Had a CPU fan go bad on an HP desktop; I replaced it, but was still getting a heat warning. The store owner figured out that the replacement fan fit, but the screws were too short to make good contact with the CPU. Some kind of software running on my PC froze it up so I couldn't even shut down & restart. I resorted to unplugging its power cord, and when I plugged it back in, the PC did not start, period. I called Compu-Tune Up and they suggested I bring it in anytime. When I brought it in, the tech immediately took it apart, diagnosed the problem (shot power supply & motherboard), and told me he'd have it fixed by that afternoon. I'm a little late writing this review. It was before Christmas when the casing on my large screen laptop made a snapping sound when I opened it. From the moment I called them, I got an actual person who was very knowledgeable. I brought the laptop to them. They looked at it, diagnosed it, and gave me an estimate right away. Fixing it was WAY cheaper than buying a new laptop. They estimated I could get another 3 years use out of my current laptop, which has features that are hard to find now, like a CD/DVD burner. They fixed it faster than estimated, for cheaper than estimated. They are great people who are doing right and not price gauging. I can't recommend them highly enough. I'm a grad student who, with poor oversight, didn't back up the last two week's worth of work when my Hp Spectre x360 (only 2 years old) blew the motherboard. (Suspiciously, Best Buy sold me a universal charger two days prior that they said would work for my laptop after mine was damaged, and the first time I used it to fully charge my laptop, my motherboard fried... Beware to buy a charger from the MFR, and not a plain universal one -- not even from a store like Best Buy-- if you have a higher end laptop.) I went to Geek Squad at Best Buy in Woodbridge and they confirmed my motherboard was fried. After holding my computer and external hard drive for nearly 3 whole days for a mere data transfer, they said that my SSD was also fried in the process, and that data recovery would be a 1k+ expense that may take upward of a month and without guarantee anything could be salvaged. After this horrible news, I was not allowed to pick up my laptop and my external hard drive until the next afternoon, as Geek Squad is now an appointment only basis, even to just pick up your laptop when nothing could be done. I was devastated, went through all 5 stages of grief, 3x, in about 30 min. After I calmed down, I did some research and thought something seemed really fishy here, and I wanted a second opinion. Hopeful, I researched data recovery companies in Charlottesville and was relieved to see hope awaited me just on Allied St, at Compu-tune. I called in and explained my situation, asked for their advice at that point, and Mike said to bring it on in and he and Jeremy would see what they could do. They said some of the details I provided gave them hope the SSD may be intact. So I drove straight from northern VA to Compu-tune and Mike came out and looked at it right then and there (they even remembered who I was, from my call before), took the laptop apart and confirmed a fried motherboard. When I explained what Geek squad said about my SDD (that it looked like it had no partitioning or formatting, wasn't even initialized aka wiped clean of all data), he simply said, "Well, we'll just see about that." He fished out my SSD, plugged it in in the back room, and like a miracle from on high, everything spins up. Everything. I got ALL my files back. I nearly cried with relief. Jeremy and Mike let me pull my files off myself and download them onto my external right then and there, and the best part is, they gave me a discount and I ended up paying less than 1/4th of what I would have paid Geek Squad to do it. Jeremy then looked more closely at the motherboard, did research on parts, came up with an estimate for me to have it repaired but he and Mike recommended that I buy a new laptop as the damage was extensive. It was so refreshing to have someone suggest what's best for you, and watch out for you, rather than try to get more money out of you, and I appreciated that honesty and integrity so so much. Jeremy also researched the specs of the charger and more information also suggested a high probability that this universal charger was not, in fact, compatible with my model's circuitry. They went above and beyond to explain things to me, check out information for me, and gave me all the time I needed to comb through all my files and pull out what I hadn't backed up. I am in awe and so, so, so grateful for their kindness and willingness to look at things right then and there with me. This is the best service I have received at any kind of tech support, hands down, by a mile. By TWO miles. I am so grateful. If you're looking for a last ditch hope, or even just to square away some things on your laptop, GO HERE. First time I went here with my laptop, the young woman helped fix a small problem. Small to her, apparently, and had it done within an hour. The second time, I paid more money for a repair and I dealt with a Saturday employee named John, who was friendly and efficient. The third time was a disaster. The employee was rude, condescending, lording it over me in that entitled way that Charlottesville people love to display to us non-literate types who only use a computer and can't read one. How can I recommend this place, since I never know what I'll get. Small businesses like this should not be patronized unless they are excellent. They are not. read more
