Ok. I wrote a pretty scathing review over the summer, due to the horrendous beginnings I had with this company. I'm still pretty salty about it, BUT since that time I experienced a weather related service outage and was impressed with their timely service. So I'm updating. Apparently lightening struck something important down the road from me, and I my internet/phone service was out. While at work, I got on the online chat (which was actually pretty fast compared to my past experiences) and they had someone work on it remotely right then. A local technician called me shortly after, and gave me his cell number to call in case the service was still out when I got home. It was, so I called and he worked on it that evening! I had service back by 6pm. Needless to say I was impressed on how quickly they addressed this. Where was this when I was first staring out with CenturyLink?! I hope this is the kind of service they can consistently deliver. read more

Why the fvck do I need to be home for the repairman to fix a line the county dug up placing a culvert 1/4 mile from my house?

Centurylink is evil...lol...I gave them so much money for a service that they couldn't provide me, (they said I'd get 10bps ...Max I got 2.8bps for like $130 per month) because I lived in an area that was monopolized by them. Our entire community was outraged by the lack of service and price. I'm shocked that the FCC hasn't shut them down...Then...somehow, Brightspeed got involved, and it took a year for them to stop hounding me after I moved from my home and paid my bills...I couldn't get ahold of billing. I would call Centurylink to figure out why I was still having to pay, they said to call Brightspeed, so I would call Brightspeed and I would be told I had no account to pay...but they continued to bill me and add late fees, and I was paid up! My credit score dropped during this time as well (for their mistake!)...Infuriating...I was getting phone calls 2-3x for per day for a year from collections...the only thing that made them stop was I finally said..."Okay...you all say you will escalate this...you've been saying this for a year, but I continue to get calls. So while I'm on the phone with you, I'm letting you know that I just hit send on my complaint to the FCC". The gal on the phone said, "No, please do not contact the FCC". I said, "Too late." Within a week, I received information from the FCC that Brightspeed would write them a letter explaining how they solved my problem." Then, bing-bang-boom...my problem was solved. the phone calls and the harassment finally stopped. Thank you FCC for protecting the consumer from companies like this! I wish I had $10k for every harassing phone from them...It was a headache and a frustration every day of my life for a year. read more

I would leave no stars if possible. The customer support is terrible. You cannot talk to a real person. My mom who is eldery and lives alone has not had phone service for 10 days which is unacceptable. This is a life safety issue as she cannot make or receive calls. My siblings and I live out of state and my dad just passed away and we are concerned as we cannot reach her. She gets confused and struggles with a cell phone so her landline is critical. She cannot even call 911and that could really end badly in an emergency situation. There is an area outage for 10 days now and this is unacceptable and CenturyLink has no regard for the customers service and safety. All this his is not attributed to bad weather or any natural disaster so there are no excuses for not being on top of this. read more

DON'T BE FOOLED !!! Centurylink has changed their name to brightspeed to distance themselves from their deservedly horrible reputation, however they still suck kitty litter with a straw. Mere words cannot express the intense hatred we have for this company and every individual associated with it. In short, their customer service is non existent. SUCKS!!!!! We needed an additional phone for our elderly parents. CenturyLink is the only game in town now for landlines. Most of their customers are elderly. They were a NO SHOW for 2 appointments and never called me! We waited a whole day on two separate occasions from 8am to 5pm for the technician and he never showed nor called!! When we called CenturyLink, it took 3 HOURS to be transferred. AND THEY STILL CHARGED ME!! Don't even bother! I wish I thought to look on Yelp before even giving them my time. I see why they only have ONE star!! The unfortunate part is how this is impacting elderly people who need a reliable phone service. Ugh!! read more

Without a doubt the worst company I have ever dealt with. I made multiple calls to shut down service and to this day months later they say it is still open. This is after returning the equipment, reconciling the account incorporating a $545 double payment I gave them in error and never recieving the credit they said was coming in the mail months later. This is for my business. I had them at home and our landline was out for months with no access to a support person... The internet was on again off again and slow for $200 per month and when I switched to Xfinity they didn't release my phone number for over three weeks to the extent that I had to get a new phone number... Horrible, criminal in fact... Never ever use them!!!! read more

