Had a great experience getting my hair done here after my previous salon experience left me with lifeless hair! This salon is located on H Street and is very small so it's a little easy to miss. The vibe on the inside is very bohemian chic and everyone working there is super friendly. I can't remember the name of the woman who did my root touch up, but she did an awesome job and my color still looks great even though it was nearly a month ago that I came in! Liana did my haircut and she made my hair feel super light, soft and beautiful. I've already scheduled my follow-up appointment and can't wait to come back. read more

DO NOT go to this salon unless you want to spend hours there only to walk out looking exactly the same, if not worse than when you entered, and be told by the highly unprofessional manager that "it was not our fault; it was probably your hormones." Booked a partial highlight. After over two hours and the worst blowout I've ever had, I realized the color didn't take. I let the stylist know & she could obviously see that my roots were still showing. She immediately went into the back & came out only to tell me, "You obviously will NOT be charged for today & I'm happy to redo the color when you have time." Went to the front, booked time to try the color again & specifically asked if I was going to be charged the $250. I was told "no" & walked out of the salon. 45 minutes later, I received a call from the salon informing me that "we have charged your card on file $250 because the manager told us we had to." I told them this was NOT acceptable to me. The manager got on the phone with me & proceeded to tell me, "It was probably your hormones because we mixed the solution exactly as it was listed on your profile, and this is not our fault." She then rudely asked me if I was pregnant or had hormone issues, neither of which is her business. I then let her know that I was reporting this unauthorized charge to my bank & the BBB. She then outright said, "Good luck with that," as if to challenge me. So, if you like wasting 2 plus hours of your life, only to look worse than before, be told you won't be charged, only to be charged without your consent by a manager who then makes their incompetent service your fault due to your "hormones," then this is the perfect salon for you. Had been dying my hair bright cherry/fashion red for two years and was over it. Came in for a color consult and they said I needed a double process bleach out--which I was SUPER nervous about because my hair lifts really easily, would have preferred to start with a bleach bath but was told it wouldn't be enough (several hairstylists I've spoken to since have clarified that's where they'd have started), but I was super adamant that I absolutely did not want to be brown, and therefore was willing to accept any damage in my hair to get what I wanted (a vivid copper/ginger). I was quoted $700 for the full appointment. Came in and on the day of my appointment, after the first bleach, they were able to lift me to a super light platinum blonde--the perfect canvas--but I could tell my hair integrity was pretty compromised after so I asked if we had to go in with bleach a second time because there was less than a quarter inch of regrowth at the time that didn't bother me and would just prefer to gloss over if possible without doing more bleach damage. Stylist said sure. So tell me why I walk out with the one color I was trying to avoid--the one color I was willing to put my hair through a full bleach out to avoid?? Brown. I've included inspo pictures, the color they lifted me to? I was devastated. I tried to give myself time to sit with it, wondering if I was just seeing things but called shortly after to express my disappointment and said I'd receive a call the next day. No call back. Instead, I had to reach back out. I then received an email that said there's nothing they can do and that instead I can shampoo it a few times and they can try to gloss it. What?? My hair is too dark at this point? Gloss doesn't lift color, and I didn't get what I paid for. I expressed my disappointment and eventually the owner called me and tried to gaslight me that it was my fault that my hair wasn't brighter because I didn't let the stylist do a second round of bleach I'm sorry--WHAT? Any stylists out there want to look at the color they lifted me to and tell me that same thing? Make it make sense. Still not sure if the owner and I were disconnected, or if she hung up on me, but I called back later to get in touch. Then I wrote an email. Gave them a whole month to respond and avoid embarrassing themselves with this review and here we are. Oh--to top it off--I was still charged for a double process bleach even though we only did a single process. Horrible customer service, horrible hair expertise, wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. read more

