I loved, loved, loved our meal at Captain Jake's. We showed up in Newburgh last week knowing that we wanted a nice lunch, but not knowing what to expect. My husband wanted to dine somewhere quiet & intimate. Captain Jake's had a good size crowd. It was probably more crowded than he would have liked, but they were all so nice! On the way in, a couple that was leaving held the door for us. We were seated immediately. The food was great! I never got to try my husband's Shrimp & Oyster Po' Boy, which received rave reviews. Went there for dinner. Great menu, wonderful seating . If you want a patio seat by the River definitely make reservations. Had an early lunch on October 4. I had a nice IPA to drink and lunch was fish and chips. Fish was tender and moist on the inside and crispy on the outside. Fries were done to perfection. The coleslaw it was creamy, but not overly so. Our waitress, Haley, was very accommodating. She helped to Modify our table from large, round to small square. Came here as a group of 4 on a Friday night. It was a very busy night, people trying to walk in but no tables were available. Thankfully we had a reservation . We waited a bit as people were overstaying the 90 min length of time. The staff was accommodating and gave us a round of drinks at the bar while we waited to be seated. We got the Seafood Fra Diavolo, a salmon dish and calamari with salad. We all enjoyed our food and the lovely view with our drinks. We had a great time and our waitress was awesome. This place, like many on the front street rides primarily on their real estate location, location, waterfront location! We ordered a sangria and a dozen steam clams with chorizo to start and get a feel for the place. After that I down graded my trust and order from Lump crab cakes and went with the safest dish: salad with chicken. I'm used to fresh MD lump crab cakes and just coming off of vacationing there I knew theirs would not live up to my expectations. New England clam chowder was in the middle of our best & worst-good not excellent, a bit watery but tasty and inexpensive so we got what we paid for. The dual lobster rolls were tasty and fall somewhere in the middle of our best & worst - so decent. Nice serving size. Fries were good and crunchy. The onion rings were over done and in too greasy / tasted like oil was used too many times. My chicken salad was as expected. Mixed greens were fresh, chicken was dried out and over cooked but editable. The service was busy but ok until the waiter said he'd be right back to get us out of there and didn't come back for 15 minutes. We had the best experience here last night. We all shared the beet salads and the portions were huge and so good. Our party also had the salmon rib eye and sole dinners. Got hungry driving to Catskills and needed a quick detour for lunch. Cannot be happier that we decided to stop at Captain Jake's. If the weather allows, the back patio is the most picturesque backdrop for lunch. Sitting on top of the Hudson and with a drink in hand, you will feel all the stress melting away. The sauce in the clams special with chorizo and white beans was so good that we drank it scooped up in clam shells and drenched in bread slices. The clams were fresh and plentiful, the chorizo was flavorful and tender, and the white beans was surprisingly top notch. The dish came together perfectly - ugh so good. The fried cod sandwich was good not nothing that flew us away. The tartare sauce and crisp thick batter were probably the highlights of the sandwich. The lobster mac and cheese drizzled with white truffle oil could make an angel cry. The portion of lobster is huge and the cheesy gooey deliciousness is almost just too much to handle. We all sat out in the patio, weather was nippy so had my jacket on but the vibes were super awesome! Our waitress, Lauren very friendly & informative. I ate the chicken picatta the chicken was okay but the mashed potatoes and the broccoli was so flavorful. Everyone else was very happy with there food. I have to say, I'm not the easiest person to please whilst in a restaurant as I'm quite the snob, having working in many fancy-pants places. This place is absolutely glory each and every time I step foot in, all the way to the very friendly goodbyes on the way out. No matter how busy they are they don't seem to stress as far as service goes. I always had a glass filled with iced water. The food is fantastic and I mean FANTASTIC. They have THE best gluten free calamari EVERRRRR! If I lived next door I would live inside of this restaurant. Props to the owner for keeping the place consistent. My last visit ended in ruin. I believe the waitress put in my gluten free order as non gluten free because I was sick as a DOG later that night. Having not had any