main focus was to blend my brown roots w my blonde cus I have to wear it up for work and it needs to be presentable (not grown out). I also asked for a lighter tone of blonde. Alphi said he didn't want to damage my hair by adding more bleach so I told him "of course, just do what you need to keep it healthy, just blend the top" but then he applied more bleach on my already bleached hair and I was so nervous the entire apt but based on photos of his work I trusted the process. Arrived w very long hair and barely any fly aways/breakage towards the roots (minus some frizz towards the ends ofc) and left w 3+ inches taken off and tons of damage all over. the roots are so splotchy which is the one thing I mainly cared about. $570 later and so upset. I wish I never got my hair done. When I left the salon it looked decent, but it's actually a wreck and looks so cheap. I can't even style it cus it's so damaged. read more

I went to see Alphi based on the before and after pictures with their previous customers.But a total scam! My experience was terrible. I was seated and waited with a bunch of foils on my hair while he took care of two other customers, like my business was not important.He mixed bleach and foil then after two hours and 40mins washed my hair and left me seated while he was working on someone else. Then, from nowhere, he grabbed a toner and made the mix, applied it, and left me again for another 40 minutes. I was there from 2:30pm until 7pm. Then drying and oil for another 30 minutes. All that for $375 plus my parking $18. ** I didn't get a tip out,root melt(he said it's extra charge), and other places are included,bonding treatment. ONLY bleach and a half of toner from his backpack. I went for a balayage, but I got stripes. read more

I got my hair done for the first time at Jlavish by Alphi. 5/5 would recommend. I did a full highlight, trim and blowout. The price was pretty good too. For starters, I am not a person who loves salons because I can be nervous letting someone change my hair and tired during the process. I've only had my hair done a few times over the years because of this. Alphi made the process as painless as possible taking great care and attention during the whole process. He explained everything and made sure I left with the style I liked and a color that looked good. I went for a full highlight, trim and blowout. I had a 7+ month grow out and he was able to match it brillianly and get a more icy tone for winter that I requested. The salon itself was small and intimate with 6ish hair chairs, of which only 2-3 were in use at the time. In DC our mask mandate has been lifted so people were not required to be masked during services which was fine and comfortable to me as I am vaccinated and only a few people were there. Half the salon is for nails as well. It was easy to make an appointment online and they had Sunday appointments which is what I needed and hard to find in the area. Parking in Dupont Circle is not easy but very metro accessible or come early to find parking. read more

I found this place back in April through yelp when I was looking for decently priced haircuts that included wash/some type of styling. Alfie did amazing with my hair! I want to say that before this, I've only been two two stylists my entire life. One that completely ruined my hair and one that had to fix it. I've been going to that second person for six years because I didn't trust anyone to touch my hair after that. But that was when I was in LA. I moved to DC recently and I did a ton of research before choosing a salon that I wanted to go to. I saw that Alfi was a blonde specialist and I loved his work that I saw online. When I got there, he greeted me with the warmest hello and did wonders on my hair! Not only was he great to chat with, he did an AMAZING job on my hair! It had been about 6 months since I got a deep brown gloss and 10 months since I last colored it. Just take a look at the before and afters. I just emerged from J Lavish after under hour in Alphi's chair a new woman. He was on time, and very professional. He had his work cut out for him too -- I came in with a way overgrown lob and he reversed the layers for a much needed more youthful springy cut. This is a super delayed review, however, I think I should still write it as a warning for future goers. It was mid pandemic and I walked in to get my hair bleached out of pure boredom. She was the only one there and willing to do it! It took probably 5 hours, which I understand it's a lot of work to bleach a whole head. That's besides the point. She unfortunately left the bleach on the back of my head a bit too long and it fell out. Luckily I'm very relaxed about my hair but this was definitely not the best experience and wouldn't want it to happen to someone else, who would probably react much worse than me if they care a lot about their hair. I eventually had to cut most of it off to get out all the bleach residue that was sticky and literally would not get out (hence the awful blonde bob) read more

had an appointment with jessie for highlights . she was not busy when i arrived but she disappeared into the back and pawned me off on some other woman in the salon. i made the appointment with her since she had done highlights for me pre pandemic. I took the exact color blonde I wanted. What i got was not anywhere close to what I wanted. the color is a mess and not remotely acceptable she charged me $275 for a much less than satisfactory color and toner. I said I did not want a toner since it usually makes the color darker. She insisted that i needed it. during the time I was there, she showed up to check a few foils and mix the toner -- that I did not want. before I left, I told her the color was not blonde. she said it would get blonder after it dried. I showed the results of the full highlights to a few of my friends, they agreed the color was not blonde. It is more tan. I called the next day and asked her to redo it with some blonder highlights in the front and on the sides - perhaps 12-15 foils. She said NO. I needed another round of full hghlights later to get the color and results I wanted Perhaps ANOTHER $275 before the tip and parking ??? I will never go back there for a number of reasons. First, I have never made an appointment with a SPECIFIC colorist and been pushed off on someone else in the salon. I don't like toners but she insisted. I was also charged more than originally quoted. Finally, she absolutely refused to do anything to fix the color and make the customer more satisfied rather than leaving totally unhappy with expensive, poor results. I assume she would have pushed me off on someone else to fix this mess so it would not have impacted her busy schedule. By the way, she did not have another client the entire time I was there--- more than 3 1/2 hours. read more

Service overall is not ideal for the price. Jessie is quick and I'll give her that. However, I went to her for 2 years for highlights, lowlights & haircuts and she never once remembered me. She tried talking me out of wanting to do lowlights and getting closer to my natural hair color instead of the bright blonde it had been for years. Then the next time I went, she told me that she "doesn't do lowlights" although she had done them for me the previous time. So we did all highlights that time which was not what I wanted. The final time I went to her I told her she had done lowlights for me in the past and yes I was sure I didn't want to be bright blonde and yes I was sure I wanted more natural looking lower maintenance hair. She fought me on this every time--which...it's not her hair! As the paying customer I understand Jessie giving guidance but trying to talk me out of a subtle change to get my hair more natural?? The final straw. The highlights were so stripe-y and not well done. She is inconsistent and not very friendly. Additionally, my friend went to her and instead of going dark blonde/brunette, Jessie died her hair auburn. I stopped going to J Lavish and started going to The Last Tangle instead. Don't waste your time and money unless you want to fight Jessie on your hair color every time. read more

J. Lavish is a terrific hair and nail salon in Dupont Circle. It's clean, modern and the staff are all very nice and very engaging. I'm a mani-pedi client and have been coming to the salon for a year - basically since it opened. Amy is my favorite nail tech at this and every other salon I've used. She's fun, super chill and a real wizard when it comes to nails. The incredible art on her own nails are testaments to (and great advertisements for) her abilities. I always go for the deluxe treatment, thinking that if I'm investing time and a little money in pampering, the marginal cost is worth it. Virus protection protocols are followed assiduously at the salon and you are not crammed in with other clients as is so often the case at other salons which resemble germ factories.