I had been coming here for many months to do my roots without issue. I've always told the colorists that I like my natural hair and don't like to do anything to my hair that requires high maintenance since I'm very busy. After the root coloring turned my overall hair appearance much darker than my natural hair color over time, I asked for a low maintenance coloring style that could bring my hair back closer to its natural color, and for which I would need to do no up keep except keep coloring my roots. The colorist did a set of highlights on my hair that turned random strands of hair throughout my entire head ORANGE and completely damaged my hair. After I complained I had to return to get a gloss/toner. That did not solve the issue and my hair was back to orange immediately, so I had to contact the salon yet again and asked for a solution. For the first time, the colorist (a different one) told me the orange appearance will continue to come back unless I keep doing glossing or do an expensive full head single color appointment, which I was shocked to hear as that was exactly what I asked NOT to happen to my hair (and my time). They also said I should pay for a haircut. I asked the salon for an appointment for the full single color so someone could provide a more permanent solution to the issue. The salon refused to make that a complimentary visit. They also sent me a one-liner email saying I shouldn't come back. I don't typically write reviews and I am not pleased to write this as to a place that had otherwise been my regular salon for a basic root touch up. But there was serious miscommunication at every turn, rudeness by the owner for no good reason, and an unwillingness to actually pay to fix the situation for a loyal customer whose hair they destroyed on a permanent basis. I never leave bad reviews but I just want to share my experience in case anyone is considering this salon - My hair: I have naturally dirty blonde hair but have box dyed it myself for a few years now and really loved the bright blonde I was able to achieve from that - but I decided to go a smidge darker (bronde is what I was told is the name for what I wanted) before a big birthday / moving out of the country - I did not want a drastic change but just something light and subtle, I found lots of reference photos so that I could be sure to have something to show wherever I went in The experience: I was already nervous about going back to Aurora because last time I got a simple haircut I remember it being ridiculously expensive, but they were the only ones with last minute availability and so I figured I'd try it out - I worked with Lilly, who was super nice throughout the process - but ultimately did not give me anything close to what was requested After an incredibly brief conversation (very few questions were asked of me) about what I wanted - again, I was very specific about how light I wanted to remain - she begun to tone my hair. As she was toning it, she asked some questions about how recently I had last dyed my hair, and upon hearing my answer remarked that she "should've asked me that before.." because the toner was 'taking to my hair' more than she expected (?) At this point I was already pretty scared but figured I'd trust the process. She did show me a picture of what shade brown she could go to from where we were at, but 1) the photo was ombré, and I was unclear which exact shade I'd be given even after trying to clarify my expectations 2) she did not give me ANY other options at that point and 3) she also made it clear more than once that I didn't *have* to go dark brown, we were still talking light brown - Maybe not as 'bronde' but still light brown. She applied the dye in a way that felt somewhat sloppy, and then I got it washed out and blow dried, leaving remarkably unsatisfied and mostly just sad. What I was given is simply NOT even close to what I asked for. If what I wanted was unachievable, I wish I was told that and turned away - NOT given a terrible, dark brown instead. I strongly strongly dislike my hair and I have to put up with it now because I have no idea how to reverse what was done or lighten it myself. I wish I asked for a refund. Sorry to say but please think twice before booking here! :( read more

I got my hair done here about 2-3 weeks ago. I asked Lily for a lived in, old money brown, but as soon as she finished I just KNEW that it would wash out to be a gross red-yellow-orange. I literally told her that I was cool toned and that it wouldn't look good on me, but she just dismissed me and said I was wearing gold jewelry? Like I don't know my own skin tone? It was also such an impersonable experience. When I first sad down, she IMMEDIATELY tried to sell me a $90 conditioner. She had 3-4 clients in the time that I was there. Here's the real kicker - she originally glazed my hair wrong, so she had to reglaze it (okay whatever, I'm glad you're fixing it), but after the reglaze she said that I could either wait 30 minutes for someone to blow dry my hair or I could do it myself. I literally almost started sobbing in the salon, I felt so humiliated and embarrassed. After like 10 minutes, my (so so lovely and kind) hair washer came to help me, I think because my eyes were watering. The worst of all? I paid $350 AND THEY DIDN'T EVEN CUT MY HAIR!!! Who does that?! I go to a lot of bougie salons because I love my hair and for me it's like self care. I don't mind the price tag, but I have NEVER paid that much or even gotten my hair dyed without it also including a cut. I'm for sure not going back, and I would encourage you to look elsewhere as well. I wouldn't wish this experience on my worst enemy. read more