other food in the day aside from a couple lays potato chips, I can't help but blame Captain Jake's. I liked this place alot. It was a little chilly in there, but we were by the waterfont, the doors were open, and people were outside sitting underneath the tent. The staff is friendly, and attentive. The food is amazing. The Sole Francaise was something new for me. Never tried it before, but it was delicious. I recommend trying the Buffalo Shrimp, & Clams Oreganato. Only reason I gave any stars was because our waitress was very pleasant and helpful. Other than that, the food was awful. Lobster bisque and fried calamari were okay, but for the price I would not visit again. I would compare it to red lobster quality. The lobster rolls are what I came for and the only reason I'm docking a star is because I found a piece of claw in my roll as I was biting into it and almost swallowed it and also because the roll was missing flavour and the lobster was a touch over cooked. It was missing salt or pepper or just something I can't put my finger on. That being said I would return! I give them 2 star because the food lacks.... the service was fine but ......the portions were small and I ordered seafood Diablo I told them to hold the clams because they didn't clean them well the last time I was there..... they charged me an additional 13 for less seafood.... And the sauce was water bound and the sauce was sweet ..... they burnt the sauce tried to save it .... never will go there again... im not the only person that had a bad experience there...... sorry the river grill 2 door over is 10 times better .... oh my how the captains has fallen..... Very average. We had fresh oysters, they were good :) ($2.50-$3.00 each) Burger was good. Fish Tacos were fine but nothing special ($13). They came with rice & beans that were quite literally ... rice and beans ... nothing else ... no seasoning at all. Our server was great The hostess tried to sit us in the only table in the sun ... even though we asked for a shaded table. Even more ridiculous was that the other patrons told us that she's been trying to seat everyone else there too! There were lots of empty tables on the patio. So all in all it was average. read more

A solid 3.5 stars riverfront restaurant. Came here for an early dinner and got the patio seating. Service was actually very attentive. The cocktail menu looks interesting but the cocktails taste a bit water down. Other Yelpers also mentioned this water down cocktail issue. Probably best to stick with beers or wine. The oyster Rockefeller and steamed clams apps were enjoyable. One of us ordered the grouper entree and was surprised at the small size of the fish filet but it was still good. The potato croquette that came with entree as a side was tasty. Fish tacos were ok but not a fan of the plain white rice & beans. Probably thee best restaurant in Orange County. Minus the location, which is pretty much right outside the hood of Newburgh. Don't mind, as this is where I attended college. Food: 10/10 Service: 6.5/10 (Would only see waitress every 30 minutes) also tried memorizing order and messed up my order. Price: $$$ my meal was $75 alone, but so worth it. This seafood restaurant is located in a amazing location with a incredible view. Make sure you make early reservation for dinner or lunch because this place gets packed. This was our second visit to this restaurant and we were amazed by the great friendly service. My wife and I were amazed by the food, from the starting appetizer to the main course and out of this world deserts. This is will be our place for seafood from now on. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves fresh and flavor full seafood with a incredible view. This was my first time at Captains Jacks and it won't be the last. The staff is courteous and attentive. We were seated outside and the tables were all placed with a significant space apart so you weren't eating on top of each other. The staff knew the menu and gave excellent suggestions. The food was fresh and delicious. We had the captains platter and all the seafood in there was fresh and cooked to perfection. The lobster wrap was light and delicious. The lobster bisque was creamy and served at the perfect warm temperature. If you like seafood this is the place the check out. The view to eat by is also beautiful. The busboy constantly refilled our waters, which we really appreciated on the 90 degree day. We each got the Mermaid Water drink with Captain Morgan, pineapple juice, etc. It was very sweet yet very delicious. $10 per drink. I got the lobster fettuccine and my boyfriend got the jambalaya special. They were priced at $27 each. We enjoyed the atmosphere of the place. The staff was great. Our only complaint was the cost.
