Such a unique place with quirks in every corner. I visited for brunch and would like to visit for dinner. I started off with a bloody Mary but it was to spicy for my liking so our waiter was so pleasant that he got me another drink. I went for the salted caramel bourbon ice coffee drink. It went down quickly. I ordered the crab cake with poached egg it was delicious. My friend had ordered the poached eggs with bacon on toasted baguette with the home fries. I tried her home fries and they were perfectly seasoned and crunchy. She went for the pineapple mimosa and she enjoyed it as she ordered another. I will say making reservations is recommended as we did because as we walked out there was a line. read more

We drove 1.5 hrs from CT to visit Cav. I had asked for a round table months ago but they could not accommodate the day of. While our waiter was great, there was much to be desired on the food side and atmosphere. Our lobster bisque and coffee were lukewarm. You have to order lobster to put on your lobster bisque for an additional $5. The Caesar salad was dry and the crouton sticks were very hard. All of that aside, there was one bathroom for the entire restaurant as their was an event in the large rooms and the bathrooms there were not accessible. I spent 15 minutes in line (2 trips)! Unbelievable. I missed part of my parties celebration waiting on line. I left feeling ripped off after spending almost $300. Will not return! read more

I simply want to love this place so much... But I just can't. It promises more than it can deliver, aside from the unique and eclectic décor inside. I started coming to CAV for lunches with my mom, many years ago... We were less impressed each time for the price of the meals so stopped coming. Prior to this week, I last dined at CAV a few years ago on a date and told myself that was it, it just wasn't worth trying again. Myself, my boyfriend, and another couple decided to enjoy a double-date there a couple of days ago. The décor is unchanged and still a feast for the eyes (though, honestly, I do worry about the level of dust that must collect on all of the...things...that are...everywhere...) and, another thing that didn't seem much changed was the menu. It features many of the same apps/dishes that my mom and I tried 10-15 years ago...and I'm not sure why. To start, our server seemed rushed and he didn't tell us about any of the specials (which we learned later - and would have considered trying!). He wasn't very present, spoke too fast (we had to ask him to repeat himself a few times because we simply couldn't catch what he was saying), and we didn't see him too much over the course of our meal. He even brought us our check - twice. The service just seemed a little disorganized...not 5 star, which it should be for the prices on the menu. Our table started with a couple of apps... the calamari and the bruschetta. Both were tasty! My boyfriend wanted an IPA to drink but was told that all the taps were broken. We received the tiniest little bread basket to the table with not-awesome little bread pieces... For the type of place this claims to be (and the prices they're asking) - it shouldn't be difficult to give some quality, warmed, artisan-style little breads at the table... I think it looks better to give no complimentary bread, than to give complimentary bread that's super underwhelming. We ordered our entrees... I ordered the Duck Confit: It comes with both breast and leg... the breast tasted off, gamier that I'm used to, and the fat cap wasn't rendered very nicely so it had a rubbery layer of fat all along the outside of it. The leg was grisly and not a very enjoyable texture. It came with ultra-smooth whipped sweet potatoes that, on their own, would be pretty darn great, but with the sweet glaze on the duck and the sweet sauce on the plate...it was just all too sweet. I would have loved to have seen something more savory to balance it out, because there wasn't enough of the cranberry-orange compote to pull that off. My boyfriend ordered the scallops and shrimp: He enjoyed the scallops (I tried a bite as well), they were perfectly cooked, I believe the dish came with 4 of them... However, the flavor of the lemon zest risotto was a little off-putting. His dish also came with 2 shrimp which were very small. Again, for the price of the dish ($38), we expected just a little more. If you're only going to give 2 shrimp, shouldn't they at least be larger ones...? The couple we were with ordered the mushroom risotto and the filet mignon...they both seemed to enjoy theirs, so that was great. :-) We ordered crème brulee for desert... it was a lovely texture and taste. Both gentlemen at the table ordered a drink with dessert - the same one - it was a bourbon coffee drink? I can't find it on their website menu to note it's name more specifically, but they enjoyed it. Overall, for the prices on the menu (which aren't cheap - and for quite small portions), we just expect a little more/better all around with regard to both food and service. read more

