Went for dinner and the parking lot was overflowing, they had a party going on and even with the parking lot being full we got seated right away. Service wasn't as good as normal, the bus person I I guess could have helped instead of just standing around with the waiter being so busy, which made the service very slow at least they could check on the tables, we were there almost 1/2 hour and no one came to check on the table for water or anything else? We were ready to leave, it has never been this bad on service all the times we dined there. Finally our meals arrived I ordered the special shredded beef burrito which was good as before, which is huge and filling. My wife ordered the veggie regular burrito which after eating about half because it is small compared to the specialty burritos, found out it wasn't a vegetarian burritos, but also a shredded beef burritos. We went early hoping to avoid the rush, but I guess everyone else had the same idea. Sorry no pictures due to this page will not allow me to update any more pictures.
The food here is terrible. It is bland and inauthentic. My wife got a burrito. It was supposed to have guacamole but i dissected the burrito and found a tiny smear of green in one tiny area of the burrito. The burrito had no flavor to it and was super mushy. The pozole was also very bland. The food took almost thirty minutes to get to our table after ordering it. Our mango margaritas didn't taste like mango-they tasted like bottom shelf tequila. We were starving when we got there and left a good amount of food on the plate. Their bathroom was really dirty. There was literal poop on the baby changing table which was cloth and is very unhygienic. Im from california and I miss good mexican food now that I live in Hawaii. I would never recommend this restaurant no matter how nice the staff are.
Went on a weekday with my mom, parking lot was full. We got seated quickly and water was bought to the table. The waiter asked if we had any questions. I ordered the lunch special mini super chaparros burrito with steak and the waiter asked if I wanted it wet. I asked him if it was good, he said yes, he likes it with the red sauce. So I told him I'll try that and got the daily margarita special which was lime. I got it blended and with lihing powder which was good. Burrito was filling and there was nothing mini about that burrito. Just wish there was a bigger parking lot for the restaurant. I know there's some street parking, but sometimes it's already taken depending what time you go.
There was a small wait when we came but it was less than 10 mins. Parking is also quite limited but there's a lot of street/metered parking. The ambiance is really nice, i like their decor and the lighting wasn't too dim or too bright. Music volume was just right. Now the food... just dumbfounded by how good it was. It's one of the few Mexican restaurants that taste authentic. The chipotle steak chingalinga was such a perfect appetizer with the provided sauce! The steak was tender for all dishes. The salsa, guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo were all amazing! This restaurant gives you a taste of their culture and all the servers were accommodating and gave recommendations!
Our friend suggested this place for lunch so we met her. She did tell us that parking was limited so go early. She wasn't joking, we arrived 5 minutes before they opened and parking was full. No worries it was a Sunday so street parking was available. That was the downside, otherwise our experience otherwise was great!! Enjoyed everything!
We had the enchiladas suizas w/rice &' beans , huevos rancheros w/ rice &' beans. &' a kids cheese quesadilla with rice. Drinks we had horchata &' Coke products. Horchata was super flavorful, very good! Enchiladas were good as well but I got chicken &' it was a little hard to cut through. Rice was fluffy but not to much flavor and the beans were super watery with zero flavor as well. The huevos rancheros were okay the were plated on top of a tostada but the rancheros was just the salsa they give you with chips.... Customer service was amazing they were super short staffed but the chef actually came out to help wait tables super nice as well, as for the ambiance you get the normal Mexican restaurant style! I would recommend this place if you're in the area just try different things. Parking also is super limited &' small!
