This place is killer! ...it is consistently one of the top Mexican food places on the island in my opinion. Great margaritas, great decor, and delicious food. Consistency is key and I am never disappointed every time I come here. Just take a look at my pictures and ur mouth will start to water. The prices are definitely going up, but that's the same for everywhere. Just make this place ur date night every so often and splurge. I went to Mexico Restaurant with friends last Friday with friends. It was close to the Bishop Museum and I had eaten here before. The food was the same, very delicious. The last time I went there, I didn't have celiac disease so our server did a good job going to the back and asking the chef what had dairy and wheat and what didn't. She was super nice, as most locals are, and was very thorough in finding out what I could eat that was on the menu. I settled on the pork carnitas tacos with refried beans. It was delicious as usual. My friends got the giant burritos, enough for two . The place was sunny, not loud and everyone was so nice. This is a nice local place with good food. I will be coming back. read more

***4.5 STARS*** After a subpar dinner outing earlier this week and a bad day at the office today, I was weary and didn't have much energy to go dinner with some buddies I've known since junior high. Plans were already made and it's been some time since I saw them so I dug deep for positivity and picked up my friends for an early dinner. Venue was Mexico Restaurant (MR), located near the corner of N School Street and Houghtailing. MR has been in business on the busy N School Street for over 18 years now. I've been wanting to try here as I've driven past this place so many times and wondered what their food is like. A handful of my colleagues at work spoke highly of this restaurant and 3 different people told me to try their crab chimichanga which uses real crab meat, evidenced by small pieces of crab shells found while eating. So excited. We arrived at MR shortly before 530pm to have witnessed all parking stalls occupied. One of my friends went to ask the staff if I could park in a marked stall "truck" which was fine. Impressed how all stalls were taken so early. As I walked in, I was in awe of such interesting and colorful decor that gave the restaurant a festive and bright atmosphere. Prior to dining here I read a handful of reviews where it was mentioned chips and salsa are no longer complimentary. The food porn on Yelp's photo gallery showed generous portions so although we were hesitant in ordering a starter, I was tasked to pick something and chose the carne asada fries. I pretty much wanted to try the much anticipated crab chimichanga I've heard so much about but also came across the pescado frito (deep fried fish, catch of the day) served with tortillas, which also got my attention. When our server Jesus advised there's no fish of the day, I asked about my colleague's recommendation of crab chimichanga which I couldn't find in the menu. Jesus advised there's lobster instead which I ended up ordering. The carne asada fries came out shortly and this starter was piping hot and looked delicious. It hit the spot with generous portions of beef, cheese, guacamole and sour cream. Absolutely delicious. The wait for our main dishes didn't seem that long as the time was used catching up with each as it's been quite some time since we last saw each other. 3 hot plates of sizable chimichangas and burrito were served. After snapping photos it was finally time to dig in. My lobster chimichanga was not bad but it lacked the crispy exterior I was expecting and the lobster didn't really shine. You knew you were eating seafood but the lobster didn't shine. The accompanying fried beans, Mexican rice and papaya salsa were tasty but perhaps too much starch on a plate. Food was indeed tasty but perhaps I was expecting too much when advertised as lobster. Portions are massive here where we all took leftovers home for another meal. Service was above average. Jesus and the other staff stopped by our table to check up on us, refilled our water glasses and brought carry out containers as we were done. Overall, a memorable first time at MR where I'd be game for a repeat visit. This time I'd like to try their quesadillas as I also enjoy eating this. A co-worker wanted to have Mexican food for lunch, and we ended up at Mexico Restaurant, on N School St. It had been a while since we were here, but the place hasn't changed, except for the prices. We started with Chips and Salsa ($4), and I ordered a Corona ($8). We ordered the Los Tres Panchos Combo #1, consisting of an enchilada, taco, and chalupa ($29), and a Two Enchiladas plate with shredded beef and rojo sauce ($22). Each plate came with salsa fresca, rice and refried beans. The chips were fresh and the salsa thick, but not too spicy. Our plates came in short order and looked great. I drizzled salsa atop my rice and beans. Yum! I managed to finish my plate; my tablemate tapped out before consuming all of the rice and beans. What did we think? We decided to stop in for one last meal before our flight back home, and my husband and I were blown away. The portions are huge! Our son ordered the nachos appetizer as his main meal, my husband got the Mexico burrito, and I ordered the carnitas plate. I tried a bit of everyone's food, and honestly, we had zero complaints. Every dish was packed with flavor and cooked to perfection. The meat was tender, not overly salty or chewy at all. The guacamole was even creamy! To put the value into perspective: a few days earlier, I bought three carne asada tacos with very little meat from a food court in Waikiki, and they were only a few dollars cheaper than my entire, massive plate here. The pricing is incredible for the generous portions you get, making it a great budget friendly option compared to everywhere else we ate while visiting Honolulu. My husband even noted that he had never had Mexican food this good in the States especially considering Honolulu is so far from the border! He rarely raves about restaurants, so the fact that he's already talking about coming back makes this place an absolute must try. read more

