Over the past five years, I have regularly visited Japanese hair salons in Los Angeles, New York City, and Boston while traveling frequently. In those experiences, even when a haircut did not fully match my preferred style or length, the technical quality was consistently strong, and any adjustments were handled professionally. Unfortunately, this experience was very different. One of the defining characteristics of a Japanese haircut is the smoothness, softness, precision, and careful organization of the layers. In my case, the cut lacked those qualities and appeared uneven and poorly structured (the photo from the back). I was also disappointed by the salon's management. Based on my experience, the overall operation and quality control did not reflect the standards typically associated with Japanese salons. Update (May 2026): Over the past 4 years, I have been with my Japanese hair stylist in New York. I returned to the salon to see Keiko because I was hoping to find a long-term stylist in Washington, DC. I had not had my haircut for 7 months prior to that because I delivered a baby in December 2025. Ozuki appeared to be one of the few salons in the area offering Japanese hairstylists. Immediately after the appointment, the haircut looked good due to the styling and blow-dry. However, within a few days, the shape became difficult to manage and appeared increasingly unstructured. The photo on my ID, taken approximately three weeks after the haircut, reflects how the cut settled over time. In contrast, the Japanese haircuts I have received elsewhere typically maintain their shape and balance for several months. Despite my concerns, I scheduled another appointment six weeks after the first haircut with Keiko because I genuinely hoped the issues could be corrected and that I could establish a relationship with a local stylist. At the same time, I let the management know that my haircut had bad form and hope that it can be resolved at the second appointment. Unfortunately, my interactions with management, Liz, were once again disappointing. Rather than addressing the concerns constructively, the response left me with little confidence that the salon could deliver the level of quality I was seeking. This is the first Japanese salon where I have repeatedly had unsatisfactory experiences. Based on the consistency of those experiences, I am not convinced that the salon operates at the standard typically associated with Japanese hairstyling.

This guy clearly had no concept of how to cut (straight) hair because his clueless messes get disguised easily in wavy or curly hair or in a blow dry with curling brush.

There was obviously a major misunderstanding. Why on earth anyone would want super blonde highlights on top of dark brown hair in 2018 is beyond me. This is not at all what I asked for. I asked for a natural looking balayage and showed Zhen literally four different pictures of examples I liked. I expressed that I really wanted the hair to look natural, blended and not ombre'd or striped. Both Zhen and the manager refused to try to make it right when I expressed my disappointment in my hair. Neither offering to help fix it, nor a refund. I had to pay $250 for something that was the opposite of what I wanted. After begging in person for them to help, I left another pleading phone message tonight for them to help me fix this mess, or refund my money as I can only imagine what a color correction will cost at another salon. I absolutely hate writing bad reviews about people and wouldn't have posted this if I didn't feel completely swindled, disrespected and brushed aside. I'm really hoping they'll get back to me, and I'll update this review if they decide to do the right thing. In the meantime, I'm beyond disappointed and disgusted!

I moved to DC from San Francisco and was in search of a new hair stylist that offered modern styles...after reading several reviews about Fringe, it looked like a great place to try. I made an appointment with Essam to cut my hair. He had the attitude of a top-notch stylist but skills of a Supercuts employee. It was fine. Nothing amazing or interesting, but fine. I would have given Fringe (and Essam) 3 stars after this experience. I made another appointment for a cut and color and while I was on the metro getting into the city, we experienced delays. I called the salon to let them know that I was unfortunately running late do to metro delays. Essam gave me an attitude that he had to be somewhere at 7:30 and that he would have cancel my appointment. I suggested we just do the cut that day, which he agreed. As I was approximately a half-a-block from the store, I received a phone call from Essam screaming at me asking me "who I thought I was", calling me "rude" and "inconsiderate", and that I was "ruining his livelihood"...(um, okay - I did all of this by being 15 minutes late to a hair cut/color?). He went on for about a minute and I eventually hung up. I see everyone listed here loves Stephany and Renee (and they may be fantastic) but I would warn anyone who might have a busy schedule and/or use public transporation and that may be 2 minutes late to an appointment, to not trust such a highly reactive an unstable man with scissors and hair dye. read more