"Twelfth man on the deal team, last to know". That's me. A decent "Mexican" spot that I've driven by hundreds of times. First, being Hawaii, decent means not using pasta sauce to replace pico, not using shredded processed cheese, and not using refried beans from a can. Don't think of comparing this to that "authentic ethnic" spot in LA or the over border drunken stint in TJ. All the requisites from tortas, burritos, tacos, enchiladas, fajitas, sopas including pozole and menudo, on offer. Complimentary C&S, just OK. Kinda soggy chips and the watery salsa doesn't much depth despite being fire roasted and not much spice heat. No complaints on the basic rice and refried beans that accompanied the large, stuffed trio of chicken empanadas (usually comes with two, add an additional for $5). Flavorful enough but not that complex mole. They are finished off with some sour cream, raw onions and crumbled cotija. Solid. Fast, friendly service with servers who seem to know their regulars well. Fair pricing with almost everything sub $30. It is what it is. Not bad for Hawaii and works to scratch the Mexican itch.
All Mexican restaurants are NOT the same! We dined at Los Chaparros on Veretania Street and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Mario, the owner of the restaurant, was our server and was engaging, friendly, and helpful. The salsa and home made chips were a terrific teaser before dinner. The chips were crispy and delicious, not greasy at all! And the salsa was perfectly seasoned with a little hot to spice it up. I had the chicken mole plate, which comes with corn or flour tortillas, refried beans, rice and a small fresh salad. ONO! And quite a large serving, too much for me to finish. My significant other had the enchilada plate, which was delicious too. The enchiladas were like open tacos, with all the steak and fixings on top of the shell. Yum! And dessert was the banana flautas, which were like hot banana lumpia, though NOT greasy, but light, dusted with cinnamon and sugar and a caramel sauce and a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream. Perfect! And you can BYOB! We'll definitely be back to try other interesting offerings on the menu!
I must have Los my mind because I can't believe I haven't done a review for Los Chaparros yet. This place is one of our all-time favorites. We've been frequenting this owner-operated, small-business for years. And by years, I mean decades. This neighborhood joint has survived for 20 years! That says something... From casual weekday lunches, to quiet dinner dates, to lively get togethers with friends, we've enjoyed many meals at Los Chaparros, and they've never let us down. Service is warm and welcoming with long-time staff that remember your name and greet you like you are visiting their home. The owner Mario is often serving and bussing tables, too. His graciousness extends to his menu where he shares some of his cherished family recipes including a lip-smacking mole. The menu also features some Tex-Mex inspired dishes like quesadillas and tortas. There is something for everyone! This is especially true since I'm a pescatarian and my husband is an everything-tarian. We always share a side salad with the chipotle ranch dressing. And we change it up and have enjoyed everything for their enchiladas to burritos to chimichangas to tacos. All are delicious! Lots of vegetarian and pescatarian options for me. Lots of beef options for the hubby. The green chile soup is a bowl full of flavor and comfort. They have combos where you can select your entree and have a soup, salad, or rice and beans making it easy for you to customize your meal to your liking or mood. They also make a marvelous margarita and offer some good beer options that pair well with their dishes. The parking lot isn't big but there is street parking nearby. And people do a lot of take out too, although we never have. We prefer enjoying the food in the homeyness of the restaurant. Bright colored walls featuring pictures of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Booth and table options accommodate small and large parties. There are so many reasons we keep coming back to this place. There are so many things on the menu we haven't even tried, even after all these years of patronage. With this review I congratulate Los Chaparros on their 20th anniversary and thank them for serving us great food with such care for so many years. Cheers to many, many more!!
My partner and I was really craving for Mexican food and had a spot in mind at first. However, that spot sold out of the item(s) we wanted to try so we ended up searching for Mexican food last minute. We found los chapparos and made our way there. The parking situation is a bit rough, there are very limited parking lot space in front of the establishment but it was already fully occupied. We had to drive around a couple of times in the area to find a street parking spot. We made our way to the establishment and were quickly seated. The waiter was very enthusiastic and friendly, engaging with every table he had. They have a pretty expansive menu so I struggled a bit to decide on what to order. I eventually inquired and the waiter recommended the LC fiesta burrito which I got and my partner got the combo plate with a quesadilla and enchilada, both with carnitas. He meant to order carne asada but he "didn't want my help" smh. The dishes took a WHILE to come out, but we had chips and salsa to keep up occupied. My burrito was good, the proteins were flavorful and the steak wasn't too tough. I do feel like the burrito size was a bit lacking for its price and I usually like to eat my burrito with plenty of salsa which wasn't provided. My partner's combo plate was good, nothing blew our minds but it was a good meal. I do feel like his order would've been perfect if he got the actual protein he wanted (carne asada). We ended the meal with churros, it was also good and a bit excessive in sugar which we had to shake off. I feel like there should've been more ice cream as it was the perfect pair for churros but there was only a tiny amount of ice cream (a FULL scoop would've been perfect). I'm not super sure if we would come back, nothing was bad but nothing was worth knocking my top Mexican spots off its feet.
