Stopped in the other day, December 3rd around 4pm-ish for our 3rd dining experience (in almost a year) as my wonderful wife (yeah, she is) were in the area. And, just like the 1st and 2nd visit; the ambiance of this restaurant is relaxing, warm, and welcoming. Also, like our previous visits ALL the Staff here are very attentive; checked on us quite often, asked if we needed anything, refilled our waters, provided us with more napkins (literally, like mind-readers LOL) were very kind, and courteous as well = AMAZING. Oh, just like our 1st and 2nd visit... This place has "hands-down" DA BEST TAQUITOS ON ISLAND!!! However, this time we opted for something we had previously on our 2nd visit. The Guacamole Ranchero and again, it did not disappoint! Was Vibrant, Lucious, and SO... ONO!!! On our 1st and 2nd visit, my wife ordered her favorite "Chile Verde" and what's so funny; this time, she orders the El Mariachi Burrito. But, guess what? Chile Verde "inside" HAHAHA - This visit, I tried the Mamamla Burrito with fish and shrimp. This Burrito ROCKS!!! The fish; NOT fishy, but fresh, moist, and yummy. The shrimp; succulent, tender, plump, juicy, NOT rubbery. SO... ONO!!! I will definitely order that again!! BTW, our Server was "surprised" that I remembered her name "Noemi" she made our 3rd visit just as warm and memorable as our previous visits. She's always smiling and has a really sweet personality! Her "Aloha" really sets the mood and makes your dining experience A LOT more enjoyable from start to finish! Oh, and with the super-generous portions... My wife and I only ate half our meals. This is actually the 1st time, "I" had leftovers LOL Even though we were slightly stuffed. We had never tried any desserts before and had the pleasure of ordering the Churros with Ice Cream. I gotta say, this dessert is literally for 2-3 people. Was crispy, chewy cinnamon-y, a bit on the heavy side if you know what I mean. BUT, it was SUPER-ONO to fill that little void of complete fullness. My wife took a piece and was like "the rest is yours" - I was "struggling" that last few pieces. I could've just eaten the ice cream, whipped cream, and asked for a container to take the rest home. But, I didn't want them soggy. So I just dug deep and went for it! I REALLY enjoyed this dessert!!! I would definitely order that again too! -- Oh, just needed to mention this... So, I'm disabled and in a wheelchair. 1st visit I was walking. 2nd visit I had a cane. The hallway for the men's restroom was rather narrow. I probably could've made it. However, the entrance to the hallway was slightly "blocked" due to the stacked beer cases on the adjacent wall to the left. My wife suggested to use the women's restroom instead as it was before the hallway and just to the right. The women's restroom is huge and roomy. I was able to maneuver my wheelchair very easily. My wife was just monitoring the door. It all worked out PERFECT!!! Oh, before I forget. We didn't know it but we had arrived during Happy Hour. Received $2 off on the Guacamole Ranchero Appetizer and my wife also received $2 off on her Lagunitas Cerveza (beer). So, Overall... We STILL LOVE this restaurant!!!!! We probably won't be back for a long while because I'm having spine surgery next week :'( But, we DEFINITELY come back for our 4th and future visits!!! There are roaches all over, I was going to order my food and eat it at the bar all of a sudden as soon as the server wiped the bar two medium roaches ran across the counter! So disgusting! I prayed that my to go food didn't have them in them! For the roaches being all over the places , this establishment should drop their expensive prices for their mediocre Mexican food! I live nearby so I come here once in a while and I've always had great service and the food was always good. I guess based on reviews, it's a hit or miss on both. Been coming here since I was little so there's been a couple changes but the decor is never changed - Mexico. Came tonight (Sat at 6:30pm) and there was no wait, but the restaurant was full. Service was good. He checked up on us and took our food orders at a good pace. Food came out fast, maybe like 10min? We also ordered chips and salsa - chips were still warm so that's a plus. We ordered a taco salad, traditional tacos, tamale and combo #1. I didn't get a chance to take pics of the food because we were so hungry and it looked so good! I got the tamale. I've had it multiple times before and it was nice and thick and very hot. I highly suggest the combo because it's a little of one of everything if you can't decide. Like most Mexican restaurants, portion size are huge and will most likely have leftovers. Overall, I like this place. Not sure if I'm being bias because it's convenient for me, but I think it's just as good as other places. read more

Stopped here for national margarita day because my friend and I were feeling it. Parking is tight and it's easy to miss, but not the worst I've seen. Menu prices are average. The chips were ok. About a third of them were greasy and limp. We expected the guacamole to be made fresh and be a little more "authentic" (for lack of a better word) but it wasn't bad. Still had good flavor. Just expected more for the price and for it not to just be piled on a plate? I got the enchiladas. They were pretty good. Beans weren't really refried but still good. I added tapatio to really amp up the dish. For the margaritas, they were ok. I'd say the skinny is worth it. The others are mostly sweetened. For service, our waiter was rushed the whole time. This is a great spot if you're in the mood for some Mexican food and drinks! I love how they offer drinks such as Horchata since it's my favorite! The combo plate consists of one enchilada, one taco, and one chalupa. With a side of refried beans, Spanish rice , salsa, and sour cream. The beans were cool, and the cheese wasn't melted. The Taco, which I ordered with ground beef, was good. The enchilada was also cool, and the flavor was lacking. It was the salsa that gave it flavor. The shell of the