5 stars for Hap's Original Steaks & Seafood. I've been here before, but I'm finally getting around to writing a review after such a special night with my family. Last night was the first time my wife and I brought our four sons to experience what a true "fancy dinner" feels like, and Hap's absolutely delivered. First and foremost, a massive shoutout to Shelby, our waitress. She was simply incredible. She immediately recognized that our younger boys were a little wide-eyed by the whole experience, and she made the night feel warm, welcoming, and unforgettable. At one point she called our 9-year-old "sir," and his eyes practically popped out of his head. It was such a small thing, but moments like that are what make hospitality special. The food was phenomenal. The prime rib was honestly even better than I remembered -- unbelievably tender, juicy, and flavorful, especially with the au jus. We also got the peppercorn sauce, which was fantastic. The mac and cheese and scalloped potatoes were divine, and even the sautéed spinach was outstanding. My wife and I each had a couple glasses of Cabernet from Paso Robles that paired perfectly with dinner. Between the incredible food, the old-school New York steakhouse ambiance, and that timeless feeling where you walk in and genuinely don't know if it's 1950, 1980, or 2026 (in the best possible way), this already would've been a memorable night. Went back and we are so glad we did. Walked in on a Saturday and we were seated right away. We ordered drinks and had some bread. The service this time was so much better and our waitress was great she was attentive and nice. I do have to say there are way too many dinner specials after a few she mentioned you just loose track of what they have maybe it's just me. I got the beet salad with the honey balsamic and it was amazing. I would eat that everyday! I had the filet which was cooked perfectly. The Mac and cheese or liquid gold as I call it is always a go to. The asparagus are fine we always change vegetables when we go. Glad we stopped by it was busy but we were able to get a table pretty quick and the service was a lot better than our first time. Had an amazing experience at this gem. My love surprised me by taking me to this spot on my birthday. I love a good steakhouse and he had been here about 20 years ago. Since it is still open this tells me the place must be a popular gem. I loved the fact that when we got there we got front row parking to the entrance right in downtown. When entering we were greeted right away. He had reservations and we were sat right away. Now the place is a nice atmosphere but I felt the tables and chairs needed an upgrade. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. She amazed me how she knew all the specials and prices to their meals and appetizers. I noticed the waiters and waitress stand close by in case you need anything so they are always on alert. The bathrooms are close to the seating area and they have a back room for events so the place is pretty big. Now the food was amazing. We started with the calamari and it was so good. The pieces tasted fresh and were thick pieces of meat. The surf and turf was delicious and the lobster again tasted so good. We matched our food with some delicious wine. Last review was over 9 years ago- just went back to Haps. Matt was our server and was 10/10 stellar service. The attention to detail, attentiveness, helpful, and knowledgeable bout the history of the place as well as the menu! Ambiance has not changed. Clean, old money feel. Moody lighting, old school decor. FOOD! The food. Wagyu beef amazing! Foie gras TENDER, delicious. Center cut filet mignon little tough cut but amazing chew and flavor. Ribeye- huge and delicious. Season veggies are delicious. I like simple. Don't complicate green beans. Not over cooked, not undercooked. Perfect. MAC AND CHEESE- is unbeatable. No one comes close, hands down the BEST SIDE!!! Cheese cake is perfect. Chocolate cake is delectable without being over sweet. Drinks- Old fashioned tasted like straight whiskey, but who minds if it's good whiskey. We had our wedding rehearsal dinner here a couple weeks back and had an amazing time! Staff was very efficient in dealing with such a large group (21 people), taking orders, getting appetizers distributed, accounting for several different allergies/dietary restrictions, and more. They also put us at a large table in the back so it was relatively more private and comfortable. I really appreciate the effort they put into setting up for us! For the food, almost everyone ended up ordering the signature prime rib for the main course, and we split several different appetizers (calamari, cocktail shrimp, scallops which was the special appetizer of the day that was not on the menu, and more that individuals might have ordered). Appetizers were all solid, with the standout definitely being the scallops! So if those are on the menu when you go, I'd definitely recommend ordering it. The signature prime rib was HUGE but at the same time I think finishable by most people. Everyone was pretty shocked and intimidated when the plates were first put down but I think most of us ended up finishing, even with all the appetizers we ate beforehand. The rib itself was so, so soft and tender, with my only complaint perhaps being that the gravy could have had a bit more flavor--but I may just not be used to eating prime rib as I usually order leaner cuts of steak. I'd also recommend getting the prime rib cooked medium instead of medium rare if you typically prefer medium rare for other cuts (but I think this applies to all prime steaks and not just this restauarant). For dessert, we tried the bread pudding (which was seasonally flavored as a pumpkin spice bread pudding) and the chocolate creme brulée. I was a huge fan of the chocolate creme brulée, and found the bread pudding to be solid but not standout. Overall, I am really glad that we chose this restaurant for our rehearsal dinner! Pleasanton is a ways away from me, but if I'm in the area again I'd probably stop by and try some of their other steak! read more

