    Tacos de Carnitas
    Rod U.

New Mexican eatery with huge potential. Vibrant freshness meets bold flavors. The street tacos showcasing well seasoned, juicy shredded pork with a picante salsa. A squeeze of fresh lime brings the flavors together nicely. The enchiladas de pollo, extremely well seasoned, slightly spicy finished with sour cream and more of the zesty, bright salsa. Pairs well with the sides of minimally seasoned beans and rice. Both pair well with the cucumber limonade. Part of the Fishcake cafe incubator. Popping up every first and third Sunday from 11:00 - 15:00. Self service dine in or takeaway. Cards through Square. Park perpendicular blocking the entrance to Fishcake. Follow on IG for menu and special popup dates. One to watch.

Mi Casa at Iolani Palace... Kama'āina Sunday is certainly an eventful day along with having Mi Casa was a nice surprise as it was a sign to satisfy my cravings I've been having for tacos lately. Their De La Casa plate consists of Tacos De Carnitas (pork) or Tacos De Pollo (chicken), along with Spanish rice and beans and yes not really a beans person I got just rice along with choosing pork. Though their Agua Fresca looks refreshing I had my eye on another sip and got just the tacos and it's a good thing I took the time to take some pics because next thing I know they were gone! These cute street tacos was loaded with all the yummy usuals was just so flavorful it was just the right amount of everything and I was happy! I've been meaning to visit them at Fishcake where they seem to be on every 1st and 3rd Sundays since February but running into them here was a lucky surprise. They staff is delightful and helpful with my questions and it was just a nice environment to be a Kama'āina Sundays and hope to see them at many more future events. Thank you!

Mi Casa is owned by Chef Eddie Gallegos and his lovely wife, Ayaka, who came up with the name, Mi Casa, which means "My House". Currently a pop-up on Sundays at Fishcake in Kakaako, they create and serve unique, comforting, homemade and handmade Mexican dishes. I had the pleasure to pre-order a dish they called "Poblano Pasta Tonkatsu" ($16) which married the Mexican and Japanese cultures of the co-owners. The tonkatsu was a thin breading over tender pork and the pasta was especially wonderful made with poblano peppers, garlic, onion, cilantro, cream cheese, salt, pepper and olive oil. The coolness of the side of salsa complemented the spiciness of the pasta, making each bite of tonkatsu, pasta and salsa pure bliss. I can't wait to join Chef Eddie this week at his cooking demo where we will be making smothered red chicken burrito! Parking for Fishcake at 307 Kamani St. is on the street if planning to stay longer than 15 minutes. Otherwise, there are a few stalls directly fronting the building off Kamani St. for those quicker pickups or deliveries.

Mi Casa is only found every other Sundays at Fishcake/Kakaako. I've been waiting several months to try them out since i'm usually never off on the weekends. I've also heard from several people that their food is really good too, so the anticipation to go was very high. If they're not at Fishcake on the Sunday they're supposed to be there then they may be at Iolani Palace for Kamaaina Sunday which is usually once a month. You may want to follow their instagram to see where they will be just in case. There is several stalls (15 mins each) in front of fishcake. Street parking may be a challenge depending on the time you go. What i love about Fishcake is that they're super dog friendly! i've come here multiple times with my fur-son with various vendors here. Today I tried out the Melon agua fresca which was so flavorful and had some melon chunks in there too. I love that it doesnt taste like water with a hint of fruit. I also tried out their chicken enchiladas which was on the spicier side, so the melon agua fresca totally helped with some of the spice. The entree came with a side of beans and rice. We really enjoyed everything and hope to try other items in the future. Micasa is also a husband and wife team and they were so friendly and sweet. How can you not want to support them?!

It was simple, comforting, and absolutely delicious. My son, who's from California and very serious about his Mexican food, said it was the best bean and cheese burrito he's ever had--which is definitely saying something! The portions are generous, so you definitely get your money's worth, and the spicy sauce has the perfect kick with amazing flavor that takes everything to the next level. If you're craving satisfying, authentic-tasting Mexican food, this place is a must. We'll definitely be back!

