Overall, this place is fine for a hair cut. I'm going to assume i came on an off day. Pros: - The haircut itself was nice. I thought the stylist did a good job. -Plenty of space to wait for your appointment. They seem to provide a lot of different services. - My stylist was nice during my haircut. The check-in and check-out process was another case. Cons: - i called ahead about making an appointment and was confirmed. After waiting for my appointment to start for 20 minutes, i get a cancellation notification on my phone. I go to the front desk and the person says they can't fit me in. Things happen so i offer to leave and come back another time. Then they make it work, which i appreciated, but everyone seemed frustrated about fitting me in to the point i keep asking "are you sure?". It was very uncomfortable. - While checking out, i get charged double for my haircut. The person who charged me just leaves, frustrated, and hands the receipt to someone else to fix. That person fixed it ultimately, but i never saw my original stylist again. The second person handed me a void receipt and a new one receipt and then disappeared too. -The impression i got was that i was forgotten about and then when they remembered, i was one big inconvenience for everyone despite having an appointment on the calendar. Been here for 3 haircuts and only one was what I wanted. Most recently, asked for a simple haircut with everything one length and just a trim. Confirmed this with the stylist, and yet I've left with layers. One layer on the side of my head is about 2 inches shorter than the rest of the hair. Another time, she took about 3 inches off for a 'trim' and shook her head when I asked for just about an inch. Its a fine place if you have no preference for how your hair looks. Beautiful clean facility with nice people, but not detail oriented and may not listen to you so well. Bummed I would have to get a bob to fix this. read more

I gave this place a second chance after one bad experience...I should've have done that. I asked the stylist for a subtle trim of my curtain bangs. She gave me this choppy trim instead. Horribly uneven, and won't lay right. They don't work as ordinary straight bangs or curtain bangs. So I'm stuck with this until they grow out. I've been a customer for years but I took the last 10 months off from going to any salons, due to COVID. Today is my first time back and I'm super pleased with the way this salon is handling precautions. In order for you to trust this review, I feel it's necessary to share my own precautions. I work from home, bulldoze my way through the grocery store to get out quickly, wipe my groceries before placing them inside the fridge, wipe my takeout containers, double mask, and avoid hanging with friends/fam indoors. I'm sure those who haven't been to a salon are wondering what it's like here these days, so I'm writing this in hopes of providing a sense of relief. I also feel it's worth sharing this to help the stylists here, since most DC businesses are slow/struggling at the moment. This salon is taking serious precautions, especially Alicia (I've been her customer for nearly 7 years). She was wearing 2 masks and I noticed she washed her hands frequently. She sanitized every single chair before I sat down, and after I got up. I also noticed that once I took off my smock, she placed it in the wash immediately. AKA there's no sharing supplies here between customers. There's also plexiglass between the drying/washing stations but didn't see more than 1 client in each area. They're rotating employees here so that people aren't working next to each other. I'd say they're operating at about a 25-50% capacity, depending on how many appointments there are. When I showed up, it was just Alicia and I, and then 1 stylist at the other end, with her client. So 4 people total, and far apart. I arrived around 4pm for color and a cut on a Wednesday. When the other stylist finished with her only client, she left for the day. This meant Alicia and I were the only ones inside the salon. It felt like a private, VIP experience with no one else really around during my appointment. I can honestly say I felt very safe. When it comes to the talent, I was and still am a fan of Alicia's color and cut techniques. I chose to go on the trendier side this time and asked for a deep rose color balayage. Something new and fun! Why not. I've done balayage with her plenty of times, and I typically go for shades of blonde on my brown hair. This was a new ask I made of her, and she delivered! Pretty stoked as this was exactly what I showed her I wanted from Pinterest photos. Wanted to post a video of how empty and safe it was, but I'm just now realizing you can't upload videos here?! So here are photos of the space as I experienced it, along with my new color. Hope this review helps anyone questioning getting their hair done! Could not recommend this place more! My blow dry from Sylvia was, hands down, one of the best I've had in years. Not only did she agree to stay late to blow dry my hair (my flight into DC was delayed) but 3 days later it still looks amazing. Their prices are about half of what other salons charge - including most in the area. Next time I'm in DC I will absolutely go back. Do yourself a favor and get Sylvia to blow dry your hair! read more

