The location is hard to beat, and the views of the Hudson River are absolutely beautiful--especially if you're lucky enough to sit outside. We especially enjoy the raw bar, the lobster rolls, the New England clam chowder, and the Oysters Rockefeller. They also have great cocktails, making it a wonderful spot for lunch, dinner, or a special night out. I have read many past reviews. I think this is a place that few areas have. It's a unique place, that serves thoughtfully crafted dishes. The main theme seems to be fresh fish, seafood, and it seems fresh everything else. (Confirmed that they get fresh shipments daily). With reservations for 9 at 6:30 on a Monday, where many places are closed, we walked into a fully booked restaurant. Our giant table stood out amongst all the other full tables that were in various stages of dining. So, we took up a decent amount of the restaurant space. A reunion with family and so were happy to talk and have some bread, and drinks while they were wrapping up their other patrons also enjoying themselves. The main purpose seemed to be to time taking our orders in a way that they would come out properly. As the food came out, it was one wonderful dish after another. I could name and describe eschar one, but fresh and flavorful is the best way. I can imagine that at the time when we arrived that the kitchen was hopping. The chefs seemed to focus very well on each individual order, so of course it took some, but not excessive time. As it took a little while to start we also were not rushed out. Perhaps if we had gotten there at 5 then I suppose we might have been moved along some, since restaurants need to get some turnover at the peak hours, we were happy to offer some well rewarded patience, which was reciprocated with polite, warm, service and great food. This is a regular place for locals who know what they like. It is well worth putting some effort in to explore the various foods and drinks offered, as they were all exceptional. So, I must give it 5 stars. The food is fantastic, the atmosphere is unique and actually stunning, especially during daylight where you are overlooking the Hudson and into the mountains across the river. The service was long, like 25 min waiting on a coctails, after 20min to order. And another 20 min for the food to come out. The portions were big. That probably the only great going going for them. We were up visiting our daughter at West Point and had the pleasure of dining here on a Saturday night- made a reservation earlier that day and we were lucky they could accommodate us. All of the servers were prompt and so friendly. Super accommodating. The food was delicious. The specials were all great. Menu is large! I love having a lot to choose from. There is patio seating but it was chilly when we were there ( October ) so we had a table inside. I feel like it's a place a lot of locals hang out as the bar was super crowded. We haven't been here in a few years and decided to give it a shot. Bad decision. Besides the drinks, nothing was very good. Two of us ordered the stuffed Cod. Cod should be flaky and not soft and mushy. Potato croquettes were tasteless. The oysters Rockefeller were not very good. It was a spinach puree rather than chopped spinach. The shrimp from the shrimp cocktail ($6 per shrimp) were definitely over cooked. The cocktail sauce was very good!! Ate here last night and it was okay. No frills thrill. I ordered lobster bisque and it was too thick and salty. My husband ordered the mussels and he said they were the best he had eaten. I ordered a New England lobster roll with butter and it was okay. The bread was a bit soggy from the butter and I had mostly claw meat in the sandwich roll. My husband ordered baked cod stuffed with crab meat. He said the crab meat was mixed with a lot bread crumbs and it was okay. However, he loved the broccoli and mashed potatoes. I ordered lemonade and it was decent and my husband ordered a glass of wine. They had a variety of desserts but we didn't order any. Only thing that was good was the Oysters from BluPointe which is the restaurant right next door to Jake's. The 4 people on the floor were doing the best they could. Bartender too but we didn't order any drinks besides a sprite and an apple juice. There were 4 people at the host stand almost the entire time? Why? HELP YOUR STAFF!! Your employees needed you.... Everyone was so nice but way too overworked. There was an event next door at Billie Joes that this restaurant knew about and was not prepared. Please don't stack your roll baskets on top of each other with the rolls in it!. There's No reason to have a 2 hour dinner with 3 people when we only got a kids Mac and cheese, a wrap, sandwich and the oysters (coming from next door). The wrap had 4 shrimp and some crab meat with shells and it was Super dry. Everything had stray bones and shells in it besides the