Holy. Sh-t. !!!!!! I can't find enough superlatives to describe Enders and the Burrow team. Enders (in collaboration with Ryan) fixed my hot hot HOT mess of a "balayage" (for which I paid $$$$) basically on the fly, in a fraction of the time, at a small fraction of the cost. Jarrell at the front desk is amazing. More adjectives: cool, high-energy, positive, perfectionistic, artistic, welcoming, amazing playlist. Best salon by far in my 8 years in DC!! This was supposed to be a quick bang trim that turned into the worst haircut experience of my life. I went in for a trim and the stylist who cut my hair, Jen, made me extremely uncomfortable from the moment I sat down. First, I asked where I could put my bag down and she insisted it didn't matter and this would be quick and then was trying explaining how I wanted my bangs trimmed bc I want to grow them out and she was very dismissive about it and told me to relax and again, insisted that this would just be a super quick bang trim. I went to take my cardigan off bc I had waited around for a while and it got hot, and she said "whoa I didn't know you were going to get undressed." Generally, I felt rushed and thought that comment was weird but I tried to move past it, maybe she just a different sense of humor that's not for me but I don't really care, I just need a service done well, especially since I had to go to a wedding in 48 hours. But the part that bothered me the most was when she put the black cover around my neck, I went to move my hair from being caught under the black robe bc it feels uncomfortable for me, She literally said, word for word, "ma'am I need you to calm down. jeez people in this city are something else." I didn't know where she is from or what she thinks about people who live in this city but it is obviously very negative and was projected onto me. For context, my stylist was a white woman and I am a POC. FYI: People actually do have anxiety disorders and may need folks to be somewhat decent and welcoming in order to feel relaxed and not rushed in and out... I wouldn't have even cared about any of this if the haircut was good, but when I went home and brushed my hair properly it was literally cut at an awful uneven angle and Maybe they are nice if you're paying hundreds for a cut or color but they are not nice to folks going in for quick touch up services and apparently people in DC are "something else" so they already have preconceived notions about some of us I guess. read more

JEN IS AMAZING!!! I cannot say enough about how great she is! I booked an appointment for a cut and color with her after going into deep, deep research mode after searching for a new stylist. I was in a particular hurry because I was proposing to my girlfriend that next week and needed my hair to look amazing (no pressure, right??) Jen took the challenge in stride and made me look amazing for the proposal and for the engagement photo shoot a week later. She listened to exactly what I wanted and gave me exactly that-- a beautiful bob with bangs and a striking bleached streak. Enders did an AMAZING job on my balayage and haircut! I came here after booking only one session for my wedding look, which was risky since he had no idea what he getting himself into (I foolishly thought it would be fine in one go!) Enders reassured me and said he would have me looking fabulous and made sure I got what I wanted. I did. I absolutely LOVED my cut/color. I asked for something more natural and for my cut to be texturized and shaped up. Enders made sure my balayage blended beautifully with my old highlights. He also cut and styled my thick, long hair so that it didn't feel like a million pounds on my head. He even took care to mention the amount of shampoos it would take to lighten my hair so that it would be perfect on my wedding day. I honestly felt like he treated my hair like a delicate canvas! I will absolutely be back and I highly recommend this salon. It was extremely clean and professional. Everyone was courteous and the service is outstanding. In my opinion, the prices are reasonable. Hi!!! I had Jen today and she freaking killed it! I really came in with what I knew was complicated and probably pretty picky. I also had booked the wrong appointment style and she was so kind and understanding about it. I showed her photos and told her what I needed and she DELIVERED! I'm usually pretty shy and not too much of a talker at salons but Jen still made me feel so welcomed and was just overall awesome. 11/10 would recommend her and the studio! Really bad haircut. I don't want to name the stylist because it can affect their income, but it was not one of the owners. The cut - nothing close to what I wanted. I generally expect a variation of what I ask for & trust the stylist to execute it appropriately. This looks ridiculous like it's a $30 haircut, not $130. Poorly blended, choppy layers (in a bad way), and so much length was removed that I am going to have to wait months to get it fixed. Even if I blow it out and style it, it doesn't look great & you can see the chunky, uneven layers that don't lay properly - and I have easy to work with straight hair. Vibe of stylist was also very negative. The guy at the front desk was lovely, though, very nice and polite. read more