This place has probably the best Mexican food on island! I haven't been here in years since the parking is usually really bad, however, we went later in the night and it was a great time to go. The place had a great colorful atmosphere and we were given chips and salsa once we sat down. Their salsa is so tasty and the chips were fresh and crisp. I ordered the Enchilada del Bajio which came with a red sauce, grilled onions, and fried potatoes on top. As well as rice and beans on the side. It was so flavorful and I was able to get two different types of meat which was nice. Everything was so yummy and we left feeling full. Another thing to remember is that they charge a 3% fee on credit cards, so I recommend paying in cash. They will automatically apply the 3% fee on your bill, so just make sure to notify your waiter that you would like to pay in cash and they will remove the fee for you.
La Chaparrals is definitely one of our go to places near Waikiki. Finally tried the steak Chiliques today. It's a monster thank goodness Kar is helping Services always with a smile

I've been driving past Los Chaparros for years but never had the opportunity to stop in. After hearing a lot of great things about their food and reading all the great reviews, I finally gave it a try. I ordered the combination plate with a chimichanga and enchilada. The food came out nice and hot, and everything was tasty and satisfying. The service was great, too, which made for an enjoyable first visit. One thing I noticed was how many customers seemed to be regulars. To me, that's always a good sign when visiting a local restaurant. It was nice to finally check this place out, and I can see why it has built up a loyal following. Glad I finally stopped in! read more

Reasonable food. Chicken chimichanga came with sour cream and guacamole and chips and salsa. Also had beans and rice. Best Mexican food I've had on Oahu. Comparable to West Coast Mexican food. read more
Walking in is the unnoticeable ambiance of Mexico. So you know what kind of food is served here. Came just in time (1:00 pm) when the lunch crowd was leaving and the limited parking emptied out. Food is always good except today. The rice was good but the beans was little runny. Complimentary chips and salsa is always welcome once you sit down. The salsa changed color since the last time I came here. It's a dark color instead of red tomatoes with round onion and cilantro. Chile relleno is good. Don't let my photo fool you. Sorry, I mixed my rice and beans together before I took the photo. Hoping the beans will be less runny. Chimichanga was nice and crispy with same runny beans. My lunch partner ordered it with ground beef instead of the usual shredded beef, but you have a choice. My lunch partner likes ground beef instead of the regular pull meats. This is the only place that we found that has ground beef in most of their dishes. They have weekdays lunch special for certain dishes which includes you choice of soft drinks. Pros: Good food. Good friendly service. Cons: The beans were runny and the salsa was not fresh. Small parking lot. Hard to turn around and had back out of the parking lot. Some places puts meat in there Chile relleno. They don't. Would I return? Yes. I it's one of my go to places. read more

Friendly staff and convenient location, but flavor and parking are lacking. Only six stalls out front, so pickup usually means one person stays in the car while the other runs in. We ordered two combo plates (carnitas burrito, chicken quesadilla, taquitos, and chicken burrito--all rice) plus a small salsa. Portions fed 3 adults and a toddler, but food was pretty bland. Taquitos and rice lacked flavor, even with salsa. Chicken quesadilla was the best item. Nice people, but I'd drive further for better taste and easier parking. read more