While the service was courteous and smooth enough, I had the worst haircut of my life here. I asked for curtain bangs and showed 5 reference photos, and the result looked nothing like any of them. This was around 10 months ago, and they still haven't grown out to a point where my hair looks normal because they cut off (1) too much from each side and (2) an uneven amount on either side. I've gotten it fixed three times and there's still nothing to be done - a good chunk of my hair on either side of my face is just significantly shorter and it looks off. Would NOT recommend getting a cut here. A dye service is harder to mess up, so that may be a better bet here. read more

Wasn't sure what to expect because there are some risky low-ish reviews on Yelp about this place. But I was trying to look for some cheaper-end prices for a women's haircut and online it said lowest price point $43 here. I ended up paying $60 for my cut soo I think that was inaccurate but it could also depend on who ends up cutting your hair. I had Sylvia who was super sweet, lovely, and communicated the entire time so that she never did something to my hair that I was uncomfortable with. I got a trim and blowout, and was very happy with my cut. I wouldn't mind going again to get my cut and do think this is a good place to get a cut you'd be satisfied with. However I will say I could get a haircut for $70 at a place very conveniently located to me as a much higher-end spa, while this place, although I was satisfied, is kind of like a smaller Supercuts vibe. read more

I've been going to Luna's in and off for years. I was always satisfied with my haircut every time I went, except for my last visit. In past visits to Luna's salon, I never worried about who cut my hair bcs everyone always did a great job. So naturally, when I booked my appointment I just chose who was first available at the time and date I needed my haircut. I had my haircut with Silvia. She was super sweet and we had a nice chat, but the quality of of the cut did not match the quality of our conversation. My haircut was super choppy and quite uneven. I waited out 3 weeks thinking the haircut will grow out to be fine, but I was wrong. I tried to email the salon but the email linked on their website doesn't seem to be working. I am not one to write Yelp reviews, but I felt like I had to for this. Today was the first time I got my hair professionally colored in over three years. I was so nervous to get it done because I've had the worst experiences at hair salons. It seems like no one can figure out how to color and style my thin/fine ashy blonde hair! I've left salons with yellow hair, orange hair, tiger streaks for highlights, horrible layers that were the length of pixie cut hair (I have medium length hair), etc. So I've been traumatized with getting my hair done which is why I haven't gone in so long except for trims. I tried to go to bang Salon in Navy Yard last week to see Katie. I spoke with her for fifteen minutes and left because I got such bad vibes from her and didn't trust her with my hair. My friends and some other girls at work recommended Luna's. So I finally made an appointment. All I can say is WOW! Immediately when I came in, she had me feeling at ease like she knew what she was doing- And she DID! When she showed me the final product (cut and balayage), I literally was in TEARS in the chair. I am so happy with how good it looks! I will 1000% be back! I highly recommend Luna! read more

Have seen Alicia like... 3 times now I think, and she has never once screwed up my balayage on ashy dark brown/black hair or my cut with long layers. I hadn't seen her in 6 months, went this past Friday, was so excited, told her what i wanted, she seemed to get it, but i ended up with super streaky HIGHLIGHTS not balayage... thought it looked fine, went home, showed friends, they told me i definitely needed to go back. Saturday i go back, the stylist says she didn't leave the toner on long enough and she sees the issue, it'll get fixed no problem at all. I'm hopeful, bc she's never messed up my hair before. She does the toner, and i thought that looked fine in the salon too, but in daylight and when home, i realized my hair was red-purple and the bottom half was totally caramel blonde and nothing was blended. My ends looked super dry and blonde and the top was odd colored I thought maybe i would ask Luna herself to fix it again, but after seeing more reviews, i decided this place is just a no-go for me anymore. Ended up having to book a whole new appointment at a different salon and paying full price obviously for that stylist's corrections. That stylist also evened up the work done at Luna's, losing me another inch of hair when i ONLY wanted HALF AN INCH cut off all together from Luna's in the first place. Super frustrating, waste of money, waste of time to go into Luna's TWICE, and another salon a third time. So so frustrating given how exited i was and how important hair is for image (at least to me). I haven't had this bad of hair in over 2 years. Idk what happened this time around. Alicia has always been great, the salon always has been so accommodating and lovely and professional. It almost seemed like Alicia got double booked or something during my appointment, maybe she was distracted? Idk. She's GREAT for cutting and does lovely layers but maybe not my favorite for coloring. Really an inconsistent result for her but i think it's worth sharing. (Alicia was extremely apologetic when i went in for the correction... and insisted i leave happy but i swear the lighting in that place makes it impossible to tell what color you're leaving with. Very polite people but a terrible haircut. I asked to be cut 4inches long and in layers. She did exactly the opposite just straight cut and it was too late to do the layers because it would have been tooo short. When I came in and explained what I wanted several times she said she understood but clearly didn't. Person who did it was Alicia. She finished within 10minutes something that should be more meticulous. Now my hair doesn't have volume at all, when I blow dry it it looks so flat and terrible. I will have to wait a couple months in order to have it properly cut. Very centrally located and pretty salon just not good. read more