At Haps again sitting at the bar with Eric having our usual Sunday dinner. Starting off with the crudites then Grilled artichokes. Both come in a reasonable time and we enjoy without being rushed. Then our main prime rib sandwich and crispy French fries arrive served spot on. Eric our bartender on Sunday evenings is such a pleasure to have serve us. He is Professional and so Personable. No matter how busy it gets he is always aware if you are in the need of something. He is quite the mixologist and has excellent recommendations. I was disappointed by the service here. We came here for our anniversary and our service was subpar. He obviously wasn't familiar with the menu, he completely butchered my lobster while serving it, and served me a cocktail that was dripping with whipped cream all over the sides because he "thought we'd enjoy the extra". We decided to switch up our Anniversary spot and try Haps again for an early dinner. We use to go probably twice a month to the bar for drinks and calamari but it had been years. The waitress was amazing, as she rattled off a long list of specials, their descriptions and prices. I loved that she included the prices. Sometimes it feels a bit weird to ask for prices. Remember the statement "if you have to ask you can't afford it" but times are tough and it's also smart to know your budget, so thanks for not making me ask. Any who....as for the food we ordered it all starting with the best drink I've had in awhile. A simple gimlet with muddled cucumber, served up as a martini. This is my new favorite drink. Hubby order one of his usual's, Dirty Martini. Before our drinks arrived we were served bread, butter and a cute crudite bowl with veggies (carrots, celery, giant radish, green onion) and a white dip which I thought was Ranch but it was a sweet creamy dip. Then we ordered the fried calamari steak appetizer. It had the lightly breaded fried onions and red bell peppers like how we ordered it years ago but it was a good sized calamari steak vs. rings and tentacles, and by the way that is my favorite kind of calamari cut. It was served with a creole sauce. I liked this sauce with the calamari but since I get "fried out" the crudite sauce I still had was lighter, toning down the richness of the calamari. Hubby likes the creole best. I'll take both please :) We both ordered the French Onion Soup and I can't say enough about this soup. It was excellent. It was the best I've had recently and oddly enough I have had it out quite a few times recently. It was rich, beefy, flavorful, perfectly dark and cheesy but not annoyingly cheesy. I will go back soon for the soup and that cocktail at the bar! For dinner I ordered the Ahi Tuna with green beans. The Ahi Tuna tasted good but it was odd. I would have preferred the white sauce to be on the side vs. covering the entire sliced steak. You couldn't see that it was crusted or rare since there was so much sauce and it was so thin. It was the thinnest ahi tuna steak served rare I've ever had, 1/4" or so. Hubby had the filet which was good but we are both moving away from steaks so not overly excited. His loaded baked potato was bangin :) and the half of leftovers was still great after a minute in the mic. The green beans that came with were a big surprise because green beans are not a favorite but I wasn't excited about another veggie so I ordered the spinach salad. It was more interesting than simple sautéed spinach and it turned out to be a perfect side and great with my scrambled eggs in the morning. As a salad I may request a little more dressing on the side next time. Of course since it was our Anniversary I had to have crème brulle, my favorite dessert. No need to go to San Francisco for a great steakhouse. Hap's is much closer with food and service just as good. Traditional, elegant dining room but a more impromptu meal is also available at the bar. Have only eaten in the dining room once, prefer sitting at the bar. Come right at 5 pm opening and have a good chance of snagging a seat there. Love the crudite. Kind of ignore it at other restaurants but here they serve the veggies simply chilled with ranch dressing for dipping. So yummy. I've never raved about plain raw veggies before. Love the Caesar and always ask for anchovies. Steak Diane is a regular order. Juicy steak, luscious sauce. A-okay spot with a classy dining ambience and stellar customer service. What's disappointing is the overpriced food and drinks. The steaks are well cooked but don't have much flavor, and the sides are pretty disappointing for such an expensive meal, i.e. several pieces of bell pepper and string beans. Hap's has been around for ages, I ate here once before, but it must've been 20+ years ago. They've got good steaks, & good customer service. One thing over the years I've paid attention to, is if something is still in business years later, it's probably a good establishment. At first the menu was limited as we had a big party, my guess is around 50 people or so. But then it got shortened to around 30, so we were able to order off of the regular menu. We had a private room pretty much, all the way in the back. There was another party there, but much smaller, probably about 10 people. Tricia was our server and honestly was excellent, so were the others helping her out. But Tricia I was impressed by how well she was on top of things for a party of 30, not an easy task. Food was great. Easily one of the best prime ribs I've ever had, it had tons of flavor, was perfect density, tenderness, temperature. Most people don't eat sauces with prime rib, typically just the au jus it comes with, but I got the peppercorn sauce, and gravy sauce and had more than a few bites of my prime rib dipped in those. Sides are huge, so if you go with 4 or less, 2 sides is enough, like spinach & mash, 4 people easily could share those 2. I would dine here again hands down. read more