The omelette was delicious. The environment, both indoors and outside where we sat, was really nice, and the service was good. The french toast was, I'd have to say, a bit lacking, and served in a bath of pancake syrup (billed as maple syrup on the menu). Better to put that on the side and not mention it. read more

CAV was a pretty cool experience and would make a great spot for a date. Came as a party of five, without Scott Wolf. 3 of us had cocktails: 2 martinis and a beer. Martinis were great! We did 3 apps for the table and I would highly recommend the Brie as well as the Brussels sprouts (inventive interpretation). The bruschetta was good, but it was standard. I was dying to have the duck but they sold out sometime in between ordering drinks and placing a food order; this was unfortunate because I was not especially interested in other menu items. I ordered the "award-winning" chive dumpling dish and while it was tasty, I wouldn't order it again; that said, this was a personal preference as I simply found it too sweet of an entree and others in my party really enjoyed their meals. I would be back to try the duck as well as the scallops (which in hindsight I wish I ordered!). Atmosphere was AMAZING, there's parking across the street, and our server was very professional. No reason not to come back here, and CAV is offering a truly unique, innovative dining experience. read more

I hadn't been to CAV in about 15 years! After checking out the lunch menu online, I made a reservation. I was looking for something a little upscale where we could have a leisurely talk. I requested a private table when making the reservation and they delivered. The social distancing was a thing to behold and tastefully done, so that we wondered whether the additions of hanging glass paned doors were original or due to COVID-19. The fit the decor perfectly. The service was impeccable and the menu a thing of beauty. I can be picky, due to self-imposed dietary restrictions. But there was only one thing on the menu that I did not find wildly appealing - the burger (not a red meat fan). The choices were endless. We decided upon the Walnut Encrusted Brie with Brandied Apricots for an appetizer. It came with two kinds of crackers and was fabulous. We took half of it home, not wanting to ruin our appetites. It was richly decadent. For my meal, I chose the TexMex wrap, mildly spicy chunks of chicken, salsa, bacon, cheese, lettuce and chipotle mayo stuffed into a grilled tomato tortilla wrap. It was served with generous side salad with house dressing. I could barely finish half. My date ordered the Seared Chicken with Poached Pears and Asian chive dumplings. It came with fusion sauce (whatever that is, but it was delicious). I happily enjoyed a helping of chicken, pear and dumpling in exchange for my untouched half of wrap. It was amazing! The atmosphere is so unique - an eclectic mix of antiques and chandeliers. The service was top notch and the food to die for. Prices were reasonable, with everything well under $20. I don't plan to stay away another 15 years! read more

Food and service were good. Really enjoyed the Sophia Salad, clam chowder and scallops. The brie was good, but the crackers were not great (fig crackers or bread would be better). Also, enjoyed the cozy, inviting atmosphere. Would recommend. read more

CHARMING ROMANTIC RESTAURANT WITH A BOHO FLARE Stopped in for lunch with a group of friends. First thing that struck me...funky decor. It was a little boho-chic crossed with "Tavern On the Green" with all the chandeliers. Could hardly wait to look at the menu and it didn't disappoint. The waiter was personal and attentive. Drinks arrived quickly. The entrees soon followed. I got the Lemon Zest Risotto and it was definitely abundant in quantity and lemon flavor. Both were appreciated! Everyone else was quite pleased and it was an overall excellent experience. I would love to come back at night to experience the ambiance with evening lights on. Very charming, romantic restaurant. read more

CAV Restaurant - The very lemony risotto was awesome! - New American Near Me - Providence, Rhode Island

Haven't been here in years, the atmosphere is is still lovely and eclectic. The service was excellent but brunch order mixed up and mine was a disappointment. I ordered the mushroom and spinach omelette which was filled with canned mushrooms and frozen spinach. Served with nine pieces of roasted potatoes and stove grilled bread. I took it home and added some flavor to it. My husband ordered the French toast which was very good but needed fruit to break the sweetness of the dish. The highlight of the brunch was the Creme Brûlée, not as firm as it supposed to be but very good. Not sure I would return for a meal but the bar is very pretty for a drink. read more

