Unfortunately I had a bad experience. I think more attention needs to be paid to what a client asks for. I asked for long layers and wanted my hair to look thicker and fuller because I have fine hair. The hairdresser used hair thinning shears and my hair feels so thin now. Those should never be used on fine hair. I have never left a salon with my hair feeling thinner than when I went in. Luckily the color is okay but I am traumatized. read more

She makes me feel so comfortable and she has grown to be a friend. We have wonderful conversations, and I feel totally cool with telling her if I want my hair a certain way. She always delivers! The first time she saw me years back she fixed a very uneven haircut and brought my hair back to life. I knew I had found my girl! I love her new space - exposed brick, huge mirrors, and very cool elevated/electronic shampoo chairs (I am always uncomfortable in those chairs, but no more!). I don't normally write bad reviews, but I wish someone would have warned me before going here. I went in for ombre highlights and a cut and left wishing that I had never stepped foot in that salon. The owners and staff seemed like nice people, but my hairstylist (Suat) wasn't the best hairdresser. Firstly, when Suat asked me what I wanted to do with my hair, he didn't let me finish a single sentence. It wasn't more than 15 seconds of sitting in his chair before he said " I know just what you need" and left to mix the color. I knew there was no way he had a clue what I wanted and although he wasn't rude, the lack of communication made me extremely nervous. I came in with medium brown hair looking for an Ombre, and finished with nearly platinum blonde hair to the roots. I was absolutely mortified. Not only was the color nothing near what I had requested, the highlights themselves were awful. Some spots on my head had huge chunky highlights varying between a 1/2 in and 1 in away from the root. Other sections looked decently done, but still not what I wanted. If I had gone to super cuts or had a girl friend dye my hair using box color while she was drunk, this is the result I would expect. When I went back a few days later to have Suat fix it, he did manage to make my hair look decent enough to go out in public, but it is still not within light years of what I wanted or what I would expect a moderately competent hair dresser to provide. Unless you want to pay $180 for someone to make you hair look worse than it did before you came in, go somewhere else. read more

I bought a Gilt deal and called to make an appointment. Murat, the owner answered, and when I mentioned to him that I wanted to make an appointment he was incredibly nice and accommodating. Usually in DC, the owner/staff give you a hard time if you're using a Groupon/Living Social deal. I was impressed right off the bat with his high energy and exceptional customer service. He came 30-minutes early before the salon opened to fit me in. My previous stylist spent five minutes cutting my hair, I was SUPER impressed that Murat really took his time and actually cut my hair for 30-minutes. He's 100% worth the $100 price tag for his haircuts. He gave me a great blowout, great cut, and really, really tried to meet my needs. I would highly recommend making an appt with him! You won't be disappointed. He has great energy, is talented, and wants to make sure his clients are happy. Oh and he even cut Victoria Bechham's hair when he worked at the Four Seasons! Side note: He owns the Coffee Bean across from the salon which has organic coffee. I highly recommend it. I stopped it for a mocha after my cut and it was super tasty. Desperately in need of a hair style change, I purchased a Gilt deal for a haircut. The least positive part of my experiences was calling to make an appointment. I asked for a weekend appointment, and he offered me Tuesday. No. Then Wednesday. No. After specifying SATURDAY or SUNDAY, I got an appointment for a Saturday afternoon. Perfect! I have curly hair, so I am very picky about who I let get close my locks. When I arrived, the owner gave my hair a once over and sent me to to be washed. I expected him to take more time looking at my curls, but I gave him the benefit of the doubt and didn't question him. And I'm thankful I did! My cut was perfect! I had a hard time putting in words what kind of style I wanted. I told him I wanted to get rid of my "mushroom" (curly haired girls know what I'm talking about-- flat on top and poofy on the bottom). He knew exactly what kind of cut my hair needed. He used some tool I had never seen before. It felt like someone was tearing out my hair. So, not the most pleasant hair cut experience, but I was pleasantly surprised with the results. If the cost of a haircut ($100+) wasn't double what I normally pay, I would definitely come back. read more

I came to Salon Upstairs with a balayage coupon and I wish I hadn't. I had grown out highlights in my hair and all I got were added highlights at the bottom. I did a lot of research on the balayage technique and it was nothing close. It simply was highlighting. Suat kept saying how awesome the color was and I told him it looked like more highlights, his response was "that's what balayage looks like." When I left and saw my color in better lighting I realized there was nothing special to my hair and I still had a dark root. I called back and expressed my disappointment; his brother asked me to return to take a look. He was ready for argument and no where interested in helping me get the color I was looking for. He emphasized balayage was what I got it, I showed him a picture of what I asked and asked if my hair looked like this. He had no problems raising his voice at me in front of all the customers. He told Suat to add more blonde highlights to my hair and not touch my root. I again explained I don't want highlights I paid for balayage. I started to get up and tell him he's not listening to what I'm asking for nor offering me what I paid for. He had no issues with me walking away. Ultimately, Suat colored my hair my natural dark and got rid of everything. Suat is nice but being nice doesn't make you a good colorist. This is a "factory" of quickly putting in "highlight balayage" but not giving the customer what their asking for. I definitely wouldn't come again and wouldn't recommend it. I'm not sure how good the other stylist are but the two brothers aren't recommend. read more