chalupa was thick. Rip off!! I go here often and they never did this. But, I ordered a Don Julio margarita with strawberry. They charged me for a top shelf margarita which cost $18 with an additional $16 for don julio which comes out to $34 FOR ONE DRINK! Basically you're getting charged $18 (top shelf price) for triple sec, sweet and sour, and strawberry purée (no alcohol) $16 for a shot of Don Julio added to your drink. AND there was NO GRAND MARNIER FLOAT!! As a bartender myself this makes absolutely no sense!!! BEWARE they're ripping you off if you order a premium tequila margarita!! Better off just ordering a shot of tequila and calling it a day. At least educate your guests on pricing. Before they get a bill for $100 for three margaritas... I do love the decors and slight feel of Mexico in this restaurant, but the food can be a hit or miss. Can't go wrong with the tasty Mushroom Skillet, but was a little disappointed with the Fish Ceviche, as the lime juice was very over powering, which made the dish very tangy, and the fish tasted like tilapia. The Birria Tacos were okay and it's served with rice and refried beans. The service was good and food came out quick considering it was pretty busy when we got there. Their take out business is solid though, and the wait times are considerably quick given how crowded they can look inside. Unfortunately, I keep forgetting to take pictures of my food to share with you folks! But let me tell you, everything I have tried so far has been delicious! This last time, I got their California Burrito. It comes with a nice helping of Mexican rice and beans. Both options are tasty, but this day I went with the frijoles. I thought I was hungry, but all things considered, I only ate 2/3 of my plate. It's a testament to how generous the helpings are! I was more than satisfied. The burrito was really good. The steak was nicely well done, but not tough or dry at all. It was gently tender and packed with flavor. The other fillings served to be a good compliment, balancing out the burrito on its own, and the sides offering a good palate cleanser. The mushroom skillet was very tasty and cheesy I'm glad they don't skim on the cheese. I don't like beans so I ordered a chimichanga with no beans and no rice it is an additional charge to sub it for salad. Their salad is very good! The chimichanga was ok, I got shredded beef and I didn't like it. I should have got another meat. My boyfriend ordered the Mexico burrito and he said it was good, pretty basic. Parking lot is a bit small and a bit tight. Customer service is very good. The woman who waited on our table was really nice and offered to make a new chimichanga because they put beans in the one they brought out. Their horchata is very big! While eating Hawaiian food at Halena's, a friend said, "If you like Mexican food, Mexico Restaurant across the street is really good." When I went there for lunch, it was filled with the military in uniform, many of which were Mexican. I then knew I was in the right place. Their food is tasty, even the refried beans and Spanish rice. They have a good selection of authentic Mexican dishes at reasonable prices. I also enjoy their large blended margaritas. While I've tried a variety of their dishes, I keep ordering their Carnitas with flour tortias. After they slow roast the pork, they grill it till it's crispy when served. Service was great. Margarita tasted like slushy water, we had to keep licking the salted rim to taste anything,. I asked about my favorite, Menudo Soup, the waiter said it was good, when it arrived, it looked good, especially with the fresh sides, onions, cilantro, lime, oregano, etc... but one bite, it was sooooo, soooo salty that all you could taste was salt. you couldn't even taste the menudo, the flavor of the rich broth, all you could taste was the salt, salt and salt. I told the waiter and he said he would tell the " chef" , I doubt there is a Chef in that cocina! This place was a pleasant surprise. I relocated to Hawaii almost 15 months ago from California and have been searching for authentic Mexican food. This is the best that I have found so far and it's pretty darn good. The carne asada burrito plate was a generous portion and the beef was seasoned well. The rice and beans were full of flavor. The shrimp ceviche was just okay, it was not cold and lacked flavor. I would not order that again. The tamale was different from what i've had the masa was like bread and thick and crumbly , never had a tamale like that. The masa had a smokey flavor to it which i found pretty good. It had generous amounts of pork inside and the rice and beans were flavorful as well. I enjoyed it. The other dish ordered was a wet burrito choice of meat was carne asada and it comes with a salad on the side . The sauce lacked flavor and tasted kind of bland . The margaritas are very strong! This was one of our go-to restaurants in the Kalihi area. Food was usually delicious, as is the service. I recently tried to place a take-out order. I called the restaurant numerous times, but no one answered the phone. I went down to the restaurant to place my order, and it was really loud. They probably didn't hear the phone. Received my order, my usual salad. The shell was really chewy, like it was fried at a low temp or it was sitting around for a while. I'm hoping it was just an off day. On Taco Tuesday they had $5 margaritas, now $8. $5-16 shots of tequila out of a $15 bottle brought them back $80. They weren't happy with that. We were seated right away. My two tacos were simple and delicious. My son ordered combo 3 which was abundant. It came with a taco, chalupa and chilada. The carnitas were better than the verde! Had crispy ends to the carnitas and super flavorful. It was topped off with fresh cilantro and onions. -It added great texture and we made it into a little taco! We made about 8 tacos from that plate. It's definitely big portions so you'll have plenty of left over! The chili verde has great big chunks and it was smothered with lots of cheese on top.
