Over the past five years, I have regularly visited Japanese hair salons in Los Angeles, New York City, and Boston while traveling frequently. In those experiences, even when a haircut did not fully match my preferred style or length, the technical quality was consistently strong, and any adjustments were handled professionally. Unfortunately, this experience was very different. One of the defining characteristics of a Japanese haircut is the smoothness, softness, precision, and careful organization of the layers. In my case, the cut lacked those qualities and appeared uneven and poorly structured (the photo from the back). I was also disappointed by the salon's management. Based on my experience, the overall operation and quality control did not reflect the standards typically associated with Japanese salons. Update (May 2026): Over the past 4 years, I have been with my Japanese hair stylist in New York. I returned to the salon to see Keiko because I was hoping to find a long-term stylist in Washington, DC. I had not had my haircut for 7 months prior to that because I delivered a baby in December 2025. Ozuki appeared to be one of the few salons in the area offering Japanese hairstylists. Immediately after the appointment, the haircut looked good due to the styling and blow-dry. However, within a few days, the shape became difficult to manage and appeared increasingly unstructured. The photo on my ID, taken approximately three weeks after the haircut, reflects how the cut settled over time. In contrast, the Japanese haircuts I have received elsewhere typically maintain their shape and balance for several months. Despite my concerns, I scheduled another appointment six weeks after the first haircut with Keiko because I genuinely hoped the issues could be corrected and that I could establish a relationship with a local stylist. At the same time, I let the management know that my haircut had bad form and hope that it can be resolved at the second appointment. Unfortunately, my interactions with management, Liz, were once again disappointing. Rather than addressing the concerns constructively, the response left me with little confidence that the salon could deliver the level of quality I was seeking. This is the first Japanese salon where I have repeatedly had unsatisfactory experiences. Based on the consistency of those experiences, I am not convinced that the salon operates at the standard typically associated with Japanese hairstyling.

He literally just chopped my hair up. The bottom of my hair in the back was an upside down triangle! Every stylist knows it should be straight across and maybe just a bit rounded on the sides! Any salon would have easily provided a (normal) soft, feminine, sexy, natural cut that is subtle perhaps at different skill levels. This guy clearly had no concept of how to cut (straight) hair because his clueless messes get disguised easily in wavy or curly hair or in a blow dry with curling brush.

I appreciate the attempt to make this right although it still seems somewhat half-hearted. 4/27/18 Please look up "Zhen Lin" on yelp to see my review of the stylist who did my hair and more pics of the highlights she gave me. There was obviously a major misunderstanding. Why on earth anyone would want super blonde highlights on top of dark brown hair in 2018 is beyond me. This is not at all what I asked for. I asked for a natural looking balayage and showed Zhen literally four different pictures of examples I liked. I expressed that I really wanted the hair to look natural, blended and not ombre'd or striped. Both Zhen and the manager refused to try to make it right when I expressed my disappointment in my hair. Neither offering to help fix it, nor a refund. I had to pay $250 for something that was the opposite of what I wanted. After begging in person for them to help, I left another pleading phone message tonight for them to help me fix this mess, or refund my money as I can only imagine what a color correction will cost at another salon. I absolutely hate writing bad reviews about people and wouldn't have posted this if I didn't feel completely swindled, disrespected and brushed aside. I'm really hoping they'll get back to me, and I'll update this review if they decide to do the right thing. In the meantime, I'm beyond disappointed and disgusted!

