hope is a food-focused small group from Hope City Church. We are foodies and also food critics dedicated to exploring and evaluating local culinary offerings. Recently, we visited Chabela, 102 E. Broad St. where we enjoyed a variety of dishes and beverages. Our starters included a delightful grilled romaine salad, which was a first for our group and quickly became the table's favorite -- simply outstanding. The ambiance of the restaurant was pleasant, with lovely decor and music that was appropriately subdued, enhancing our dining experience. The table settings contributed to a comfortable atmosphere. We sampled the Georgia cheese platter, featuring an excellent selection of cheeses paired with pepper jelly, honeycomb, and candied pecans. The pairings complemented the cheeses beautifully, and the fresh, soft faccio was particularly impressive. For beverages, we enjoyed the Amethyst Blueberry Ginger Mint on Ice, a non-alcoholic drink that was refreshingly zingy and palate-cleansing, along with a classic lemonade. For dessert, we shared the crème brûlée, which was simply exceptional -- a highlight of the meal. However, the sweet tea served was not as sweet as expected. Our waiter, Anthony, was friendly and pleasant, though his presentation was somewhat lacking in professionalism, which was noticeable given the restaurant's upscale ambiance. Our main courses included a shrimp and risotto dish that exemplified excellence. The risotto was perfectly cooked, with a creamy, bright, and light sauce, and the shrimp and vegetables paired harmoniously. The seared grouper served on a bed of spinach with dill lemon cream was another standout; the fish was cooked to perfection, and the sauce complemented the dish without overpowering it. The presentation was appealing, and every element was thoughtfully prepared. We also enjoyed the maize or hummus with grilled vegetables, which was delicious. The vegetables were roasted to perfection, and the deep-fried flour component added a delightful crunch -- though its name escaped us, it was a memorable addition. The grouper cakes, however, were disappointing, as only one was served despite the menu listing it as an "S" portion meant for sharing. The cake was somewhat spicy and not as shareable as anticipated. Additionally, the smashed potatoes fell short -- they were lukewarm and lacked the expected flavor. Overall, Chabela provided a wonderful dining experience with numerous standout dishes. Our group looks forward to exploring more of Savannah's culinary scene and sharing our critiques.
Amazing place! You must stop here for dinner, but be sure to make a reservation first. This place is an absolute gem. The focus on farm to table. We are both gluten free and they took excellent care of us and there were plenty of options. We began our meal with a a delicious grilled ceasar salad with cornmeal fried oysters. It was phenomenal, those oysters were out of this world good. Next we devoured a filet, mushrooms and potatoes that were cooked to perfection. We ended our meal with a orange cream creme brulee. Such a wonderful meal and great service.
What an incredible culinary experience from start to finish. Highly recommend if you are looking for a true foodie experience unique to Savannah. Every dish was thoughtful and perfectly executed. Favorites were the tomato burratta salad, deviled eggs, and mushroom pasta. They also know how to make a mean cocktail. We were a big loud group and the server did an amazing job managing us, thank you. The ambiance is a vibe itself and matches well with the space. Simple and effective. Do not sleep on this place, it was amazing!
Visited ChaBella for dinner on a Tuesday night. I went in OpenTable to make a reservation the same night around 5 pm and it showed they didn't have anything earlier than 8 pm however when we showed up it was very quiet; there were plenty of empty tables and it didn't get more full while we were there, so not sure why OpenTable was that way. We would have preferred to come earlier. We opted to sit on the outside garden patio which was very romantic and quaint. I like that for the tables of two they placed the chairs next to each other as opposed to seating them facing each other. There was an old b&w movie being projected on the building's wall and they had cute hanging swings. The patio wasn't too crowded. There was a large family at one big table and then a couple smaller tables. They only had one server covering the patio and service was very slow. I tried the Toasted Coconut cocktail - it was tasty, not too, too sweet. To start, we shared the caprese. The burrata was very good and I loved all the flavors. For my main, I had the grouper and my fiancé got the caramelized onion tagliatelle & added bacon. The grouper dish was light and good; nothing that wowed me. My fiance couldn't eat much of the pasta dish - it was very heavy. Once our food came, we never really saw our server again. Pretty much everyone cleared out and we were waiting for him to come around and bring us our bill. We got stuck there an additional 10+ minutes longer than we needed to be. If we were to come back, we'd try other dishes. It has a lot of potential - our experience was just a miss
Cha-Bella is a farm to table restaurant and it's little further away from a lot of the tourist spots. I would say reservations are a must. Service : 5 stars. Our waitress was good and provided us some good recommendations. Food: the bread was so good and adding the ricotta cheese and olive to it was so good. We fought who could have the remaining cheese left on the plate. I had the grouper and asked if the could put crab on it. Glad I made that decision. My husband had the lamb and enjoyed it. My friend has the shrimp and crab risotto and savored every bite of it. I don't have a photo of the tagliatelle with pesto, but the two people at the table said it was only ok. They had to ask for salt to give it some taste. All in all everyone enjoyed their meal. I'm giving this place a thumbs up and definitely worth a visit.

