Great taco stand! I first came across this place a month ago. I was so happy to find an authentic Mexican food cart so close by. I've tried the tacos and burritos a few times and it's always delicious. My favorite is the carnitas but I usually get 3 tacos. One of each- carnitas, carne, and pollo. Topped with some tasty pico de gallo and guacamole. They also offer a variety of hot sauces. I like the tapatio the best. hours are limited to Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday nights. 1-person food truck opposite Ala Moans Hotel. Nice, hard-working guy, tacos and burritos freshly made, good assortment of toppings.

My family and I were staying at the hotel across and were dying of hunger. We walked across the street from our hotel to get some water from the liquor and smelled the tacos from the truck. We just had to stop by and try it out. Our first meal in Hawaii and it's safe to say... as a fellow member of the Mexican community...we approve these tacos. Was biking back from the beach and saw no line so I thought to check the menu out. Said hi, how are you doing and also asked if he's open yet. To which responded yes. I asked about the menu and he wasn't helpful at all. He actually continued to prep and set himself up without gloves and his hands visibly unclean. Tried to asked once again what are they known for, to which he responded, "everything". I booked and will never go back there. Used to tell people to check them out cause I see lines all the time, but that has come to an end. The biggest gripe according to other Yelpers is the wait time. I'd suggest coming at opening. I've never had these wait times described here at those times. First off the owner is amazing. He stopped his setup to help push someone's car into a parking spot. Three of us were helping push the car, when we neared the end we noticed that the brake lights were on. We were wondering why it was so difficult, hah! Other than that he was very pleasant and polite. The burrito is the best bang for the buck, yes it's $11, but we live in Hawaii. Comparable locations on Island in terms of just the price range from $9-15. I also hail originally from the Bay (La Vic's and Iguana's!), lived in the Central Valley, and stayed extensively in San Diego, but the food is absolutely comparable to them. The prices are near the same too, but once again you're in Hawaii. Everything he makes is fresh from the salsa and cilantro to the entrees itself. I absolutely loved the food itself; the carne asada was seasoned well, the cheese and guac blended very well and was plentiful, and the fresh salsa and cilantro was amazing. He only has the stand up half the week and is a one man wrecking crew, I give him massive credit for that. I will always support my small businesses and will support this guy for the time I'm here. When I was up in California nothing was better than grabbing a snack after school from a good old taco truck. This is the next best thing in Hawaii! Authentic taste, guy makes his own salsas and got lots of toppings and hot sauces to choose from. This place is literally just a cart hooked up to his truck tho with limited seating, two picnic tables. I ordered and he went to work, taking tortilla's and putting them on a small plancha grill, heating up the steak from another drawer in the cart. Was like magic with tacos coming out of a small hat. man, were they good! Carne asada always, topped it with some cilantro, onions, salsa. Just like a Mexican taco truck back in California. At $11 for 3 carne asada tacos it seems a tad bit pricey but with Hawaii's limited Mexican selection, where else are you going to go? read more

I love small ethnic street food stands like this where you feel the heart beat of immigrant workers showcasing their ethnic food culture. The smell, the aroma, the sweat, the smell from burning kerosene and sound from the tiny power generator, the flickering of light, the hard work of genuine people just working hard to support a family. The appreciation and smile on their faces when you try to speak their language. The taco was delicious with handmade taco, salsa fresca, cilantro, diced onion, and different kinds of salsa picante and fresh squeezed lime juice that will explode in your month. Oscar is everything you want from a taco cart; authentic, personable, and ¡Muy excelente! Posted up on Atkinson in a tiny cart with handmade salsas and made-to order tacos, burritos, and quesadillas. Can get backed up a bit and as with all fresh-made food, sometimes runs out. Pollo was my favorite, which I found out with the taco varieties, but now I usually stick to Burritos which are heartier! The food was pretty good, but I think with my San Diego mexican food standards it's hard to compare. I had the carne asada, and it was pretty good. For the tacos alone, I'd give it at a 3. Not bad, not great. I'd go again BUT... ...the wait was ridiculous. I understand he's one guy in a little truck, but something needs to be done if he wants more customers. There were only 4 in front of me, yet I had to wait a full hour. I'm not mad, I'm just saying he needs to do something about the production speed. He was straight hustling for that full hour, so the wait wasn't long because he was slacking or anything. As for writing professionally on Yelp, I believe Yelp is a community constructed of just that, the community. Not everyone will be exalted food critics who studied "new busy businesses." In fact, I'd bet that most won't be. There will be locals, foreigners, professionals, people chancing a new place, regular customers, and others that love to express their own personal opinion. As a small, new "busy business," I suggest that you (at the very least) consider all constructive criticism. I mentioned this in the review: I didn't hate your tacos. Unfortunately, my Yelp rating encompasses more than just the food, and the order-to-service turnaround time also plays a huge factor (among others). This place is so small, it isn't a food truck, it is a food cart. It is parked on the street right outside a little strip mall on Atkinson. We parked our car in front of the liquor store in the strip mall, and bought our tacos from the cart and a couple of cokes from the liquor store. There is no place to eat, so we sat in our car and wolfed down the tacos. The steak was better than the pork. The homemade pico de gallo was great. The salsa was also wonderful. Definitely homemade with a pride of ownership. They have onions, cilantro, jalapeno, and other condiments you can add. read more