I went here for restaurant week with my boyfriend and all I can say is it was a little underwelming. The service was quick when it came to the food coming out but the server didn't seem to want to serve us. He didn't even come and offer drink refills. The food was alright. The appetizers were good, very small portions but tasted alright. I like the goat cheese more, the cauliflower lacked the crunch I was expecting but the flavors was good. The entree was delicious. I got the crusted fish in the crab broth and it all just went together phenomenally. He got the duck confit and it looked good but it was kind of dry. As for the dessert, I just didn't like it, I wish there were other options because I ended up wasting it completely. All in all, it was extremely disappointing due to the high expectations that I had. read more

The food was good. The host was not friendly or welcoming. We were here for brunch for my parents birthdays and we overheard him asking a fellow server if we were ever going to leave. The ambience is great. I really like the decor and the vibe. The service was excellent. I had the lobster bisque followed by the carmelized, seared scallops. The bisque was good but way too sweet for my taste. I'm usually a big fan of lobster bisque but probably wouldn't order this one again. I was disappointed with the risotto. This is also something I usually enjoy but found it to be quite bland but, as a diabetic who usually avoids starch, that was probably a good thing. The scallops, OTOH, were perfection. Since they were the focal point of the entree, they made my first visit to CAV well worth the trip. read more

The food was amazing, Ambiance had such a cool vibe to it and the service was top notch as always!

This place is hidden in the old jewelry district, tucked away in a cute little garden square. CAV stands for cocktails, antiques and victuals. Everything you see in the restaurant is for sale! Every meal I have had here has been delicious, the most recent being the scallops dish I tried last night. It didn't knock me over with flavor but it was exactly what it promised to be. The only issue I've ever had here was attitude from a waiter, I felt ignored when I needed something and patronized when I was being waited on. I didn't understand it. Overall though I plan on going back many more times, the brunch menu still needs a through inspection read more

Came for a Friday afternoon lunch. Haven't been here in years so was a nice change. I remembered it being very eclectic with several eye catching pieces. From what I remember, everything is available for purchase - not sure if this is still the case. We started with the walnut encrusted brie with brandied apricot - served warm with crackers. This was soooo good. Then for lunch, I ordered the tex mex wrap - really nice fresh flavors and the chicken had a nice char on it. My gf had the appleturk sandwich - great flavors but I'm not a fan of rye, the flavor overwhelmed the sandwich a bit. Both were really good and came with side salads. I ordered a side of steak fries as well. Our bartender was extremely friendly with such a playful demeanor - I think his name was Nico. Def would come back for another meal. There is a lot across the street you can park - entrance into the restaurant is inside the courtyard. Also, watch your step upon entering, it's a bit of a steep walkway in, beware in heels! read more

The decor of this restaurant is very interesting - there are a lot of African statues/art around, as well as some Asian inspired stuff. We were warmly greeted at the door and seated right away. There were less than 10 seated tables at the time (6:30pm), so it wasn't too busy. We did wait a bit for water, bread and our server, but my friend said that the service tends to be on the slower side. We tried the duck sausage flat bread. It was really good. The sauce they had on it was sriracha like, but not spicy. My friends loved their tuna and filet mignon dishes respectively and my husband cleaned his plate. One of my friends ordered the NY strip like I did, but his was gristly and exchanged it for the filet mignon - which he thoroughly enjoyed. I thought my NY strip was cooked well, but it didn't have much flavor - but I guess that's why it had Bordelaise sauce. The sauce was great and I'm thankful it was there. We also ordered the fruit tart for dessert. The custard for the tart was light, but almost on the bland side. It was good, but I was so full from the appetizer and my dinner that I couldn't finish it. I don't know what exactly I was looking for, as all the food was prepared well, but I wasn't won over. My friends love it there and as long as they were happy and we didn't have any complaints, I am game to return whenever they want. read more

Surprised i haven't written a review after being here so many times. I've come here only for lunch. The decor is totally unique and different from any other restaurant in Providence. They do have some outdoor seats in the summer. For food, its mostly been good. Dishes that i've liked are the seared salmon, also the sophia salad with salmon and the salmon burger. Also their mussels arrabbiata and parmesan crusted chicken is pretty good. The risotto is not that great and I wouldn't recommend getting the quinoa salad. The combination of the quinoa with the vegetables did not taste well together. Overall, good experience, would recommend coming here for lunch. Good selection of wines and beers. Service is good. Would like to come back for brunch sometime. There is a parking lot across the street and also street parking. read more

