I had become disappointed with my go-to place and decided to give Ayse (pronounced Ay-sha) a call. She talked to me about what I wanted, explained what she thought the best options were given how thin and blonde my hair is, and made sure to give me very natural looking highlights. The next day, I noticed my hair was just a touch more copper than I prefer and she welcomed me back to the salon right away to put more toner in it. Another Yelp success story! I have relatively simple, straight blonde hair so I don't think it should be THAT hard to find an affordable place to get some cut & color. It took me 8 years when I lived in Miami and even when I finally found a place, I didn't love the price. Five months into living in DC and voila! my dreams have already come true! Unlike other salons I considered for my first hair venture in the District, Polin is flexible with schedules. I called on a Saturday morning to book for an upcoming weekday and Yusuf offered to fit me in that day- something that while I didn't need, I appreciated! Come appointment time, he listened to what I was envisioning and made it happen. He didn't chop off more than what I asked for as so many stylists do and my highlights haven't looked this good in years (since they were natural!). This review is for the nail service. I bought a voucher on Gilt for spa mani/pedi which was worth $100 and I paid $58. (Supposed to be 40% off deal.) When I got there, I wanted to upgrade to the gel mani which was not a problem, but they charged me $15 extra for that. Their spa mani and pedi each cost $30 and $50 which together is $80. So $20 less than the deal I supposedly bought, and the gel mani was $35. I just don't understand why I had to pay extra $15. So technically, I got $10 off.(about 15%) The owner and the nail technician were very nice. Heidi was thorough and good. And the salon was clean. I understand it's a small business and trying to get more customers in but wish I had known the exact deal I was getting. read more

I hate to leave this review, but I was led astray by all the 5-star reviews, so I felt like I needed to. This place may be great for straight or blond hair, but I caution you against going here if you have more textured or curly hair. I am new to the area and found this salon via Yelp and decided to try it with all the positive reviews. I am getting married in a couple months and asked for a really small trim, after explaining that I've been trying to grow my hair out all year and just want to clean up the layers and keep it healthy. I left with awkward short layers - one side of my hair is shorter than the other (it looks like a chunk is just missing) - and way too much cut off on the ends. (Note: I made a comment about it mid-cut, but he assured me he wasn't taking off too much and kept going). I have curly hair and was hoping for at least a good blowout at the end, but didn't even get that because they only use blow dryers and don't have flat irons, which I need to just smooth out my hair since it's curly. I am so disappointed and will be desperately trying to regrow my hair before the wedding... and no more new stylists until then. Again, this salon may work for you if you have straight hair or are getting it dyed, but was a big disappointment for this curly-haired girl. read more

Yusuf was extraordinarily nice and let me take the appointment anyways. He went above and beyond and made sure I got the highlights I wanted. My family and I have been going to Yusuf for over 7 years. He is the best hair stylist around. If you don't know what type of cut or blow dry to get, he will surely give you one that he thinks is fit and you WONT be disappointed. He has been doing my color for the last 2 years and everywhere I go, I get compliments! His blow drys are out of this world and will easily last a couple days if you have a bunch of events to attend. I just had my first appointment with Yusuf. He did a wonderful job, and cut my hair perfectly. I was impressed with his skills as a stylist, but was equally impressed and grateful for his care in protecting me (and himself) from possible exposure to Covid-19. He took elaborate care, by allowing only 1 customer at a time in the shop and covering the chair with a disposable plastic liner. We both wore masks throughout the appointment, and he wore a protective plastic shield around his face, as well. Yusuf provided convenient hand sanitizers, and even thought to sanitize my credit card. I have been doing everything I can to avoid the virus, and felt completely safe in his shop. One of the worst salon experiences ever. I went in with photos of the color that I wanted, but Yusef told me it was impossible for him to really know what the colors were that were used in the photo because of things like Photoshop and the lighting in the picture. That was fair and I understood that, so I asked him for his professional opinion on what we could do to achieve a brighter, sunnier blond . He pulled out a book of hair color swatches and asked me to choose one of them. I couldn't possibly do that because I really didn't know what I was looking at. He advised me to put red into my hair, which is not something that I wanted to do, but he said that I would have to if I wanted to look more like the picture. I reminded him that we were not trying to go by the picture for all the reasons that he gave me. All I wanted was his professional opinion to achieve the color that I wanted and he refused to give it to me. He insisted that I choose colors out of the book, but when I asked him what they would look like in my hair he couldn't answer that. We went around and around for several minutes and then I realized that it wasn't going to work and I thanked him for his time. I really got the feeling that he didn't want to do my hair and was not at all interested in retaining me as a client. I have never been in a salon where the owner was so dismissive. I think he does beautiful work and I know people whose hair he has colored, so I was surprised when he wasn't willing to work with me to help me chose a color. I will not return nor will I ever suggest the salon to anyone I know. All in all a very difficult and disappointing experience. read more