You pay so much for mediocrity living in DC. Until I found the Burrow, this was especially true of hair salons. I booked an appointment at Immortal Beloved for my first haircut moving back to DC and it was a lackluster experience. The salon was so loud, I could barely hear what the stylist said and she was too distracted most of the time to listen to my responses. It's bad enough the salon has a pretentious name but couple that with mindless customer service, and it's just unacceptable. For my next cut, I tried Tigi Salon, which was a disaster. The stylist I was given kept asking me for guidance, making me wonder how was she able to become a professional. I got a cut that laid strangely, was uneven, and had weird clumps jutting out. It was the worst haircut I've ever received. So I avoided getting my hair cut for months. But this week, I got sick of the shapelessness. I couldn't stand looking at my hair anymore. I chose the Burrow based on its Yelp reviews and crossed myself before arriving. Enders, to my delight, is a pro. He immediately saw what mistakes were made in my last cut, laid out his idea as to what he wanted to do to fix them, and took the time to listen to what I liked and didn't like. He perfectly executed a fade for the bottom and a textured bob on top. The result is a beautiful, sleek undercut toeing the line between professional and punk. I came away not only relieved, but deeply impressed. If I stay put in DC (a big if), the Burrow is my new salon and Enders is my guy. He knows what he's doing and does not disappoint. read more

I've been visiting the Burrow since it opened and have recommended it to several friends through the years. Ryan and Enders are incredibly kind and talented, and I can't recommend them enough. As much as I loved the Burrow, I ended up switching salons after my final visit with Jen. As mentioned in another review, she made odd comments about me undressing when I took off my coat despite it being our first meeting. When I mentioned that I hadn't washed my hair that morning, she cut me off saying "wow, I just love thinking about you not showering. It's so great to think about that," followed by an eye roll. I understand she has a sarcastic sense of humor but frankly, we didn't know each other well enough for snarky comments. It's also flat out weird and uncomfortable to hear yourself discussed in various states of undress by someone you just met. For what it's worth, the cut turned out fine but not well enough to remain a customer. I held off on writing this review because I hoped it was just an off day for both of us, and I had enjoyed my time at the Burrow until then. But the other negative reviews made me realize there are probably others that feel too uncomfortable to share their own experiences with Jen. I hope that's not the case but after mine, I'd recommend trying one of the other stylists or visiting another salon. read more

I read a ton of reviews before trying out a new salon, and I'm disappointed. It took almost two hours to cut my hair because Shaneya was running severely behind with another client. I received a conditioning treatment for the wait but it was an unexpectedly long time commitment, and she seemed distracted/rushed when it came time to cut my hair--see below. The biggest issue is that my hair is significantly shorter than I requested. It will grow back, but I'd specified I did not want it cut short and I feel that Shaneya did not take the time to understand what I wanted before hacking away. After styling, Shaneya did ask if I was "okay" with the length, but my hair had been styled curly and I assumed the length was hidden in my curls. It was not. Three-to-four inches of my hair: gone, and I'm not happy with the cut. read more

I had such an amazing experience here! All of the staff are so kind and welcoming, the atmosphere is great. Enders worked magic on my hair adding in some highlights, we had a thorough discussion about the bleach and toning process and I am so happy with the result. Enders has cut my hair (and about 12 of my friends) for the past 3 years so when I heard he was opening a new salon in Shaw, I was thrilled. Booking online is easy and their hours make it easy to pop in after work or on the weekend. The salon is gorgeous and all of the staff were personable and professional. You'll be offered water, coffee or champagne while waiting. Best of all- you'll get an incredible haircut for a very reasonable price, especially in DC. Enders is AMAZING. He is super knowledgeable and knew what I wanted even though I wasn't quite sure how to explain it..! I have never dyed my hair before (I'm from FL so normally my hair lightens on it's own) and he listened to my hesitations and helped me pick the exact color I wanted! He took his time to make sure it was perfect and even came in on his day off. I also ended up wanting my bangs a bit shorter a few days later and he was so kind and fit me in to have them trimmed. I love The Burrow! I followed my stylist, Jen, from her former salon -- after just two appointments, I knew I wanted to trust her with my hair. With Jen's expertise, I've got this perfect coppery balayage that looks like my hair but better. I especially appreciate how supportive Jen is, encouraging me to take risks (bangs!) while helping me ease into bigger changes like higher maintenance color. I'm really comfortable coming to her with ideas, and I trust that she'll translate them into something that will look good on me, specifically. This salon is such a beautiful space and after reading the great reviews I felt comfortable trying a new place in DC. I called to let them know that I was running a few minutes late, but when I got there I didn't feel very welcome. I specified that I don't like much layering in my hair but just wanted slight face framing. Somehow that turned into the front third of my hair being a few inches shorter, just on one side. I cannot say enough good things about The Burrow staff, especially stylist Enders Barbaran, after my visit earlier today. Sometimes, all you want is five minutes to relax, and you'll follow whatever impulses (like scheduling a haircut to tame your stringy dome without childcare in place) that can take you to that brief reprieve. This is true for many people, including caregivers and mothers of newborns. So today, I scramble to arrive on time (late anyway), hauling said newborn in her bucket car seat a block and then up the stairs to the salon. Enders introduced himself and I word-vomited the obvious -- I needed help. I fumbled to show him a screenshot of some haircut I found on Pinterest and then let him take the wheel. Bless you, Enders! In a first for all involved, I had to nurse my daughter while Enders cut my hair. I had no idea how things were going to go, and was nervous that I gambled foolishly when the newborn hollered for chow time. Enders could have huffed off and told me to reschedule. Instead, he was a human being about it -- gracious and understanding of my compounded hot mess. Under the black Redken drape she went, and within minutes, she was fed and sound asleep. On a related note, I would take a bullet for Enders now. I feared the whole situation might throw him, but he was like a field medic on the battlefield. Unshakable! In a moment of impulsiveness, I cut my long hair down to shoulder length late one night and immediately regretted it. Predictably, it was uneven and had no style whatsoever. I immediately looked for salons and booked Enders based on reviews and as soon as I saw that he had a random opening the next day (the next availability was in 3 weeks). I went in and asked for a short bob but he convinced me that it would be better to fix my hair at the length it currently was. He evened it out and added some texture and even cut my bangs so it was a fresh look. While I was initially disappointed when he said a bob wouldn't be the best for my face shape, as soon as I saw my new haircut, I was fully on board! It was cute and playful (exactly what I wanted) and it was definitely a fresh look. TLDR; just trust Enders with your hair. He'll work his magic. read more

