Joao is a color wizard and a life saver! I've been coloring my hair with him for the last 8 months and I love it. He is also a very good stylist, I got the most beautiful and natural curls after my highlights and left his place feeling like a million bucks! My best friend got her Brazilian blow out and she is also very happy with the results. As for the salon, it's very clean, prices are decent and they are open until 8pm.

I cannot recommend Tresses enough!! I've gone to Joao for a couple of years for a cut and he does it perfectly. This time I asked for highlights and they're the best I've ever gotten before. Love this salo

I've had wonderful HAIRCUTS from here but horrible hair coloring experiences. I have peak-a-boo blonde in my hair and I went to get my roots touched up and when they were done they did not match the already blonde tips.... so I went back and had them fix them and the lady fried my hair and it's breaking off. She was on her phone and forgot I was there... or doesn't know how to mix bleach correctly idk...my hair broke off while she was washing it, brushing it, and blow drying it & she said it was NORMAL! Mind you I have had blonde in my hair for 4 years and my hair has never broken or fallen out..... I attached pictures of the damage and what my hair looked like the last time I got my roots touched up. Really sad...

I had such a horrible experience here. This was not my first time coming. I visited Ricardo for a haircut a couple of weeks ago and he did a decent job so I came back for color. I asked him for a natural blond. I paid for bleach and tone. He kept me in the chair for three hours with bleach in my hair for all but about 45 minutes and finally it was burning and I was worried my hair was fried so I had him wash it out. The hair was completely white and even when wet seemed brittle but he told me it had to be completely white to tone it which I know is wrong because I didn't ask for platinum. The toner he put in did nothing accept make it look slightly yellow. He also darkened my eyebrows and just slopped the toner on outside of the line of my eyebrows which took me rubbing it very hard with soap to get most of it gone. At the end he asked me what I thought and I told him it wasn't what I expected and it didn't look natural to me. He started to get angry. He rung me up for $95 which is $40 more than the price quoted when I booked. He said because he had to add more bleach to get all the brass out it cost more. I did not ask for this and clearly it wasn't needed. I paid without fighting and left on faith that when it dried it would look right. My hair is ruined. Even the short virgin hair on the side of my head is breaking. Ricardo DID warn me that there would be some breakage of the previously treated hair on top of my head and I said that was fine. He ruined completely fresh hair though. When I respectfully complained about the color he told me he could darken it further if I wanted, but that wouldn't fix the breakage of course. I'm going to have to get a buzz cut (elsewhere) to take all of the hair on my head off because it is all ruined. After I realized it was destroyed I called the salon and calmly explained to Ricardo that I wasn't happy with the treatment and it was not what I had asked for. I asked for a refund. Again, I was not a first time customer. I had been there and left a generous tip. I was not trying to take advantage of him. He reiterated I could come back in to darken the color and then angrily told me that I wasn't getting a "free color" and hung up on me. I hate to leave this review. I hate to have this hair. I wish Ricardo would at least offer a refund and would stop listing himself as a "master colorist" on his website.

I had the pleasure of getting my hair taken care of by João! He is a color and styling master! I came in with boring hair and left feeling like a million bucks! I trusted his advice on color and cut and he gave me an amazing blow dry and curls. I am grateful I have finally found a superb professional who knows that he is doing and who charges fair prices for the quality of his work. If you want amazing color and cut call João and set up an appointment, trust me! Loved chatting with him too! Thank you so much, Jõao! See you soon!

Over the past five years, I have regularly visited Japanese hair salons in Los Angeles, New York City, and Boston while traveling frequently. In those experiences, even when a haircut did not fully match my preferred style or length, the technical quality was consistently strong, and any adjustments were handled professionally. Unfortunately, this experience was very different. One of the defining characteristics of a Japanese haircut is the smoothness, softness, precision, and careful organization of the layers. In my case, the cut lacked those qualities and appeared uneven and poorly structured (the photo from the back). I was also disappointed by the salon's management. Based on my experience, the overall operation and quality control did not reflect the standards typically associated with Japanese salons. Update (May 2026): Over the past 4 years, I have been with my Japanese hair stylist in New York. I returned to the salon to see Keiko because I was hoping to find a long-term stylist in Washington, DC. I had not had my haircut for 7 months prior to that because I delivered a baby in December 2025. Ozuki appeared to be one of the few salons in the area offering Japanese hairstylists. Immediately after the appointment, the haircut looked good due to the styling and blow-dry. However, within a few days, the shape became difficult to manage and appeared increasingly unstructured. The photo on my ID, taken approximately three weeks after the haircut, reflects how the cut settled over time. In contrast, the Japanese haircuts I have received elsewhere typically maintain their shape and balance for several months. Despite my concerns, I scheduled another appointment six weeks after the first haircut with Keiko because I genuinely hoped the issues could be corrected and that I could establish a relationship with a local stylist. At the same time, I let the management know that my haircut had bad form and hope that it can be resolved at the second appointment. Unfortunately, my interactions with management, Liz, were once again disappointing. Rather than addressing the concerns constructively, the response left me with little confidence that the salon could deliver the level of quality I was seeking. This is the first Japanese salon where I have repeatedly had unsatisfactory experiences. Based on the consistency of those experiences, I am not convinced that the salon operates at the standard typically associated with Japanese hairstyling.

Except for French woman named Sophie who can do decent cuts, there is no any other stylists skilled in precision haircuts. Came here and one of their top stylists gave me the worse cut I've ever had in my life. I've had to wait more than 6 months to grow my hair out from the horrible layers he did on me. He literally just chopped my hair up. The bottom of my hair in the back was an upside down triangle! Every stylist knows it should be straight across and maybe just a bit rounded on the sides! Any salon would have easily provided a (normal) soft, feminine, sexy, natural cut that is subtle perhaps at different skill levels. This guy clearly had no concept of how to cut (straight) hair because his clueless messes get disguised easily in wavy or curly hair or in a blow dry with curling brush.