The representative who came to perform a repair was great, but every other aspect of this company is so thunderously incompetent than it boggles the mind how they remain in business. Internet outage for the past 2 days, was told yesterday it would be fixed by "end of day". Today, still out, and no estimate given. Speed has slowed significantly over past several months, usually 1 meg or less now. Takes forever to get to a person online or by phone,, and they usually have no real answer. Avoid Centurylink if at all possible. I have never been harassed after closing an account like this by any company in my life. If you have your number moved or ported to another phone they unleash a foreign call center on you with people that barely speak english. They call you, say it's a courtesy call, then require your name and phone number to even begin to ask them to stop calling you. They call every single day, sometimes twice a day. I moved my number to a limited minute cell account, and cant spend my minutes to get them to stop harassing me. It is illegal as I not only Registered the number with do not call, but also filed a complaint. I wish all the worst for Centurylink for their heinous harassment of my phone. If I could give 0 or negative stars I would - please read on... Ordered DSL service at our home in Flint Hill Va, CenturyLink in December 2017 "says" they can get 10Mb at the home. Installation was set for 1/2/2017. Get a recorded call on 1/1/2018 that "due to high demand" your installation has been rescheduled for 1/9/2018.  Very inconvenient when you plan to take off work so someone is there, but I will give them a chance. Few days later, get an email stating "maximum verified speed is 8Mb at your home" (yes, it was allegedly "verified" because I saw the tire tracks in the snow where they turned around and foot prints near the telephone box coming up the driveway) Get another recorded call on 1/7/2018, delaying installation for the same lame reason "due to high demand".  One would think building your customer base is paramount for a business... but apparently not. January 15th rolls around and there is a knock on the door - German Shepherds go ballistic and a CenturyLink installer is standing at the door.  The wife steps out on the porch and the installer simply states; "You can't get high speed internet here" Then he starts talking to her about our F350 Diesel in the driveway and how good it looks, seen it around town, loves the tags (vanity plates), tires must be really expensive, yadda-yadda-yadda... She simply looks at him and says "Thanks, the truck is kick-ass" and steps back into the house... Now here is the kicker; I received an email with my first months bill!  LOL!  How incompetent can a company be?  I quickly emailed customer service and now we will see how fast they respond In short; ordered service, speed lowered 20% but verified, installation rescheduled 2x, installer shows up and says 'no dice, but your truck looks nice', then receive a bill! I am a Principal Systems Engineer in the IT industry and have been so for over 25 years.  NEVER will I recommend or even consider CenturyLink as a network service provider for ANY of my projects or home use.  If they cannot deliver on a "verified" circuit it is a wonder how they stay in business! SO HORRIBLE. I have never dealt with such bad customer service. Completely incompetent. I had the internet install scheduled 4 times over the course of 3 weeks, and still ended up with no internet. And I work remotely from home so this has really made it difficult to get my work done. The first time the tech couldn't find something so left. The other three times they just didn't show up. I live in a rural area so there's not a lot of options but ended up going with a hotspot instead because this company is just so terribly bad. read more

Two missed installation appointments with a install window of 8am - 5pm. The first appointment the tech called at 4:30pm stating that he could not make the appointment. The second appointment no call no show. Customer service is a joke, I called a after the first missed appoint no help. The second called 3:00pm they said the tech still had 2 hours to make the appointment and they couldn't call the tech and confirm. Century Link is hands down the worst utility company I have ever dealt with. I have been nearly ten yers trying to get them to fix my internet and phone, and it just keeps getting worse, without them EVER showing up to do the work. FIVE SEPARATE SERVICE APPOINTMENTS, in the past 6 Months, and they've not shown up for a single one, nor even had the respect to call me and cancel, despite forcing me to take an entire day off work, each time, to sit there watching the driveway.... knowing full well they would not show up. And when I call to ask what's happening? "The service tech cancelled the appointment." No explanation. Or, no kidding, they insist the tech came out and did the work and fixed the issue.... and actually rgue with me when I say I've been literally sitting in my front door all day and no one has shown up. I was promised a Credit 90 days ago, a consolation for their last time not showing up and costing me an entire days pay. When I ask about it, after waiting on hold for over an hour, I am told "it takes up to 60 days". But it's been 90, I say. "That's odd," they say, and they offer to put me down for another Credit, and tell me it will take 60 days. My internet goes down repeatedly. I spend more time rebooting my modem and restarting all my devices than I do actually using them or the service I pay for. And pay, I do. I pay $150 a month, and they give me 2mbs per second. TWO, but they promise me 20. Ideal internet runs at about 60. They don't even try to give me a third of that. But they damn sure charge me for all of it. The best part? The Century Link page won't even load on my computer, because the connection is too slow and keeps timing out, and customer service is only available when the rest of society is at work. I despise Century Link with every fiber of my being, and I truly believe they literally train their employees to unempowered, unknowledgeable, abusive, and/or useless. But they hold monopoly here, where there is no other option for us for internet or phone, and they literally don't care about their customers, or our money. Over 25 years of my business means NOTHING to them. Find another option. Anything is better than throwing your money away. read more