This is one of my husband's favorite MEXICAN RESTAURANT ! He's been coming here for many years. Now, my daughter and I have grown to like this restaurant as well. When you first walk in, you'll know that it is an authentic Mexican Restaurant. The atmosphere, the decor and the ambiance sets the mood! As you walk in, you are immediately greeted by the host and servers who are very friendly and full of energy! Once you are seated, a complimentary basket of freshly fried tortilla chips and salsa are placed on the table for all to enjoy. It was a delicious appetizer to start our meal. I ordered the 2 choice Combination Plate which came with rice and beans. I decided to get the: Steak burrito + Shredded Beef Enchilada. Everything on my plate was very delicious! I really enjoyed it. The portion was very generous too. My husband and daughter enjoyed their meal as well. So if you are craving good authentic Mexican food, go and check out Los Chapparros on Beretania. This is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants on Oahu. I like the colorful ambiance and welcoming vibes. We were greeted and seated right away. They have booths and tables. This time I wanted to try something different so we went with the table. We ordered ceviche, 1 choice beef burrito with beans and rice, and 1 choice green sauce enchilada with pozole. It was the first time I tried their Ceviche. It was served with what I think was mayo and it was sweet, but I prefer more salty and savory flavor. The entrees were delicious and I was very happy with the pozole! I would recommend the enchiladas, pozole, and tamales. read more
Supremo... After a long day and night market that I made the choice to wait in the long line for matcha all other food options were basically sold out lo!!! What I do love is there's lots of options to choose from and Los Champarros has been on my list for quite some time and the reason for it is the parking. The one direction lot is painfully tiny and if it's full finding street parking is just as painful on this busy street and in this night was no different as they had just one single stall. Feeling lucky it was my time and I embraced it and ordered my food to go. Taco Supremo was much choice as for what it describes it's almost like a bowl and a veggie was my choice that I'm so ready for. The vibe in this cozy restaurant is nice and simple as it is a bit dated but very nice and clean with a slight touch of tasteful decor and the music wasn't blaring to a point that you can't hear yourself, staff is very polite and friendly being so helpful as a few checked on me if I'd been helped while I wait for my take out is very awesome. "Miss Irene your order is ready" very nice and not a long wait at all took it home and it didn't disappoint though the veggies seem to be cooked to death or was probably frozen as it was all limp and had no color in it and the variety is quite interesting and the load on top of the tortilla is insane if you can see the tortilla under it all as I basically ate it like a salad. Love that it came with chips and salsa and it hat a bit of heat to it and looks house made. I'd probably ask for the tortilla on the side next time as it got destroyed by the toppings and was basically useless as a vessel but a lovely filling meal that satisfied my cravings. Dinner in Honolulu, Hawaii... Our dinner group had already taken Father Rizal to have Korean, Chinese, Thai and Japanese cuisine... How about Mexican food next? Luckily, the group agreed and I suggested Los Chaparros Mexican Restaurant because I had never been there before. My dentist knew where to park (on Beretania Street) because the small, free lot in front of the restaurant was full. I called to make a reservation, but was unsuccessful. We went a little after opening time to beat the crowd and get a table. Service was cheerful and efficient. The interior was festive and had colorful decor. The atmosphere was energetic in a dimly lit environment. I got the Taco Supremo with shrimp... without jalapeños. It was still a bit spicy for me... and filling, so I took half home. The flour tortilla held up well, the veggies were fresh, and the shrimp were plump and firm! Yum! I'm glad that I finally got a chance to dine at this old school establishment! I'd go again! Literally one of my favorite restaurants on island! I go crazy when people say "tHeRe's No gOoD MexIcAn on O'ahu" this place is such a gem. This place is hidden close to Waikīkī, with a small parking lot. I recommend to walk if possibly due to limited parking spaces. We got there at around 6:30 pm and there was around a 30 minute wait. It went by pretty quickly and they come out to call on you. We got sat down and had free chips and salsa (was charged for 50 cents on the bill). The chips were yummy and perfectly spicy salsa. I ordered a guava margarita for about $10.50 since there was a sale and we also got a strawberry margarita. My margarita did not really have alcohol in it, as I didn't taste or feel any alcohol, maybe a 1/2 shot worth in the drink. I also got a 2 plate combo with chicken enchiladas with green sauce and taquitos with shredded beef. I also got rice and beans. This was delicious. I loved the flavors and it was a perfect amount of food. Decent price as well! Our server was also really nice and attentive, and had nice decor inside. Overall I would return again when I want Mexican food! I've tried other mexican restaurants in Honolulu and this is my favorite one so far when it comes to the food. read more