I am absolutely finished with this joke of an "establishment". For the third time in a row, I had an appointment and was kept waiting. I received no apology, only panicked looks and, "We'll be right with you" (this was after standing around waiting for someone to notice me). I had a 5:45 appointment with Richard. I arrived at 5:45 to see Richard shampooing someone's hair. Bad sign.Two people asked if I was there for a 6 p.m. appointment, and I told them I was not. Evidently someone messed up and gave me an appointment that did not in fact exist, but someone else was going to cut my hair. I decided to give them 30 min., and then I was leaving. At 6:15 I told the stylist I was leaving. She said she could do my hair if I waited five minutes. NO MORE, Luna's has wasted enough of my time and money! I left and got my hair cut down the street as a walk-in customer. I was GREETED upon arrival, and the stylist there was much more careful with my hair. I also got to hold a mirror at the end to do a once over before leaving (unlike at Luna's). You could tell she CARED about her work, rather than getting people in and out like an assembly line. read more

Pros: Friendly front desk staff; location; quick appointments (I got one in less than a week); cheap Cons: The important things, like hair styling. I went in for a long overdue hair cut. It had been about a year since my last hair cut, mostly because I moved and was nervous about finding a new salon. My hair is pretty easy; it's straight, not too thick or thin, and I dunt color it or anything. I told Luna, the stylist, that I wanted layers with the longest at the bottom of my chin and the shortest at my mouth. I even demonstrated the lengths with my hands. Before I knew it, she was chopping all my hair off and I was left with hair at my ears. She didn't ask me any questions to clarify what I wanted, didn't cut a bit and say, "is that a good length?" Thankfully, my hair will grow back and eventually be the length I wanted. If you go here, be REALLY specific about what your want and bring pictures. read more

I am not one to write bad reviews as I generally feel really bad saying something negative about a business or a person. However, I am so upset I can't keep my mouth shut. I went to Luna's yesterday for my appointment and Luna did my full highlight. Luna is the owner and thus, you'd assume she is good at doing hair. I've been getting my hair highlighted blonde for over 15 years (as you can see from my profile picture I've never had an issue getting pretty, light blonde). I told her ahead of time I like whiter blonde, not yellow, brassy or orange. She said great. When we got back to her chair after washing my hair, I immediately saw yellow and said something. She assured me it was because it was still wet. Even after blow drying my hair a bit it was still yellow to me, but I thought it might be the lighting and didn't want to complain more. Big mistake on my part. Here I am the next day and this is the worst coloring I've had done in years! I've attached pictures for proof. Unfortunately I had to go home today for the holidays, so I can't even go back to have her fix it. Instead I'm going to go to a salon in my hometown (in another state) tomorrow and pray they can help. The worst part is, even if I could live with the awful color, she didn't even get to the roots. So it looks like I have a month of regrowth and it's been one day. The whole point of getting your hair done, especially highlights, is to not have roots. Luna's did me right, and I am pretty happy about that. After reading Yelp for several days, obsessing over whether I should try out bangs, and finally committing, I called Luna's for an appointment one Saturday morning. I anticipated being told they could see me Tuesday or something, but to my surprise, they had openings at 1, 2, and 3 that same day. So, in I went, not sure what to expect. I had read from several people that Ines did good work, so you can imagine my delight when I was introduced to my stylist and told her name was Ines. And good work she did. I told her basically what I was going for (which wasn't rocket science, but then again, I didn't have photos or anything). She made some suggestions, and we started. I was pretty happy with the outcome. So, now I have bangs, which I sometimes love and sometimes hate, but I will remember that Ines did a fantastic job of it, the appointment was not expensive at all, and it was super easy to get an appointment. read more