The crew inside was welcoming, quick, and the meat was on point. They even came outside to check on us. My son is a picky little dude and started picking onions off his chicken quesadilla. I told him to speak up. The guy smiled, said he had it, and brought out a fresh one with no onions. My son crushed it and even used their mild salsa, which is wild because he thinks everything is spicy. My burrito had great flavor and the asada was legit. I even called home for extra orders so everyone could try it. They loved it too. This spot isn't in our usual area, but I'm glad we found it because it's hard to find solid burritos in Hawaii.

First, being Hawaii, decent means not using pasta sauce to replace pico, not using shredded processed cheese, and not using refried beans from a can. Don't think of comparing this to that "authentic ethnic" spot in LA or the over border drunken stint in TJ. All the requisites from tortas, burritos, tacos, enchiladas, fajitas, sopas including pozole and menudo, on offer. Complimentary C&S, just OK. Kinda soggy chips and the watery salsa doesn't much depth despite being fire roasted and not much spice heat. No complaints on the basic rice and refried beans that accompanied the large, stuffed trio of chicken empanadas (usually comes with two, add an additional for $5). Flavorful enough but not that complex mole. They are finished off with some sour cream, raw onions and crumbled cotija. Solid. Fast, friendly service with servers who seem to know their regulars well. Fair pricing with almost everything sub $30. It is what it is. Not bad for Hawaii and works to scratch the Mexican itch.

Only difference now is they are a sit down establishment serving margaritas and the like. I try carne asada at almost every Mexican eatery I stop at and this place rises to the top. If I had to pick one thing bordering negative it is the location as they are on Kalihi Street well into the Kalihi Valley. But, you will get used to it after your first visit; afterall, it's worth the journey into the "valley" Couple things you should know and that is chicken enchiladas are not made daily. I think it's Tuesday and Thursday? Not sure but it is limited. If you don't already know, their Kapahulu location closed a few years ago. Mexican sounded good to everyone so we picked this spot and we're all very happy we did. Our server was kind and attentive. The place was lovely and decorated with just the amount of fun you expect. Some great photo ops in there. He even told us they were having a mariachi band tomorrow and invited us to come back. The food from the start with nachos and salsa to the end with tres leches was all delicious. I ordered the chorizo queso and it was fantastic. My son ordered the guacamole and it was so fresh and limey. Also delicious. My grandkids shared a quesadilla which was definitely large enough to do so with. My oldest grandson ordered a torte and he loved it. Also a generous portion. My son and I both ordered the grande burrito. He got his wet and I didn't. His was served on a plate and mine came wrapped in foil in a basket. I wish it would have also come on a plate. I like to cut it up to eat and the foil made that difficult to do. But we were looking for something different, quick, and tasty. That's what we got at K-Mex HI although to be quite frank - the parking lot here is terrible! Mostly due to their location in the middle of the street with a handful of street parking locations shared with multiple other businesses down the lane. It took us 3 rounds of driving before we ended up deciding it was better to drop me off to order and pick up the food and have my man drive around into another larger parking lot to wait the 15-ish minutes it would take for our food to be ready. The owners were so nice. Answering all of my insistent questions, smiling when I ended up ordering something different from what they recommended on the menu (my bad - it's a question I ask all businesses even though I usually decide what I want beforehand LOL). They asked if I needed a bag, if I needed utensils and napkins, and even checked in on me while they made the food! Awesome service and I'm sure it would be the same if we decided to eat in. I liked the atmosphere. It was small but homely, clean, and there were a few small fish tanks in the corner! 15-ish minutes later, food packed up - I jumped back in the car and we drove down to South Shore Market in Ward to eat at the tables and take a glance if Ocean Taste's line was... long (it was). And let me tell you... the food? Delicious. The amount of food? Good for the price! And overall pretty darn great experience. I wasn't the biggest fan of the spicy pork (not my preference). But my fiancé liked it and his only comment was that it was a bit greasy for his liking. Reminded him he was in-fact eating spicy pork which is normally served on his plate lunch in a piece of tinfoil so the oil doesn't get everywhere! The carne asada was super delish along with the gochujang hot sauce cups we found at the bottom of the bag. I'd get K-Mex HI again if I was in the area but I'd love to see them in another location where I can more easily park! That's the only real bummer about this place and has deterred me from returning. :(