I'll be completely honest, I don't know exactly what true authentic Mexican food tastes like BUT THESE TACOS DA BOMB. I was moved by not only the food but by watching the owner work so hard to create these delicious masterpieces and serve everyone with a friendly smile and hospitable spirit really made me wanna TACO bout it. Nice guy with a small food cart who does it all by himself. He worked really hard and got our huge order done quickly! My family bought one or two of almost every item on the menu. So here's the summary on my experience with Mayita's. I'll lead with the fact that overall it was great and I would easily come here again. Went at about 7pm on a Tuesday, only one person ahead of us and while there for about 30 mins (waiting on food/eating) we only saw the line to order stack up to about 2-3 people at a time. The Good: 1) The food especially the carne asada tacos were very tasty. I was born and raised in LA and spent a year in SD trying as many taco places as possible and also going to Tijuana many times to try famous and obscure taco places. The tacos here are quality, enough said. 2) Tacos are very traditional street tacos. Just the meat filling and the cilantro/onion toppings. Nothing fancy, simplicity in the best way possible. 3) The salsas are excellent. The red one in the large stone bowl is amazing. Not particularly spicy but an excellent balance of spice and Mexican flavor. 4) I have an appreciation for what this guy does. This place is literally a cart which can fit strictly one person to cook/serve. Everything seems to be homemade with the exception of the tortillas at least based on the feel in my hand and texture in my mouth. The Negatives: 1) Prices are higher than I'm used to. Coming from CA I'm used to street tacos costing about $2-$3 . These are street tacos so the type an average human can eat within 3-4 bites. An individual taco here is $5 which is pretty insane to me but I can cut some slack since it's one guy attending the grill and food prepping but to me this is not the norm. But if you get the 3 taco deal it's $11 which brings the cost down to about $3.67. I also had what I would consider a small Tostada which costed $8. Again, in my book should've only cost about $5.50-$6.50 2) The wait. Although there was only one person's order in front of us it still took about 12 minutes to get our food. So if three people are in front of you you'll probably be waiting about 30 minutes for your food. That's the downside of this operation being a one man show. So personally, if I saw 3-4 people in front of me waiting I'd probably dip out and go somewhere else. The tacos here are good but not worth waiting 30 minutes in a mildly sketchy/small parking lot. read more

can I give a place 10 stars? The food is amazing. I live in California which is home of hands-down the best Mexican anywhere north of the border. We tried the carne asada burritos. You absolutely must must must get the red salsa. The veggies are fire roasted which is how I make my salsa so while it's not spicy the flavor is amazing.... if you like spice add a little bit of the green salsa for heat. looks like new hours are Tuesday through Saturday instead of Monday through Friday because we almost walked right by it since we thought they weren't going to be open tonight. I saw some other reviews mentioning the prices. Overall food prices in Hawaii are much more expensive than anywhere else I've ever been on vacation so compared to grocery store prices being about 30% higher I feel like the prices were right in line with a 30% price increase. Seriously great burrito, just know that it is different from California burritos there was no rice in it and they put lettuce instead. read more