Shockingly Deceptive Practices - Buyer Beware! FAKE HAIR EXTENSIONS! After being a loyal customer since August 2021, my recent experience has forced me to reevaluate the trustworthiness of this establishment. The issues began with a bizarre request about not bringing my dog, which LoAnn never bothered to address. Little did I know, this foreshadowed the extensive problems I would encounter with the hair extensions and services I paid for. In January 2022, I shelled out a whopping $950 for what was claimed to be "high-quality, 100% real human hair." What a joke! The problems commenced with color mismatches, and the only solution offered was to add more rows, or to continue to come back so they could attempt to re-dye it (which I did, three times). By June, the extensions were falling out in clumps, despite my diligent efforts to care for them. The final straw came when I discovered, through an entirely different salon, that the hair I purchased from here was nothing but cheap, plastic-based imitation hair. Shockingly, this fraudulent misrepresentation was known to both LoAnn (owner) and Tasha (stylist), as evident from a Yelp review by another disgruntled customer (scroll down to see Ashley B's review). This revelation leaves me questioning the integrity of the entire operation. I am not merely dissatisfied; I am outraged! The $2,780 I wasted on fake hair, misrepresented as premium quality, is unacceptable. I demanded a refund. Instead, the owner sent me on a wild goose chase, forwarding emails to me from the entity that provided them with the hair. I articulated that I had no business with that entity and continued to seek the refund due from the salon, only to receive no response. I am left to choice but to escalate this matter to the Better Business Bureau, DC Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection, and the Attorney General. I am also preparing for a lawsuit and exploring the possibility of a class-action lawsuit to address the systematic deception of extension customers over the years. I was torn between two and three stars here, but I tried this place after reading the high ratings and rave reviews and I just really have to disagree. I came to Salon L'eau to switch back to my natural dark brown hair, after having had it dyed red by my stylist in California a few months previously. I explained to LoAnn that I wanted a dark, cool-tone chocolate brown and no red, and she said that she could do it. Apparently it's pretty hard to get red out of hair, so if she'd told me she didn't think she could do it that would have been fine and I'd have gone somewhere else. I'm sure it's obvious where this is going: she just put brown dye over the red, left it on for a really long time while beginning work on another young woman, and when an assistant rinsed out the dye, it appeared to still be red. I then sat dripping for about fifteen minutes while she tried to find someone to blow it out for me. It wasn't just that the dye didn't take; during the time she was working on my hair, LoAnn was full of ideas about how she should complete change my style to make me "more sexy." I told her that I was happy with the style I had and that "sexy" wasn't really my goal, but she was really aggressive about trying to push some of these ideas, which I disagreed with, including short bangs, and thinning my hair out through the middle with a razor blade (??). When I politely told her I'd think about it, she seemed offended, and ignored me the rest of the time I was there. So by the time I'd been sitting with wet, red, evidently extremely unsexy hair for fifteen minutes I just wanted to find out what color it actually was and go home. I asked it someone could just blow a bit of the top out so I could see the color and LoAnn got mad at me for being impatient (out of fairness: at this point I absolutely was impatient, but I was still trying to be polite) and told me it wasn't red. I looked at it in the salon light, outside, in the bathroom, and it was slightly darker but clearly red. I'm giving this place two stars and did consider three because it's a gorgeous space, the assistants seemed nice, and LoAnn didn't insist on charging me for the color, which I really appreciated. Everyone else seems to like her, so maybe she was just having a bad day. read more

I just visited Salon L'eau for the first time this weekend, having followed my favorite hairstylist, Greg Whittington, over after his recent departure from Erwin Gomez Salon across the street. I was very pleased with both the staff and location. The salon is slightly offset from Wisconsin Avenue and it is just enough to be close and convenient, to the center of town, but it is situated on a pleasantly shaded, tree lined street with the remnants of the old Georgetown trolley tracks, which I thought added to its charm. The building has the appearance of a refurbished, historic townhome that the neighborhood is reknowned for. It's cheerful yellow exterior is very welcoming and the entrance was bright and airy, where I was greeted by friendly faces at the front desk. While I always really enjoyed Erwin Gomez, and it remains a fantastic salon, this space had a little less of the hustle and bustle and it was much easier to have a conversation without the din of the loud music and such drowning you out. Greg's chair is in the lower/downstairs portion of the salon and it had plenty of natural light from the patio canopied in a giant skylight, as well as a very spa-like, peaceful/relaxing element to it that makes you want to take a deep breath and enjoy being pampered. This aesthetic made my experience there comforting and enjoyable. I highly recommend Greg to anyone that is search of an EXCELLLENT colorist, especially with blonde tones and highlights. I usually walk in and give him a fairly vague idea of what I want through description, and can totally trust that with his artistry, I will leave with an amazing cut /shape and color. I have yet to be disappointed in the 2+ years I have been going to him. The salon also carries/uses Kerastase products, which I am particulary fond of, so that was an added bonus for me. i completely agree with the other reviewers. went to jean luc which is now called salon leau and lo-ann lai is the owner. i'd never heard of this place before, so i was kind of nervous, but after reading the review on here i decided i'd give lo-ann a try. made a last minute appointment with lo-ann (she was nice enough to squeeze me in) and she was AMAZING! this was honestly the best haircut i've had in years...and as a plus, she was sooo nice. we had fun chatting the whole time she cut my hair, and normally i feel awkward talking to a stylist i've only just met. i asked her to keep my hair long, but told her that i wanted to add some side bangs and some funky new layers. not only did she do exactly what i asked, she exceeded my expectations! i've been getting compliments on my hair everywhere i go! i will definitely be going back to this place...i'm not surprised the other reviewer's been a loyal client for years! *note: if youre short on cash, just go for the haircut. lo-ann's pretty passionate about Kerastase hair products (which are wonderful but very expensive!) and may try to get you to buy some when you check out. also, make sure you actually HAVE cash because they don't take credit cards and you'll need to pay for your haircut + tip with cash. read more