I would give this place 5 stars for the food it's just the parking lot is small with just 6 stalls so I gave it a 4 star. The combination plate hits the spot if you're hungry BUT definitely save room for the Bananas Flauta it's the bomb! The restaurant is busy but service is quick and well timed. read more

As a Mexican living in Hawai this is not a good place for the price they charge. It could be way better. There food it's reheated and not authentic at all. Beer it's hot . Michelada was ok but not cold Enough. The appetizer was good . Customer service was good however food not match the price. read more
After being away from SoCal for over a week, my husband and I were craving some Mexican food and weren't expecting to find many options. This place was recommended by my mom, who visited Honolulu over 10 years ago, and we didn't have high expectations but we wanted to give it a shot. Our server was so cheerful and welcoming and to our delight, the food was fantastic, even by Los Angeles standards! The rice, the rice, I am very picky about my rice at any Mexican restaurant and wow, their rice was surprisingly better than most I've had in LA. My husband loved his carnitas chimichanga (not common in LA), along with a shredded beef hard shell taco. He swapped the usual rice and beans for a bowl of red pork posole, which he thought was good. The salsa had a nice kick to it too! I played it safe with the shredded chicken green enchilada (green was said to be spicy, red mild) and a side of shredded beef taquitos, both were delicious! The enchilada had a good level of heat which is what I was looking for. I loved the cotija cheese on top, very authentic. If you're in Honolulu and craving Mexican food, I highly recommend this spot. We'll definitely be back when we visit the Island again! read more

Probably the Mexican food you can get on this side of the island. The food is hot and fresh and all well seasoned. I had a beef enchilada and a steak chimichanga combo platter with a side of menudo but next time I'm absolutely trying something new from their menu! The menudo was soo good, I would definitely get extra limes. The churros were crispy on the outside and so warm and fluffy inside, the vanilla ice cream they used was especially creamy and flavorful too! To top it off, they give a free churro dessert of a smaller portion than the one pictured (this is a regular order) for birthdays while also putting a sombrero on you and singing. The service is always super friendly and excellent, and they take great care of you even on the busiest nights. All of these people work hard to make the experience enjoyable and I've not been disappointed yet. It also certainly helps that their strawberry margaritas (so good with a tajin rim) are quite strong to me. Would definitely recommend and I'll for sure be stopping by more often :) read more

While parking can be tough since their lot is a bit small and quickly crowded, Los Chaparros is worth the trip. We have been a few times to takeout and dine in. While it is still yummy to takeout, we have enjoyed it more when we dine in. The restaurant is lively and enjoyable to be at. It feels a bit like being in someone's home! They give you chips and salsa when you takeout and when you dine in. The chips taste fresh and the salsa has a darker flavor than others. The service is typically quick and they are always friendly. We got three super chaparros burritos with green sauce, green and red sauce, and no sauce. We also got an LC Serrano Melt. The super chaparros burrito is very filling and tasty. The sauces make it look even bigger and can add another dimension of flavor. The melt was also quite big and good. We will definitely be back! read more

The burritos hold up well on the ride home, still warm, well-wrapped, and packed with flavor. The steak is tender with a smoky char, while the ground beef is juicy and well-seasoned. Each comes loaded with fluffy rice, savory black beans, melty cheese, fresh pico de gallo, and a light touch of crema. Everything stays balanced, never soggy or bland.
