I've honestly been craving a steakhouse/chop house that isn't pretentious. [[HIGHLIGHT]]A western themed steakhouse did the trick.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Plus I've heard about their Happy Hour and unlimited salad and bread. While I didn't go for Happy Hour for this edition, I went for dinner at their Saloon section. I'd recommend that section if you just want to sit down quickly since it's open seating. Jack was our server for this round. My partner and I decided to share the 2lb Sirloin steak with fries and calamari. The partner was hangry, but the salad and sourdough, which is unlimited made him satisfied, until the steak came. It was cooked medium rare and to my standards, so not too raw, but also not overcooked. For a sirloin, it was tender. I didn't need steak sauce. Just went in. Our calamari came later than our steak, and Jack was super apologetic and offered us dessert. We assured him it was ok and I joked that he made it a "surf and turf" now. We didn't finish the calamari since we really took advantage of that salad and sourdough combo. I personally wasn't a fan of the calamari though. Overall, I think the two of us loved the unlimited salad and bread that came with the steak. It definitely made us full. As athletes, we needed to fuel up after our respective sports (him-cycling, me- swimming). The salad was definitely a palette cleanser after the steak. It was reasonably priced, something my partner really liked. We ended up turning down our free dessert because we were very full and we didn't mind the error. We took home the calamari. Steak was chewy, could go so far as to call it tough; felt like trying to munch through shoe leather. I asked for medium rare and it came out PAST well done. Obviously, I politely sent it back, server was very apologetic about the matter and said they'd get a new one for me ASAP. Second steak arrived and it was somehow even more overcooked than first. Who's manning the grill back there, a Vegan? More importantly, who's running the pass to check for quality control? We came back to Cattlemens to celebrate my birthday. Cattlemens Livermore is conveniently located midpoint between our friends that moved away from SF and those of us that are still there. Everything was awesome. Since we had to wait for our entire party to arrive, there were plenty of seats at the bar. Our drinks were pendleton sours $6 (happy hour), stella $5.75, strawberry lemonade $5, Long Island iced tea $14. Once everyone arrived, we were seated a big room. It looked delicious and smelled rich & savory. I got the mushroom ravioli, it was very creamy, not too salty & tasteful. I came to Cattlemen's because my hotel had one of their ads and they were close. I wasn't in the mood for steak but I'd make do with something. At 505pm on a weekday, I was seated immediately with no wait and quickly greeted by an affable server (Molly). Throughout my stay she was attentive without being intrusive and the supporting service was efficient in the way good restaurants are. I got my drinks and breadstick right away, got my appetizer with a pause long enough to enjoy every bite and then my main...clearly they know what they're doing here. My order of Brussels sprouts were delicious; firm with some resistance and well seasoned. I ordered a Cesar salad with steak which was cooked to order...a very satisfying and filling meal. I love a restaurant that embodies their ethos! This is a steakhouse and in every way it shows. We came here on friday night after hitting the gym and arrived around 7pm. We specifically wanted to visit for the happy hour specials we've seen. It's mon-fri 4-10pm at the bar area. We honestly were pleasantly surprised at how many people were there. My bf took advantage of the $4 beer special, and I got two of the pendleton sour for $6. He originally wanted the prime rib sandwich for $10 but they were out...so we ended up with the pete's special steak. It felt a lot like prime rib. it also comes with a complimentary drink (beer). I noticed they had a pretty solid happy hour menu, so I went with a margarita and the lamb lollipops. The margarita was decent, but the lamb lollipops really stood out--very flavorful and tender. Our party arrived a bit earlier than our 7 PM reservation, but we were seated right away. We ordered three appetizers to share: mozzarella sticks, fried onions, and bacon-wrapped shrimp. Pros: Food was good, came out hot and fresh. Our waiter was so nice, but we saw he could only cater to one table at a time, multiple tables at once was clearly overwhelming for him. We saw another table waiting to be serviced by him as well. Multiple workers walked by and just eyed each table but never offered help to the poor guy, therefore a few tables grew impatient. Cons: Soon as we walked in we were told it was going to be a 20-30 minute wait, not a problem. We gave them our phone number to alert us when our table was ready, so we found an area at the bar and sat down and waited. 45 minutes passed someone from our party wanted to see how much longer it would be. When asked how much longer, the host said they "didn't have our number to contact us". (Didn't make sense because we gave it to them soon as they asked us to have a seat to wait) They didn't bother to call for us like they were calling other people waiting for a table, they didn't want to walk around to find our party either. [[HIGHLIGHT]]When they finally sat us down at a table, we noticed majority of the restaurant was empty (literally only 6-8 tables).[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Took us about 10 minutes to just get water for everyone (We were a table of 5 btw). Took over 20 minutes to take our order, took almost 30 minutes to get our order. Waited 15 minutes to get to go boxes and the tab. We came in around 7pm left around 9:45ish just to give an estimate of how long we were there for. As someone who had came here several times as they were a kid, to come as an adult for a quick visit to reminisce, it was a disappointment to say the least. I would also like to thank the staff for keeping my credit card safe after I left it behind to rush to a movie! While the service was 5/5, the food was 4/5. I ordered one of the beef & reef combos, the 8 oz. sirloin and steamed 1/2 lb. Dungeness crab. The crab was a bit dry for my liking. The steak was better, and I liked the baked potato with all the fixins. I also liked my blackberry lemonade (4/5). The bread and salad that come with the meal were fine. We've driven by Cattlemen's in Livermore for 40+ years and have never stopped in. Tonight we went with our son and his fiancé who recently went for the first time and loved it. I have no complaints, not one. We were seated right away. Our server was awesome, very attentive and super friendly. They had many items to choose from on their gluten free menu. I had a medium center cut petite fillet with no seasoning except for salt and pepper and really that's all it needed. It was delicious. The other meals that were ordered were a Steakhouse Caesar salad, the Rustler ribeye and a 10oz Filet. Everybody loved their meal although my husband said he should've got a center cut. Been going to Cattleman's since I was kid in 1968. Mama and Daddy would bring us on the way home from Tahoe. It's an old school memory for me and my family. I've been to all of them along the way. My experiences haven't always been consistent as an adult. I've given my share of feedback to managers over the years. Tonight I called the manager, Jeff, over because I wanted to give him some feedback. Often times managers hear the bad stuff but not the good experiences. I shared with him that my experience tonight was outstanding. The food was cooked perfectly. I get that not everyone can eat a 16 oz "Cattleman's Cut" prime rib, I'm not one of those. I like it "mooing" so more on the rare side. Many times though the food has been as good. This was just one of those times. What made the experience outstanding was the service. I made a reservation before getting here. Didn't need it because it was only 4:15 when I got here. The place was not as empty as the parking lot looked. That's not the case now almost 2 hours later. It's hopping. The host told me that I could go to the bar if I wanted to be seated immediately....or if I waited 5 minutes I could get a table in the main restaurant. I've done dinner there and enjoyed many Legendary margaritas in the bar when I lived in Livermore for almost 20 years. They were busy enough tonight that the one server who was on shift was running around...but another was going to be on shift soon and they would seat me so that I had a good experience. I'm glad I waited. I got Brittany. From the first interaction I could tell this was gonna be fun. It was. We shared stories about our tattoos...both of us have ink and stories behind them. Then I gave her my order. She was attentive and appropriately timely through the entire meal. I appreciate that very much. She made the experience outstanding. While I don't live in Livermore any longer, I stop at many of the restaurants I enjoy to avoid the Altamont traffic when I have to come through later in the day. Today was one of those. I'm glad I stopped. By the way I could have taken pictures of the food. That would have been too common.