When my former stylist left DC three years ago, she referred me to Tori Platania at Salon L'eau (rather than someone in her own salon). I was nervous, having suffered through many a bad cut in the past, but I couldn't have been happier with Tori. I have long, very thick black hair which is difficult to style because it's heavy and coarse. What I like about Tori is that she listens to my concerns and collaborates to give me the look I want. For example, I used to dread the word "layers" because my hair often came out thin and choppy. Tori took time to explain why her particular way would work and the mistakes past stylists probably made in layering my thick hair. I trusted her judgment and have not been disappointed in the three years I've known her. She also does great color. My hair is naturally black and I've seen other Asian women's highlights--they often look brassy or unnaturally light. She uses a combination of high and low lights, taking into consideration the season (we go darker in winter, lighter in summer), to give me a warm, natural-looking color. I get a lot of compliments on my hair and I can honestly say that I'm incredibly happy with and grateful to Tori for making my hair fun and beautiful! read more

All those ladies who have been salon searching or staring longingly into the mirror, wishing their hair would suddenly look like a Victoria's Secret model's (or like a David Yurman campaign), look no further! I spent a long time reading reviews and looking at "best of" lists before booking with Valerie at Salon L'eau. I've had my hair styled by Valerie and I constantly get compliments on it! Valerie looked at my hair and knew exactly what to do. My hair is curly and very difficult to work with. Valerie has not only been able to tame my curls but also gives me tips on how to style it and the products I should use. Whether I wear my hair curly or straight, it always looks great and I owe that all to Valerie! It was wonderful to watch her work. After my wash and blow dry I looked fabulous and had the kind of hair I'd been looking at in magazines. She makes you feel like your her only client, taking her time to make you feel confortable and relaxed. Tori is every woman's dream hair stylist, with her new york up the minute training, making her female clients look stunning with younger looks and terrific styling and color. Wherever I go in the world everyone wants to know who did my color. I have been with Tori for 10 years, for styling, brazilian straightening, and color. Tori combines your personal and professional needs with style that enhances your own beauty instead of the standard Washington bobs. She is thoughtful and honest and has fit me in with appointments whatever my professional needs. I feel 10 years younger with Tori doing my hair and I would never go to anyone else. I have been seeing Tori Platania for about 5 years now and it is a testament to her remarkable talent that I brave Georgetown, which I loathe, every few weeks just so that I can see her. Honestly, I'll never leave her. I have wildly, improbably, hilariously curly hair-- and it takes a very special stylist to handle it. Whenever I step into other salons to pick up products, other stylists gush over my hair and ask me who does it for me. Of course, I tell them all about Tori. And not only is Tori great with curls, she's great with color-- and it's not easy to get reds right. What I look for in a stylist is someone who can look at my weird hair and my face and figure out what'll look best without my having to micromanage. After all, what do I know? I'm not a stylist. Lucky for me, I've found that kind of professional in Tori. She totally knows what she's doing and I trust her more than I have anyone else who has ever done my hair. read more

So happy with the color correction I received yesterday at Salon L'eau. Kate did an amazing job removing the color from my hair and reverting it back to a lustrous silver, with lowlights, to more closely match my roots. This was my first hair appointment since the pandemic began and my first visit ever to Salon L'eau. So glad I discovered this lovely salon and the thoughtful and talented people who work there. I was very impressed with Kate's expertise since color correction is very difficult and other salons had told me that it's impossible to do what I asked for. Kate was very attentive to me every step of the way, checking my hair throughout the multiple processes and ensuring all was going well. I followed my long-time masseuse Rosanna to Salon L'eau. It is a lovely place, everyone is warm and welcoming and I'm happy to be a new patron. Rosanna is the very best at her profession. I get a weekly massage for therapeutic reasons and have gone to many people in the past. Rosanna knows what she is doing, is a fine person and I never fail to come away feeling better than when I arrived. I highly recommend Rosanna to anyone who is wanting or needing to ease soreness, de-stress or simply relax. I would like to suggest to the management a way to make the experience better. Noise from stylists in high heels or heavy footwear directly above the massage room is something I experience every week. If they could wear shoes that do not have such a loud impact. I return every week because of Rosanna. If it were not Rosanna I'm sorry to say I would go elsewhere. read more