This restaurant was so delicious and you can taste the fresh ingredients in the food. We really enjoyed our farm to table dinner. The meal was wonderful my husband really loved the beef of fillet, he said it was cooked perfectly. I order the the shrimp & scallop saffron risotto, it was so delicious and both meals where large portions. Make sure you make a reservation and get one for the outside It's beautiful and creates a very relaxing dining experience. Our service Bryce was wonderful and very knowledgeable. I also have a gluten allergy and they had no issues making sure my meal was GF. They also have GF desserts. We got the key lime pie to go. It was good and a nice late night treat. Not one complaint about this restaurant or our dining experience here read more

Ask for Jackson for your waiter. The way he describes the menu makes you drool before you see the food. I started with bourbon sampler that comes with fried pork belly, sugared bacon and bacon egg rolls. The bacon is just purely sinful. The pork belly with the bbq sauce. Insane. The egg rolls were weird but good. The bourbon was awesome. Bourbon. Rye. Sour mash go with the rich bacon like a fat kid and cake. Jackson talked me into getting the pork chop. At the time I'm thinking, a pork chop??? I was hesitant but went with his suggestion. Omg so glad I did. I don't know what the chef did but it was the most moist perfectly cooked chop I've ever had. Perfect spice bark with mouth watering pork. It comes with bacon Brussel sprout with a balsamic glaze. So good I had to finish it. As I'm devouring my chop Jackson brings out a rib eye steak. It looked so good so yeah I'll be going back. read more
DELICIOUS!!!! This restaurant's food is worthy of 5 stars. We began with the Creole Style Grouper Cakes. The flavor of the two cakes beamed with cilantro, celery and bell pepper. The cakes were garnished with a impeccable caper berry remoulade. For our main course my wife enjoyed the Cast Iron Hog Chop which was a very large perfectly prepared medium boneless pork. It was accompanied by a sage bread pudding and bacon brussel sprouts with molasses glaze. The differing but charming taste of this dish alone was worth the price. I had the pappardelle romesco, a wonderful combination of pasta, eggplant, artichokes, tomatoes, Caramelized onions and Parmesan and basil. This vegetarian dish was unique and very satisfying. Our wait staff was attentive and helpful. The only negative was the volume in the dinning room. The interior is all hard surfaces and we were surrounded by large parties, which were having an enjoyable time. It was difficult talking with all the noise around us. If you are looking for a quiet dinner- ask for the front dining parlor. The delicious dinner far outweighed the noise! read more

I hadn't been to Cha-Bella in a few years, and when I recommended to our group, it made me look like a genius it was so good. Did not disappoint. I had the Cast Iron Hog Chop and the rest of the group had steak & even a shrimp & crab risotto. Everything is super fresh "Earth-to-table", and a ridiculous whiskey list that I will have to come back to try! read more

A great farm to table restaurant in a scenic, quiet part of downtown Savannah. The ribeye MELTED in my mouth! My friends and I way over ordered but it was well worth the food coma that ended our night early. Highly recommend the gnocchi app and the Ribeye with a side of whipped potatoes and mushrooms. read more

Another stormy evening and long day so we opted to walk around the corner, close by to our hotel and have dinner at Cha Bella .. wasn't busy when we walked in and got seated right away but later on more and more people came in and soon it was almost full.. the staff did a great job with being short that day and dealing with some grumpy , inpatient people .. Constantly walking up and down those stairs , refilling water, taking orders and even making small chat.. I had shrimp and crab grits and the tarragon sauce on top of it was a perfect touch!! Great idea that I might use at home when cooking this dish.. my husband had a 24oz ribeye (our neighbor table congratulated him upon finishing- it looked impressive ) with garlic mashed potatoes and green beans .. for desert : a goat cheese cheesecake!! YUMM! read more

I absolutely loved the farm to table concept here! Everything is made fresh and in house! That includes the food and the drinks. It doesn't get any more fresh than that. I visited with a pretty large group and they tell you that everything is cooked to order and some dishes take longer than others. I appreciate that! I'm more than happy to wait for fresh hot food. I ordered the pork chop with creamed collards. OMG. It was absolutely delicious! The pork chop was seasoned well and cooked to perfection. It was so nice and juicy. The creamed collards were amazing! I wanted more of everything! Because everything was so good! If you're looking for farm to table dine right, this is your place! read more

One word: DELICIOUS! The wait time to order was a bit long, but that's okay. We started off with their new menu item, Georgia Cheese Board, and it was yummy, although very small. But when our entrees came, just WOW! They were hot, delicious, and decadent. I would definitely recommend trying Cha Bella's if you're in the area. read more

