It's been almost 2 years (September 2023) since my first and only appointment at blackbird. It was so terrible that TO THIS DAY I think about it whenever I'm drying my hair. I decided that it's finally time to make a review of my experience. My appointment was with Eunice. I had done a ton of research about where to trust my hair now that a former stylist of mine stopped cutting hair for a living. She recommended this salon. After reading all the stylists instagrams I decided on Eunice. I arrived on time and was seated in her chair. She had the worst attitude and demeanor as soon as I sat down. She asked me about my hair routine and I told her I used Keratase hair oil as a finishing product and she scoffed at me and said "you put hair oil on dry hair?" like I was some sort of idiot. "Um, yes, this is common," I thought. But I was so shocked I just smiled. Then we were talking about what kind of cut I wanted and I asked her if she had any suggestions and she literally said "no, that is up to you." This woman was literally charging 125 for haircuts and would not give me any suggestions. I totally regretted making this appointment at that point but I thought it was too late, and didn't want to be rude (I think I was the only one). I ended up getting a cut that was fine, and when she blowdried it she made no effort to style it. Simply dried, no real volume, nothing. The whole experience was 45 minutes start to finish. It was a haircut I probably could have gotten for half the price elsewhere without the horrible attitude. When I went to checkout, it is the only hair stylist EVER that I did not tip. 125 for the cut was already too much (and I've paid more for haircuts). I think she charges more now. Perhaps the other stylists here are better but I have no interest in going back to a salon where this type of behavior is ok (based on my reading of reviews, I am not an isolated case). read more

I've been coming to Blackbird for years now and will literally never go anywhere else for my hair!! First, the vibes are incredible, warm & cozy and super welcoming. Eunice does my cuts and is INCREDIBLE with her attention to detail snipping off all my split ends while maintaining my length! Devin has done my color since I went from brunette to bright red which I was so nervous about, but she literally SLAYS every single time. If I ever have a question about my color, she takes the time to educate me about the process before we make any changes and truly cares about my hair, my experience, and my goals long term which is so helpful. I've also had such amazing experiences with all the other stylists, assistants and front desk gals at the salon -shoutout to Carmen for being awesome! I will not go anywhere else, Eunice is such a pro with the variety of cuts and styles we have done from shag to wolf cut to mullet-y, I trust her every single time and couldn't recommend Blackbird enough! I am an older woman of 68 whose daughter made an appointment for me for a cut. My hair had become shaggy over the months, and I badly needed a clean-up. After sitting in her chair, Eunice pushed my hair onto my face, and I explained that I wore my hair parted on the side and wanted to keep the same cut. She remarked that the cut wasn't flattering on me and made my head look pointed. My interaction continued with her as she said that my hair was too short here; too long there, ànd that she could probably clean it up. Her manner was terse and challenging and she finally said to me that I wasn't willing to listen to her suggestions, but she had made no suggestions, only criticisms. She hurt my feelings, and I walked out without a cut. In the many years I've been getting my hair done, I have never experienced such uncaring and unprofessional treatment in a salon. read more

I was really looking forward to trying Blackbird but the experience couldn't have been more disappointing. After driving 45 minutes, I get the rudest welcome from the host telling me how busy they are and that I had to wait 20 minutes. But that was the nice part. The service was mediocre. Hair color is off, they kept me with wet hair for over an hour, and my haircut was 15 minutes. If you are going to spend $250 at hair salon, at least go somewhere with good service or where staff respects customer. Never again. read more

