Sad,sad, sad Face. . When I opened my takeout container was was shocked. Where's my two pasteles??? I scraped the rice and saw what looked like one pastele or was it one pastele split in two. I've been coming here for years. This didn't look right. I've always had the pasteles on top of the rice and not buried. See my picture. The taste was also lacking. The prices have risen that I understand, but what you get for $24 Is not worth it Time to look for a another pastele vendor. Enjoy.

Went back after a few years. The Pastele Shop is known by locals for their Puerto Rican version of pasteles - made from masa with green bananas ( not sure what else ) pork, spices, and steamedin banana leaves. I've been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for 1.5+ years now, but I've made the Flexatarian move and ate their Loco Moco Pastele Plate: consisting of Gandule Rice (an option), Pastele Stew, two over easy eggs, and one Pastele. It was excellent, just a bit spicy. Eggs were over hard - I like it soft ( there is a joke but I won't go there. My fault as I waited till I got home. It was enough to feed two but I finished it all in one sitting. Parking stalls are available in a small lot for the businesses in this building...a market ananother (?) business. Pink building at the corner of North School Street and Gulick.

My coworkers and I ordered takeout for lunch. We called in our order, the worker who took our call was very friendly and helpful. When we got to The Pastele Shop, our takeout orders were ready to go. The staff were very friendly and helpful when we were splitting up the payment for the orders. The pricing of their plates is a little pricey but I think it was worth it. The ambiance is an old school mom and pop store. It was a very welcoming place. The parking lot is small and a little narrow. But at least there's some stalls compared to most eateries along School Street. The food was very tasty. I enjoyed my Spicy Pastele and my Gandule Rice. I'll definitely will order food from there again.

It's located on Gulick, with parking in the front. It's a small shop, but the food was so good! The food portions for the price were definitely worth it. I would definitely return. I really loved their pastel and the pastel stew plate. They were too delicious!

Man I wish I got a picture of the food we ordered. I love bacalao salad and there's is one of my favorites!!! The Spanish rice with meat so Ono too! I usually get the plate with stew, pasteles, Spanish rice and bacalao salad. Omg so so so yum! Don't forget the side mac salad... or maybe 2 because I'm telling you it's the best combination. The service here is quick and the cashiers are always so nice, they're such a small local business you can feel the aloha here. It's a small shop with amazing Puerto Rican food. No place to dine in, it's just take out only.

Another Family own business located at the corner of Gulick and School St. Long time ago I use to live nearby The Pastele Shop so I use to come here a lot . We're talking about the mid 90's so at least 30 years ago . Good to see that there still in business and thriving. If you haven't had the Pastele Shop pastele before you need to check them out . Hands down they have the best Pastele in town . They also have Pastele lumpia along with Panadesa turnover . The Panadesa turnover is buttery and flaky on the outside filled with there Pastele filling it's one of my favorite. Also you can order their Pastele hot or mild I normally get their hot because it had a little heat in the flavors . Customer service is very friendly and fast once you order before you know it the order is ready . Parking can be a challenge they have 4 stalls right in front of their restaurant . Also they share parking with other businesses in the same building. Support local

I must have been living under a rock, because I only recently found out about this place. It's kind of a hole in the wall joint with no inside seating. It's grab and go. If you love pastele this is the place for you. I didn't get any of their plates, but did try their lumpia. I got a pastele lumpia and two banana lumpias. I enjoyed both varieties. The pastele lumpia was filled with savory pork. The banana lumpia could have used more banana. I could taste the banana, but it was minimal. Both were very greasy, but crispy and delicious.

The plates are the size of a half plate lunch but it's deep. Don't be disappointed, at first I thought oh oh I hope it's enough food for my Dad but it was plenty enough. I even had leftovers. I was surprised. It was so filling. I would recommend the rice and pastele. If you like pastele stew, get in on the side/separate. If you get it in the plate, it smothers the pastele and you won't be able to taste it.

I've never had a pastele before. Based off the pictures, it wasn't really appealing to me nor did it look like what I wanted as my first meal off the plane when I arrived in Hawaii. However, I'm glad that it turned out to be both delicious and filling! The pastele is a pork stuffing inside a green plantain masa and wrapped in banana leaves. I had the #1 on their menu, which included pastele, rice, salad, and a choice of sausage or pastele stew; we opted to try the stew. Each item was flavorful and tasted fresh. Everything complimented each of the other items' flavors and went together really well!

I guess I'm the first to review this truck because I couldn't find any other posting on Yelp: Pastele stew - 4 stars - For $7.50 plus 20 cents tax (yes, this truck is one of the few that the tax is not included in their price) it pretty much tasted like the stew I make, but they had more ingredients in it. I like how they blended in cabbage, olives,. chunks of tomatoes and some other spices other than your basic carrot, potato, onion and celery in it. They gave a pretty big serving with two scoops of rice and watercress salad. Pastele - 3 stars - For $4 you can order the pastele ala carte. It's something I haven't eaten before, so I can't say if it's better or worse than other places, but it was something different to try - if you like spicy, it has a spicy after-bite to it. Goes well with the stew. My friend ordered the taco, and he said it was ok. However, I can't rate it since I didn't try it. Service - 5 stars - the man and woman were very friendly and answered my questions on what a pastele is, but more so because I didn't know what a pastele was or tasted like, he gave me a free sample to try, which is something not many lunch trucks would do. They also sell tacos and burritos, but I have to go back to try those too before being a fan of the truck.

I'm gonna be honest and say that this is the best Pastele place I've been to on the island…read more I can't say that i can compare it to an actual sit down puerto rican restaurant, since I'm not familiar with many around the island, but in comparison to all the Pastele trucks and stops Ive been to around the island, this one takes the cake! I've been to stops along the windward side, while heading down toward Koolau. There used to be (not sure if its still there) Pastele stops along the road. One of the guys that used to serve Pastele along with poke had decent Pastele, but his business was way sketchy. The dude would always "accidentally" miscount the money. He also inaccurately counted up the total of your order in his head. Not to mention his erasable white board was unreadable which made the prices even harder to determine. So don't go to that guy! Instead go to Kai's. Great prices (you don't have to worry about getting ripped off) and their Pastele ingredients are unique in texture. I'm really not even sure if they were made out of the traditional banana base. But i don't really care because they were just so awesome! They offer a a few different types Pastele with different types of meat all at different spice levels. Also several other peurto rican dishes which i still have yet to try are available. Next time I'm getting the seafood Pastele. I'm so bummed because they sold out the last time. I'm a huge fan of seafood and Pastele so when i saw it on the menu i just thought it was the coolest mix. (if you've never had poke with your Pastele you should def. give it a try)

Best of all, we get to try so many new delicious local bites! We now look forward to our Thursday dinners! A few weeks ago we had already ordered our dinner at a couple other booths, but while waiting for our meals to be prepared, we took another lap around to plan for our next week's meal haha. I was excited to see a Puerto Rican food truck! It had been so long since we've had Puerto Rican; I was counting the days until we came back lol. I placed my order for the Tripleta sandwich and we took our stroll while waiting for our meal. I asked for no potato stix on my sandwich; personal preference, but I definitely know a lot of people who would've enjoyed the added crunch! It was ready just as we returned about 8 minutes later. Each bite was juicy, perfectly seasoned, and fresh. The bread was divine and soft, the best pair to the symphony of meats and veggies. I will definitely be trying the plantains next time! Along with more of their menu; everything sounds so yummers! For the meat sandwich lovers; the tripleta does not disappoint!!
