Before I went to Doan, I went to some high-end salon and spent about 1/3 of my paycheck for okay results. I decided to try Doan in search of a more affordable way to keep up with my blonde highlight habit, and I am so happy I found her. She did a great job on the bleaching and it's not damaged at all. The main gripe I have is that the dye she put on top washed out after one wash with purple shampoo, something that had never happened to me before when I had gotten my hair balayaged elsewhere in the past (nor when I'd gotten it toned every two months). She'd recommended using overtone conditioner--unfortunately, the silver overtone conditioner did nothing except give my hair a green twinge (looks a lot like hay currently.) When I panicked and told Doan about this she was kind and offered me useful advice--clarifying shampoo, which I hadn't thought about--and relayed the brand of dye she used so I wouldn't have an alternative salon use it on me in the future. Sadly, only two weeks after getting my hair done I'm going to have to go somewhere else to get it fixed, hence the three stars. :(

Their staff is mostly BIPOC and as an Indian person, I frequently would go to hair salons with people who did not look like me and did not understand the importance of a good hair cut as a Brown person. As soon as I arrived, I knew this place was going to be great. The ambiance and decor of the space itself is so welcoming. I walked in, but I suggest making an appointment. I got there when they opened so I did not have to wait, but they quickly got pretty busy. One of their stylists, James took me back and asked what I wanted. I recently cut my hair extremely short and I needed it cleaned up. I told him what I wanted and what I didn't want, specifying a specific vibe I wanted and he not only delivered, but was a delight to experience about 20 minutes with in conversation. Prior to going, I also checked out their website. Something I noticed on their websites that is cool is their space is accessible, you can request a silent hair cut, they are locally owned, and they have a 7 day fix-it policy, so if you leave and realize you want something different, you can go back and get it fixed! I came in for my usual gray coverage, and they did a GREAT job with the color. Unfortunately, the haircut was a very different experience. I showed the stylist a reference photo of my usual longer, layered cut. She said she wanted to even out my hair, which sounded completely reasonable, but she removed several inches without confirming how much length I was comfortable losing. I left with a short, rounded, mushroom-shaped bob that looked nothing like the reference and made my face look much rounder than I wanted. I was so mortified that I took a photo outside and sent it to my longtime stylist in Southern California, who replied, "whoa." I'm leaving three stars because the staff and atmosphere were lovely and the color was excellent. But I really hope the salon encourages clearer communication before making a major change in length. In the meantime, I'll be wearing a ponytail until it grows out.

I had a great consultation prior to my appointment and Jessica was very knowledgeable. She took GREAT care of my curls and took my natural hair color of black to this GORGEOUS coppery color with NO bleach. The cut was awesome as well! She really cut into my hair got off all of the dead ends even at my shortest layer! Her attention to detail was overly appreciated. My curls are perfectly in tact under this blowout! I'm very pleased. The salon is gorgeous as well. Parking was pricey BUT Everyone was very polite, helpful and efficient! They were getting people in&out so fast! They offered complimentary coffee&etc as well.

Well, months later it's the same; I'm usually there on a weekday early to midday (no one cutting hair/the shop just opened). When in the waiting area, each time I've been there, I observed hair on the floor, bench and the table holding the magazines. The waiting area is not particularly near the hair cutting area. I'm worried that the place is not cleaned very often or swept. Tracy & Company is located close to the Eastern Market metro and on the Circulator line (the bus stop is literally right outside of their shop, making it very convenient).
