Why did I stop at this place. Just because the service is good doesn't mean that the food matches the service. For the fish to not be good they sure are a bit pricey. I miss LJS they had the best fish on the Southside. The only thing that was actually good was the corn on the cob. Should've just ordered that instead. Smh read more

I just left the drive thru today 10/12/25 at the Hull Street location. The person at the drive thru was very rude and she has a nasty disposition. This was my second encounter her. When I placed my order I asked for the breadsticks instead of the hushpuppies. She verified the order w/o indicating my request to swap out the hushpuppies. When I asked her about it her response to me was I HEARD YOU...it wasn't what she said it was how she said it. People WILL NOT continue to come to this location if your employees can't provide DECENT customer service. She should not work the drive thru if she does know how to communicate with people. Ate here for lunch around 1pm. The restaurant was clean and tidy. The employees were extremely friendly, polite and helpful. Food is brought to your table. I ordered the lobster bites, shrimp and fish combo. Price was very fair for portions. All the seafood was cooked well and fresh. The fries were not very hot and somewhat chewy as if a little old? 1st time trying Captain D's. Been living in Richmond 14 years and had to see what the hype was about. I had 2 pieces of fried fish (one spicy and one regular) w/ fried shrimp and 2 sides and some hush puppies too. The fried fish was piping hot and crispy. I recommend eating inside or in the car after the drive-thru unless you live close. To my surprise, they offer several different side items. I cannot believe how great this restaurant is and has been every single time we have visited, and that's a lot. We have been visiting Captain D's since it opened in 1969 and it is Always fantastic. Their prices are reasonable, staff is Always friendly, the restaurant and restrooms are always clean, and the fish tastes better than some you order in Florida and a lot less expensive. The staff was attentive and friendly. The food was hot despite my 15 minute drive back home. I am genuinely impressed with this location. The food is hot and freshly prepared while you wait. The lobster bites were on the salty side. They were okay but nothing to write home about. The clam strips and shrimp were good. I'd buy those again. The staff were nice and greeted and thanked us. The dining area and bathrooms are clean. They do stay open until 11PM on Friday and Saturday. read more

Food is always hot and fresh and I've never had them mess up an order once, even though I'm buying dinner for three people, one of whom is quite picky and always making substitutions and additions. When you really need that batter dipped fish and hush puppy fix, this is an affordable place to get it. Service rarely comes with a smile, which is why I'm only giving it four stars. Awesome! This is the home of the best fried shrimp, filet, and hush puppies you will find in this area. I wouldn't recommend the crab but for under ten dollars, an actual wizard would have a harder time with that one.
