I went to Tresses after a recommendation from a friend. First off, I went during my lunch hour and was surprised how fast I was able to get my hair cut. It was the perfect timing. I did not opt in for my hair to be dried, but it still looked really good. Joao and his team are using magic scissors here or something because after my cut, my hair has felt so much fuller, so voluminous and it has grown substantially. I go to Tresses every so often to take my crazy curly silver hair. Claudia is a wizard with shampooing and conditioning. She applies what beat suits your hair's needs, but also provides an incredible scalp and neck massage. I often think of returning just for that. Rosaline gives a masterful cut and provides interesting conversation and very useful tips for styling after the visit. I won't go anywhere else. read more

Joao is a color wizard and a life saver! I've been coloring my hair with him for the last 8 months and I love it. He is also a very good stylist, I got the most beautiful and natural curls after my highlights and left his place feeling like a million bucks! I've had wonderful HAIRCUTS from here but horrible hair coloring experiences. I have peak-a-boo blonde in my hair and I went to get my roots touched up and when they were done they did not match the already blonde tips.... so I went back and had them fix them and the lady fried my hair and it's breaking off. She was on her phone and forgot I was there... or doesn't know how to mix bleach correctly idk...my hair broke off while she was washing it, brushing it, and blow drying it & she said it was NORMAL! Mind you I have had blonde in my hair for 4 years and my hair has never broken or fallen out..... I had such a horrible experience here. This was not my first time coming. I visited Ricardo for a haircut a couple of weeks ago and he did a decent job so I came back for color. I asked him for a natural blond. I paid for bleach and tone. He kept me in the chair for three hours with bleach in my hair for all but about 45 minutes and finally it was burning and I was worried my hair was fried so I had him wash it out. The hair was completely white and even when wet seemed brittle but he told me it had to be completely white to tone it which I know is wrong because I didn't ask for platinum. The toner he put in did nothing accept make it look slightly yellow. He also darkened my eyebrows and just slopped the toner on outside of the line of my eyebrows which took me rubbing it very hard with soap to get most of it gone. At the end he asked me what I thought and I told him it wasn't what I expected and it didn't look natural to me. He started to get angry. He rung me up for $95 which is $40 more than the price quoted when I booked. He said because he had to add more bleach to get all the brass out it cost more. I did not ask for this and clearly it wasn't needed. I paid without fighting and left on faith that when it dried it would look right. My hair is ruined. Even the short virgin hair on the side of my head is breaking. Ricardo DID warn me that there would be some breakage of the previously treated hair on top of my head and I said that was fine. He ruined completely fresh hair though. When I respectfully complained about the color he told me he could darken it further if I wanted, but that wouldn't fix the breakage of course. I'm going to have to get a buzz cut (elsewhere) to take all of the hair on my head off because it is all ruined. After I realized it was destroyed I called the salon and calmly explained to Ricardo that I wasn't happy with the treatment and it was not what I had asked for. I asked for a refund. Again, I was not a first time customer. I had been there and left a generous tip. I was not trying to take advantage of him. He reiterated I could come back in to darken the color and then angrily told me that I wasn't getting a "free color" and hung up on me. I hate to leave this review. I hate to have this hair. I wish Ricardo would at least offer a refund and would stop listing himself as a "master colorist" on his website. read more

Probably a good deal if you're a student, but otherwise my experience suggests you go somewhere else. My hairstylist looked at the picture of what I wanted and said yea that's what it will look like. It doesn't. She also did not shampoo me and did not shape the back but charged me $45. When I said she did not do the shampoo she said - that particular haircut costs $45. I just donated 9'' and she chopped it around my head. Why should it cost more than the regular $35 haircut? read more

I am a recent grad living in the DMV area, and realized I was overdue for a haircut. Like most coastal cities, there's an abundance of extremely high-end salons as well as budget chains like Hair Cuttery. I searched high and low for something in the *middle* - both boutique and affordable - and I ended up at Tresses. Long story short: I had an amazing experience at an affordable price and I will be returning as a regular client. I had Joao, who was kind, attentive, and hilarious. I have a bob with an undercut, so I'm not super picky, but he both took my comments and made suggestions for easier care (such as thinning out some sections of my hair) that I've been happy with since I got it cute a few days ago. My cut and dry was $35, and I was more than happy to tip for the friendly atmosphere and superb service. The vibe of the salon was definitely casual and clearly frequented by GW undergrads, but professional nonetheless. If you're like me, and a recent grad who unfortunately can't take advantage of "student pricing" anymore, then I can't recommend this spot enough. To Dominique's former clients, she's now at "David's Hair Studio", which is nearby. I agree with the posts below regarding Dominique. I've been going to Tresses Salon for the last 3-4 years, and have had my hair cut by Dominique (who has always done a great job with my finicky hair). Recently, I called to make reservations for my regular haircut appointment, but was told that she had left. When I asked about her contact info/her new place of employment, the person answering the phone was rude and claimed she "didn't know" of Dominique's whereabouts. I suspect Tresses Salon owners wanted to push Dominique out, and take her clients. Not cool. Not cool at all. read more