I am a freelance comedy and entertainment writer. My work has been published on sites like Cracked, Paste Magazine, McSweeney's Internet Tendency, The Hard Times, Ranker, The Modern Rogue, and several others. I do this work from home utilizing the wild, raw power of the "internet." Because of where I live in Charlottesville, Virginia, I have no choice but to acquire service through CenturyLink. This is unfortunate, because their customer service is quite possibly the worst in existence. Since May 27th, I've been without the service I've paid for. Originally, the internet has merely slowed to an unusable crawl, but it has since gone out entirely. After countless hours on the phone, chatting online, and sitting around waiting for repairmen that never come, I've finally decided to do something about my situation and make it public. Below is an ever-updating timeline of events. Almost every entry on here can be backed with physical evidence (emails, chat transcripts, etc.). TIMELINE OF EVENTS -May 27th: Our internet slows to a less-than-1-mb/s crawl. It also flickers in and out. This is not sufficient for me to work, so I contact CenturyLink. They claim they'll send out a representative on June 11th. -June 11th: A repairman arrives. He works for a bit and claims to have fixed the issue. I tell him we're still only getting half the speed we pay for, but he assures me it'll pick up in a bit. Within two hours the internet is out entirely. I immediately recontact CenturyLink, and they tell me they can get another repairman out by July 6th. I tell them this is way too late (after all, I need internet to work), but they claim there's nothing they can do. -July 6th: Despite minimal usage, at some point my modem has broken along with the internet. I've ordered a replacement, but it won't arrive before my scheduled repair. I don't want to reschedule, because every repair order has been spaced out by multiple weeks, and I can't wait any longer. The repair guy comes, says he fixed it, and claims all I have to do is plug in my new modem when it arrives. -July 9th: New modem arrives, I plug it in, all the lights come on, but it doesn't work. The DSL light is red indicating there is no internet. I call a representative and at the end of our hour-long conversation, the agent suggests a brilliant solution. "Why don't you just try leaving it alone until the morning, and see if it works then?" I say that's a terrible idea, but I'm also ready to be finished with this conversation. I say I'll give it a shot. -July 10th: Unsurprisingly, the internet fairies failed to do their job, and doing nothing doesn't work. I contact CenturyLink again, and we schedule a repair for July 18th. It still feels too far away, but at least it's not three weeks. -July 18th: After sitting around all day-not working-nobody shows up. I contact CenturyLink to ask what happened, and they tell me my appointment was bumped back to August 1st. I was not warned of this, and I wouldn't have been told at all if I hadn't contacted them and asked. In fact, I never received a follow-up of any kind. I argue that I need internet now, and they tell me, again, there's nothing they can do. -August 1st: Repairman comes. After a few minutes, he goes to sit in his truck. He then disappears without warning for hours. I contact CenturyLink to ask what happened, and they said he's still working on it. Eventually he returns and asks me to test the internet. It doesn't work. He seems dumfounded, and says he's going to leave but that a "specialist" will come tomorrow, August 2nd. That night, I contact CenturyLink and ask what time this exciting specialist will arrive the next day. They tell me I have nothing scheduled, and know nothing about a "specialist." They do offer to have a repairman come out on August 16th. I am out of town August 16th, so they bump it to August 20th, despite my complaints. -August 2nd: Frustrated, I send an email to Congressman Tom Garret and the Better Business Bureau. I repost the email, which includes a timeline of events on Facebook and Twitter. I garner enough negative attention that I receive multiple "No Caller ID" calls. Eventually I pick up, and a manager named "Tony" tells me he's seen my post and read my chat logs, and that he thinks it's "unacceptable." He claims he'll have somebody sent out the next day, August 3rd. I thank him profusely, excited to be near the end. -August 3rd: After another full day of sitting at my house-without internet-nobody shows up. I reach out to three separate representatives throughout the day, asking if anybody is still coming, and they assure me, yes, somebody is coming. I wait all day for this mysterious stranger to arrive. At 7pm I receive a text saying I've been bumped to August 10th. I reach out to a fourth representative who recommends I reach out again in the morning because there's nothing they can do at that time. Only gets one star because ZERO isn't an option. CenturyLink no longer has storefronts or offices where you can see and talk to people. If you have a problem of any sort, you have to fight through their automated phone tree. THEN, if you persevere, you MIGHT be able to talk to someone in another country who THINKS they speak English (they don't), and they will tell you that they can't help you and you need to start again. As bad as ComCast is, at least THEY have live people you can see and the service certainly isn't any WORSE. read more

