As much as I enjoyed having my gel nails done w/ Ngan last time, I would suggest to not come here if you want to be seen on time even with an appointment booked in advanced. Look, I know things happen, but I'm pretty irritated at this point and will not be returning. I hate finding new nail technicians who I am satisfied with their services, but what I hate even more is when they don't respect my time. This is the second time they got the schedule wrong or gave me a wait time of 30 mins plus (last time, my friend and I waited 40 mins w/ an appt), and sorry, I'm a busy working woman and need to be seen on time or given a decent time frame. Cavalry, I have an advice for you- if for some reason you are running behind schedule, at least have the decency to reach out to your clients to either reschedule or cancel as a courtesy. It might not matter too much for people who might have flexible schedules or no preferences in technicians, but I do not have both of those. I'd also like to add that this was on a very slow day/time (a Monday at 1:30PM- the place was quiet), so I can't even imagine how it would pan out on a busy weekend. I'm surprised there aren't that many complaints about this on Yelp yet (UPDATE- NVM there are PLENTY of people who left reviews of the same experience of the time disrespect), but I'm so over it, and they need to learn how to manage their time better. MY RESPONSE TO OWNER'S COMMENT BELOW: Extending a customer's service when another customer is waiting for an appointment at a specific time is an unfair practice because you are prioritizing someone else's time at the cost of another. I'm sure some customers are more difficult than others, demanding more than what they have booked, but it is up to your business to manage the time and the satisfaction of ALL clients.Thanks for the luck, and please try to improve instead of making excuses for you running behind schedule. read more

I did a lot of traveling this summer and my hair was looking ROUGH after all the damage from the sun and chlorine I couldn't wait for summer to be over so I could re-dye it. Do NOT go here if you are serious about your hair, I came in for "Men's Curly Cut" by the owner Yvonne, and I received a extremely low effort haircut that was done in about 15 minutes. I asked for a trim and to get hair out of my eyes and she immediately got to cutting my hair like it was straight hair. My bangs were cut wayy too short for curly hair and she 'point-cut' them even though I did not ask for that. Never have I been so horribly styled by someone and treated like "just another walk-in client" when I had made an appointment a week prior detailing my needs. I literally walked out looking worse than when I walked in. I paid around $70 for this service and I have been to Hair Cuttery for $25 and gotten better service than this place. I contacted them through their webpage to try and receive a refund because there is no way I am going back and letting them touch my hair ever again. read more

Horrible Nail and Facial Service I wanted to start off by saying, I was really excited to go to this nail salon from everything I've heard about this place. I came 30 minutes early to my 1:00 pm appointment just to find out around 1:20pm, that my nail technician wasn't coming. I was very upset because I had to put partial deposit down prior to my visit, I wasn't notified until after my appointment time that no one was coming, and I wasn't able to receive a refund after the fact due to the receptionist not being there. After leaving, I was called back 10 minutes later at 1:30 p.m. informed that my nail technician came and asking if I could come back. I tried giving this place the benefit of the doubt but when I received my pedicure, I was bothered by how many mistakes were made on my toes. My manicure was good until less than 24 hours my nail polish chipped. I wasn't able to have the average of 2 weeks for my gel manicure to last without it already coming off the next day. Lastly, this was my first time getting my eyebrows done at this place. I asked if my eyebrows could be cleaned and not fully waxed and I was told okay. I was very upset of how much of my eyebrows were stripped away, even after explaining to her how I would like them done. I was very upset and disappointed with how all of these services came out and I don't think anyone should have this first experience anywhere. Cavalry is the best salon in DC with the kindest staff. Yvonne is so easy to work with and does my highlights and extensions and makes everything look really natural. It's been hard to find someone in DC who does blonde as well as she does. Gladys has given me a great blowout that lasted through my wedding! They are reasonably priced and so helpful- I've contacted them last minute and they always go out of their way to help. Finding a stylist that is artistically and technically talented is tricky at best. Finding someone who can cut curly hair like Elena (IG @hey.curls) is like looking for a needle in a haystack usually. But her photos on Instagram told a story of passion and talent. And she was quick to respond to my messages. I initially made an appt. for a consult (free, btw), but after talking with her for 20 min. and being open to doing a Deva cut, I decided to stay for the cut, wash & style. All of it was totally worth the time and $$. And Elena is a fantastic human on top of being an excellent stylist. The salon is bright and airy, and fairly convenient to get to. I'm so grateful to the women in this salon. Another salon totally destroyed my hair. Chopping off my long, mid-back length hair to above my shoulders, and leaving it a frizzy uneven mess. I'm not too vain usually, but my hair is actually really important to me. I called this salon last minute, in tears, barely able to explain what had happened in that other salon. They usually do not take walk-ins, but they took care of me, comforted me, even the other women (customers) in the salon were beyond amazing. My hair is much too short for my liking now, because of the other salon, and I'm terribly self conscious about it. But it objectively looks amazing because of the stylists amazing work. Especially given the mess made by the other salon. I believe it was Yvonne, but I'll be honest, I was so emotional I may be mis-remembering her name. The people in this salon are absolutely wonderful. I can not recommend them enough. They helped me get a bit of confidence back and I will absolutely be a regular of there's! read more