UPDATE: Jillian threatened me with legal action for writing this review…read more After being a loyal client of Jillian for hair cuts and Adrian for brow waxing since at least 2016 until 2018, before I moved back to San Francisco and to Plano, Texas, I returned to NoVA/DC - moving on election day in Nov 2020 - because it seemed like NoVA/DC was being pragmatic about covid-19 regulations vs. the two extremes in CA & TX. I messaged with Jillian prior to my move on 11/3/2020 to learn how Karma was handling covid-19 regulations, because there were no capacity restrictions in Texas, so I hadn't had my hair cut or colored for 7-months - the longest I've ever gone. I saw her and Adrian on 11/22/2020, and even brought them both "welcome home" rose gold goodie bags with cards, Sugarfina rose gummies & chocolate caramels, and masks. I knew the global pandemic was especially hard on the beauty industry, because my aesthetician in San Francisco & her mom had to close 2 of their 3 salons in the Bay Area - in spite of being open since the 1970s. I was therefore sensitive to this fact. Which is why it was even more bizarre when I learned on social media in December 2020 that Jillian was moving to Dallas, Texas in January 2021, after she listened to my stories about Texas and pumped me for specifics about salons there, and at no point told me about her move. I later learned she told some clients about her move and not others, and that she expected Karma to tell me about it. However, the poor communication continued, given Karma never emailed me, the same way I never receive receipts for my "contact-less" transactions, and they still ask for my physical credit card, in spite of verifying its existence on file. The poor communication and the broken technology are both annoying. I let that go, and worked with Jillian - via social media - to book hair cut appointments with her for the next 6 months on Saturdays, however even when we agreed on my preferred time slot (4pm), she booked them for 5pm, because that worked best for her, she said. Not very friendly customer service for loyal clients! She also initially told the receptionist she was booked in February, which initiated our social media messages, requiring me to book with her directly. Then magically she's staying late for me! In parallel, as to the quality of Jillian's cuts, I started seeing her when she used to place a placemat on my shoulders to ensure her cuts were even, and I was always happy with how even they were over the years. That said, I've been very clear - including bringing drawings and instructions from my stylists in San Francisco, who do editorial work for Nordstrom & Gap, and trained in London & globally - that I don't like "shelves" of layers in my hair, I prefer long layers, I don't like corners, and I prefer professional cutting techniques to remove weight vs. thinning shears that butcher the ends of my hair without expertise. Jillian uses thinning shears, and my last cut included all the things I don't want mentioned above. It was, however, even at the bottom. I let this go, because I've had uneven cuts in DC, and I knew that by August 2021, I would need to find a new stylist anyway. I did, however, vocalize my concerns to Jillian yesterday & today about the inaccuracy of rapid covid tests, in parallel with Texas removing their mask mandate, while she travels back & forth between a covid hotspot & DC over the coming months, and she decided to cancel my appointments as a result. That's fine. I'd rather not contract covid, which is exactly why I left Texas. Which brings me to the brow waxes. Due to schedule availability, I booked an eyebrow wax with Erwin in December 2020, and his brow waxes are better - and more expensive - than Adrian's. Erwin's shape was superb, and similar to my favorite brow artist in San Francisco, who's regularly voted best brows. However, Erwin did not pluck or wax the hairs in between my brows, which I had to do myself. He also told me the gold dab of eye shadow I placed in the center corners of my eyes made me look cross-eyed, which I found insulting, so I suggested he remove it if he found it distracting. He asked me who gave me that make-up guidance, and "if they were black". Was that a racist comment? And why was he criticizing me, his paying client?!? I tried booking a brow wax in January 2021 with either Erwin or Adrian, and learned they were both at home quarantining with covid. Surprisingly, when I saw Adrian in February 2021, he criticized my brows, saying how much they needed a wax. Obvi! Why do he and Erwin feel it's OK to criticize their clients? Furthermore, they were uneven. Shockingly, I pointed this out to Adrian, and he agreed that my left brow was taller than my right, and re-plucked, yet when I got home, I still had to fix myself, comparing to my photo of my best brows in San Francisco. He also over trimmed the end of my right brow. If you like being treated as a client, look elsewhere.

I still believe a full refund would've been the right thing to do, but you pick your battles. I appreciate the attempt to make this right although it still seems somewhat half-hearted. 4/27/18 Please look up "Zhen Lin" on yelp to see my review of the stylist who did my hair and more pics of the highlights she gave me. There was obviously a major misunderstanding. Why on earth anyone would want super blonde highlights on top of dark brown hair in 2018 is beyond me. This is not at all what I asked for. I asked for a natural looking balayage and showed Zhen literally four different pictures of examples I liked. I expressed that I really wanted the hair to look natural, blended and not ombre'd or striped. Both Zhen and the manager refused to try to make it right when I expressed my disappointment in my hair. Neither offering to help fix it, nor a refund. I had to pay $250 for something that was the opposite of what I wanted. After begging in person for them to help, I left another pleading phone message tonight for them to help me fix this mess, or refund my money as I can only imagine what a color correction will cost at another salon. I absolutely hate writing bad reviews about people and wouldn't have posted this if I didn't feel completely swindled, disrespected and brushed aside. I'm really hoping they'll get back to me, and I'll update this review if they decide to do the right thing. In the meantime, I'm beyond disappointed and disgusted!