My hubby picked this restaurant and he did a very good job I must say! We sat outside and even though they had fans on the ceiling and the ground it was still pretty hot! They have 4 swings which are so much fun!!! Anyway they have complimentary focaccia which was yummy. I was tempted to get the vichyssoise but the server recommended the potato gnocchi instead ( be warned, the menu is different from what is on their site ). The gnocchi was EXCELLENT, the mushrooms in it were so GOOD! I had wanted to have the pasta which was roasted red pepper cream pasta BUT like I said the menu online is different so they didn't have it. They had ricotta raviolo instead which I didn't want! So I got the shrimp and crab risotto. I've had shrimp risotto that is too rich to have more than a few bites of but this one was PERFECT! It was a huge portion with generous shrimp. The tomatoes and green beans made it much fresher and the shaved parmesan takes the dish over the top! Hubby got the market catch which was pan roasted grouper with succotash. This was a huge helping too! Cooked perfectly. And the best thing was that NONE of the dishes needed extra seasoning! I got a virgin mojito which was good but not sweet enough for me so the barman remade it perfectly. For dessert we got the chocolate creme brulee which was good but we were so full we couldn't finish it! I would definitely come here again! read more

Dinner here was stupendous. Not only was the atmosphere and outdoor dining area exquisite but the service was bar none. We had the ceviche as well as the bourbon board. Both were delectable. My husband had the ribeye and I had the prosciutto wrapped chicken. Holy moly delicious! Topped it off with a pomegranate lemon drop martini and an in heaven! Come here if you are in Savannah! read more

We hosted the rehearsal dinner for our son's wedding in March at Cha Bella and had a wonderful experience. We had the entire courtyard area for cocktails and dinner with passed hordoeurves. The courtyard was lit with flameless candles and hanging chandeliers creating a welcoming and festive atmosphere for the wedding party and out of town guests. Dinner was a southern style buffet with fried chicken and a low country boil. A few of our guests were vegetarians and the staff spoke to each of them during the cocktail hour and whipped up something they all enjoyed very much. The food was delicious and the dessert table was beautifully presented with something for everyone. The staff was wonderful and went out of their way to make everything perfect so I had nothing to stress about and really enjoyed myself. Thank you to Caitlin and the rest of your wonderful staff for a memorable event! read more

This was my favorite stop during our food tour. Not only was the food sample delicious, the owner/chef Michael Lacy came out to talk to us and it was such a nice touch. We've been on other food tours where the chef, owner or manager spoke with us and it's really nice to hear their backgrounds and inspiration for opening their restaurants. I wish more of the other locations we went to on the tour did this. In addition, he had information about the restaurant printed out for us along with the menu to view. Even though Michael seemed busy, he also seemed genuinely happy for our group to visit - I appreciated his time immensely. We sampled the Country Fried Portobello Mushroom, which I along with everyone else in the group really enjoyed. Since I'm pescatarian (basically a vegetarian who eats seafood), I've eaten portobello mushrooms prepared a lot of ways, but this was very unique. You should try it! We ate outside on the patio since it was such a beautiful day and he also let us tour the inside. He likes to buy unique pieces and upcycle them for decor so the interior is varied with lots of old chandeliers, fixtures, finishes and furniture that make it a warm environment. We all loved seeing everything. This is a farm to table restaurant, menu changes seasonally, and they focus on locally sourced ingredients. Even though they have popular pork items on the menu, they offer some great vegetarian options. I am certain if I lived in Savannah locally, I would be a regular here! read more

This is our first time here and I have to give hats off to this place for being open as the pandemic continues and winds down. First off staff is fantastic considering the challenges of returning to work. Extremely attentive and frankly, exceptional. We had Rachelle as our server. Let me start with the cocktails. One of us had a Hendricks martini and the other the Basil Smash. both were fantastic. Basil Smash is extremely refreshing after you've walked for 15 minutes in 84 degrees to get to the restaurant. So one of my favorite things about this place is there is plenty of gluten-free on the menu. In fact, most of the items on the menu were gluten free and the exceptions were the ones that weren't. We had the beef carpaccio appetizer and this was fantastic with the fried capers and an egg yolk that was fried in some type of gluten-free coating. For dinner, one of us had the pork chop and the other had the crispy duck. Let me just say, that the polenta and collard greens that came with the pork chops were at least 5.5 stars. Both dishes were amazing in flavor and presentation. The only reason this is a four-star review is that both portions of meat were slightly overcooked. Not offensively, in fact, we finished both dishes completely but definitely overcooked. This is a small thing that the kitchen staff can easily remedy by having a clear definition of the temperatures when ordering with the server. Some restaurants, have it clearly labeled on the menu what your expectations are with the temperature. This would be helpful. I also need to add that I told Rachel to pick a wine based on what I was ordering, and she did a very good job. Very happy with a great Shiraz. Yes, we will be back. read more

Worst service ever. This is a great place but our experience was tarnished by a wireless who clearly had more important things to do than worry about us. I was insulted by how she tried to avoid us. Awful read more
We are in the Savannah food tour. (Separate review given). We had delicious cherry tomatoes with balsamic reduction. I bought a much needed cocktail and all were delicious. We didn't have much more there but the place was cute. I can see how this place would be a place for rehearsal dinners and such. Has a romantic vibe to it. The inside is quaint as well. Just peeked while walked to the restroom. read more