I have super long hair and it's hard to find someone who knows how to cut and style it without cutting it shorter than I want or taking too much weight off. He never rushes, and does a flawless job. My roommate has even started going to Suat even though we have totally opposite types of hair. Her once brittle, thin hair now looks full of body and fabulous. My main reason for that is because my hair is fine and usually doesn't look much different no matter where I go. However, I had the best haircut of my life with Murat! This salon isn't very conveniently located for me unless I drove, so I took Uber there and back, which made the cut nearly full price. I went here with a Gilt City coupon for a haircut and blow-dry. The salon is located upstairs above another hair salon, which was a bit awkward for me when I went in and had to explain to the downstairs receptionist that I had an appointment at another business. Upstairs salon itself is a bit small but overall the atmosphere is nice and the staff are friendly. Unlike the other reviews, my hairstylist wasn't the owner Murat, but another stylist named Suat, who took care of me right away. I didn't want to do anything drastic with my hair--I just wanted a little trim, change the shape of my ends, and fix my bangs, which have grown out. I explained what I wanted before my shampoo and style and he seemed to understand what I was saying. The haircut itself went well--it was actually probably the fastest haircut I've ever gotten, or at least it felt that way, which I didn't have a problem with. I had to remind him a few times that I wanted to re-style my bangs, though, and it seemed that he did not understand what I was saying until the last time. He was a bit reluctant to give me side bangs since he thought I would look better without them, but I've had side bangs for years now and a major reason I booked the appointment was to get them cut again. In the end, he did end up giving me the bangs, and I was very pleased with the end result. Like other reviewers have mentioned, the salon is a bit pricey normally, and it is not very accessible--I had to take an Uber from the Dupont metro. AWFUL, JUST AWFUL. AVOID - THEY JUST WANT TO RIP YOU OFF AND TAKE YOUR MONEY WITHOUT GIVING YOU WHAT YOU PAID FOR Not sure what the previous poster was talking about. I purchased two separate vouchers, 1 for haircut, 1 for highlights and the owner refused to honor it so basically I was just forced full price for the service since he refused to allow me to use both in the same appointment, saying I wouldn't be a new client anymore. I wanted to boook both services back to back so YES, yes I would still be a new client. It's not like I purchased two haircuts or 2 highlights. The only reason I'm even trying this place is because of the Gilt and now this awful place and Gilt ripped me off the $50 I paid for the haircut and neither one is willing to own up and take responsibility for it. Since the Gilt sale already ended the owner has already been paid and is just happily sitting on his pile of cash and refusing clients. EDIT: Not sure what several previous posters were talking about actually. The owner gave me an incredibly hard time since I had a Gilt coupon. Not nice or accommodating AT ALL. I would give Salon Upstairs 4.5/5. I've been looking for a while for a moderately priced salon that does balayage highlights. The salon isn't cheap but the Gilt City deal for balayage made it worth it ($90). Suat did my balayage and the result was absolutely fantastic! I showed him some pictures of what I wanted my hair to look like. I have dark dark brown (almost black) hair and I wanted subtle brown/caramel highlights to add some dimension. I got exactly that. They weren't so subtle that you couldn't tell I had anything done, but not too stark either. The actual balayage process is a lot shorter than the regular highlighting process. You don't have to sit under a heat lamp. Suat put the balayage highlights in and waited about 7-10 minutes before washing it out. Then someone else added a glaze, which lasted another 5 minutes or so. The Gilt voucher didn't include a blow out, so Suat only dried the hair around my face. The only reason I gave a 4.5 instead of 5 is because they don't accept credit cards for tips. I didn't have enough cash on me, so I had to run down the street to an ATM. Overall, I had a great experience. Suat and Murat were very friendly and fun to talk to. The balayage turned out great. I absolutely love my hair! I'd definitely go back to Suat again! read more

The last time I had my hair colored was a decade ago...so I took the chance and purchased the deal, scheduled my appointment and got it done! Let me tell you, Murad did an awesome job! It was a goof up on the part of Gilt and Murat, the owner because I should only have been able to purchase one set of three. Despite this, he was willing to allow me to use all six blowouts. To me, when a business owner is willing to follow through on a commitment, he gets big kudos and my vote. I had my first blowout this morning, and within 25 minutes my hair was washed and blown dry and it looked beautiful! The salon is clean and elegant, and Murat and his staff (Rosie washed my hair) were welcoming and thorough. I bought a Gilt voucher for balayage highlights and was so very happy with the services I received from Murat. He gave me amazing highlights and the color is beautiful and perfect for fall! I was so pleased with Murat that I decided to also get a haircut with my highlights. He was so sweet and accommodating and gave me one of the BEST haircuts I have ever had. I also have to say that I have never had a blowout as great as the one that he gave me. I explained to him that my hair is flat and that I can never get any volume when I am styling it. He thinned my hair and gave me layers that made my hair feel lighter than ever. The blowout was fantastic and the volume he gave me has now lasted into the second day. I could NOT recommend him more. I will say that the price for a cut is a little high but it is 100% worth it. Treat yourselves! I didn't think Suat could get any better...and he did! Though my last balayage was so pretty, I put my hair up a ton, so I gave Suat the nearly impossible job of highlighting my hair but having no highlight streaks when I put it up. Oh, and I also asked him to highlight my hair but make it look incredibly natural and subtle. Sure enough, he did exactly that. People have commented on how great my hair looks, but haven't been able to identify that I got it balayaged--so clearly it looks extremely natural! He lightened my hair in such a way that when I put it up in a ponytail, there are no streaks. Suat clearly listens to what you want and delivers.
