I can never say enough wonderful things about Salim and his kindness. He is truly one of the most generous, loving and empathetic people I have ever met. I was traveling to DC to speak at a conference on behalf of my 5 year-old son battling a rare neurological disease. I had received a bad hair cut and highlights before I left Dallas. Salim took me in last minute and fixed everything. I explained to him why I was in DC and his kindness was palpable. He did not charge me for my hair. Rather, he said I put that money toward curing my son. I felt the salon feeling beautiful and nailed the speech the entire day. It is rare this day in age to meet someone like Salim.

Style Bar is a hidden gem, and Wesley is the crowned jewel! I am thrilled to have a salon in Dupont I can go to for all my hair needs - vibrant color, precision cut, and perfect blowout. Wesley takes his time to care for the long-term health of your hair, offering product recommendations you will really like and use. He's a wizard with blondes and can match root touch-ups and create full balayage expertly. The salon's interior is fresh, spacious, and inviting; and, Style Bar just installed curtains to provide privacy and a covid-conscious safety barrier between each client. Located on the second floor of the row-house, there is a hint of privacy you don't get at other salons. Bonus - metered and non-metered street parking nearby, plus restaurants and coffee shops within walking distance. And, you can book online!

Uff. Have to leave another review :) Last week I couldn't figure out how to login to the yelp account I have had for years. Turns out signing in via gmail sometimes doesn't work if you didn't originally start the account that way. ANYWAY: Walking in: - beautiful views of DuPont in every corner of this place. Huge windows, natural light. A cozy place ("welcome to my home: take a seat in my living room" vibe) to wait for your appointment is situated in the middle of the (huge!) salon: relax, sip some complimentary wine (or beverage of your choice) with a comfy couch, chairs, tv, and VIEWS to outdoorrs: you can listen to music, watch Netflix, or simply enjoy watching other people's cuts happens as you wait Experience: I might be biased... I followed many of the stylists from their old location (which has horrendous management) because they are so talented and because they are amazing people as well. MY stylist is Mandy Anderson, but EVERYONE. That works here. Is so talented. As I was getting my hair done by Mandy on this visit (the photos speak on their own on her amazing ability to execute color and cut perfectly), I had the absolute pleasure of chatting with other customers as they got their hair done. A cut and color like this takes a few hours. I talked to so many regulars who also - like me - loved their stylist and followed them to Style Bar DC. I heard multiple people's stories on their hair journeys and finding the person at Style Bar that was worth being their "follow forever" stylist. Anyway. My point here is: I already knew everyone was talented here but it was lovely hearing other people's experiences were like mine. My stylist (Mandy): Mandy is extreeeemely talented. She had been doing my hair for... actually only 6 months but it feels like way longer haha because she immediately understood me, my aesthetic, what I like and enjoy (and that I like to experiment). She is so good at explaining details to you - hair care, what cut or change will affect your look and explaining why you may or may not like it. Walking through color choices (I don't just mean rainbow colors, I mean normal hair color as well. I plan to go back to blonde eventually and Mandy explained the right choices for me to make to get there). I used to half half my head shaved/faded and Mandy also made sick designs on my head. She also has skill with a blade - actual barbershop blades, for finite detail (but also the electric razor that you know and love too). anyway. Like I said... I might be a little biased, because I already know everyone is talented and amazing. But that's why I need to let everyone know :)

Jai was fantastic and did a fantastic job cutting my curly hair. I rarely find someone that can manage my thick unruly hair. I will definitely be coming back!

Mandy does an amazing job with color and cuts - and has great skills with a blade as well. I have half my head shaved and she has done great designs. She is helping me transition growing the fade out slowly, and has done beautiful job with color. Mandy always has listened to my ideas and ran with them - as well as suggested great stuff that I know I love. This hair color actually was due to something she posted that she wanted to do and I wanted it right away. Can't wait for the next appointment!

My hair post-highlights! Thank you, Kanika!

As a want-to-be blonde with dark brown hair, I have struggled to find stylists that take the care and attention required to make my highlights look seamless and natural. Stylebar's Kanika is the best stylist for blondes in all of DC! I have been going to her for 2 years now, and I have referred 7-10 friends to her throughout this time - each of them has been amazed at Kanika's coloring abilities. The picture, which shows my hair after committing to Kanika as my stylist, shows her ability for itself! I'd also like to add that being blonde can be expensive; Kanika, however, recommends that I intermittently substitute toning sessions for dyes, therefore keeping me as blonde as possible without draining my wallet. I appreciate this greatly. She has the clients best interest at heart and - in all honesty - knows what I want and need more than I do. I cannot recommend her services enough! (Side note: She's also especially great with layered cuts and curtain bangs).