Had the lobster bisque and the Florentine and enjoyed the food! The lobster bisque was sweeter than I expected with the vanilla being in it, but I enjoyed it. I came here on a date on a Saturday night. I booked a reservation and got seated immediately. The waiter came and we felt like he was hurrying things the entire time. There was another table sitting next to us who had a much more patient waiter who was willing to explain things- which I was jealous of as this is my first time. We ordered calamari, sesame hideki tuna entree and Parmesan chicken. The complimentary bread was nice and crispy, calamari was healthy, and the chicken was seasoned perfectly. Why the two stars? I found it weird for the tuna to have been the color it was. It looked more stale than it was fresh, so as someone who was eating raw fish, I directed this to my waiter's attention. Instead of tailoring his response to my concern, he explained that he has had it "plenty of times" and that it's the natural color. Now, I'm not expecting high quality tuna because this is not a Michelin star Japanese restaurant- however, I had a serious concern and I brought it to the waiter and he couldn't care less. The wasabi on the plate resembled marbled play-doh as well. After a while of staring at this plate, the waiter came back and asked if I was not satisfied with it. I said that I'm fine now as my boyfriend was finished eating and I didn't want to wait any longer. If he asked me during the first encounter, I would've said yes. The worst part about this is that I still got charged for this $30.95 plate that was barely touched. I ate 1/8 of the tuna, and less than a bite of the vegetables. I finished dinner by eating the rest of my boyfriends chicken dish. He wasn't too satisfied with his experience either as his second drink request never came, but glad we didn't get charged on that as well! Overall, I would only come to this restaurant for the "interior" aesthetic experience of feeling "out of Rhode Island". read more

We were sad to learn that the owner Sylvia passed away. She was definitely the heart of the restaurant; she always made guests feel like they were home. I remember conversations we had about her passion of nourishing people, their bellies and souls. An amazing woman! We returned today to enjoy some brunch. The decor continues to be part earthy, fantasy and romantic. Every nook contains a conversation piece. Just lovely. We had the Maryland crab cake and the lobster & eggs dishes. Presentation was beautiful. The dishes were made well, though a bit skimpy on the lobster. Unfortunately, they were served a bit cold. The waiter addressed this; however, by offering the beverages on the house. The experience was enjoyable. And this review is more an ode to an exceptional soul of Sylvia and the best wishes to her sons, who took over a labor of love. read more

Cav is our preferred special occasion restaurant as well as our go to place when it's time to entertain friends or family from out of town. The cocktail menu is amazing, with many innovative combinations. The pear martinis and the Cosmos are especially on point! Every single meal I have had here has been outstanding! The appetizers and the mains are well portioned and superbly executed and presented. Most recently, we visited for their Valentine's Day brunch. I had attempted to secure a reservation for Valentine's evening, but I was too much of a slacker and missed all the prime dining reservation times. If you're looking to come here for Valentine's Day, I definitely recommend booking well in advance. The restaurant was beautifully decorated with long stem roses on every table, red rose petals in the chandeliers and additional touches of red throughout. The restaurant is so unique and eclectic and features an assortment of antiques from all over the world. I especially enjoy the African masks. There's a sleigh suspended from the ceiling. There are numerous busts and small statues nestled in nooks throughout the place. There's also a bit of a French theme with some antique signs in French. The chandeliers are everywhere and are just gorgeous. The signature decor piece, IMO, is a giant circle that is lined with crystals and illuminated, suspended over the dining area. The lighting is great for photos! For brunch we enjoyed the pomegranate pear martinis. I had a delectable crab cake with a poached egg and a small piece of grilled brioche. My love had an egg and bacon dish. We also shared a strawberry, thyme and maple syrup topped waffle. Service was excellent and the whole experience was truly 5 stars. We look forward to returning! read more

Can't say CAV is worth the price. Ambience is very nice cozy, but food was underwhelming. Started with the Brussels which were flavored w peanut sauce and had tofu on it as well. Thought it was a bit bland and had too many onions on it. Had steak and lobster pasta for entree. Pasta was good but lacked a reasonable amount of lobster especially for price. Filet was $40+ and was way too chewy. Sides along with it were very yummy however. read more

We've visited twice and have left full and satisfied both times. (We would have been more, but we've called a few times and couldn't get reservations).