I started going to Fringe a year ago when I found myself coming to DC a lot for work and one of my coworkers recommended the place. The staff is very friendly and does amazing work. Prior to going to Fringe, I had never colored my hair because I have always been nervous about how it would look and how it might damage my hair. After getting several awesome haircuts from Stef, I decided to give color a try. I was so excited with the outcome that I let Stef add bangs. I haven't had bangs in over 15 years. Once again, she didn't steer me wrong and I was very happy with the results. I have since recommended the place to several friends and coworkers and they have also been very pleased. Three of them who also travel a lot, wait until they are in DC so that Stef can cut their hair. Last weekend I stopped in DC on my way up to NY to have Stef color and cut my hair before a very important conference that I was presenting at later in the week. The salon usually closes at 5pm on Saturday and unfortunately my flight was late. I called Stef and she kept the salon open an extra couple of hours so that I could get my hair done before my big event. I don't know any other salon that would have done that. Fringe is fantastic! read more

You will not find another place in DC with the talent and prices like you will at Fringe. It's a small cozy place and they make you feel like family. It's not pretentious or loud. The cuts and color you will get are great. Essam has been cutting my hair for years. In a pinch a few months ago, I used another salon near my house and what a mistake. Essam is down to earth and so are the other staff at Fringe. He has even put money (his own) in my parking meter while my hair is coloring. As far as the few Yelp reviews that don't give Fringe 4 or 5 stars, or say that someone was rude--I'm not sure that you actually visited Fringe! I've never experienced that, and I've even seen some odd people come in to Fringe and they have been treated with respect. Read Yelp carefully and take bad reviews with a grain of salt--one person gave 3 stars b/c she said she wanted side swept bangs, and so the stylist cut side swept bangs but now she doesn't like them. Can I ask how this warrants a 3-star rating for Fringe?? read more

I'm extremely obsessive about my hair, and a long time client of Essam's. I'm back to write another review because I've recently gone from long to short hair and I have to say his short hair cuts are amazing. They last so long, and grow out so incredibly nicely. I swear I get just as many complements 2 months after the cut as I do right away. Also, when Essam has not been available, I've had Renee do my hair and she was also amazing with both cut and color. Meticulous. This is unique gem of a salon - if you have high standards for your hair, and you're looking for a fun casual place to relax and get your hair done, this should be your place. And their prices are unbelievable for the quality of the work and the area - nearly unheard of reasonable for Georgetown. If you are getting ho-hum hair treatment and want a fresh experience, I highly recommend you try them out. Need to book at least a week or two out though for top stylists they are high in demand even in summer. read more

Stef at Fringe is an incredible stylist. I had been going to the Supercuts/Hair Cuttery type places for years. I tried Fringe on a whim...my best friend convinced me to come in. Turns out I got the best cut I had ever had. Stef was fun to talk to, very funny, and of course great at what she does. She listened to what I wanted, and made suggestions or comments based on her expert knowledge of her profession. I went to fringe with an appointment for Renee. She was nice and listened intently to suggestions while crafting your thoughts in to a hip, fitting and perfect style. My new haircut has the length and exact bangs I wanted while still perfectly manageable for my day to day routine. I used to simply blow dry my hair, and now to make my hair look fabulous each day I have to add some spray and straighten it, but the new routine only takes up to 10 more minutes. It looks fabulous! I have been going to Essam for close to 10 years. I currently live in Germany and during my visits to DC I make sure to go to him for my haircut and color. I've been to many hairstylist but Essam is the best . Fringe has a great atmosphere and you are between friends when you are there - its both friendly and welcoming. Essam has been my guy for 10 years. Ten years! Why? Because he is very gently honest. He has saved me from all manner of "hairstyles" I felt compelled to have at the time and which I would have spent months regretting. He is also truly fun, personable, and trustworthy. When I moved to Georgetown several years ago I struggled finding a place to get my haircut. I went through several of the salons but found nothing that I liked or was worth the price they were asking. I had to shell out an additional $300 to remedy the unfortunate hair situation they created. Save your money and go somewhere with stylists who know what they're doing.