oysters. On the Newburgh waterfront Captain Jake has been a fixture here for many years. My first time trying this establishment and I found it to be a very eclectic ambience. The service is excellent and the food was fantastic. There was no wait today and plenty of outside seating. I highly recommend this restaurant and I will be back to try it again in the near future. After coming from Blu pointe , I have to say we were really impressed . They had a nice bottle of Cabernet. We sat out on the patio and for March is was quite warm . I ordered the margarita steamers and Caesar salad . My friends took me out for a seafood dinner; it was my birthday. This place is closer than City Island in the Bronx. There's a view of the Hudson. A nice touch. Initially, I would've given it a much higher rating. It was the final minutes of our celebration; that changed my mind. More on that later*. Two appetizers, three double shots of Don Julio reposado, 2 glasses of wine, large bottle of S. Pelegríno, four entrées, four desserts, double espressos, and cappuccino. The portions were ample, not over the top. The sauce on the cod with crab meat was a little dry from being under the broiler too long. I asked for some on the side. It was closer to lobster bisque, it made a big difference in the palatability. * Some tips for the management: the waitstaff hangs out by the pass schmoozing, instead of attending to their patrons, the idea of shooting up a flare to get their attention came to mind. When they bring the check - it's signed and they come back for it. Then we're done and ready to leave. It's a form of age discrimination. The hostess that seated us; came over and very RUDELY and VERY bluntly told us she needs our table and HAVE to LEAVE! The ink on the paper had barely dried; when she suddenly showed up. THERE WERE TWO AVAILABLE tables on the patio and a few empty ones inside. With that UNPROFESSIONAL attitude; it definitely would have cancelled the servers gratuity. Amazing service always the food is amazing. The staff is amazing. I cannot remember our server name that we have all the time, but we have been there with parties of eight and parties of six during the day and actually on Monday nights and she has always taken care of us. She has light brown hair probably about 58. I just feel bad. I can't remember her name, but she is always amazing. The food there is way better than Blu Pointe. Who charges you three times the amount. Go to Captain Jakes and get food that's worth the money and don't get ripped off. I love visiting this place! The food and ambiance are both amazing. Excellent views of the water, even in the winter months. Love sitting outside on the heated patio. I am NOT a seafood eater, yet there are several food items that on my list of all time favorites. First, I love the Cajun chicken Caesar salad. I meant to snap a pic, however I devoured it too quickly. Second, the chicken parm is really amazing. There is something in the breading (which is just the right amount) that has a lil kick and how tender the chicken is that makes it one of my favorite chicken parm of all time - and it's not even an Italian restaurant!!! My daughter and I had lunch here this week. The service was the worst I've ever had at any restaurant. We were seated at 1:00 and saw no one until 1:20. Finally, the bartender came to get our drink and food orders. Still no server. "He was supposedly "busy". After waiting another 25 minutes, our "server" showed up and flung our food on the table and said he was really busy. We had no other interaction with him, till the bill came. I can't comment on all the food my family got but I can say that the clams were good and so were the fries and NE clam chowder. however the lobster rolls were cold. I was expecting the buns to be nice and warm and the lobster to also be that way, but because it was quite cold, I didn't enjoy it that much. I immediately started with drinks and appetizers, I didnt want a drink too strong so I ordered a wine (Rosè) it was perfect! and for my appetizer I decided to try for the first time oysters Rockefeller and it was absolutely delicious!!!! The little neck clams was extremely fresh and the calamari was too. I would come just to order appetizers all day! For my main meal I ordered the surf and turf with the butternut squash risotto and it's safe to say the filet was tender and was made with the correct temperature (medium well) and it was also well seasoned, however my lobster did not taste good at all, didn't care too much for the risotto as well. Tried & true seafood restaurant with the best water views. Our waitress Brianna was amazing, she was so attentive, remembered things we asked each other about the food in passing, and the food is fairly fast. We tried both their split pea with chorizo soup and French onion soup, the French onion was great but I found the split pea to be so-so.
