I am pretty picky about my curly hair since I have had some bad experiences. Before my first cut, Robert (the stylist) did a formal consultation. He asked me questions like what I enjoy about my hair, how much time I spend on my hair, what kinds of products I use and how often I get haircuts. Robert was very interested in wanting to know what I wanted and respected that I wanted to keep my hair on the longer side. If you don't have time to get in for a haircut every couple of months, the cut grows out very nicely. I like that he talks with his clients for a few minutes before every cut. It definitely sets the tone for the experience and gave me confidence that he understood what I wanted. I highly recommend Robert. He is so precise, detail-oriented and meticulous. He never rushes through your haircut and will make sure it is perfect before he finishes. It is always great to watch someone respect and enjoy their craft so much. read more

I can't express how much I enjoyed my time here. As someone with very curly hair (3b/3c), I read some of the reviews and decided to book an appointment. The receptionist was sweet and accommodating, and immediately made me feel welcome upon entering. I scheduled a wash and blowout with a trim with Jonathan. He is, without a doubt, the sweetest and funniest hairstylist I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. I have been going to Violet for several years and this review is way overdue. I come to Mesut he is the best colorist and hair stylist. I say this because he rescued me from a terrible haircut after that I am a true believer. The location is in Georgetown that justifies the price but I must say every penny is well worth spent. I live in Delray but make the trip out here every time despite the traffic and congestion of DC. I will never go anywhere else for hair. Kari is awesome, and Eyebrows are her thing! Firstly she knows exactly what she's doing so no need to worry about closing your eyes and waiting for the end result, you will always look phenomenal after she shapes your brows. Secondly she listens...which is super important to me. I knew my shape needed help, but I was also working on thickening my brows- and she got it. I left with gorgeous brows that look fuller than when I walked in- yes they look fuller- not sure how she did that: a little wax, a little trimming, a little plucking and the shape just came together very nicely. I'm really happy and excited about working with her slowly to grow them back to fullness! I'd pay any amount for someone this skilled to work on my face. It's my face after all. read more

Can't give 5 stars...yet... as I've only been once but the place isn't too big in space where you are forgotten about while under a dryer. Everyone was friendly and the team from ILO (about six members) who recently joined have added great energy and talent. Marcella (apparently past winner of best stylist via 'Washingtonian') was fantastic and I don't want to wash my hair because I love how she cut and styled it! I was one of the last clients in the salon and no one rushed me out on a Friday evening... not only great customer service but also learned how the team is supporting the greater DC/MD/VA community through different charity and social care movements. Incredible salon. I've been seeing My for over a decade for an eyebrow wax. She always performs consistent work and never over waxes or overplucks. She is careful to take my age and face shape into consideration. She mostly plucks because it is more accurate instead of over waxing. The owner of the salon is very dedicated and friendly. Violet Salon is absolutely, hands down the best place I have ever been for highlights, blow outs and cuts. I've been going to Violet for a few years now, and only found it by happenstance... the salon I had been going to previously closed suddenly and Violet was next door. Mesut, who is one of the owners, is a Turkish master. I've never seen anyone take so much care and pride in making others look beautiful. You can tell by the way he looks at each of his clients, that he brings an art form to everyone that sits in his styling chair. And I'm not kidding. I see it every time I'm there, male, female, child, adult... everyone looks amazing when they leave Mesut. Not only is he amazing, everyone in the salon is wonderful and accommodating. You will sip on the most amazing Turkish latte you've ever tasted while in Violet, and everyone is treated like family when they walk in the door. It's worth every dollar, and I wish I had a dollar for every person who has complimented me on my highlights since I started going to Violet. This review is for Kari- I have been at the salon many times, but only to have my brows done by Kari. I love Kari, she is absolutely amazing. I've had my eyebrows done by many-high end/low end and in between and none compare to Karis. I am not sure what sets her apart, but I beleive it has to do a lot with her "tint". It is so unique and long lasting that I cant believe she is actually selling a kit for you to do your own at home in between waxing. I visited Jimmy for the first time at Violet Salon and enjoyed the experience. Jimmy, the owner, is an absolute pro with both cuts and color and he did a wonderful job with both. I also got my eyebrows waxed (I can't remember the woman's name) and she shaped them expertly and was very careful with my sensitive skin. I had barely any redness after. Why am I giving this a 3? Basically bc of value for what I paid. For almost $400 for highlights and a hair cut and brow wax (including tip), I expect better ambiance and decor, and bit more white glove service. I was offered water halfway through my visit but for that kind of money, I should be getting a glass of bubbly and a shoulder massage. The interior of the salon looks like your every day ho-hum barber shop, and while my cut and color were gorgeous, they weren't exactly what I asked for. I should have spoken up, but after sitting in a chair for a few hours, I didn't exactly feel like sitting there while he made changes. All in all, this was a clean, comfortable and cute salon with solid services, but in my opinion, overpriced. Seems like I paid the Georgetown rent in addition to paying for my services. read more

