My husband ordered Croque Señorita and Tres Leches French Toast for our breakfast. I really enjoyed everything. The staff are friendly, the food is excellent and they have big portions so it's great value for money. There's ample room to dine-in. There are seats inside the restaurant and there is outdoor seating too. I wished we knew about this place sooner!

Looking for a break from hotel breakfast led me to Castro's Waikiki, and I'm glad it did. This small Cuban restaurant was a delicious change of pace and incredibly convenient to my hotel. The breakfast was fantastic, with flavors that felt fresh, comforting, and a little different from the usual Waikiki morning fare. The service was friendly and welcoming, though definitely operating on island time, so this is probably not the place to visit if you're rushing to rope drop. Fortunately, the food was well worth slowing down for. Everything I tried was phenomenal, and I left already thinking about what I want to order on my next visit. This is exactly the kind of local spot I hope to find when traveling.

Outstanding. I hate to even write a review because I want Castro's to be the hidden gem that it is. I discovered Castro's on a whim of wandering around Hawaii. The location off the beaten path is what originally drew me in. The exterior patio seating with blue umbrellas made me curious. Once I walked inside, I instantly knew the Cuban food was going to hit. Not only did it hit, it exploded into space and I returned 4 times on my vacation and recruited family members to go multiple times as well. On my first solo visit, I was going in to strictly get coffee and then decided to give a main dish a shot which was the traditional cuban. Let me tell you - I wish my husband was with me as the portions here are out of this world. This dish came out on a colorful dish on top of a bamboo board with fruit galore! It looked like a painting that I shouldn't touch but rightfully did. Needless to say, I had a leftover box on day 1. I then returned more times and want to highlight the Monte Castro sandwich which I fortunately or unfortunately split with my husband. Unreal!! It was drizzled in honey, served on the bamboo plate, had double decker bread and a plethora of fruit and some picked veggies on the side. I don't want to say more because I want everyone to go and split this meal with a loved one. It is award winning deserving. For my 3rd visit, I had the papaya bowl and once again - it was fantastic and required a to-go box as well. I'm so sad to know I'll never get to try the tres leche French toast as my vacation is coming to a close and there are so many more items I wanted to try. Castro's knows how to do it and I really think all restaurants should take notes from this establishment. From the water guns to spray the birds away to the dining service experience to the quality and taste of the menu item - chef's kiss. Thank you, thank you!!! Best meals in Hawaii hands down. OUTSTANDING!!

Cute brunch spot with beautiful food presentation. We ordered the Cubano and the Tres Leches French Toast - the Cubano was delicious, but the French toast was just okay. It's a small place with some seating both inside and outside. Service was relatively fast. One of the staff didn't seem very friendly and rolled their eyes when we asked to make a change to our order, but aside from that everything was fine.

Worth the wait! This was the second time we had breakfast at Castro's, and it reminded me of how great their coffee and food is. We had the traditional Cuban breakfast and the Salmon plate, both well made. If both parties like Salmon, the Salmon will easily feed two people. You get 4 full rolls of Smoked Salmon filet, and bread and fixings to make an amazing breakfast. The Cuban was great as well, but more of a 1-person Enterprise. Overall, great top-quality food and experience on the strip.

Recommend sitting at one of the tables under an umbrella. There's trees, and the uncovered tables come with risk of bird poop (a fresh one landed on my hat). Prices rang up higher than what was displayed on menu -- when I asked, that's when they said there's a surcharge when using cards. So, pay cash and save. French toast: 5/5!! Out of this world. One of the best I've had. Crispy edges, fluffy innards, delightful amount and assortment of fruit (blueberries, Asian pear, yellow kiwi, citrus, banana, pineapple, watermelon, and some sort of grape I haven't seen before), all swimming in a delectable rum sauce. Recommend sharing, it's HUGE. Portuguese sausage (side item): 5/5. It's only 1 sausage, but it's delish and comes with a few pickled veggies. Perfect counterpoint to the French toast and rounded out breakfast. cortadito: 5/5. So smooth and rich, best coffee this trip. Also love that it's right next to Vavin -- Vavin's pastry game is right up there with Kona (the infamous, hours-long line in International Marketplace). An entree & coffee from castro's and a croissant from Vavin...perfect shared breakfast for 2.

This place is so great I came back twice on vacation. Let ambiance and setting are great. Very vibrant and friendly staff. The food is prepared fresh and tasty. We had the French toast and it wasn't overly sweet but so balanced and wonderful. Overall highly recommend.

A small eatery with BIG flavor! I was so impressed by the food; 10/10 would dine here again. The menu is not very expansive but don't let that fool you. Portions were perfect and I can't complement the flavors enough. Service was friendly as well. Please go try this spot!

Loved the location--it was just a 5-minute walk from our hotel. The atmosphere was amazing, the food was great overall, and the coffee was excellent. The tres leches was absolutely delicious and definitely a highlight. The egg sandwich wasn't our favorite, but it was beautifully presented. Overall, a great spot that we'd happily visit again!

I didn't think one of my favorite breakfasts of all time would be Cuban food, especially in Honolulu. I shared this recommendation with friends afterwards and they doubted as well. But trust me, Castro's delivers. The dishes are beautifully plated and they all came with a side of fruit. The Cuban sandwich here was the best I've ever had, better than any I've had in Miami. The crab and shrimp toast and the watermelon and beet salad were also great. This is a must-try.

