Mr Submarine has become EXPENSIVE. I just paid $50 for 2 Cheesesteak combos. This has been in regular rotation for me for the past 15+ years. Love their Cheesesteaks and Gyros. However, $25 for a Cheesesteak combo at a "fast food" spot is just too much. The drink was small, no refills because inside is closed. I know everything has gotten more expensive but this seems over the top. read more

I moved to the area recently and am so excited that I found a go-to spot for a solid sub. The prices are super reasonable. I wish their hours were longer. They close at 6pm most nights and 8pm on the others so it's tough to run there for dinner, which is when I'm mostly likely to eat out. This location is drive thru only. We were pleasantly surprised by how fast the service was given it's a local spot and presumably made to order. read more

A drive thru sub spot, could I ask for more? I called and placed my order and got it in ten seconds. I got a club toasted with the basics lettuce, tomatoes, etc. The food was fast and fresh. Visiting Richmond for the Half. Stopped by Mr. Submarine on W Broad St -- it's drive-thru only. I grabbed a Grilled Chicken Hot Sub with a house salad and ate at the outdoor tables since I was starving. The sub was decent and had a lot of chicken. Salad was simple (lettuce + olives), but fine. Well I wasn't impressed. The inside was closed so I had to go through the drive thru even though the business hours say they closed at 6 and it was 5:30. It did look very clean inside from what I could see. The staff didn't even smile at the window just told me the price and sent me on my way. I got the steak and cheese and a turkey sub. Both were flavorless and the steak was so chopped up I thought it was brown rice. I'm really disappointed here. I was hoping to find a good sub shop. read more

Mr. Submarine blows the competition out of the water! These subs are "under"rated and need to float to the top of your list! This place has been around for decades, and I must admit, I tend to bypass Mr. Submarine because it's like a fixture on Broad street! But, the other day, my bro and I started craving a sub when we drove by, but it was a Sunday and they were closed! So the next day, my bro surprised me with a sub he had ordered from the drive thru! Wow! This was a huge Italian Cold cut sub, with double meat, and a tangy dressing! The hoagie roll was soft and fresh and didn't overpower the fixings!! Plenty of tomato, lettuce, cheese, and just enough onion to make this sandwich a winner! My next selection on the menu will be the Philly Cheese steak!! Inside the restaurant, there are places to sit, and there are a couple tables outside too! The food came out super fast, in minutes, and the price was right! Take a break from those other chain sub shops, and treat yourself to one of these yummy "grinders"! They are sub-perb!!! read more

Currently drive through only Service was relatively quick Size of subs is good and the cold cuts were great but the cheesesteak was awful. Steak and cheese sub tasted like overcooked steak-ums and was chopped up really tiny. Had almost no cheese and very little flavor. Would not order this again. However my experience was redeemed by the club sub. The bread was nice and toasted and the cold cuts tasted fresh. I just wished they had pickles to put on it. TL;DR- cold cuts good. I haven't been here in YEARS and decided to revisit when driving past recently. I got a steak and cheese for myself and a spaghetti with meatballs for my mom. The steak and cheese came heavy with the oregano. I didn't know I had to ask for lettuce, tomato, onion and mayo. It definitely would've improved it. It was kinda dry otherwise. I only drove by this place 500 times before deciding to check it out. While the facade is inconspicuous, their reputation is strong. I kept hearing about them online, so finally last week I joined the drive-thru line. I ordered the Italian and the steak and cheese, both of which without tomatoes. Service was prompt and friendly, and the hoagies, erm, "subs," were in perfect condition upon arriving home five minutes later. I figured I'd eat one half per meal, to have enough for two days. That did not happen. The steak and cheese was inhaled -- truly one of the best cheesesteaks I've had since moving down from the Philly area five years ago -- and the Italian was tasty, too. That one could've done with a tad more meat, but I still enjoyed it. They have limited hours, or else I already would've returned by now. My husband and I drove over 30 miles to go to Mr. Submarine on Broad Street. The people that work there are so sweet and the Subs were better than any other sub place around. Then it happened, the prices went up and the amount of meat on the subs went down. We are so disappointed, loved this place but we will not be going back. read more