For anyone thinking about starting up a service with century link, just run! We have used the service and paid on time for decades. Seriously, decades!! Suddenly there is no phone service. We have been without service for 9 days now. We have pleaded with the company to get service back because I have an elderly grandma. She can't remember all the cell phone numbers but gets the house phone right every time. They have called US 3 times to schedule an appointment...we waited for 2 of them.. no one showed up. The 3rd scheduled appointment that they made is for monday but they can't guarantee anyone will show up because in their words we are "not priority". Monday will mark 11 days without service. Brief connectivity for just a few seconds before being disconnected every time. Internet is barely 3mbps. It goes out often, and it's hard enough to get a technician to come out. Currently have had no internet for 5 days and the company denies that there is an outage in the area when we have 3 other neighbors who have been out as long as we have. The service is terrible, they never actually provide you with the speeds that you pay for. They have oversold our area and don't have the bandwidth to service it. Customer service is a JOKE. They never actually fix anything and then say they will send a tech out. The techs are all useless or they don't even show up. RE: CenturyLink: Replace the "L" with an "ST" I lost my DSL Internet signal on November 24. I waited two days to call, hoping/praying that, magically, the signal would return on its own; I dreaded having to deal with their technical support staff. But no such luck. So I called on November 26. Musical Modems At first, CenturyLink's technical support blamed the signal loss on my modem (it's outdated); a second modem sent two days later also failed to connect (it's defective); and a third modem sent two days after that similarly failed to connect. So they played musical modems with me for a week (November 26-30). That's when I was finally asked the question that I should have been asked first: when was the line last checked? (Troubleshooting 101.) I had to wait another three days for that (December 3). Meeting the Three Stooges All Rolled into One The technician (ultimately, the real star of the show) who was around here that day was nothing short of a moron, who could have given the Three Stooges a run for their money. He was playing around with the connections along the service path to my house for about an hour (I was monitoring my modem, as the lights went off/on), and about 20 minutes before he arrived at my place, the DSL light (on the modem) went solid red; when he arrived, he told me the problem was solved. When I told him about the DSL light (he'd somehow cut the line off), he asked if that was where I usually connected the modem. No. Well, that was the problem, he said; it's designed to operate where it's usually connected. Uh-huh. To say the least, he did not inspire a whole lot of confidence. He left to apparently re-inspect the connections, and upon returning about a half-hour later, said the lights should all be coming back on green (modem). Which they did (and, likewise, my computer indicated it was then connected to a network). If It's not My Modem, then It must be My Computer However, after he left, all of a sudden, my computer would not load web pages (a very precious few, yes, but the vast majority, no). So, naturally, the illustrious and elite technical support staff then blamed that on my computer (December 5). I took it to a repair shop the next day; they hooked it up to their system and Internet installation, and everything was loading - all web pages, just as it was at my home when I initially lost the signal (on November 24). However, for the next couple of weeks, I tried to troubleshoot it myself, and came up with nothing. Hence, I began to suspect, and become increasingly convinced, that I was coming up with nothing because there was nothing to come up with. The computer was fine; the repair shop verified that. Not My Modem, Not My Computer? - It Must Be My In-Home Wiring Consequently, on December 21, with great ennui and consternation, I again phoned their technical support. Pleading that, after all the grief and misery to which I'd been subject over the past month, the least they could do was to send out another technician (not that moron) to make a second, and final, attempt to properly re-check the connections in the line, I spoke to a lady who only seemed willing to schedule such a "troubleshoot" based essentially upon her definitive conviction that my in-home phone wiring was now responsible for the loss of Internet access. It Was All Really Entirely My Fault Seemingly, then, the malign intent, throughout, was to make the customer (me) feel guilty, and responsible, for Internet signal disruption: my modem, my computer, my in-home wiring. In other words, there was an implicit, refractory refusal to accept or understand that, universally, there were both good connections and bad connections. Why would this not also apply in the Internet environment? Sure, I was "connected" (green Internet light on modem, and the computer indicating that I was Network-connected), but it distinctly appeared to me, finally, at that point, that I had a rotten, corrupted connection (signal) (probably something that that incompetent technician, on December 3, either failed to fix, or insidiously compromised himself). Resolution In this latter regard, they finally did send a highly competent technician out on December 24, who evidently, as I had suspected, did detect and correct some glitch in the service path to my house (some bad, incomplete connection, or other, which was of course their responsibility). Hence, through their collective ineptitude, I lost Internet service for a month (November 24-December 24). Truly a nightmare of an experience and a thoroughly execrable Internet Service Provider. They actually deserve Minus-Zero Stars. read more