I moved to DC 3 years ago and I had been looking for a go-to place for most of my time here. Most of DC is either overpriced, overrated, or lack the quality you would look for when pledging your loyalty. Tresses offers quality and friendly service at an affordable price. I found Tresses a few months ago even though I had been working by it for years. It's great and even though I don't work by it anymore I still go back regularly. I came to try out the student special and honestly didn't expect much. I figured it was a good deal and convenient because it's close by my apartment and if it went bad I would go get it fixed somewhere else. I ended up loving my cut! Dominique is amazing. At first she was hesitant to cut my hair but when I reassured her I wanted it short she did an amazing job. I just got my hair cut and colored here this past weekend, and I am still surpised by the transformation every time I pass a mirror! I like the cut, though with all my haircuts it will take a little getting used to, but Sammy gave me EXACTLY what I wanted for my color, I couldn't be more pleased. This little wonder is tucked away off of G street under the world bank. It's great! I went to Thom, a very talkative Vietnamese man, and he cut my hair exactly the way I wanted. They have great student discounts since they're right next to GW's campus. On Monday they have a steal- it was only $35 for me to get a shampoo, cut, and blow dry. You must show your student ID though, so don't forget to bring it. They do allow walk ins, but they get super busy from 5:30 till close because of all the after-work crowd from the world bank and other nearby businesses, so I'd make an appointment if you want to go after 5pm. read more

In desperate need of a hair cut and with a crazy schedule, i yelped hair salons right around the GW law school. I found Tresses, called, and they scheduled me for that very afternoon - love that. I had Chris. We talked for a few minutes about what I wanted. He listened and consulted. I was taking about 4 inches off my length so it was pretty substantial and he voiced his concerns and ideas. Then we got started. Throughout the experience he was giving me advice on scalp health and hair strength, which was great. He did a fabulous job on the cut and, upon reconsideration during the cut, he agreed that we could go shorter like I wanted without it looking to heavy and bulky, which he was concerned about. When it came time to get my first haircut here in DC, I wasn't sure where to go. There are several salons throughout DC but many are exquisitely expensive. Furthermore, I would rather not randomly walk into a salon and come out with a train wreck of a haircut! (I realize it would eventually grow out but that can be a long and embarrassing process.) Being the avid Yelper that I am, I naturally turned to Yelp to help me find a reasonably priced, well reputed salon near where I live. Lo and behold, Tresses came up! Reading over the reviews, I saw that Ricardo was mentioned several times as being the person to go. I called the salon and made an appointment for later that week. It was simple and easy. According to the website, you can walk-in during the weekdays (as well as make an appointment) and by appointment only on Saturday. When I showed up for my appointment, Ricardo immediately greeted me and took me to his station. I told him what I wanted. After looking at my hair (which is very fine, long, straight, and blonde), he had some suggestions that would work better for my hair type than what I had asked for. I decided to take a leap of faith and go along with his suggestions. All I can say is Ricardo did not steer me wrong! I love what he did with my hair and it turned out much better than I could have imagined. Not only did he do a good job, he was friendly and polite too. He charges a very reasonable price, so I am definitely going back to him when it comes time to get my haircut again. I would highly recommend going to Ricardo to any of my friends! The salon itself is rather small but neat and clean. I was there on a weekday in the late afternoon, early evening. Most of the other costumers were businessmen, lawyers, and government workers who were stopping by for a trim on their way home. Most of them seemed to be regulars based on their interactions with Ricardo and the other staff. As a side note for those who are students, if you bring your student ID, you can get a haircut for $30 (cash only). Not too shabby! read more

What a wonderful find!... I moved here last year and every time I wanted to get my hair done I would drive an hour home to Baltimore for highlights and a cut- I was always afraid someone new would mess up my color or damage my hair as I am already pretty blonde... I called at 10 in the morning after searching on yelp and being determined to try someone in the district. I got an 1130 appointment (love!). Ricardo was there right when I walked in. We chatted about my hair and exactly what I wanted and got to it! Ricardo worked quickly and the time passed very quickly because he was so easy to talk to! I have a ton of thick hair and Ricardo really worked through it well. My color is absolutely gorgeous and the cut is beautiful! I love it!! I went in yesterday for a cut and color (to fix a bit of a disaster from a previous salon) and Dominique did a great job for a great price, exactly what I wanted, and gave me a bunch of great tips on how to extend the life of the color. Great service, but I'm usually too lazy to write a review. Here's where it gets awesome: this afternoon she left me a voicemail saying that she was losing sleep over the idea that my damaged hair wouldn't hold the color. She asked me to come back in this afternoon, no charge, for a second application to make sure it would stick. How much nicer could she possibly be? For the record, Dominique did not take the client database from Tresses. If she had, the people who call for her at the salon would know she was not there because their names and contact information would have been in the database and she could have contacted them to let them know. As a client, I know that in the weeks before she was let go she was gathering contact information from her clients because of the changing environment in the salon. Interestingly, in his brief tirade below, the owner does not address the main issue her client's complained about -- that he was telling them she was on vacation when in fact she was no longer working there. read more