Always wondered about this place as we always visit a restaurant across the road and I'm glad we did today. A guava and a mango margarita for libations and a chile relleno plate, plus a birria plate for me! Consommé was delicious, not overly salty or oily, and the perfect amount of food. Mexico Restaurant is easily one of my go-to spots when I'm craving Mexican food on island. Let's be real--we don't always have the best selection here, but this place is definitely one of the above-average standouts. The portions are HUGE (you'll see in my photos), and everything comes out super satisfying. The guac is made fresh and the chips are always perfectly crunchy and just the right amount of salty--honestly hard to stop eating. Service is always a highlight. The staff is incredibly friendly, and our server was especially bubbly and sweet, which made the whole experience even better. Also, the horchata--while definitely on the sweeter side--is packed with cinnamon flavor and comes in a full-sized pitcher, which is kind of iconic. Not to mention ther full sized bar and Hispanic decor and music - a total vibe! Only thing to keep in mind: the parking lot is pretty tight, especially during peak times or weekend dinners. The menu changed since the last time we've been here but the food tastes so much better than I remember! So yummy! However I recall that chips and salsa used to be free. This time it wasnt. We ordered guacamole with chips. Yummy. But it needed salsa because it got dry and needed salt. So we asked for salsa, because we thought we would still get free chips and salsa. We were billed $2 for the salsa - came in a small little dish. Unfortunately it tasted like marinara sauce so we didnt eat it. The frozen li hi mui margaritas was incredibly yummy! The papaya taco salad (cant recall the exact menu name) with white fish was yummy too. $22 + $5 Lots of fish. So tasty that we didnt need the ranch dressing. Taquitos (chicken) is always tasy, well seasoned. Add $4 to make it a meal. Refried beans good. But their rice is stellar! Excellent flavor! Finished off the beef burrito plate. It's been years since we've been here. Having just returned from San Diego, I was still wanting Mexican food and what better place than Mexico. We came on a Sunday, late afternoon. I usually order chille relleno's but opted for a vegetarian burrito. It came with black beans and a salad. I was not disappointed. It was flavorful and filling. I saved half for later. 05/05/25 happy Cinco de Mayo! Why the fourth star? Well it's because they changed and upgraded the establishment. It's cleaner, more organized, more of Guadalajara than you can expect. I haven't been here in a while, so definitely a difference is obvious. The food is still is great as you can expect it to be It's more expensive than what it used to be. But, that's expected considering it's been years since my last review and also, cost-of-living has gone up. Cost of food has gone up and the list goes on. They have new staffing, all wearing uniform T-shirts, which is pretty cute. I went there today because today is Cinco de Mayo. I also visited after the lunch, rush, and before the dinner rush. Like I said food is good, hasn't changed in fact it's pretty neat the way they present it. Cinco de Mayo was the day to have lunch at Mexico, located on School Street in Kalihi. Arrived around 11:30 to avoid the lunch crowd, which had already beat us. The staff was running around at a pretty fast clip but managed to find us a table for the four of us. Right off I ordered my favorite home made lemonade in a mini pitcher. Two of us ordered our favorites, and two of my friends had vegetarian dishes, which looked (and tasted) so good that we actually finished our meals without needing a to-go box! We stopped by on Cinco de Mayo, so it was incredibly busy, but we were still able to get a table without too much of a wait. The host greeted us warmly, took our names down, and got us seated quickly despite the crowd. Our server, I believe his name was Jose, was fantastic -- fast, efficient, and very knowledgeable about the menu. We've been here before, but it had been quite a while, and this visit definitely reminded us why people love this place. The ambiance was lively and high-energy, which made the experience even more fun and festive. We ordered the trio fajitas, flautas, mushroom skillet, chips and salsa, churros with ice cream, and horchata. Everything was delicious and came out hot and fresh. In my opinion, they have the best horchata and churros on the island. The churros were perfectly crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, and paired so well with the ice cream. One thing to note: chips and salsa used to be complimentary, but now there's a charge for them. That said, the salsa was excellent during this visit, so we didn't mind too much. Overall, the entire staff was friendly, attentive, and handled the Cinco de Mayo rush really well. Even with how packed it was, the service never felt rushed or chaotic. This is one of the original Mexican restaurant. I believe they they are the same owners of Mexico Lindo. Cute decor inside, good service, one of the only Mexican restaurants that kept their Happy Hour. Pretty much the same menu as Mexico lindo on Kailua and Chile Relleno in Koolau. Prices are a tad more reasonable and clean establishment. The bar area is separate but doesn't get much action unless people are ordering. Drinks are good but Mexico Lindo has the best Margaritas. One downfall is their parking is small and no street parking but we've never had a problem getting a space. Definitely check it out! read more

Been a very long time since we been...mainly cuz parking is tight and hard to find along School Street. But there was a stall for a truck...not big enough for ours...and luckily someone else was going out so we snagged theirs. Got in okay since was early...got crowded when we were leaving. I'm a sucker for queso skillets. This was tasty but use regular shredded kinda cheese instead of the melty cheese that's all nice and creamy. So this one hardens junk, isn't as easily scoopable, and you can see/taste the oil. But it's still cheese...so we happily ate it. Baby was eating the cheese and giving us back her chip. That kid... Hubs got Menudo and a couple crunchy tacos. Menudo was pretty tasty. I got the combo with quesadilla, enchilada and chalupa. Enchilada seemed like the kind of homemade burritos I make at home...no enchilada sauce or much of anything other than cheese on top. I guess I didn't know what a chalupa was b/c it was just a taco shell bowl filled with taco stuff in it. Came with refried beans and rice...baby liked the beans, but would have preferred black beans. Not sure if that's an option there. Margs were tasty but pretty weak. Could use an extra shot at least. Waitress super nice and helpful. Cook in the kitchen looked angry, but he smiled and waved at my baby when she waved at him...my baby is my soft spot, so that just made me so happy.