I've had so much trouble getting anyone helpful on either phone or chat. Their customer service is garbage, nobody knows how to do anything besides ask for my info and put me on hold. My internet has been very crappy for a while now, will go off randomly, one time it was like 10 times in an hour. I work online so this is not acceptable. At one point I was chatting online and a rep said, "it looks like it is working fine"--oh really, I am chatting with you online, how'd you figure that out. It does work sometimes. So, I finally got a technician scheduled to come out this morning between 8am and 12pm. Technician ended up coming a few days ago close to 5pm, when I was in the middle of a work shift. I refused service because I needed to work, and the technician got an attitude and huffed and pufffed back into his van. Then the little baby marked the service repair as complete! I wish I could lie about my job performance and poop on my customers at the same time while getting paid. read more

I wish I could award negative stars, but . . . After years with CenturyLink including going to their DSL for internet service, tonight's broken the camel's back. Out of the blue, no dial tone, no DSL due to no dial tone, no internet due to no DSL, and 2 different calls to try and resolve it. The first person was so incompetent that she couldn't grasp that there was no point in trying to look into DSL repair until the dial tone issue was resolved. I finally hung up in frustration with the poor English, poor connection and poorer understanding of telephone basics. The second person could understand all of that, but finally told me that the best she could do was to schedule an appointment literally 3 weeks out as in I called 8/10 and the earliest available would be 8/31. When I protested the length of time and added that I wouldn't be here that day, she was unfazed and said that the best she could was 8/31, but she would try to push it upstairs as a problem resolution issue and maybe someone would call me back. She couldn't promise anything because she has no power to solve such problems, but asked if we had a dog that might be a problem for the technician. We've never gotten the promised speed on DSL, but have made do as CL only rolls around in circles when you ask that sort of question, but to have to wait 3 weeks for dial tone - assuming all goes as planned in that regard is beyond the pale. What's worse, so far as I know, if you need a land line, they're the only game in town. If you don't need a land line, go digital with anyone other than CenturyLink. read more

This is by far the worst company I have ever had to deal with--for anything!! Their equipment is awful, the so-called high speed internet is slow and often breaks down, our landline is so noisy with static (it has been repaired numerous times) that we've simply stopped using it, and their customer service is difficult at best. CenturyLink has good on-line billing capability and a robust website. But their ability to provide and maintain residential telecommunications services in my area is 3 on a scale of 1-10. And the 3 is for the courtesy and patience of their representatives. Every one of the 10-15 CenturyLink representatives, both Customer Service and Technical Support, that I interacted with via chat and phone between June and August 2020 on three separate-but-related requests was courteous, patient, eager to help and wanting to do a good job. But much of what they told me was not the truth. A brief summary from June to August: Jun: "Yes, we can provide telemarketing call blocking service to you" (No, you can't) Jun: "Yes, we can provide blacklist call blocking service to you" (No, you can't) Aug: "Yes, we can provide 20 Mbps internet service to you" (No, you can't) Aug: "Your DSL internet service will only be disrupted for about an hour when your phone number is ported to another provider" (No, it was disrupted for 4 1/2 days) Aug 21 @ 3:30 pm: "We've resolved the problem with your DSL internet service and it will be restored in the next 30-60 minutes" (No, it was restored 3 days later) Aug 24 @ 11:00 am: "DSL is restored and I've closed the Service Order. I will transfer you to Technical Support to help you troubleshoot why internet is not working" (Yes, DSL was restored, but the Service Order was not closed. Technical Support referred me back to Customer Service) Aug 24 @ 3:00 pm: "Your DSL modem is not working and a replacement modem will arrive in 3 days" (No, the DSL modem was not the problem). Aug 25: Internet service restored but no notification provided. Total internet outage was more than 4 days. A customer advocacy representative provided regular contact and updates (and was very nice). I'm still waiting on my request to speak to a customer service executive were ignored. read more

There should really be a 'no star" option. It rankles to have to give this abysmally incompetent company a star. Scheduled a move 12 days ago. Didn't happen. Rescheduled twice, today no-show again,and now it's been rescheduled for a week from today, which will make 19 days from the original date. read more