Wow I didn't know that this salon and Yvonne's day spa were owned by the same owner! Very neat. They have great customer service and personable staff. Aivy was great she help me through some of the pedicure options. She was very kind and sweet. The staff was very nice and very in tune with working with each other seamlessly. Highly recommend. I've noticed a few clients come in to fix their nails acrylics but they fail to understand that each technician has a certain specialty. Just because they are booked up while you are in a rush doesn't mean that you should write a bad review. That is considered a tantrum. Holy crap! I have never been more thrilled about my hair in my life. Elena is a straight-up miracle worker. I've never ever cut my hair, and was SO SCARED to do it. I found her on Instagram, and her work certainly spoke for itself. So, I called Cavalry and scheduled a consultation. She was so knowledgeable about how to cut curls and frame them around my face. I was instantly convinced. I said LETS DO IT ELENA!! I took the plunge and I've never been happier. I still get stopped constantly about how great my hair looks, and the cut was like a month ago! She is so professional and you'll be so pleased. The experience was all around not ideal, but the result of the gel manicure made it absolutely the worst. I was referred by a friend to come here instead of Mimosa because it was more quiet and not as packed. I made an appointment for 5, for pedicure and gel manicure. I arrived on time, and while the front desk person was on the phone, I sat for 15 minutes without being offered anything. The place was dead, so it's not like it was packed and they were busy. I finally got taken back to the pedicure bowl to sit, and the woman next to me was still soaking aka her pedicure was not even started yet, so how long would mine take? During said pedicure, the woman made a face at my heels and said she needed to charge an extra $7 to remove my heavy calluses. Look, no one takes better care of their feet than I. I pumice in the shower regularly, and get pedicures. Not only has the cheese grader thing NEVER been used on my feet, but usually they barely pumice my feet because there is nothing there. Obviously she was trying to get an up-sell. The pedicure was done at 6:15 p.m. Nice, I've been here for over an hour already. Also, no TVs, quiet music, and like 2 people are working. Thank God they offer wine so I can pass the dragging time with a slight buzz. On to the gel manicure, which I am warning you is hell. First she tries to get me to try a bright ass pink. I have a wine color on my toes to which I asked to have the same shade in gel on my hands. She paints one of my nails in the pink. Cute, but no. So then she starts with the color... it looks lighter than my toes, but maybe it needs a second or third coat. She barely removed the cuticles, the shaping I have to ask her to correct multiple times... I just cant. The color. guys. It's patchy, doesn't go to my cuticles, and when it does it is on my skin. During this process the front desk guy comes and asks "how much longer?" to my nail lady and the other. Like, I guess they are trying to close up, but I am also very appreciative because it SEVEN O'CLOCK. I am starving. So, the second coat and top coat is on... its blotchy, you can see through it, it's globby on the ends. Oh yeah, one peeled off just before writing this review. Cool. I can't but I'm so irritated and tired I just want out. I go to pay, they say they charge 3.4% if tip on card. I don't have cash so I agree. That adds on an extra $3. Nice. After, the front desk man tells me to download Venmo next time and can tip that way. "I HAVE VENMO" I say... why didn't he mention this before I was signing my receipt? I can't. I hate this place. I will attach pics. I am also going to my regular place right now on my lunch break to have them fix it and show them what happened. Hopefully I am not deemed a traitor. read more

I'm loving my new haircut!! Emerald did a great job! It was exactly what I needed.I was afraid I would loose length but I love the final result. First I was given a hair treatment and a head massage. I came for a last minute lunch time mani-pedi appointment, because, my feet were looking pretty gross, and I didn't have a chance to go over the weekend. Overall, I was pleased with my experience. Upon walking in, a friend and I were promptly greeted, and taken back. As others have said, Cavalry is in the basement, and a lovely space. My nail tech started on my nails, and gave me a fantastic forearm massage during my manicure. I took off one star because she did miss painting the corners of some of my nails. Then came my pedicure. They use a liner of the foot pool which made me feel like this spa was particular clean (something I often worry about). The tech was great at getting off my many calluses, and clipping my cuticles. After a few minutes of drying, the front desk woman was kind enough to dig through my dirty purse to help me find my wallet and pay. My total was $45 for a mani-pedi. Not bad at all for this area. Plus, I really was in and out in just over an hour. Not the greatest mani-pedi ever, but a solid option and I'll be back. read more