I saw Shinee (sp?) for a partial highlight. It came out OK--one of my least favorite hair jobs. The front came out much more bleached and streakier than the rest and I had to return a few days later to get it fixed. Shinee was very friendly and accommodating. However while blow drying and brushing the small section of hair she had to fix with a wire metal brush, she cut through my skin and left a small gouge on the front/side of my head! See the photo. My 1st Post Pandemic cut - I hate and now, every day, all day I will be reminded of the nightmare - most likely most of the summer. I like my hair cut, but I took off one star because had the most miserable experience while there. I didn't think a hair cut could be painful but I spent most of the time I was there crying silently into my mask. I'm not sure what tool my stylist was using to chop my hair before actually cutting it (not scissors and not thinning shears either) but it hurt so badly as it yanked on my hair. The shampoo/wash part didn't feel good either, maybe because my scalp was already hurting. I said that it hurt I think just once (I know, I should've spoken up for myself but I had so much anxiety being there). Reasonable prices and the people were very nice. I felt safe with their COVID precautions. But my recommendation to the stylist is to be way more gentle. read more

I have been going to Luna's for almost two years now, and I so look forward to my hair cuts with Alicia. I have not had a cut in over a month, but Alicia did such a spectacular job with layers and styling that my hair still looks freshly cut more than a month later. My co-workers keep asking me if I just got a haircut (because it looks great!). Alicia takes the time to understand what you want when you sit down, and she is thoughtful and pleasant throughout the entire cut. Her blowouts after the haircut are amazing too! Luna's new location (across the street from the old location) is lovely and fresh. Its smaller size makes it feel more intimate like the boutique salon it is. Luna's is the only hair salon in the city that I have found where you can get a quality cut for an affordable price. I highly recommend Luna's (and Alicia) if you are on the market for a new salon and stylist. read more

Me and my sister went to get our hair cut today, and we couldn't have been happier with the result! It was my first time at Luna's but my sister had been there multiple times, and had only good things to say about the place! It is a petite hair salon, but very chic and clean, I loved the decor. We were greeted right away, and they promptly started with my sister since she had a 10 am appointment and I had a 10 30. My sister's hair stylist was Alicia. She made sure she understood the cut my sister was after, explained what she would do, and did a wonderful job. My hair stylist was Alex, and he was great! I've had my hair cut and colored by Luna multiple times throughout the past year and a half, however after my last visit I will not be returning. I simply wanted a trim and my roots retouched, and after paying $165 I had choppy/uneven ends and my roots were still showing. I ended up having to go to CVS to buy boxed hair dye. Let's just say L'Oreal did a better job than Luna. She's a nice woman, but I was extremely unhappy with the outcome of her work. read more

This review is not for any of the hair stylists but for Knong, the waxing specialist. I've been going to Knong since before she moved to Luna. The fact that she's a perfectionist at waxing who seems to love her job should be reason enough to see her. Add to that her vivacious personality, and why would you see anyone else? The front desk staff is friendly, and I never have trouble making or rescheduling appointments. Yes, the tiny room set aside for Knong to see clients is really a glorified closet, but that seems to have no effect on Knong's work. I often wonder what the other clients think is going on in there because Knong usually has me laughing out loud within 30 seconds. read more

I came to Luna's because my usual hair salon was booked solid on the day I got out of work at a semi-normal time. Though my choice was intended to be a one-time thing, I will definitely be back from this point forward! As you've probably ascertained from the other reviews, the price is right at Luna's - for $50, I got a 30 minute lesson about haircare, a soothing head massage/wash, a great cut, and a super cute blow-out! My stylist, Richard, made the experience so wonderful! Before he even started washing my hair, he talked to me about the best products to use on it, how often to shampoo it, and which cuts would look best. He was also very honest about how much he was going to cut off (hate when they say 2 inches and it ends up being waaayyy more)! And to top it all off, he didn't make me feel guilty when I told him the last time I had gotten a haircut (Seriously, who goes back every 4-6 weeks?! You're making the rest of us look bad). I saw some folks remark on the less-than-glamorous atmosphere, and while I agree there are no frills at Luna's, the salon did not put me off in the slightest. It is located on the first floor of a townhouse, with ~8 chairs, comfortable seating, lemon water, free shampoo/conditioner samples, shelves of products, and a bathroom on the second floor. Plus, everyone who works here is cheery and pleasant - an attitude I prefer when there are scissors and hot irons at my throat! TL;DR - Great prices, nice employees, no frills. Don't drive in from out of town, but definitely come by if you live in the area. read more