At first I was a little taken back because Yusef was with another client when my service started and I didn't get to talk to him uninterrupted about what we were going to do to my hair. I see Yusef every 6 months religiously for Brazilian Blowout (BB) treatments. I hate my naturally frizzy-proned curly hair, and the BB treatments have been a life changer. Yusef's BB treatments allow me to withstand DC's humidity frizz-free, and I've been able to reduce my hair maintenance time dramatically. If you know about BB treatments, you understand that you want to avoid being exposed to the strong chemical smell common during application. Yusef's salon is well ventilated, and his expertise in applying the treatment keeps fumes at a minimum which is very important to me. I've also gotten hair cuts from Yusef and he's a fantastic stylist. Highly recommend Yusef if you want to try BB and a great stylist. read more

Yusuf was absolutely wonderful! There was a scheduling conflict with my original appointment (from him end) and he bent over backwards to accommodate an alternative time/date that worked for me. I got a cut and Brazilian blowout. This was my first time at the salon, but I'll absolutely be back! He was extremely detail oriented with the blowout and listened carefully to what I wanted for my cut. I've gotten keratin/Brazilian treatments before and this was by far my best experience. The treatment itself actually smelled pleasant (past experiences have left a gnarly stench in my hair that took weeks to get out) and I was cleared to wash my hair after 24 hours. Absolutely LOVED this place. The salon itself is very clean and brightly decorated with lots of fresh flowers and bamboo plants. Yusuf cut my hair - I just needed a trim. It was honestly the first time I had ever asked for "just a trim" and actually gotten just that. I told him I didn't want any length off of it and he totally listened. After he was done cutting he gave me a blow out and a full 36 hours later it's still completely intact! Also the quality of the haircut and the whole experience was at the caliber of salons in D.C. I paid $100+ at urban style lab for years but then I happened upon this place when I couldn't get an appointment in time at usl. Thank goodness because the lead stylist here is so talented, so well priced, and so not overdoing with any overly hip vibe. Walked away with a great cut that lasted twice as long as cuts at usl. The stylist reminded me how simple things should be. If you want an experience with cool music and eye candy then usl is great but if you just want an incredible cut so you can get on with your life then this place is for you. read more

Needed to find a place closer to my apartment to get my hair done and, after seeing so many positive reviews, decided to book with Yusuf! I highlight and occasionally color my blonde hair, and Yusuf was attentive to my history and recommended a dual process that completely transformed my hair. He also helpfully recommended how to deal with some damage I had from a bad blow dryer and offered advice on what to do to keep my hair looking great going forward. And when I asked for a few inches off the bottom to remove damage, Yusuf checked in before every snip to make sure the length was still acceptable! I needed to get a mani/pedi for a weekend trip. Heidi at the salon was extremely thorough with her work and so sweet! The pedicure was SO relaxing and at the end of the service, she set me up with a hot wax hand treatment that still has my hands feeling smooth! I will definitely be coming back here to get my nails done after work (and wait out the traffic before driving back to MD). The only piece of advice I have is to maybe call ahead of time to make an appointment. While I was getting my pedicure, two other customers walked in and would have had to wait 20-30 minutes, as Heidi was the only one there to do nails. read more

Review is only for a pedicure. I enjoyed the experience but not happy with my nails. The woman was very nice and gave me one of the best foot and leg massages. But, the actual results - not great. The polish is chipping just over 1 week later and the way she clipped the toenail edges, they're digging into my toes. I'm a little worried about ingrown toenails. read more

I didn't like it, told him my hair was too big, and he just kept giving me a blowout expressing his irritation with me for not wanting it.
