I chatted for a bit with the chef inside I later learned was the owner (Oscar) he was so kind as to solely speak Spanish with me as requested as well as teach me some new phrases so that I can put my Spanish to some more real world use. Now to the food! My first impression was YUMMY! I got the Carne Asada Burrito and the flavor was definitely present not to mention I am a crispy gyal and the way he prepares his Carne makes the meat have some nice crispy exteriors so for me it was really pleasant. My fam all got different variations of the Birria options (Burrito & Quesadillas) I will admit the opposing comments that were among the bulk of us were how messy and essentially difficult to eat the burritos were without a fork (which would've only been an issue if we wanted to eat on the go) as well as the fact that there were no drink options and we all planned to eat at the location. Mayita's is a locally owned business located in a strip mall parking lot across Ala Moana. It is just the man himself working the taco trailer so expect to wait if there are already people in front of you. Worth it though. I always get the carne asadas - 3 for $12. My friend & I tried the carnita but the meat was a bit too dry. They also have jackfruit & chicken tacos. Tacos come with a good amount of meat. Sometimes you can add toppings yourself, other times he'll do it for you. There's onions, cilantro, lime, tomatoes & guac. The salsa verde sauce is so yummy with the tacos. Each taco comes with 2 tortilla shells so you basically get 6 mini tacos if you split them up which is what I do (comes with enough meat to ration). I've seen this lil truck every night from Tuesday - Saturday. We live on the neighborhood nearby and everytime we walk the doggo the taco man truck is present. This is also the closest & easiest access to grab tacos. Onolicious tacos!!!! ~ Been grabbing tacos in here two times already and everytime, it doesn't disappoint us. For a good taco, I will drive, walk, stand on the sidewalk, listen to a generator, and eat in the dark with my hands; and Mayita's Grill is turning out noteworthy tacos. Get the fresh Ahi Tacos seared if he has it. With homemade pico de gallo, guac, onions, cilantro and a squeeze of lime. These were super tasty and fresh. If there's no fish, the Carne Asada and Carnitas are also both good in their own right. And don't miss the homemade chipotle sauce which adds nice heat and flavor. Okay the only bad thing about this place and why I'm only giving 4 stars was the wait. I know it's a little shack and the food was delicious, but we waited in the parking lot for right around an hour... having said that, this food was unbelievably good. We enjoyed the meal so much that even if we had to wait that long again, we said we'd be back. Honolulu doesn't have a great reputation with Mexican food so it's really nice to have a go to place! So ever drive by and see a random cart on the road?! That's this place here! He's located across the street from ala moana hotel. There's parking near by in front of a nail salon and pay day loans. The area can be a little sketchy so come with a friend or two! He said he made the cart himself. So genius! It literally fits just one person in there but he has what he needs to do his job. I recommend the pork burrito over the tacos. It's the best bang for your buck. The wait can be long sometimes but then again it's just one person doing everything, so keep that in mind too! ;) each burrito is roughly about 8$ each- cash only! There's even a condiment bar with salsas and fresh cilantro. Be warned some of the salsa is a wee bit spicy! But it's good tho. I went with a girlfriend one day and we ate there. We asked where do people normally eat? He said it's ok to eat on the counter or on the small table in front of the cart where all the hot sauces are. He said that's what they do back at his home town. So we did! And later ordered more to go for our families before we left. Hopefully he can get some help. Maybe a cashier? That would be cool. I'm so happy that I finally got to try this little taco truck! I went to school in LA, so I've missed getting tacos from taco trucks. Mayita's Grill isn't even really a taco truck -- more like a cute little taco cart! My boyfriend was attending a conference at the Convention Center, so we decided to meet at Mayita's for dinner. This is entirely a one-man-show. The taco cart is so small the man barely has space to turn around, but trust me -- he makes magic in that truck! My boyfriend ordered the chicken tacos and I ordered the carne ones, and we had one of each. We sat at the single table that is next to the cart. If that one table is taken, you may have to take your taco to go or eat it standing. The tacos came out within 20 minutes, and there's a variety of toppings you can add on (including homemade salsa in a giant mortar & pestle). I liked being able to add on exactly how much fresh cilantro, lime, and chopped onion that I wanted. The tacos were delicious. Probably one of the best I've had on island! They tasted like ones I would get from the taco trucks in LA! My boyfriend's favorites were the chicken ones, but I actually really liked the carne ones. They were finger lickin' good! I believe you can park in that small strip mall parking lot where the cart parks, but we parked in Ala Moana (because we were going to Shirokiya afterwards anyway). I love this place! I love the authentic feel of a small cart serving up great Mexican food. I miss having great tacos at my leisure back in Florida right after a night out downtown or enjoying the many street tacos in LA when visiting family. I'm beyond happy we have such a place like Mayita's Grill. I wish we had more (quality ones) like it around the island. This small cart right across from Ala Moana Hotel in the same lot as Lucky 7 Liquor is a must for your Mexican cravings. The owner and operator Oscar is an amazing guy! He has 1-2 people that'll fill in for him every now and then but for the most part he's a one man show. And that includes prep for all his ingredients! I feel like that's the hardest part (at least most monotonous) of any food establishment. But props to Oscar for putting in the hard work and being passionate about it. He's always down to talk story as long as his line isn't too hectic. Otherwise just enjoy the disco or old school rock he plays as he grills away. Chicken or Carnitas Tacos are 3 for $10 and Carne Asada are 3 for $11. If you're feeling a bit more hungry the burritos are bang for your buck; Chicken/Carnitas $10 and Carne Asada $11. There's also tostadas as well but I've never tried them. I'm a sucker for carnitas so that's my default and Oscar cooks up some great carnitas! My dad usually gets carne asada and I always sneak in a bite (amazing!). All salsas are made in house. You definitely have to try his chipotle, it has a kick but you'll survive. Along with the salsas you have almost every Mexican hot sauce you could want. I highly recommend! Be sure to check the Yelp page for hours because sometimes they do change. But for the most part he's fairly consistent and you're guaranteed to catch him at night! read more