Service was good for our party of 9. Our server was very proficient in rattling off all the specials that weren't on the menu. I complimented her on how she was able to recite all the items and kiddingly asked her if she'd repeat it from the top. I honestly felt there were too many items not listed and I would have preferred being able to peruse the specials visually. 4 of us chose the boneless ribeye special that came with mashed potatoes. We all enjoyed the ribeyes. 4 of us had the large cut prime rib and 1 had the smaller cut. My husband enjoyed his prime rib but he didn't like the edges as it was really salty and reminded him of beef stew. All our meals were served with green beans. We ALL thought the green beans were tough. We all had leftover green beans on our plate. I was hoping the server would come by to ask how we enjoyed our meal, but we were never asked. While we ordered desserts, I took the opportunity to tell our server that we all thought the green beans were tough. She thanked me and said she'd be sure to tell the chef. Great location, the area has that old small town vibe. Very popular amongst the corporate crowd and I can see why, the service is outstanding. Our server did a tremendous job describing the abundance of specials available, they were never ending and her delivery was steady and crisp. The food was great, I went with a 10oz center cut filet mignon, perfectly cooked to a medium rare. We had tried various sides like the mushrooms, brussels, mac, au gratin potatoes and truffle fries. So I have driven past Hap's many times, often wondering how good their steaks and seafood might be. I must say that the outside of the building does not reflect the amazing ambiance and vibe of the restaurant indoors. The restaurant has a very friendly vibe, and the staff was so very friendly and helpful. We wanted to find a good steak house that also offered mixed drinks and great service and boy did we find it here! The food was so very delicious. We were seated in the "back room" and were able to have a nice, friendly family gathering. This was a chance for our family to all celebrate a late Christmas, exchanging gifts and stories while getting great service throughout the time we were there. The restaurant has a wonderful vibe (Yes, I mentioned that already, but it was worth mentioning again!) and you feel like you're having a wondering family dinner, in a warm family room home. We've been to Haps several times, the food and service was five star! Since we had our second date at Haps we decided to have our post wedding dinner at Haps. They have a lovely private room in the back. We had just around 60 guests and everyone who ordered the steak (about 45 of our guests) came out exactly how they liked it. The mashed potatoes were these silky light flavorful clouds on the plates. I had chicken piccata - the sauce and steamed veggies were delicious... Now for the service - I don't think I've ever been treated better at any restaurant. Lynne does an amazing job with the team. Very gracious hosts and service was very quick especially for our group. My wife and I went to Haps for our 51st anniversary. We have been quite a few times over the years, but not in the last 2. Service was good, the food was hit and miss. The calamari was quite good, all meaty parts, no tentacles. However, my wife prefers cocktail sauce instead, so they added a very small ramekin with the standard small ramekin of aeoli sauce. When the bill came they added $3 for that. Really?? The Haps original salad had a funny tasting dressing my wife didn't care for. She ordered prime rib with a side potato. The waitress asked " loaded or just potato"? She wanted sour cream and chives, so she said loaded. When the bill came they added $3 for that, $14 total. Really?? Her prime rib was ok. , but rather tasteless. I ordered the pork chops, pretty good but a bit dry. We were too full for dessert, and we don't drink, still the bill was almost $200. And the additional add for a couple tablespoons of cocktail sauce and sour cream is tacky. Plenty of better options out there. The prime rib 16 oz was tasteless and tough I expected more for what I was paying. I understood the service as I feel they wanted you not to be rushed and enjoy the dining experience. I'm writing this 5-star review for Haps as a customer who several years ago left a less than glowing review. Because it is such an institution in Pleasanton, we've come back multiple times, hoping that we'd just caught Haps on a couple bad nights previously. I'm thrilled to say our recent experiences have been consistently outstanding. So much so that we just brought a group of 10 to Haps last night and had an amazing, memorable experience. The food quality was tremendous--fresh, flavorful, and clearly prepared with care. Multiple orders from our group of the filet, prime rib, pasta and fish were all raved about. The service was excellent; the staff is warm, attentive, and genuinely focused on making sure every guest is taken care of. Shelby has been our go-to server over the past year we've returned to Haps and she was as attentive, knowledgeable and charming as we've come to know her to be. The support staff is also well-trained and efficient. I would caution diners that Haps is an experience. Fine dining the way it used to be. Don't expect to see your entrees pop on the table before your appetizer plate is cleared. Service is timely, but be prepared to relax, enjoy a cocktail and conversation, and just take it in. We went to Haps for our 7th anniversary and the host was thoughtful and they sat us at a booth that gave us a sense of being out of the normal activity. Our wait staff was attentive and caring. We shared Haps' delicious specialty house prime rib. The chef thoughtfully cut it in half and split the plate so each of us got a generous portion! What would've been an amazing evening, was turned into an experience we still reminisce about as our best time at Haps yet! Thank you for making our anniversary so special! read more