This is my 5th time coming back to Hava. Anytime i have gone to get my hair done somewhere else, i always regretted it and hava fixed it, leaving it better then it was before. (Not to mention healthier). This time I came in with partial balayage done by someone else. Hava gave me a full blonde balayage and my new blonde hair was healthier then my brown hair!? I called ahead for a last minute appointment on a Sunday afternoon, and was able to come right in. The receptionist was super sweet, and I was lucky enough to have the owner, Hava, do my hair. I showed her a couple photos and she understood exactly what I was going for! Hava has been doing hair for over 20 years, and is just excellent at everything. My hair was dark, uneven, and had some red splotches from a bad dye job elsewhere. Hava is magic--she not only fixed the color and gave me a great haircut, but she's also FAST. Aliya is the BEST nail technician I've ever been to. My nails look the best they ever have since I met her. She goes above and beyond to make sure your nails are perfect and you are happy! The salon has taken every precaution to keep their customers and employees healthy post-quarantine, and I felt completely safe returning to my usual appointments. All employees wear masks, temperatures are checked upon entry, hands and phones are sanitized, there are partitions between the technicians and customers, everyone is spaced out and you can easily pay by phone. read more

Although I provided a 5-star review when I first visited Calvary, I wanted to take some time to update my review now that I have been seeing Yvonne at Cavalry for over 12 months. I think longevity at a salon is the best recommendation I can give others looking for a blonde expert in DC. As mentioned in my review last December 19, my hair is deceptively thick, prone to throwing red tones and naturally somewhere between curly and straight. Over the past 12 months, Yvonne the owner and Master Stylist at this downtown DC salon has helped me transition from dark brown to the ash blonde (whilst blending my grey) you see in the pictures below. I did a lot of research before choosing this salon and Yvonne and I have to say that even during COVID and all the protests in the city, Yvonne and Calvary have continued to provide the same great service. I always feel at home here. The team is lovely, the salon immaculate and all COVID protocols are followed. Yvonne is a true hair artist, be it colouring, cutting or styling. Each time I visit, Yvonne takes her time with me, assesses the condition of my hair and whether blow dried or straightened (both examples below) the results speak for themselves. I came in for a manicure mid-day on a Saturday. It was easy to book an appointment online through the website. When I walked in I was greeted immediately by a very welcoming woman named Mavis. She took my name and had the manicurist get the station ready for me. She offered me a drink, I started with water but later got a glass of champagne which was very good. I know about Cavalry because my friend had gotten her hair done there once, but didn't realize they have an entire nail salon section in the back too. And it's fairly large with a number of massage chairs for pedis too. Apparently not many people know about the nail part either because there was no one else in the entire place while I was there, sans for one guy who came in for a hair cut. I sat down for my mani after picking my color and my manicurist started on my nails. He gave a really nice hand/arm massage which I enjoyed. The actual manicure was good, but not the best. I would definitely be interested in seeing what color manicurists they have on their schedule. Still, I liked my color and it's seemed to hold up through this week. After I was done, I slipped my champagne while my nails dried while having a lovely conversation with the manger, Mavis, about all sorts of things. I think this would be a fun place to go for nails on a weekend with a group of people, it is a bit awkward when you're the only one... But overall, I had a positive experience and left relaxed and ready for brunch! read more

EDIT- RESPONSE: your response is absolutely unacceptable. I don't care that Hava has 20 years of experience. She chopped off half of my hair. She did assure me she wasn't chopping it, BUT SHE DID! I'm adding a photo of her botched job. I'm also adding a photo of my failed dip manicure by Randy- 6 days later, two nails have fallen off. Dip manicures are supposed to last for weeks. But back to my hair, your response is honestly just brainless. Your "stylist" and her experience ruined my hair for months. She gave me a bizarre cut when I only wanted a trim. I walked into Cavalry on a whim, just hoping to get a consult - the salon (owner, manager?) listened to what I was looking for and gave me feedback on how they can do it - after the consult, I felt like just going for the haircut and they were able to get me in with Gladys. I was nervous since I was a walk in and I didn't do any research but Gladys was amazing and calmly cut my hair - for reference, I have curly hair which is always hard to deal with but she did an amazing job, and I felt even happier after washing and seeing my hair the next day.
