Decided to visit for the first time on a Saturday evening and it was such a pleasant experience. To start, we opted for the Salmon Tartare, so good and the flavors all melded so well together. If you like tartare, you'll love this, it does have a little kick. I was torn between the soft shell crab entree and the rock fish but opted for the rockfish. Things have changed since our last visit which has been 3 years ago. Not very busy for a Saturday night. They sat us in a busy area of the dining room when there were plenty of other choices, right next to the bar where wait staff grab drinks. Felt like we were in the way. We ordered appetizers to be served with the main meal. They delivered 1 out of 3 appetizers before our meal. This place was so off my radar but after we finally made it... it needs a shining beacon summoning Richmond. One of the best happy hours around Mon-Thurs, in the bar. Service is wonderful. From greet to seat and everything in between, we had an amazing time. It was our anniversary (and they gave us a slice of basal cake, so delicious). we wanted to try the Thursday happy hour special. The ambience is upscale but not too over the top. And, the food is skillfully prepared by Chef David and his team. When I first went here, it was 4.5/5. Service and the food were good and it was in my regular rotation. However, for the past year, it has quickly gone down hill or the point I've had 2 bad experiences in a row. The food was mediocre and the service wasn't great. It's become very inconsistent. A hidden gem in a little strip mall, this definitely feels like a place to go to celebrate. My mother and I were delighted by every dish (and demolished the bread and honey butter of course) and enjoyed both the alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage options. The service was excellent and very pleasant as well. This particular venture we shared the salmon egg roll (perfectly cooked with a lovely crunch on the outside and balanced well with the smooth acid of the avocado and citrus), the pork belly (the lone issue the whole evening - delicious and beautifully cooked but difficult to cut even with my steak knife), the papardelle with a smooth meaty Bolognese, and the absolutely splendid duck. The raspberry and coconut desserts were lovely as well, but I think the raspberry made it for best of the two. Absolutely worth a return trip. read more

Midlothian Chef's Kitchen is such a treat for those of us who live in the suburbs and don't always feel like trekking into the city for a great meal. The menu is fantastic and changes seasonally, so there's always something new and exciting to try. Every dish I've had here has been fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The dining room is thoughtfully laid out with nicely spaced tables, making for a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. There's both indoor and outdoor seating, so you can enjoy your meal inside or take advantage of a nice day outside. The waitstaff here are friendly, personable, and genuinely seem to enjoy getting to know their guests, it makes the whole experience feel warm and welcoming. Parking is never a problem, with plenty of spaces right on site. This is the perfect spot for a special night out or a casual dinner with great food and great service outside of the city. read more

Our first visit was a birthday celebration. Jacob, our waiter, was terrific. His recommendations were spot on - the food was delicious! Pork and shrimp dumplings and an amazing chestnut bisque were our first course. Both were outstanding - so very flavorful. My husband and I both had the pork chop and loved it. It was so moist and the accompanying polenta with slaw were excellent. The carrot cake for dessert took our breath away - unique, moist, heavenly. We discovered this place through a Facebook group we belong to that features Richmond restaurants. When I read the menu online I was super excited to see elevated, upscale food in the Midlothian area (usually only found downtown or in the fan) The restaurant is beautiful and comfortable-very pleasing aesthetically . Many nice touches like pieces of slate for your silverware to rest, things beautifully presented (the dumplings for example which come in a bowl over which broth is poured tableside). The service was great. The wine selection and cocktails also really nice. Charcuterie and salmon tartare appetizers were really nicely done. My issue with the experience is cold food. The chestnut soup which was probably really yummy if it was hot, was served barely lukewarm. Soup of all things, especially in a high end chef run restaurant should be piping hot. Same with the dumpling broth- barely warm. The filet dish, served with stacked au gratin potatoes and turnips, also cold. The filet itself was cooked nicely to temperature but the potato was cold, the very scant sauce on the plate was cold, as was the turnip. In contrast to the 1870 restaurant a short ways away where the au gratin potatoes are served in a crock, piping hot, cheese bubbly and brown on top, the potatoes here at MCK were squares cut from a larger casserole and placed on the plate- not cheesy, not hot. Such a shame for the treatment of a gratin potato which should be decadently cheesy and hot. The rockfish was the best dish, served warmer than the rest of the dishes, and with a lovely amount of tasty sauce (unlike the minimal sauce served on the filet dish). Everything also desperately needed salt, which again for a chef run restaurant is a big faux pas. Chefs know that salting your dishes is the key to flavor. Overall the place has potential for a higher end upscale experience in the mall area, but attention to serving properly seasoned, hot food would quickly move the experience from 3 to 5 stars. read more