Review For Those Short On Time : Do not hesitate! Choose StyleBar DC! Jai and Jas will treat you like royalty and make you fabulous. Review For Those Who Like A Short Uplifting Story: This is a story about a hair disaster that turned into a platinum gold act of love and of beauty. My daughter had spent 8 months growing out her curls with the hopes of having them shaped into a super cute shaggy do. We went to a discount haircut chain that she'd been to before and were happy with. (This time she had a different stylist, though.) My daughter showed the new stylist a photo of what she wanted. The stylist did NOT even attempt the haircut in the picture. It was an awful boys haircut, that left her with absolutely no length in an uneven, unflattering shape. My daughter kept it together until we got outside of the store and then she burst into tears. I then scrambled to find a salon that was open and could take her immediately. For so long there had not been much to be excited about (pandemic, etc) but she had gotten excited about this haircut and I wanted to do all I could to fix it, NOW!!! I called and prayed for someone who would not only salvage her hair but would treat her special and pamper her. After calling at least 6-7 places, my prayer was finally answered x 2 when we found Jai and Jas at StyleBar DC!!! They could tell we were really upset and were very compassionate. My daughter showed them a picture of a MUCH shorter haircut she found online and Jai went right to work, talking to my girl the whole time and making her feel at ease. I kept trying to talk my daughter into trying some color, but when Jai suggested it, she was finally open to it! So Jas went to work turning her blonde hair to a stunning platinum blonde that looked so perfect on her new short style. I tear up thinking about how these two, talented, kind stylists turned that disaster haircut into such a positive experience. Right before we got to the salon my daughter had said, "There is no way anyone can fix this." And when we left she was so so happy. They certainly did more than fix it. They made her look and feel fabulous!!!

My hair looks so full and thick! Wish I had taken a before picture of my strandy ratty long hair
    Janice G.

Mandy gave me the cut I hoped for! She was patient and carefully evaluated my hair and listened to my concerns so that she could create the look that I really wanted. Even when you go to nice hair salons, usually you are rushed so that the stylist can see the next client. Mandy took her time to give my hair the attention it needed--including the most luxurious shampoo and conditioner experience I've ever had! I felt so relaxed at Style Bar with its zen vibe and privacy between customers as well as a clean and uncluttered environment. It was truly a treat to have my hair cut here.

Over the past five years, I have regularly visited Japanese hair salons in Los Angeles, New York City, and Boston while traveling frequently. In those experiences, even when a haircut did not fully match my preferred style or length, the technical quality was consistently strong, and any adjustments were handled professionally. Unfortunately, this experience was very different. One of the defining characteristics of a Japanese haircut is the smoothness, softness, precision, and careful organization of the layers. In my case, the cut lacked those qualities and appeared uneven and poorly structured (the photo from the back). I was also disappointed by the salon's management. Based on my experience, the overall operation and quality control did not reflect the standards typically associated with Japanese salons. Update (May 2026): Over the past 4 years, I have been with my Japanese hair stylist in New York. I returned to the salon to see Keiko because I was hoping to find a long-term stylist in Washington, DC. I had not had my haircut for 7 months prior to that because I delivered a baby in December 2025. Ozuki appeared to be one of the few salons in the area offering Japanese hairstylists. Immediately after the appointment, the haircut looked good due to the styling and blow-dry. However, within a few days, the shape became difficult to manage and appeared increasingly unstructured. The photo on my ID, taken approximately three weeks after the haircut, reflects how the cut settled over time. In contrast, the Japanese haircuts I have received elsewhere typically maintain their shape and balance for several months. Despite my concerns, I scheduled another appointment six weeks after the first haircut with Keiko because I genuinely hoped the issues could be corrected and that I could establish a relationship with a local stylist. At the same time, I let the management know that my haircut had bad form and hope that it can be resolved at the second appointment. Unfortunately, my interactions with management, Liz, were once again disappointing. Rather than addressing the concerns constructively, the response left me with little confidence that the salon could deliver the level of quality I was seeking. This is the first Japanese salon where I have repeatedly had unsatisfactory experiences. Based on the consistency of those experiences, I am not convinced that the salon operates at the standard typically associated with Japanese hairstyling.

Except for French woman named Sophie who can do decent cuts, there is no any other stylists skilled in precision haircuts. Came here and one of their top stylists gave me the worse cut I've ever had in my life. I've had to wait more than 6 months to grow my hair out from the horrible layers he did on me. He literally just chopped my hair up. The bottom of my hair in the back was an upside down triangle! Every stylist knows it should be straight across and maybe just a bit rounded on the sides! Any salon would have easily provided a (normal) soft, feminine, sexy, natural cut that is subtle perhaps at different skill levels. This guy clearly had no concept of how to cut (straight) hair because his clueless messes get disguised easily in wavy or curly hair or in a blow dry with curling brush.

