Long overdue but I'm glad I got to try this place out. I had it bookmarked for a while but never had time to try it out. I came on a rainy Saturday evening. I came to where there was a band setting up their instruments so I'm guessing they do live music? Idk on what times/days though. I'm not super familiar with Caribbean/ South American cuisine but I was open to what to expect. I went with a safe bet and order the paella oyó, and you know, it wasn't bad. The rice got me full pretty quickly but the protein choices were tasty, but I want to highlight the star of this establishment and that is the freaking banana bread pudding. We usually don't venture out on Valentine's Day, but we made an exception this year when a friend suggested going to Oyo. Thankful we made a reservation because it did get crowded. They had a special Valentine's Day menu and we couldn't order anything from the regular menu. Guess we'll have to come back. 1. Paella Oyo - was very very flavorful and spicy - spicy for my palate but the staff kept refilling my water glass. (THANK YOU! Lol) I really appreciated that they removed items from the paella I can't/won't eat (pork and peas) 2. Oxtail stew - hubby really enjoyed this dish. The picture looks deceiving, but there was a lot of oxtail under the plantains. 3. $19 Calypso Ceviche - small portion is not "sharable." 4. BBQ Oysters were not good. The oysters were so small and tasted burnt. 5. Porcini mac and cheese was very flavorful. We should've ordered another one to go. We're coming back to try their regular menu. Came for an early Mother's Day celebration on a busy Saturday and had an incredible experience! The South American and Caribbean flavors were so rich, bold, and vibrant in every dish. I loved the jerk pork tacos! The pork was juicy, tender, and aromatic, and the mango-papaya salsa added a refreshing sweetness. I also tried the paella Oyo that my sister ordered which was sooo yummy and full of protein. The small size was more than enough! My mom ordered the oxtail stew which wasn't on their brunch/lunch menu (dinner only), but I really appreciate that they were accommodating to make that dish for her. I've never had oxtail and it was delicious--tender, perfectly sweet and savory, and paired well with the plantains. The other dishes that my family ordered were hits too (jerk pork shoulder and seafood paella). We also tried the ripe plantains pancake Oscar for a sweet treat. I love anything marshmallow, so the brûléed marshmallow cream that blanketed the pancakes was heavenly. It also came with a plantain on top and a few other fruits to balance out the sweetness. Overall, we left full and all around very satisfied. The staff showed us such warm hospitality and came around often to check on us, despite being an almost packed house. The Food: Street Food Double: The chutneys were incredibly flavorful, pairing perfectly with the well-cooked chickpeas. The bara pockets were wonderfully soft and delicious. Beef Patties: The pastry was beautifully crisp and savory. The spiced short rib filling was a total delight--it had a nice kick to it without being overly spicy, which I loved. Oxtail Stew: Generous portion size with plenty of chunky meat that literally falls off the bone. It was perfectly marinated in a great blend of spices. The space is vibrant and spacious. They have a full menu and full bar including mocktails and delicious drinks like a sparkling mango lemonade that felt like a vacation drink. I ordered the pork shoulder dish with plantain and rice with black beans. The pork was juicy, tender, and crispy on the outside. It had this amazing green sauce on top that sort of reminded me of chimichurri. My friend had the run down fish out of curiosity but she loved the sea-bass in white wine sauce. I came here for lunch with a co-worker and the place was deserted. There was only 1 other party. However, I heard this place is hopping in the evenings. Inside the decor is very colorful and lively. I was happy to see that they have a lunch specials menu, so I'm not overwhelmed by too many choices. Most of the items are "jerk" and they have a few vegetarian options too. I never know what to expect when I see "jerk" flavoring, but I expect some heat, which was missing from the items we ordered. The food was well seasoned, but lacked any heat. My first time having Guyanese food, and I must say it left me wanting more. All the dishes were bursting with bold flavors. I loved the fresh tropical salad, the tender grilled octopus, savory with a hint of heat beef patties with a flaky buttery crust and most of all, the jerk chicken was amazing!!! For a party of 5, we did family style and ordered: -tropical salad: refreshing and the addition of jackfruit compliments the salad very well -baked mac and cheese with crab $22:this was probably our least favorite in comparison to all the other dishes this was very basic. Girls night done right! We ordered everything family style so we could maximize what we could try. I think my favorite dish was the oxtail with dumplings and sweet plantains. A close second was the Jamaican jerk pork. These dishes were truly bursting with flavor. The rookie move for me was ordering the sweet plantains as one of our appetizers. Since both entrees came with sweet plantains, neither of us felt it was needed - but still delicious! I would also skip the ceviche. It was a cooked seafood ceviche, which is totally fine, but was overcooked and a bit tough. I would skip this dish too. We also split the dessert sampler, which we all felt was lacking for us. We felt that there were too many contrasting flavors and just couldn't quite get on board with the items. Lastly, service was great! We ordered the jerk pork shoulder for the first time and it was so tender and flavorful. We also ordered the run down fish, sweet plantains, seafood paella, and calypso ceviche. Everything we ordered tasted so delicious, as always. Our favorite dish is still the Trinidadian chana with the unique flavors that they use. The pickles are so good. We weren't given any pickles until I asked. In the past, they were just brought to our table. I'm not sure if this is only done over the weekend or by request now. The pancakes were very good a marshmallow island I taste along side with tropical fruit. Now the Ribeye along side a potato hash with medium eggs, was NOT good at all . I don't know what happened but it all tasted the SAME a 1 Star meal . The Ribeye was very fatty and super thin Tough over cooked . (Granted)I ask for a medium cook some parts of the steak was a little Rancid to me Unedible . My eggs were extremely overcooked toasted . The potato hash was No flavor Greasy. I wish I had better things to say about this place as the other Yelpers did, and rarely do I give such a mediocre rating, but this place did not hit as I expected it to. I came based on the high ratings on Yelp. It was Father's Day, so the menu was modified, and maybe that is why the items were limited. First, I have to say that the decor is aesthetically pleasing and the art is amazing. I liked how welcoming the interior is. It is also a larger space, so I like how everyone is spread out. We came in with reservations, so we got seated quickly. The service was very slow, understandably as it was Father's Day. It took me a while to decide on something and there wasn't a kids' menu, so it was hard to decide. I have been to some impressive Caribbean restaurants where I left so happily satisfied, so my bar was set high. We went with: -Jerk chicken-1/5 overcooked and just no...the meat was dry. It needed sauce. I felt like I was eating cardboard -- took a bite and couldn't do it. -Seafood platter - 2/5 For $65, we were expecting more. It was simply an appetizer, all cold and underwhelming. -Pancake Oscar - 4/5 This was the only thing my child would eat and he enjoyed it.