What a disappointment! Long wait for food, it was Mother's Day and a special meal was NOT ENJOYED. Pastry were dried out. Biscuits had no flavor. Raw eggs were served with Eggs Benedict. The yolk actually fell to the side as the dish was being served. The egg white was gelatinous and not properly cooked. I sent my mother's Eggs Benedict back for fear of her safety and gave her my meal. When my plate came back within minutes, it was even worse . My desire for culinary excellence in Chesterfield County is strong and I take issue with the fact that a majority of 5-star restaurants are located in the city of Richmond. The suburbs appreciate great food as much those living in the city. There is a lot of money to be made in Chesterfield. If you build it, we will come. I want Midlothian Chef's Kitchen to succeed but if their food and service continue their current trend, I worry they will go out of business. I'm saddened to say I don't think we'll be dining here anymore. Before I explain my recent visit, I feel the need to establish a baseline with my experience and expectation with this restaurant. I dedicated my 300th Yelp review to Midlothian Chef Kitchen with a dazzling 5-star review on July 19, 2021. My very good friend celebrated his 50th birthday on October 9, 2022 with a fourteen-person party that was easily in the thousands of dollars, again a wonderful experience had by all. I've been here for food pairings, casual dining, etc. We've easily dined here half a dozen times. I've put my money where my mouth is. On February 14, 2023, my wife and I celebrated our seventh Valentine's Day. We wanted to stay local so we chose Midlothian Chef's Kitchen. Our reservation was at 8:15. Look, I get it, couples may not be leaving their tables quick enough and that cannot be helped. So, we decided to sit at the bar and order a drink, which took an absurd 15 minutes for a gin and pineapple and a signature cocktail. Sometime later we were called for our reservation and were seated at a lovely table where we proceeded wait, and wait, and wait some more. Where is the hustle? Where is the expediency? Was there an absence of appropriate staff for the evening? Where is the consideration and communication representing your business for your customers? Finally, a friendly server came to take our orders. The food runners put on this cute demonstration serving the soup but it was cold. Usually, soup is served so hot you need to wait for it to cool before you can eat it. However, this was Creamy Lobster Soup and though I am aware that cream soups should be served at slightly lower temperatures; (190°F-200°F), mine tasted room temperature AT BEST and my wife's soup was cold. Was this by design or did the soup sit in the window for 15 minutes? I can't say. The second course was the filet mignon. Again, what we were served was painfully ordinary. There was no heat, sizzle, sear, herbs or butter. The texture of the steak was off-putting, I suppose this is in part due to the sous vide cooking method. The sauce was the best part of this dish. If we are mailing it in, can we do something like a classic peppercorn crusted steak au-poivre? What's wrong with classic French cooking? For the final course, we come to the desert. We had the Salted Caramel Pot de Crème, which was pleasant. I know this review may come off as sour grapes, but it was Valentine's Day. It's supposed to be a romantic evening with great food at a great restaurant and everything fell so egregiously flat. This experience missed the mark on every level of hospitality imaginable. Nice ambience, quick service, delicious food! Started with the Crab and Corn Chowder for me and hubby selected the Garden Salad. My soup was rich and loaded with crabmeat. There was crisp corn and micro greens which were perfect compliments. They brought the table some crusty bread and honey butter which were wonderful. Entrees were the Rockfish for me and hubby chose the Salmon. Both were seared to perfection but not overcooked. I was so stuffed that I didn't order dessert, but hubby is always up for a nice chocolate panna cotta. I tasted it and wished I could have made room in my "dessert stomach"! DH asked where I wanted to go for my birthday and I asked to come to MCK. He was not familiar with the place. But once he looked at the website, he was as excited as I was to try it. I am delighted to say we had a lovely evening. We started off with a smart cocktail. I had The MCK, their take on an old fashioned (delicious). DH has a bourbon neat. For our starter, we enjoyed their charcuterie platter, which had a few of the usual suspects and a few new surprises (persimmon jam, y'all!). For our mains, DH had the rockfish with a truly lovely lobster cream sauce. I opted the duck breast, which was absolutely delicious. Portion sizes are filling without being too much. After dinner, I was too full for dessert. But if I had, it would have been the hazelnut creme brûlée. The interior of the restaurant is minimalist and elegant without being stark. Have been coming for a few years and I'm not ever disappointed by the flavors. The only disappointing thing about this space is the fact that they've discontinued brunch service. The brunch was impeccable, and hopefully they'll bring it back soon. The ambience is beautiful and gracious. Sunny days are perfect on the deck and inside is great for a family or girls' night out photo op. The menu changes often, but literally order anything. The pairings are perfectly curated to combine seasonal flavors and complimenting spices and ingredients. 11/6/2024: Everything about this evening was perfection! So glad to revisit MCK where everything is elevated and symphonic. Our girls dinner started with pork & shrimp dumplings in pork broth, salmon belly egg roll, and smoked beef tenderloin tartare. All apps were delish but the beef tartare stole the show as well as being a great shareable. Entrees were rockfish with summer succotash and lobster cream, fried calamari with squid ink pasta in a basil espuma, and butter poached filet with brown butter broccoli purée. Whoa! I was unable to choose a favorite as each dish was so incredibly well executed. Finished once again with all three desserts, strawberry basil cake described by our party as 'summer in a bowl' ,blackberry thyme pots de creme (this girl loves her custard!), and spiced chocolate ganache with coffee ice cream and chocolate crumbles.. very rich but very good! I came here for my aunt and uncle's anniversary. The ambiance is really nice I remember what it looked like before it was midlothan chefs kitchen and its a huge difference. We were a party of