I was seeing a stylist at Aurora for a few years and followed her when she left. She's currently on maternity leave so I thought I'd give Aurora another chance and try a different stylist. I went back and forth via email with their receptionist and received a CONFIRMATION that my appointment was booked but that they needed a credit card. It completely slipped my mind to call them and give a credit card number. I never received a follow-up email or a call for the card. I showed up at the time my appointment was and they'd given it to someone else. I'm 8 months pregnant and live an hour away and just drove to an appointment I apparently didn't have. In the 20+ years I've been dying my hair I've never had a salon not follow-up or not hold your appointment because they're missing a credit card. This salon has had a ton of stylist turnover and I'm starting to understand why. Not a great way to run a business. read more

I still am trying to wrap my brain around this and why I don't go with gut. It's so uneven. No precision line for the fringe. It just didn't feel right but I couldn't see the top. There were a lot of things that felt wrong from the beginning. I should have left. Now I'm getting it fixed again this week! I just don't get it. I don't understand how people like this can be licensed with scissors in their hand. The person who cut my hair was Chloe, I even had the sad audacity to tip her. By the way I arrived. She greeted me sadly. Moped around to the chair. I asked where I could sit me bag she suggested the dirty window sill. Never was offered a drink. Mentioned they have tap water when I was asked as I was closing out. Showed her videos and photos of examples and she sorta just looked over them as if it was a waste of her time. Went in for a trim to walk out with my hair ruined. Do not go to Leigh. She cut it so badly that my i lost all volume in my hair. My once long wavy hair is now 8 inches shorter, 1/5 the volume, and poofy with no waves anymore. It feels 1/5 of the amount of hair when I hold it all together to put it in a ponytail for example. I had to cut off a few more inches to at least fix the bottom. I have ends up to my scalp (she shortened all the way to the top to remove volume). I have to loop my ponytail holder and extra loop to get it to stay up because my hair is so much thinner now. It is stringy and choppy/scraggly on the ends. I could not tell how awful the actual cut was when I walked out because she had attempted to diffuse it, and failed miserably, which she even acknowledged. I didn't mind this because I could go home and wash it. I washed it and could feel how much hair had been thinned out / lost. Pictures are attached for reference after me doing the same routine to my hair. It is wavy normally, but she cut off all the parts that wave, so now I just have ends from the top of my head to the bottom. She turned my hair into a scrappy mess. I had dead ends going in and needed a cut, but did not imagine it would somehow look much more dead and damaged and unhealthy after the cut. I must have done Leigh wrong in a past life because I struggle to believe anyone is this awful at what they do. The salon refused to refund me any of the $145 I paid to have my hair ruined. Terrible service and terribly managed business. Very upsetting given that this will take a minimum of 10 years to recover from because the only way to come close to fixing it is cutting off all the weird sections (at least six more inches). I could never have imagined it was possible to thin out a head of hair this much. read more

I gave 3 stars because their customer service was great, and they were very nice. But as far as the service I paid for, I had a horrible experience. I asked prior to my appointment if they had any stylists who can work with my type of hair (black, natural hair) and they told me yes so I gave them a try. I was very disappointed. The person who did my hair was very nice and accommodating, asked if I had a picture of the style I wanted so I showed them two pics (one was for the layers I wanted and the other was the style I wanted) and they agreed. So when it came time to wash my hair, I was very frustrated because they barely washed my hair, no scrubbing just kind of moving it around with their fingertips. It was almost if they were scared to touch it. But I figured I'd give them a chance. I have natural 4a hair, and it's very easy to manage for other hairstylist. They really struggled with it trying to figure out what to do. The really didn't know how to straighten, flat iron, curl or style my hair. I left upset and very disappointed. I think they do an amazing job on other textures of hair, just not black hair unfortunately. Out of $95 bucks and felt pretty frustrated. read more