I have always loved blackbird but do not go to Eunice! I literally said just above my shoulders and she cut my hair 2 inches shorter than that! I said don't make it shorter in the back than the front and that's what she did. This is the shortest my hair has ever been, it looks terrible, and it is not what I asked for. This salon rules. I love it. I trust Nono with my life. She's been coloring and cutting my hair for about a year. I have started going grey for a while and am clueless about all things salon-related and she always puts me at ease and chats about options with me and does a fabulous job. I recommend making appointments with a lot of advance because slots fill quickly. I once made the mistake of visiting another spot because I was in dire need and she was booked up, and I still regret going somewhere else. (Side note: if you're clueless like me and going grey and kind of like it but would like to ease into it with a softer blend, "single process" has been super.) (Another side note: Nono did my bridal hair and makeup and I have never felt more beautiful. It was so much fun. I have been going to Blackbird for a little over a year, and have been seen by multiple stylists. The space is beautiful, the products they use are nice, but my cuts have been of varying quality, and frankly my experience with the stylists themselves was not great. Two of the stylists I used were unfriendly, unenthusiastic and essentially insulted my hair when I was explaining what I wanted - a style I'd had in the past, no problem. I have straight, fine hair - I know it's not exciting to cut, and I don't ask for crazy styles, but a little friendliness would go a long way. Additionally, they tell you that bang trims are free, but what they don't tell you is that you may have to call MONTHS in advance to get a trim with the specific stylist you last saw or you will be charged $20 for them. So, if you call and the last stylist you saw only has one opening in the middle of the workday for the next two weeks and you want to be seen before then - tough luck! Long story short: aesthetically this place checks all the boxes, but they should focus more on making their clients feel good and less on having an instagram-worthy space. read more

I was hesitant to write a review as I hate being so negative especially with small businesses. However, as someone who recently moved to DC and relies heavily on reviews from others, I figured if I could share my experience to ensure someone else doesn't have to go through the same thing it would be worth it. I went to Blackbird salon looking for a simple haircut with any stylist as it was my first visit and figured a haircut shouldn't be too difficult. I got paired with Stephanie and had about the worst experience I could've imagined. When getting there I had a few different pictures as reference photos on what I was looking for but she was very dismissive and spent about no time looking at my photos - I couldn't even show her a few different ones without getting moved to the hair washing station. I believe a new employee was washing my hair and while I understand she was training my hair felt dirtier than when I walked in. I got walked back to Stephanie's chair and she started the cut. After a bit I noticed she was going really short on the curtain bangs and I eventually felt uncomfortable and stated that I didn't want to go any shorter on that piece. She immediately shifted her attitude, got incredibly defensive, and borderline yelled at me. From there it was completely downhill and I got treated absolutely awful. I got to the point where I just wanted the cut to be over and leave because of the amount of disrespect I was feeling. When she finished I didn't even look, paid, expressed to the receptionist how unhappy I was with how I was treated nearly in tears and left immediately. When I got home and actually took a look at my cut I noticed my two front pieces were two completely different lengths - one was cut far too short which is exactly what I had mentioned to her. I sent a photo to the blackbird email and from there it was handle well. The manager called me the next day and admitted that it was absolutely not in line with what they aim to deliver. The rest of the staff around seemed attentive to their customers so I can't speak for the salon and stylists as a whole but I absolutely would not recommend Stephanie unless you want uneven hair and to be treated poorly to the point of tears. While I can't speak for the rest of the stylists I won't be returning as my trust is completely lost after my experience. read more

As a new customer, I was excited to try this salon based on the recommendations and it's reputation. I had the worst experience with Eunice. She was very unprofessional, unwelcoming, and dismissive. While I waited for Eunice to finish with a customer, I noticed she was moping around the salon as if she didn't want to be at work. She was clearly having a bad day. When she approached me, she did not greet me in a welcoming manner. She just called my name and told me to take a seat. Her mood was very somber and it showed. The discussion that followed regarding my hair and what could be accomplished was very disappointing. She was very unmotivated and displayed irritability all while insulting my hair type. I felt extremely uncomfortable with her demeanor and I felt like I wasted my time making the trip to have my hair done by the "great" Eunice. I'm glad I made the decision to leave without getting anything done by her. I actually had a color consultation scheduled for the next day but, decided to cancel based upon this unfortunate experience.