about 11 and were sat immediately. Our waitress was Kristen and she was excellent!! She was thorough with the menu and very personable. The food was delicious and i was pleasantly surprised! I was very happy with everything and I would highly recommend this place to anyone. The food is seasonal so the menu does change. For appetizers we got the smoked beef tenderloin tartare, soo good! We also got the burrata cheese on toasted sourdough, crispy pork belly and the roasted beets and citrus salad. For dinner majority of us for the butter poached filet mignon which was so tender it basically melted in your mouth. We also got the seared rockfish. I was fortunate to score reservations for opening night of Chef David Dunlaps newest venture "Midlothian Chefs Kitchen" Upon entering the small and quaint space I instantly felt comfortable within the restaurant. All the servers had masks on, the hostess made sure all the customers had masks, and provided some for those who didn't. The cleanliness of the restaurant was extremely noticeable. With that said, let's get to the food! As a true chef should, you could tell that each dish was made to order. From the charcuterie board appetizer to the dessert finale. The food presentation was amazing and the taste of each ensemble had flavors explode in your mouth. The salmon was cooked perfectly and the friends at my table loved their tenderloin. The general consensus was that the main dishes were impeccable.... So why the 4 star review and not 5 stars? Although the main dish was amazing, the sides of the dishes including the Potato Purée of the tenderloin and the broccoli with the Roasted Chicken were cold. It was as if it took a while for the food to be plated, and it was once a warm dish, but showed up room temperature. The dessert choice was the Almond cake, which we felt would had been better warmed up, and felt the cake had been taken out of the refrigerator right before serving. (Maybe it's meant to be this way, and we just didn't know, but it felt off) It was also opening night the service was a little slow and noticeably uncoordinated. We watched one of our ordered drinks sit on the bar to be delivered to us for 8 min. I finally had to ask a server to bring it to our table; and then that person had to check with 3 other people to make sure it was ours...a little discombobulated. But, again, it was opening night and as a small business that opened in the middle of a pandemic I applaud them. In the end, I look forward to coming back when all the kinks are out of their system. I was really excited to try this place, but we were a little underwhelmed. The service: the manager/ host who greeted us was great! Our server was just okay. The menu is very unique so we had a lot of questions about what the dishes were like and what he recommended, but unfortunately he wasn't super knowledgeable about the dishes, and when I asked what he recommended, he just said everything is good! Besides that, it also took a long time to get silverware after we got our food. The drinks: -jalapeño Paloma: it was okay. Not too sweet or spicy, but just lacked flavor. The food: -bread and butter: delicious!! The honey butter was so good and the bread was fresh. -Lamb neck egg rolls: very well prepared! I'm not a huge fan of lamb when it tastes game-y, but if you're into that then you'll love them! -English pea crab appetizer: very unique, but tasty. Not sure I would order it again, but I'm glad I tried it. -sage and black pepper pappardelle pasta: underwhelming. I personally didn't get a taste of sage or black pepper, and just felt it was a pretty boring dish (besides the fun color). In my opinion, it could definitely use some veggies or protein to add more textures and color. -Horseradish crusted salmon: AMAZING. As an appetizer we shared the smoked beef tenderloin tartare. It was good. ordered seared rockfish and it was awesome. I enjoyed the crispiness of the snow peas. My partner ordered filet mignon and he was very pleased with his dish. For desert I ordered the strawberry basil cake. It was spicier than I expected but I truly enjoyed it with the balance of ice cream. My partner ordered the chocolate ganache. We were pleased with our dinner and planning to visit again. Midlothian Chef's Kitchen was recommended to us by family and we decided we just had to try it, as the food sounded SO good! We decided to sit on the patio, as it was beautiful out. We visited at prime dinner time on a Saturday and the place never really filled up or got very busy. It was a quiet and intimate experience. To drink, I had the GRTC, which was a gin + tonic with rosemary and peppercorns. It was light, refreshing and delicious. I love how they garnish their drinks. My boyfriend tried a couple different cocktails himself and loved them all! We started with the Pork + Shrimp Dumplings for an appetizer and I am SO glad we did. We enjoyed them. I will say, if you don't like sharing, I would order two. For dinner, I had the agnolotti (mini raviolis) with braised lamb, asparagus, and peas. The dish, put simply, was absolutely delicious. Upon a return visit, I would even order the dish a second time. It was SO good. The portions are on the smaller side compared to what you normally see in restaurants, which some may not think is a bad thing. However, I would love to see this amazing dishes in larger sizes so I could bring some home to enjoy a second time, as leftovers. The service was a little on the slower side as they were obviously short staffed. We noticed our server simultaneously bartending and the owner, Chef David Dunlap, seating tables and even getting drinks started. We won't hold the service against them as they are likely dealing with the same staffing shortages that restaurants across the nation are facing. The pork belly appetizer was so good, I loved the fried broccoli and how they just melted in my mouth. I kept the pork theme going and got the pecan crusted pork ribs- delish! Super tender, with the right amount of fatty pieces. I really appreciated how this dish was presented on a wooden slab- so unique! This came with fried potato salad, very heavy in the starch and wish the meal came with vegetables to balance the heaviness.