Jen and Liana, the owners of Aurora Salon have been cutting and coloring my hair for over 12 years. I was ecstatic for them when they opened Aurora in the summer of 2020. I am very particular about my hair. My hair texture is coarse and thick and I've been fighting the grey hair growth since I was in my late twenties. Even though I've been a client of Jen and Liana's for some time they always ask and listen to my hair needs at the start of every appointment. This is very important as many stylists have a tendency to feel that they know best and not listen to there clients input or needs. Jens coloring skills are unmatched. As I mentioned I have super thick hair and unruly grays which require maintenance every 5 to 7 weeks. Jen is very thorough and creates a bright blonde look for me. Even over time, the color never appears to become brassy. Jen is a hair magician. My hair never feels dry or over processed. Liana always gives me the haircut that I ask for. She is excellent with taking the weight from my hair and giving me my current look of a blunt bob. Although we have had several haircuts through the years including a beautiful pixie cut. I will tell you that during the height of the pandemic in 2020 I didn't have my hair cut for 6 months. But you would never be able to tell because Liana's work lasts. She also gives me an amazing blow out and creates a super smooth, straight look for me. The COVID cleaning precautions at the salon are very thorough. There is continuous cleaning, temperature checks, social distancing and they even hand you a disinfecting wipe for your phone when you enter the salon. I pay attention since I work in a hospital. I feel very comfortable during my appointment. The overall experience at Aurora is amazing. It is a high end experience, in a beautiful space with a very professional staff. read more

Someone else out the toner in and then I had a different stylist cut my hair and I was never asked if this was ok. My cut was good but the toner didn't take. I have been seeing Liana Phillips as my hair stylist and Jen Phillips for years. Always great, consistent and satisfying results. I have followed the sisters from their 2 previous salons and beyond happy they opened up their own salon. That means they pick everything from the great products to the other wonderful stylists at the salon. They know the ins and out of the DC salon world, so they know the best. After years of going to Jen while she worked at Immortal Beloved, I followed her to her new Salon, Aurora, when she and her sister Liana opened it after COVID-19 even though their new location was a even farther away from my home. I always thought Jen was a great colorist and her sister Liana did a wonderful job cutting my hair. However, my opinion of them has changed. Most recently when I called after my last appointment to ask if when I came the next time for a hair cut with Liana, Jenn could add a few more low lights and tweak the tone a bit, the receptionist put me on hold. When she returned she told me that Jen was not willing to see me as a client anymore. For a $325 process and COVID fee it would seem that if a customer needed a correction/tweak, that the colorist, in this case, the owner, would be more than accommodating. No matter how particular a customer may be about their hair, for this outrageous price, this is beyond the pale. Jen didn't even get on the phone and talk to me, but instead had the receptionist "fire" me as a client. I am frankly stunned by this lack of professionalism. I would highly discourage anyone looking for a hair salon to waste their money on a business that doesn't value its customers. read more

I came to Aurora following my colorist Kelly Dee from another salon that closed due to COVID. As far as the salon and staff, the space is beautiful, tranquil and not pretentious. They are following all COVID precautions and sanitary measures and it makes me feel safe and relaxed. The staff is great, super nice, and professional! They also use top of the line products as well. As always Kelly Dee, left my color beautiful and refreshed! It was a quick drive in from Arlington, and easy to find parking in the neighborhood. read more

I booked a haircut and blowout and Liana did a fantastic job on my very thick and extremely curly hair. The salon is so gorgeous and very clean. I felt safe with regards to their Covid procedures. Loving Aurora Salon. Jen's been coloring my hair for close to 10 years. I originally went to her for color correction; a bad ombré. Jen fixed it with no drama and has been keeping my hair beautiful ever since. When I make a color suggestion, she listens to what I'm looking for and makes it happen. I started seeing her sister Liana for a cut at the new salon and am very happy with her care and attention. Cut is looking great. With the crazy climate that we are in, I have felt extremely safe and comfortable at this salon. I feel like the measures the owners are taking are all the right things- including hand washing, temperature taking, masks, social distancing with clients and staff, and strict cleaning measures. Overall I would say this place is just fine. Went in for a color and a trim. Showed the girl multiple pictures of the red color I was going for. I guess my hair looks fine but it's brown, not red. On top of that, I asked to get my hair trimmed, not even an inch off - just the split ends, and they charged me $85. Again, it was fine but would not recommend. read more

I have natural curly hair and before Jen it was tough to get/keep good color. In addition to being the best at color, Jen is an awesome person and truly cares. It shows in everything - how she listens to each and every client, the color results, and the meticulous planning that her and her sister put into every detail of their salon. The salon is beautiful and has a great, comfortable feel. Everyone there is so nice. During COVID they have taken every possible precaution and she has also been sensitive to those clients like myself that were more nervous about venturing out.