My endless search for a go-to Mexican spot led my to Mayitas Grill, which may be the answer. Mayitas is a small food cart located a block down from the Convention Center in a small parking lot. It's big enough to only fit a single person inside, and is easy to miss bc of how small it is, but don't overlook this place. There is a picnic table to enjoy your food on the spot, but I'd recommend this as more of a take out and enjoy at home (or on the beach) kinda place. The food was great. It's a small, simple menu, but what they do offer, they do great. You can get either a burrito, street tacos or a quesadilla, with you choice of various Mexican style meats. I had the Asada Burrito, and although it's simple, the flavor was on point. The serving size is smaller compared to the California Mexican spots I'm used to, but it's still worth trying! The food did take a little longer to get, so keep that in mind and don't come starving! Overall, Mayitas is definitely worth checking out. My only gripe with them is that it's been hit or miss on when I can catch them open. Keep in mind that they are cash only. read more

In one line: We visited this little food stand on the recommendation of friends who said it was a 'must.' Our experience was mixed.' The Good: They really do make tasty food here -- amazing, given the size of the kitchen. It's really a one-man (at a time) operation; I don't think you could fit two in there. The menu is understandably limited, but their carne asada and carnitas were excellent, and they offer some wonderful salsas and other toppings (cilantro, onions, tomatoes) which you can serve yourself. The Bad: Everything is being cooked fresh (vs. a place like Chipotle, where everything is just assembled from ingredients being heated on a steam table), which should be a positive, but the wait can be ridiculously long. We ordered tacos and a burrito and ended up waiting nearly an hour at dinner time. And because it's essentially one server/cook doing everything, even two or three orders in front of you is a rush and means you won't be eating for a while. :-( Don't come here during a busy time unless you're prepared to wait. And in an unexpected disappointment, the size of our food items was adequate but not generous, making value only okay. The Ugly: On the night when we went, they ran out of cilantro. And tomatoes. And one of the salsas. I like that they're trying to make everything 'fresh,' but they just don't have the capability to keep up with even a small crowd in a reasonable amount of time, and the tininess of the kitchen means that they're likely prone to running out of items. Our tacos were supposed to have sour cream, but they ran out... The location wasn't easy to find because the little trailer they work out of is so small (kind of like that island in Pirates of the Caribbean which can only be found by those who already know where it is...). We parked for free in the lot right next to the food stand (in front of the payday loan spot, IIRC). Bottom line: This was good enough to eat again, but the likelihood of having to wait so long means that we probably won't do it often. Mayitas is literally a mobile grill located in a strip mall parking lot. When I went, there was a long line and even longer wait. There is one guy taking orders, cooking the food, and serving the finished orders. It took nearly 40 minutes to get my order, with only 2 orders in front of me. There are no tubs for the salsa so the salsa is put into the bottom of the Styrofoam containers, making the tortillas soggy. Overall the food was good, but probably won't go back. read more

The Burrito comes with well seasoned steak that's diced cooked on a skillet, guacamole, pico de gallo, beans, sour cream, lettuce and cheese. UPDATED: this doesn't change my opinion on the food, but this is a heads up for the owner. While we were eating the benches smelled like chlorine or bleach and they were a bit damp, but I thought it was damp because it had been raining off and on. Well, after we finished eating we walked across the street to Ala Moana and noticed that my clothes had totally bleached :'( maybe try diluting the solution or wipe it down an extra time so it doesn't ruin anyone else's clothes. My carne asada burrito was A-OK. Cook/owner Oscar makes your food to order so be prepared to wait a little. He seals his burrito's by searing the loose end on a plancha. That crisp edge gives the burrito a nice taste and texture to complement all the goodness contained within. Oh but Oscar's chipotle salsa. Winnah winnah de pollo cena! That gets Mayita's an extra star from me. Try 'em. You may have to ask for it. I did and Oscar happily obliged and ground/mixed it up in a molcajete right there on the spot.