CURLY GIRLS READ THIS! This review is for Stacy, who I go to for amazing haircuts, but my last visit I went for a Keratin Express Treatment. I have super curly, thick hair that is probably consired unruly to most stylists. I use to get relaxers, but I got tired of how dry and gross felt after. Then, one random day, I decided to get the Kertain Express Treatment. Uh, AMAZING. I can't even yelp how great of a decision that was because: 1. My hair is 80% smoother, less curly (but still kinda curly) 2. It never frizzes, even while I blowdry my hair with the windows open 3. It looks professionally blown out every time I do it myself. 4. I've seen NO damage at all! In fact, it improves my hair! Worth every penny. Stacy is amazingly precise, so every single strand was just like the other, no patchy work. I am new to the area and after reading these Yelp reviews made an appointment with Jimmy for highlights and a cut. He mentioned that as I was new to the area, I should have the "Georgetown blonde" look versus the highlights color I currently had. He said it would be softer. Who doesn't want softer? So, I agreed. The "Georgetown blonde" highlights he added were an ash blonde giving me a more grey cast which is not what I was looking for (nor do I think are most people!). However, I thought it might change for the better with washing and some sun. Not a bit. The cut however was the most difficult challenge. I asked Jimmy just to trim the ends as I was letting my hair grow. He took the first cut and about 3" fell to the floor. I asked him what he was doing and he replied that it was "his reputation" and he could not let me leave with my hair as long as I wanted it. There was nothing to do at that point, but cut my hair all over 3" or so shorter. Jimmy mentioned several times that he was a famous hair stylist in D.C. I hired Kari Ellen, the makeup artist at Violet Salon, to do my makeup at my wedding on June 1, 2013. She was terrific. I absolutely made the right call hiring her and will definitely use her again for other events. She came out to my wedding location a couple hours outside of the city. She was on time, and fun to work with. She did my makeup, my mom's and my mother in law's. Everyone looked terrific. She takes her job seriously and is a great makeup artist. She totally understood my vision for what I was going for and despite the 90 degree heat the day of my wedding, my makeup stayed on the whole time and didn't even smudge! My photos look amazing in large part because of the outstanding job she did. Although she's expensive, you're getting a top rated makeup artist, who is reliable, and will make you look incredible! I've already recommended her to a friend of mine getting married in DC in November. There are so many tough decisions to make as a bride, but hiring Kari Ellen is a no brainer -- go for it! read more

RUDY RODRIGUEZ! He is my hair stylist idol and hero at Violet! I've been having Rudy hi-lite, cut, and style my hair for the last four years. I had moved to DC from Chicago and had a very difficult time finding a stylist that could truly hi-lite my shoulder length fine hair without it looking brassy and/or like I had to return back weeks later unhappy. I finally found Rudy (he was formerly two doors down which recently closed) at Erwin Gomez. Rudy is just amazing with hair with such a happy soul! Rudy is 100% "hands on" and always pays attention to his clients from start to finish of your experience. He always checks on me repeatedly when my hi-lites are processing and ensures my hair is being washed/conditioned with the specific product to your hair type...he always glazes my hair himself and takes the time and attention to detail to look at the new color and make sure he is happy with it. He always makes sure you walk out looking and feeling fabulous! Rudy is such an amazing stylist that is truly an expert with color!
