I had high expectations or hope based off others scores. Street parking and you walk through the arch / entrance to the last shop. No dining in, and all takeout but plenty of outside seating and staff cleaning. Ordered the nachos and takes about 10m or less. The best part was the meat, unfortunately it stops there. Starting from the top, it is covered in jalapeños that can be removed, the "salsa" is large cut tomatoes and there are pinto beans with shredded cheese. The chips were stale and greasy, and there was a weird after taste. It looks like there is nacho cheese (fake) on the chips that made them soggy. The owner or gentleman who took my order was friendly and kind. It was nice talking with him. The experience in the plaza was good, from there things took a turn for the worse. I ordered the Birria taco plate. Instead of getting something that had nuance and depth of flavor that birria and consomé is known for, I received 4 tacos that I can only describe as very underwhelming. There was no cheese, the tacos were smaller than expected for the price, and the "consomé" was very watery and topped with a lot of lettuce and onions? I thought it was supposed to be a thicker dipping sauce and not a watery soup. The tacos were laid down in a row of 4 in the box, but were also covered with chopped lettuce and onions, almost as if to hide how small they were. The veggies were fresh as least, but it was topped with sauce that had too much pepper seeds whether it was jalapeño or otherwise and left a vinegary aftertaste. This coupled with the less than flavorful meat left a strange contrast of flavor and texture. The chips were crispy at least, although not that many. The meat didn't have nuance of flavor and while I understand it was beef and not the traditional goat, this is markedly different to other Mexican restaurants or take out spots on the island like Thydas Tacos or Sabrazon. I also understand it's Hawai'i and not the mainland and there are regional differences, but this was closer to Tex Mex than the Mexican food I was hoping for. Other people's reviews mentioned how it was a lot of food or enough for two people, but I'm confused how that could be true given the size of the order received unless the other guests are not as hungry or smaller sized. read more

Ordered "birria" tacos and it was the tiny tacos that were so oily and beef tasted so bland! The consommé was the worst I've had. I only ate the veggie street taco so far (it was very filling)?and it might be the best I've ever had in my life. Hands down my favorite restaurant in Hawaii. The food here was absolutely mind-blowing. I got some Birria tacos, and as soon as I took my first bite, I was transported to heaven. The tacos were extremely flavorful, and also extremely balanced since it came with some salad and salsas. The consomme was also magnificent. This is easily the best meal that I've had in Hawaii, and one of the best meals that I've had in my life. The portions are also huge - the platter could have easily fed two people, or one very hungry person like myself. I also got Churros from here, and although they were good, I'd give the Churros themselves 4/5 stars (good but not as good as the best Churros I've had). The savory platters are the real star of this place. The food here was so good that I came back at least five more times during my trip. Well I've never seen one but know where you can find Tlacuaches 808 in Eaton Square tucked right on Hobron Lane just a couple blocks in Waikiki as soon as you cross either bridge to Kalakaua Ave. I had hope to a new discovery but was so disappointed and you'll probably say it's what I got thought still after a bit of analyzing can't get myself to understand how I can go back to try something else. It was decently late in the afternoon and after a lazy Sunday decided to get something for dinner and have been craving tacos or at least Mexican food though it would be perfect to swing by Waikiki since it was pretty mellow at this time of the day. Totally hidden and easily missed if you don't even know Tlacuaches 808 has a cute set up in the bar corner of Eaton Square right besides some koi ponds with a few seatings I thought was nice. Well after much scanning of their menu items I thought to keep it light by having their Taco Salad and couldn't resist trying their Jalapeño Popper Fries. The Jalapeño Popper fries was just that lol Jalapeño Popper with some fries *eye roll* it came with 7 poppers all made fresh and was wicked (temperature) hot but the fries strangely was meh...a bit under fried ate the poppers and threw the fries away. The Taco Salad...with a choice of meat (chicken, pork, beef, veggie or carne asada +$3.50) I decided to try the veggie and why not! According to the menu the salad consists of..."Freshly Made Tortilla Bowl filled with Choice of Meat, Rice, Beans, Lettuce, Cheese and salsa". I didn't feel like beans so I opted out on it. First of all there's no lettuce instead it was RAW shredded cabbage EWWW!!! The veggies seemed random including peppers and onion and some tomatoes which is standard but celery was disgusting for me personally the cheese ratio was insulting this salad was $16.96 which made it worse that I spent over $30 total and was still hungry. I really wanted to like it here the gentleman was nice nothing out of the ordinary but this was just a bad experience and I'm sorry this was no bueno. read more

HOT DAMN! This is a hidden gem that I wouldn't have found if I didn't have to be in this area every Saturday (usually). And boy am I more than satisfied. I spied the Chile Relleno Combo special when I was there the first time.... and it had been haunting me... so this weekend we went back. That... on Setting Eleven! A friend told me not to miss the carnitas.... and he was so right.