UPDATE: Jillian threatened me with legal action for writing this review…read more After being a loyal client of Jillian for hair cuts and Adrian for brow waxing since at least 2016 until 2018, before I moved back to San Francisco and to Plano, Texas, I returned to NoVA/DC - moving on election day in Nov 2020 - because it seemed like NoVA/DC was being pragmatic about covid-19 regulations vs. the two extremes in CA & TX. I messaged with Jillian prior to my move on 11/3/2020 to learn how Karma was handling covid-19 regulations, because there were no capacity restrictions in Texas, so I hadn't had my hair cut or colored for 7-months - the longest I've ever gone. I saw her and Adrian on 11/22/2020, and even brought them both "welcome home" rose gold goodie bags with cards, Sugarfina rose gummies & chocolate caramels, and masks. I knew the global pandemic was especially hard on the beauty industry, because my aesthetician in San Francisco & her mom had to close 2 of their 3 salons in the Bay Area - in spite of being open since the 1970s. I was therefore sensitive to this fact. Which is why it was even more bizarre when I learned on social media in December 2020 that Jillian was moving to Dallas, Texas in January 2021, after she listened to my stories about Texas and pumped me for specifics about salons there, and at no point told me about her move. I later learned she told some clients about her move and not others, and that she expected Karma to tell me about it. However, the poor communication continued, given Karma never emailed me, the same way I never receive receipts for my "contact-less" transactions, and they still ask for my physical credit card, in spite of verifying its existence on file. The poor communication and the broken technology are both annoying. I let that go, and worked with Jillian - via social media - to book hair cut appointments with her for the next 6 months on Saturdays, however even when we agreed on my preferred time slot (4pm), she booked them for 5pm, because that worked best for her, she said. Not very friendly customer service for loyal clients! She also initially told the receptionist she was booked in February, which initiated our social media messages, requiring me to book with her directly. Then magically she's staying late for me! In parallel, as to the quality of Jillian's cuts, I started seeing her when she used to place a placemat on my shoulders to ensure her cuts were even, and I was always happy with how even they were over the years. That said, I've been very clear - including bringing drawings and instructions from my stylists in San Francisco, who do editorial work for Nordstrom & Gap, and trained in London & globally - that I don't like "shelves" of layers in my hair, I prefer long layers, I don't like corners, and I prefer professional cutting techniques to remove weight vs. thinning shears that butcher the ends of my hair without expertise. Jillian uses thinning shears, and my last cut included all the things I don't want mentioned above. It was, however, even at the bottom. I let this go, because I've had uneven cuts in DC, and I knew that by August 2021, I would need to find a new stylist anyway. I did, however, vocalize my concerns to Jillian yesterday & today about the inaccuracy of rapid covid tests, in parallel with Texas removing their mask mandate, while she travels back & forth between a covid hotspot & DC over the coming months, and she decided to cancel my appointments as a result. That's fine. I'd rather not contract covid, which is exactly why I left Texas. Which brings me to the brow waxes. Due to schedule availability, I booked an eyebrow wax with Erwin in December 2020, and his brow waxes are better - and more expensive - than Adrian's. Erwin's shape was superb, and similar to my favorite brow artist in San Francisco, who's regularly voted best brows. However, Erwin did not pluck or wax the hairs in between my brows, which I had to do myself. He also told me the gold dab of eye shadow I placed in the center corners of my eyes made me look cross-eyed, which I found insulting, so I suggested he remove it if he found it distracting. He asked me who gave me that make-up guidance, and "if they were black". Was that a racist comment? And why was he criticizing me, his paying client?!? I tried booking a brow wax in January 2021 with either Erwin or Adrian, and learned they were both at home quarantining with covid. Surprisingly, when I saw Adrian in February 2021, he criticized my brows, saying how much they needed a wax. Obvi! Why do he and Erwin feel it's OK to criticize their clients? Furthermore, they were uneven. Shockingly, I pointed this out to Adrian, and he agreed that my left brow was taller than my right, and re-plucked, yet when I got home, I still had to fix myself, comparing to my photo of my best brows in San Francisco. He also over trimmed the end of my right brow. If you like being treated as a client, look elsewhere.

I expressed that I really wanted the hair to look natural, blended and not ombre'd or striped. Both Zhen and the manager refused to try to make it right when I expressed my disappointment in my hair. Neither offering to help fix it, nor a refund. I had to pay $250 for something that was the opposite of what I wanted. After begging in person for them to help, I left another pleading phone message tonight for them to help me fix this mess, or refund my money as I can only imagine what a color correction will cost at another salon. I absolutely hate writing bad reviews about people and wouldn't have posted this if I didn't feel completely swindled, disrespected and brushed aside. I'm really hoping they'll get back to me, and I'll update this review if they decide to do the right thing. In the meantime, I'm beyond disappointed and disgusted!