If you are looking for amazing tasting coffee - great food (brunch style) Castros is the place to be. Definitely worth it. Cafe con leche- is a must if you enjoy coffee- dark enough yet it's perfectly sweatened.

But this place is excellent No matter how many you have... My usual is the pernil plate-- tasty pulled pork with your choice of sides. I usually like the yuca or plantains, and gandule rice. Tried the bean stew hanchules today--so good on the rice. Also got to watch them make the pasteles. Stevena the owner said that in Puerto Rico they only make this for special occasions. But here everybody wants it all the time, and she sells out of them. Small parking lot out front and outside seating. The rice and plantains are always so amazing tho. I've been wanting to try them out lately so I did a Door dash order and got their Steak Mofongo! It was good. A lot of garlic which I don't mind because I love garlic, a pina colada and Tres Leches. Since I did Door Dash and didn't sit in I'm sure the condensation made my tostones a little soft but they're normally so crunchy. I didn't dine in to get serviced and experience the inside of the restaurant for the ambiance and I know that does mess up food quality since I'm not getting it hot from the kitchen. I will need to dine in next time to get the true quality. Overall I will definitely try out the restaurant and dine inside for a change.

Simple order, #5…read moreone pastele (hot) and gandule rice, 1 small order of pastele stew, and 1 side order of bacalao salad, and 2 pastele lumpia. Hubs picked up the order and brought home lunch. Side note, the last time I ordered the stew/rice combo, it wasn't enough for the Mr, and since there was rice at home, he ordered the stew separate. I was in a meeting, and would enjoy my food after I was done. As I stepped out of my home office, I see hubs hardly at any stew, and I asked him if he was waiting for me to eat. He said no, and told me "if you want the stew, you can have it". Oh no, I know exactly what that means, so I offered him half of my pastele plate. He said no, and he looked bummed out. I knew I would need to reheat my plate, as it sat for 20 minutes before I got to eat it. While I was reheating my plate, I took a bite of his stew. I had to stop and look at the stew and it looked different. So I took another bite. The taste was ok (not like the amazing stew in the past), but the meat had a different texture. One more bite.....that's when I realized and then asked hubs, "Is that ground pork? Is that why it's different?" And he agreed, "that's what it is! ground pork!" The flavor was a bit off too, but the meat made all the difference. My reheated #5 plate was fine, a little bit salty, but just fine, no complaints. Finished up with the pastele lumpia, which was greasy (usually is unless its fresh) and asked hubs about the bill. Well, I understand inflation is a terrible thing for small businesses and consumers, but my jaw dropped when he said it was $50. And he wasn't a happy camper about the price or the stew. -Sigh- I don't give up easily on places I've enjoyed for years, so I will be back, eventually.

Beans were well cooked and flavored. So was the rice. The bananas/ plantains added good sweet flavor to the whole meal. The coconut cheese was interesting. Never had that before but it did taste like cheese and added flavor. The jackfruit arepa sandwich that we had, could have had the jackfruit, cheese, plantains mixed together better. The jackfruit bowl was better as it was easier to mix everything and get all the flavors together. Pretty much same as the sandwich but a little more and easier to mix (so would recommend the bowl over the sandwich). The sandwich seemed to be made of rice. We also had a mango and a coconut slushie drink. The mango tasted like the mango concentrate from Costco (sugary) and the coconut was a little more original/ different. We liked both though. Limited indoor seating. Outdoor seating available. Steady flow of patrons. The only thing I didn't like was that the price was a bit high though in my opinion but I guess everything in Maui is that high priced. Update: went back and got a coconut slushie drink again :) and tried the plant based mushroom and cheese (coconut cheese) and fish empanada. They were delicious with the mushroom being our favorite. The chipotle sauces and cilantro onion sauces were delicious as well! The empanadas are not made to order (they are premade so you cannot seperate out the cheese from the mushroom but it does not have a strong flavor). I also liked the coconut slushie by itself vs mixed with mango. Note: The empanadas come in 2: when you eat in house, a red Chipotle sauce and white cilantro onion sauce are given with it (as well as with the arepas); there is another sauce for vegans (think it's a cilantro/ oil/ spice sauce). We liked the white sauce better than the vegan sauce. The empanadas are not made to order (they are premade). If you order to go, you are only given once sauce. If you want more than one, you need to just add it on before you leave with the big dispensers. Otherwise, you only get one sauce (not sure why you can't just add white and red sauce in the same to go container but we weren't given the option). And, to make things worse, the lady said curtly she would charge me next time for 2 sauces "due to the plastic". well, thank you for not charging me but the statement was unnecessary IMHO. Note for improvement (and for this, I was tempted to drop the star rating): we came here multiple times and gave your business a lot of our dollars (about 135.00), yet the above statement, I don't think was necessary if you are trying to provide good customer service. You should gladly offer extra of the sauce or even, as I suggested above, allow customers to add the sauce themselves if they want more than 1 sauce and you don't want us to "use up your plastic containers". Kind of left a bad taste in our mouths.

A quick google search to check reviews, which didn't bring up much but a legit interview on KHON rested my nerves. I ordered the only item on their menu: a Cuban sandwich, which is ham, roast pork, swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard in a pressed sandwich.