Just wanted to add that I went to The Burrow for every cut/color but one that I got when I lived in DC. I tried another place one time for color when I couldn't get in to The Burrow in time, and it was twice as expensive and the result was disappointing! I have moved from DC but I legitimately miss seeing Enders every few months, he is such a lovely person. During the pandemic I got a quick cut from Sarah that was absolutely perfect. Even though they weren't doing blow dries as part of COVID protocol, Sarah styled my hair gorgeously before I left. I was impressed by their COVID protocol as well and felt quite safe the whole time I was there. I so appreciate this business and hope I can find a salon just as good in my new hometown! read more

I've been meaning to write this review for awhile, so here it goes! I moved to DC almost 5 years ago. And went to 4 salons in the area-- every last one left me disappointed. Haircuts messed up, color messed up, etc. At one point, I was actually driving back home to Pittsburgh to get my hair done instead of trying to find someone in DC. A friend suggested I try The Burrow and FINALLY I found the needle in a haystack when it comes to DC salons. All the stylists are friendly, the front desk is friendly in person and over the phone. The salon is clean, prices are fair and I'll even say affordable for DC. Especially when you consider that they know what they're doing! My personal stylist is Andrew Akerlund. Who is, quite frankly, amazing. He is honest and gives advice suited for my individual needs. His cuts are awesome and he is a master at coloring hair. I used to have horrible anxiety just thinking about getting my haircut, and now I look forward to going and don't worry at all about how it will turn out. He listens and takes his time while still following his schedule and seeing you during your appointment slot. I would suggest anyone at The Burrow-- as the salon is a total gem. But, would say that Andrew is a magical and thoughtful stylist! read more

Went back in December for a cut with Andrew and it was great! Was looking to lob off a decent amount of hair (for context, I have course, color treated/balayage Korean hair) and Andrew was super helpful and provided some great feedback in which length would work for me considering I've had long hair (mid-upper arm length) for the majority of my adult life. We went for a length that he knew that I would be comfortable with, but still was the substantial change that I wanted. I think maybe I visited this salon on an off day judging by the experiences in other reviews. I will say that I was very happy to have a salon open in this area of Shaw. The interior is really nice. Let me preface this review by saying that I have very long hair (down to the very end of my back) - and a lot of it. Obviously, when I booked my appointment online, I selected the "Women's Long Haircut" (which by the way, costs extra, but I'll save my opinion on that). Anyway, the point is that I went into the appointment having disclosed that I have long hair AND paying more to have someone cut my long hair. I came to the Burrow to get a few inches cut off the end, whatever the stylist thought I needed to make my hair look healthier. As soon as I sat down in the chair with my stylist, he started talking about how long my hair was and said "I don't know how you live with this." Okay, fine. My hair gets tangled easily after it's washed and is a pain to brush out. I apologized in advance to my stylist - but again, I was paying extra for my long hair. When I proceeded to tell him that I only wanted a few inches trimmed off and wanted to keep it long, he went on to tell me that clients with long hair are the worst because they always come in and waste his time by requesting "just a trim." I was deeply confused why he was saying this to me - a client, with long hair, requesting a trim. Clearly I was wasting his time. I laughed it off (because what else do you do in that situation), but I was annoyed and confused. And it just made me feel bad. The cut itself was not the best either. Choppy layers, etc. At the end, he asked if I wanted some of the bulk taken out, which I declined, because it always makes my ends split quickly and I get haircuts infrequently. Honestly, the haircut felt like he was counting on that as a finishing style (which is fine), but when I said no thanks, he kind of just left my ends awkwardly cut and that was that. Given my experience, I'll probably take my long hair elsewhere for my next cut. I hate to leave a newer business a bad review, but I've had very long hair for my entire life and never once had an experience like this getting it cut. I left the salon with a not-so-great cut and feeling pretty low. Not for me. read more