I first visited Salon L'eau in the Spring of 2018 when I followed my wonderful stylist Paul Bosserman there. I have been going to Paul for over 30 years and can attest that he is truly, "one of the best" stylist in the Washington DC area. I always leave with a fabulous precision haircut while enjoying Paul's in depth wisdom and great sense of wit. Since I've been gong to Paul for sometime, I have had various cuts and styles and I can always depend on him to be up to speed on hair cuts, products, and even blow dry techniques. I always look forward to my appointments, not only for a great haircut, but great conversation as well. Paul takes the time to get to know his clients and is extremely respectful, courteous and a genuinely kind person. With that said, he has found the perfect match in Salon L'Leau. I wanted to get hair extensions and Lo-Ann told me that for extensions there were 2 people in her salon she really liked - Valerie Carrasquillo being one of them. Carey MacPherson has been my sytlist for years because she is a true professional. She has cut and colored my hair, highlighted it and styled it in many different ways, and I have always loved it. She takes her time and really tries to give you the look you're after. I love the attention to detail, down to how she watches the timer, watches the foils come out, watches the color emerge and always adds on a conditioner or gloss treatment, if she thinks it's necessary. I don't know a lot about hair, and that's why I trust Carey to make mine look good. YOU MUST SEE TORI FOR THE BRAZILIAN BLOWOUT! I have been with Tori for over 5 years (and even followed her to this salon!). She suggested the blowout as a change of pace for me and SHE WAS RIGHT! I have very curly, long hair which can be tough and time consuming to deal with in the DC heat and humidity of summer. The process took some time but only because my hair is very long--but you only need 3 inches of hair or more to do it. I LOVE IT!! I had been going to Tori Platania for 4-5 years, and saw her at another salon as well. I too had major issues with Tori's attitude and in her being unpleasant when it came to my input as to how I wanted my hair. You can't continue to treat clients in that manner and expect them to come back for more, as there are lots of talented hairdressers in DC to compete with. I have now found a very professional and nice hairdresser who is SO easy to talk to, and gladly listens to all of my concerns and suggestions. I actually enjoy getting my hair done now, and no longer have to "walk on eggshells" as I did when Tori was doing my hair. What an improvement! read more

Paul Bosserman is an expert stylist who has more than thirty years of experience. He has been cutting my hair for over ten years and I can trust him to give me a good cut every single time. He takes his time and cuts with precision which is something I really appreciate. He knows what works for me and what doesn't. I have had more than my share of bad experiences with other stylists (not at Salon l'Eau) but with Paul I can relax. I'd like to let the world know about my favorite hair-stylist, Tori Platania at Salon L'Eau. Tori has been doing my hair for the past 18 months and it's never looked better! She knows what will work and what won't and is very honest about maintenance for some of the more extreme color ideas I've had. We've colored my hair several times and it always looks amazing....and she is able to look at a cut in a magazine and replicate it perfectly. She is also very charming and friendly. I highly recommend Bach Lam, a stylist at Salon L'Eau. It is no overstatement--Bach changed my life, or at least the part of my life that was preoccupied with my hair, my fine, limp, blah hair. Bach is a master cutter and stylist and a wizard at coloring. He has transformed my frog fur into a stylish mane on which I get many compliments. And he is a terrific, funny, caring person to boot. I have been a client of Bertrand Capel at the Salon L'Eau for almost 2 years for color, cut and style, and I have received excellent service with every visit. Bertrand does magic with both the color and cut, and my hair is a lot healthier since I have started going to Salon L'Eau. I'm especially amazed at the precision with which he trims my hair, which can be seen especially when I tie it in a half pony tail or pony tail. You can also book appointments for Akashic readings or with a reiki master in their well appointed healing rooms. Upstairs, there's a simple and beautiful space for styling but at night you can find a variety of health and wellness classes to appeal to any age or background.
