Food is pretty good but the service left a horrible impression. Wish I could take back my tip. We visited this restaurant expecting a casual dining experience, similar to what you'd find in a bakery or café, where you order at the counter and you can choose to sit down at one of the tables with your food or grab and go. The setup seemed to support this, with a cashier at the front, a menu displayed prominently on the main wall, and no server in sight. Plus, the pizza was already made and on display to grab and go. Upon ordering, we noticed several empty tables and decided to sit down to quickly try a bite before the drive home. However, we were quickly approached by one of the cooks (or hidden kitchen staff?), who informed us that the tables were reserved for dine-in customers only and asked us to leave. This was confusing, as it was not apparent that they offered a full dine-in option without a waiter around, and the restaurant was not busy at the time. Plus, how would one fully dine-in if the food isn't even made to order? I would have the cashier (again, there's no waiter) bring me my plate instead of me picking it up from the cashier four steps away after just ordering from them? The enforcement of this policy felt unnecessarily strict and absurd and made for a very unwelcoming and upsetting experience. The Bay Area is not lacking for pizza places. In fact I would argue we have plenty of options unfortunately most of them fall short in the quality, innovation and price point. Hooray for Casa Barotti ! For me it checks all the boxes. They have a daily happy hour from 4-6:30 PM. Seating out front that is on a busy but roomy street / sidewalk location in a nice area of Berkeley and the pizza is top notch. It reminded me of the pizza joints in Rome that had long trays of oblong pizza / focaccia with interesting toppings and high quality ingredients. Happy hour - offers up a nice free platter of olives, hard chunks of Parmesan cheese, some typical twisted crackers and a sample of pizza slices - two smaller pieces per person. Tasty and nice ! We ordered a few more squares of pizza - one w roasted eggplant and olives and the second slices with arugula and aged Parma ham sliced on top. Both had a nicely fluffy and airy focaccia base with a thoughtful selection of fresh and tasty toppings. Two of us ate well and to be eligible for the happy hour we ordered one small glass of beer on tap (an IPA and a Lager) for $4/each...which got us the happy hour deal/platter. All in, figuring $6-7 per square of pizza we spent less than $30 including a tip. My kinda happy hour ! We will definitely be back. Be aware they close at 6:30 PM so not a late night spot. Finally the typical Italian happy hour!! A friend of mine told me about this new place and I was super curious to try it because of her good review. For this reason, my husband and I spent the last Saturday afternoon in Berkeley. We went to the "Maker's Row Artist&Fleas", then we visited the other shopping stores and we went to Casa Barotti at 5pm. The place is like a typical Italian "spizzicheria" where you can see several slices of focaccia or Pizza directly behind a glass. They have too many types that it's really hard to choose, so if you want to try something you have to come between 4-6.30pm and enjoy the aperitivo formula (complimentary pizza e focaccia tasting with glass of wine or beer). Trust me because the food was literally delicious!! I'm a huge fan of Farinata, so I try it and it was really good. They also prepared arancini, scarola, panini etc. For Italian people like me, this place is like a fortune because it brings you at home. We got the focaccia rossa, the focaccia with potato and fontina, the margherita and the san daniele (which I think was just the margherita with prosciutto) and the arancini. Yum loved the potato and fontina. My son loved the margherita which he seamlessly finished. The sliced are pretty big like the size of a half sheet of paper. Wasn't a big fan of the rossa which was just focaccia with tomato sauce. Loved their flavored sodas. We got the pomegranate and the blood orange. They're also organic and super delicious. The arancini we left to eat at home. I honestly wasn't a fan of it. I was expecting it to be crispy but it was just mushy and too cheesy for my taste. They warm up the pizzas and the focaccias but don't do the same for the arancini. Located on the Oakland side of College Ave. Parking isn't too bad to find. It will be street parking. Very clean and professional inside. Though I would say the signage for the different offerings could be more clear. Sometimes I felt it was unclear which item was which. I don't remember seeing a sign for the arancini, which I ended up calling the ball thingies since I couldn't remember at the time what it was called. I love the food here as well as the concept. I've been several times and never disappointed in the quality of the food. The last time my partner and I went we were the only two inside and ordered lasagna and a salad, the salad came out quickly. We waited another thirty minutes before checking on the lasagne - they had forgotten us while we were the sole customers in the room. I understand accidents happen, but it would've been nice to receive an acknowledgment of the mistake in some way. However, the food is excellent and we'll be back. read more

When I read Ted R's review last week of Casa Barotti I bookmarked it for when I was next in that neighborhood. The opportunity presented itself today when I was on my way home from visiting Alan. Rather than taking my usual route home I took a relatively short detour and found a parking spot on Alcatraz close to College then walked first to La Farine where I bought their last loaf of apricot soda bread. After that I walked back to Casa Barotti, which is just south of the Peet's on the corner of College and Alcatraz. I walked in and a pleasant young man helped me. I chose a square of Capricciosa based on Ted's review and a square of Margherita. The man offered to heat it up for me but I told him I would finish it at home on the pizza stone. I asked how long and at what temperature and he said he would give me written directions. Then he carefully placed one square in a square takeout container, put a circular piece of baking paper on top of the square, then the other square and finally another piece of paper, closed the container and slapped a slicker on top w/ directions. Nicely done. When it was dinner time I preheated the oven and stone to 400° and baked both pieces of pizza for 6 minutes. I started w/ the Margherita and thought it was just OK. I ate maybe half and put it aside to try the Capricciosa, which I liked much better, as I suspected I might. The crust on both pizzas is light but crispy on the bottom. The Capricciosa is topped w/ San Marzano tomato sauce, mozzarella, Cotto ham, mushrooms. artichokes and kalamata olives. Just the kind of thing I love. I augmented the pizza w/ a variety of salads from Picnic and it was a good dinner. read more

This really took me back to that time as the food displayed is exactly like in Roma and tastes exactly the same as it did there. I also wan to say that the staff looked very young and they were very nice, perhaps their 1st job. My complaints however is that 1. Our party of 3 seated outside and waited for what seemed forever before one of us went in and we realized we had to order inside, the waiter saw us and walked by us but never said anything. 2. We also had to go and ask for silverware, the waiter brought our food but never brought the forks. 3. The water fountain was empty and stayed empty during our lunch and we were not given cups for our drinks (cans of San Pellegrino).
