I am originally from California so very picky about Mexican food. This place exceeded expectations! I ordered bean and cheese tacos (trust me on these), beef enchiladas with mole sauce, posole and chips and salsa. You can tell everything is house-made, I think even the tortillas are. The salsa taste like it was made with love. The real star of the show was the refried beans (seriously) and the mole enchiladas. Also, the price for the amount of food you get is amazing for Hawaii! Will definitely be coming back to this place! Just be aware, they are only takeout and delivery, no dine-in. And they do not have their own parking lot so I recommend finding street parking on piikoi or one of the side streets. Taco Salad Crispy tortilla bowl loaded with fresh greens, seasoned ground beef, cheese, tomatoes, guac, and sour cream. Portions were generous and tasty, though the dressing could've used a bit more zing for perfection. Nachos Hearty pile of chips topped with beef, beans, melted cheese, jalapeños, and house salsa. Mostly crisp and flavorful, but a few soggy spots from the toppings--still very satisfying Chicken Soup Comforting broth with shredded chicken, rice, cilantro, and a clean taste. Good for a quick warm-up, just wished for a touch more seasoning to elevate it. Convenient Ala Moana location, friendly service, and fair prices. Forever and Ever... El Burrito has been at this location for what seems like forever. This little corner property at the corner of Piikoi and Kapiolani has resisted change and gives you a glimpse of what the surrounding Ala Moana Center area was once like- before the high-rise bldgs started to dominate the neighborhood. Parking is basically on the street. They are currently takeout, but hoping to do indoor dining again. I would stop by for a bite to eat when I had lunch with working friends when my appointments were downtown. The authenticity of the food could be challenged but this pretty much holds true for so many restaurants. Many restaurants make the motherland dishes with a pinch of large local touch. What I do know, the foos is enjoyable and the service great. Our go.to orders are the chicken enchilada and chili relleno plates. The sauces are on the mild side which is how we like it but they will spice it up upon request. Although the chips/salsa is not included the cost is reasonable and the serving pretty generous. This is definitely a place we enjoy getting take out from and it's a short walk from Ala Moana shopping center. When the skyline rail finally gets to Ala Moana Centet I hope El Burrito is still there to provide good local style Mexican Kau Kau to the masses. El Burrito absolutely hit the spot! I ordered the chili verde burrito and it was packed with flavor--tender pork, perfectly seasoned, with just the right kick of spice. The sides of rice and beans were fresh and satisfying, and the chips and salsa were crisp and addictive (I could've eaten the salsa by the spoonful). Portions were generous, service was friendly, and everything came out hot and fast. This place definitely knows what it's doing. I was referred to this restaurant by my father who used to order catering for his company and he mentioned that El Burrito is the perfect place to order catering from if you're looking for Mexican Food. The owner (bless her heart) is incredibly generous and will work with you on your budget and needs for what you want to order. It's no wonder that they've been opened for over 30 years! My son-in-law who is Hispanic & I, picked up some food and he was spoke Spanish to her. Just a note, seems like they don't have dine-in like it was long ago. I LOVED the potato taquitos I decided to add to my order last minute. I would've liked if they listed on the menu that it comes with sour cream on top. I'm lactose intolerant so I was not a fan of that surprise. Lucky for me it was on top of shredded lettuce so it was easy to move off the plate without touching the taquitos. I'd love to come back to order those again!! I wasn't too impressed with my enchilada. The tortilla got overcooked that it had a weird texture when I was eating it. It fell apart funny. The sauce and the filling were alright. I wasn't wowed or anything. The beans and rice had the same effect. The beef chimichanga was good. My boyfriend had no complaints. This is my first review and it happens to be during the Covid-19 crisis so it was a takeout order. One thing that can make a big difference about a restaurant experience is how the staff make you feel. The woman who greeted us as we walked in was fantastic. She made us feel like we were part of the family. She even brought us some mole sauce so we could taste it and packaged up some for us to go. I wish I knew her name so that I could recognize her. Hawaii has been challenged with the Mexican food options, but I feel El Burrito did a pretty good job with their food. The rice and beans were great as was the enchilada. Unfortunately, I was so full that I didn't eat the taco until the next day so I can't really give an opinion on that. I can't tell you how many times I've driven by this location but Hass to be at least 1000 before finally trying it today. The original, oldest, and authentic Mexican restaurant in Hawaii. It opened in 1985 by a Mexican family from Mexico City. I was a fortunate 20 year old back then serving my country in Marine Corps stationed in Kaneohe. My parents were also Mexican immigrants and I was born and raised in Los Angeles county. I know good authentic Mexican food. El Burrito is authentic as they get. Just by tasting the salsa says it all. If the salsa is good you know the rest is awesome. You can't go wrong here. 7/19/17 11:35am- no change in stars from previous review. Called before walking over to make sure they were open this time. I don't recommend ordering the taco salad. First, the lady said their machine wasn't working to make the taco salad shell, so she substituted it with 6-10 pieces of chips. The chicken is shredded and taste was OK at best. There's a tiny dollop of guac, lightly shredded cheese, and NO sour cream. Also, I wondered why my plate was full of water and realized when I took a scoop of lettuce, I ate an ice chunk. Also, menu states the taco salad is $6.00, but she charged me $7.00 The taco salad at Senor Pepe in the Ala Moana food court ($9.75) is 10 times better. Side note- she gave us chips and salsa which were good. Also my co-workers had the burritos which they enjoyed. But based on my two experiences here, I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND/RETURN. read more