Service is extremely professional, you can tell they enjoy what they do and the place is just awesome, very cool and modern. Enders is an amazing colorist and stylist and thoughtful professional. I booked with Enders as he was a referral from my sister. After 2 years at home hair coloring during the Pandemic, my thick hair was all sorts of shades and colors. He took the time to properly assess my hair and created a plan of action to get it looking healthy and great again-- with my budget for future treatments in mind! The color correction took nearly 4 hours in his chair, and it was worth every minute (and penny). On top of the color correction, he gave me the best haircut ever! read more

I am the absolute pickiest person alive when it comes to my hair color to the point I avoided getting it done for three years in part because I was scared somebody would really mess it up or that the results I wanted werre too difficult to achieve. I came to the Burrow once or twice for a haircut before I finally caved & scheduled an appointment for balayage with Jen & she killed it!! Literally the best my hair has ever looked. I was very clear on what color I was going for, that I didn't want any harsh lines, or any color touching my root & she clearly listened because the finished product is even better than I could have hoped for. I finally went to the Burrow about six months ago after a particularly bad highlight job at PR at Partners that left my hair looking very yellow/orange. I just got my third round of highlights and feel confident saying that Enders is truly talented and should be your guy if you're looking for blonde hair and no brass! Blondes, this place gets it right. I moved here recently and desperately needed highlights as the winter wore on. Also, current color was completely brassy and dull. I scheduled with Enders and ended up doing a 3/4 highlight with a toner and deep condition. The result is EXACTLY what I was looking for. He blended the highlights perfectly, selected a slightly ashier shade of blonde and made it work into my current color with the toner. I'm really picky about highlights and never thought I'd find someone as good as my colorist in Boston, but Enders was fantastic. Very attentive and friendly but also not chatting your ear off (which personally was a relief to me because I was tired as hell and brain dead from school that day). The prices are very reasonable and service impeccable. Just make sure you have cash for your tip, you can't add it to your overall charge. read more

I had a haircut with Ryan and OMG has my life been changed. I was so attached to my long hair for well over 5 years & one day recently i woke up and was like ok, it's time for a change. Thanks to all the great reviews on Yelp & easy to use website I booked at The Burrow and the outcome well EXCEEDED my expectations!!! I walked in and said just please chop. The dead hair needs to go. I saw someone else's review say "you pay so much for mediocrity living in DC" and since moving from NYC a few months ago, that has been my experience. In NYC you can have bougie, but you can also get great service at affordable prices and have a low key, down to earth, relaxed interaction. I haven't found that yet in DC, and was concerned I'd have to pay an arm and TWO legs for a quality hair service. I recognize I may just not have found the right places yet. BUT, I DID FIND the Burrow and it was everything I was looking for. I called in multiple times in a week with questions (because I'm one of those people that researches everything 15+ times before doing something) and Jorel, was super patient and willing to answer my questions as best he could. He had a welcoming smile when I first came in and I just felt at ease the entire time. I talk a lot, but am relatively shy and anxious. Arriving there and having someone acknowledge me helped set me at ease. It was nice to feel like I had someone seeing me, and not just crossing my name off of a list. On to my hair, Ryan worked on my hair. I came in with a smidge (if that) of a clue of what I wanted and Ryan listened, asked clarifying questions and did his thing. Ryan is also chill and very friendly- even gave me a great recommendation of where to go and explore in DC. He explained each step in the process, which ,for an anxious person, is a dream come true. I got an ash grey/lilac colored balayage on dark brown/black "virgin" hair. We recognized we may not get right where we wanted, but would do our best. I appreciated Ryan being upfront about that, instead of trying to sell me a dream and destroying my hair in the process. Lucky my hair color lifted well, and we were able to get the lilac/ash grey color in. Ryan was sure to explain how to take care of my hair and made sure I didn't have hay for hair by the time I left. Last time I had my hair bleached it was frayed, so it was nice to see Ryan work his magic. Brenda helped wash and condition my hair. She was very kind and also very genuine. She AND Ryan checked on me every few minutes or so while I sat in the wash station and had my treatment settle. I felt very well attended to. All in all, I was pleased with the outcome, the service, and the culture (they welcome dogs!!! I was in heaven). Its very laid back, chill and down to earth. Its a clean space, spacious, nice decor, and great customer service (they even offer you some of the bubbly). At the Burrow I was able to get a glam look without feeling like I had to attend a debutante class before arriving. Will be back in May for a cut. read more