Good and speedy service. Fries are top tier and served fresh. I always get the steak and cheese. Has a good flavor but the crumbly steak can be hard to handle sometimes. It falls everywhere. Also, the cheese ratio to all the steak is not good, even when I get extra cheese I have a hard time finding it. It is now fair to say that I've become a regular at Mr. Submarine on West Broad. Huge and delicious subs made to order. Drive thru only but I don't think this is the type of place I would dine in. Even though the line of cars during lunchtime is long, the line moves fast and the lady that takes the orders is friendly and accurate. It's like a well-oiled machine over there. I think for the size of the subs you get, coupled with the quality of ingredients, it's an excellent deal. My subs usually I can make into two meals. And their gyros are delicious and stuffed to the max with meat. All of their subs are. Cannot really go wrong with whatever you get here. Super yummy and highly recommended! read more

Been eating here since the location on JD in the 80s, all through college when they were on VCU campus to pulling up soon as Inland in RVA. Sadly, today was my last day. Landed in RVA got the rental and called in my order. I got to the location line wrapped, I tried to go in they dont do that anymore. I told the young lady who opened the door the food would be cold because aint no way to keep it warm the time it would take to get through the drive thru line. She insisted it wouldn't got the food not only was the food cold so were the fries they use to drop once you ordered. read more

I've been driving by Mr Submarine for years and always tell myself so need to hit this place up. For weeks now I've been hankering for a sub so today I finally decided to hit it up. Even though the drive thru line was probably 10 deep, it moved pretty quickly and gave me a great chance to call my mom! I ordered the Italian Cold Cut combo and added sweet pepper. The order was lightening fast! As others have mentioned, the bread is yummy but it did get soggy really quickly. So much so that, I ended up tossing half the sandwich. But rest assured I was plenty full cause these subs are GIANT. Like as big as my forearm. Them some thicc subs! And pretty darn tasty too. Was this the best sub ever, no. So someone in one of my foodie groups posted a pic of a Mr. Submarine steak and cheese and it bought back sooo many good college memories as when I attended VCU there was one right across from where Chipotle is now on West Grace St. For nostalgia's sake, lol I took a ride down Broad and to get my fix. The inside was closed due to Covid so i roll around the drive thru. I ordered just the steak and cheese and my bro got the combo. Now the fries taste just like they did all those years ago. Hot, crispy and salty! You never need ketchup with their fries soooo good! Because I had a little travel time to get home I opted to not get the lettuce or tomatoes (nothing worse than a soggy sub to me). Got home it was still warm, added some Mayo and ketchup as that's how I like it and it was just ok the bread was fresh but maybe the meat was over cooked or precooked but the seasoning was familiar but as a whole it was just ok. It still was worth the memories of that great family who owned that VCU location and all the good food we had there. Maybe another day I'll try it again. read more

In my opinion, these are the best subs in Richmond. Even though this location does not offer a dine-in area, I prefer the sandwiches themselves over the ones at the Route 1 location. The chicken, beef, and gyro mear are all sliced super thin and grilled to perfection. The only downside is that they don't always hold up to a 30 minute drive home. With that said, they are still pretty darn good. read more

Worst steak and cheese I've ever had in my entire life. The steak had been chopped literally until it was dust and hardly any of it even made it to the bun. I assume the place is understaffed because only the drive thru was open. The process for taking orders was awful. Cars were backed up into the road because they didn't take orders until the next person was served and thus it took longer to even start cooking anyone's meal. Staff were really nice and the food was tasty which is why I gave it 3 stars. I hope y'all can find more staff. If you're fully staffed, send me a message and we can work on improving your process, there are some obvious opportunities. read more

If you're driving down Broad St and see a business with a name like Mr. Submarine, it's hard not to stop. Any place that would feel so confident about their sandwiches to call themselves Mr. Submarine must be good. Right? Yesssss! I usually order the Super Sub because it's a great mix of classic sub ingredients, is huge and just leaves me feeling good. They have a wide variety of other hot and cold sandwiches and also have some non-sandwich options, though I've always eaten the subs. This location has a drive-thru, which drops you right back onto Broad St. to continue on your way. It's a classic place that's been here for at least a generation and seems to always have a line.
