I stopped in for a quick bite after eating lunch at Lakeside Deli. My boyfriend had ordered the hot dogs at Lakeside and I did not like them at all, so I needed to cleanse my palate with a better hot dog. Roy's was phenomenal; the kind of nostalgic bite you recall from 1999. Price was super cheap. I also ordered a vanilla milkshake. It had a kind of strange taste to it but wasn't terrible. Roy's is a walk up take out burger joint. They mainly offer burgers, hotdogs, fries, shakes and vanilla soft serve ice cream cones. There's an order window to order and pickup your food. There's no inside seating but there's a few picnic tables to eat outside. The service and ordering is quick and straight forward. The food is pretty good for a dive burger stand. The prices seem to be reasonable except for the cups of soda. That's my one complaint, when you order a soft drink, the cup is filled with ice so you don't get a lot of beverage. My suggestion would be to ask for little or no ice if possible. read more

I remember going to Roy's as a kid with my grandparents and not much has changed over the years. It's not a fancy burger spot trying to earn a Michelin star, but it's still delicious. The food is good, the staff is polite, and I love the nostalgic feel. I hope they stay around forever and don't change a thing! read more

Deborah and I went to Roy's Big Burger Lakeside Avenue for a late lunch. We both had a loaded Roy's Big Burger with Cheese., large French Fries, and Fried Pickles with Diet Coke and Sweet Tea. Roy's Big Burger did not disappointment, delicious, and we sat on the picnic table and watch the traffic going by and making conversations with a few of the customers waiting for their orders. we will definitely eat there again, a great place to enjoy a good meal and great weather read more

Wednesday 1/8/2020 5:55pm This is a very small take out restaurant on the side of the road off of Hermitage in lakeside. While I consider it a take out restaurant, there is a few tables for outside seating during less cold temperatures. I was craving a bologna burger and a friend on Facebook suggested Roy's Big Burgers. When I arrived there were no other customers here. As I sat in my car I noticed plenty of cars were in and out. The lady who took my order was VERY nice and helpful. I ordered the bologna burger w/cheese, lettuce, tomato, fried onions and mustard, French fries and a sweet tea. I couldn't make it out of the parking lot, I sat right in my car and enjoyed every bite! Bologna burger - the bomb! Just what I needed. Perfect! Small French Fries - they were ok. To be honest, I'm weird about my French fries. I like crinkle cut and steak fries mostly. These were just regular ff, but they were plentiful and hot which I appreciated. A Richmond/Lakeside landmark, this walk up burger joint has been an RVA favorite since 1961! Now that's something to crow about! This iconic historic building brings back memories of days gone by. Mustangs cruising down Lakeside Avenue, grabbing burgers and shakes after high school dances ...skate keys... roller rinks... My daughter had never been here, so it was a treat to take her on a maiden voyage and pass on this Richmond tradition. It was too chilly to sit outside, so we sat in our car, like the other diners in the parking lot and chowed down! We got the classic cheeseburgers, fries and chocolate shakes. And, while they are not the best burgers in town, they were satisfying. Coming to Roy's is an experience. It's a right of passage. Are there better burgers and fries out there? Sure, but there's nothing like that nostalgic feeling you get when you open that brown paper bag of greasy goodness and unwrapping that wax paper to find your old fashioned burger inside! Visited today for lunch. The absolute worst hamburger I've ever had in my life. It was cold hard dry Like it had been in the fridge since yesterday and the other was mushy and tasted old and freezer burnt. I called and complained and they said they switch and they're using PFG brand burgers now to save money. Will never eat there again do you not recommend anyone else to eat there and they received a $31 donation from us today. Absolutely horrible!! read more

While never a fan of chains, in the wake of COVID 19 stay-at-home orders, I furthered my support of independent businesses. For decades I had heard sung praise for Roy's Big Burger, but never tried it. So, today, a beautiful sunny day I decided to drop by and enjoy the outdoor seating and what I had heard was a great burger. Maybe my expectations were too high because Roy's was a huge letdown. The burger was nothing great to start but it was difficult to discern any flavor until removing half of the bun and wiping off some of the excess mustard. The fries were just bad: hard, hint of dirty-oil flavor, and on the cold side. Given the current economic condition, social unrest, and global pandemic, I would be inclined to forgive the aforementioned flaws except the service was also unfriendly. These are my favorite cheeseburgers in town. My order is a cheeseburger with extra pickles, ketchup, and mustard. It's just... YUM. I'm not above eating in my car, so it doesn't bother me that the only seating available are picnic benches--ALTHOUGH if they had a little awning/tent over the tables, I would absolutely sit outside there. The onion rings a crispy and deserve to be put on top of your burger, but I'm a pretty big fan of their fries. The cheeseburger though--let me tell you why it is so good! It has that certain flavor only a clean, hot griddle can get you. It's so juicy and delicious. I hear their breakfast is fantastic, and I need to make time to go try this. Please read to the end. Back when I was a kid, I had to stand on my tippy toes to look in the window. The experience of watching your burger be prepared does NOT diminish as an adult. Yup, Ive been going to Roy's that long. Yes, I did get lollipops from Roy as we enjoyed eating out back. Roy's is a thing - it is a standard, it is Lakeside. It does not matter that it is not what it used to be, you still must pay tribute. Only a kid of Lakeside would get this. I kid you not. No idea if this was a fluke or if this is the new (old) normal! I hope they have reverted to the "old" for the new norm. This place has been around since 1961, so they've slung some burgers in their day. Walk up and order at the window, take a seat on a nearby pick nick table and wait while you watch a steady stream of people line up for grub. No frills food, so if you're uppity get gourmet out of your mind before arriving. Today I had a Roy's burger with cheese all the way and a fried chicken fillet sandwich. Both were on point. The burger was loaded with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, ketchup and mustard on a big ol bun, yum! That chicken sandwich was crispy and delicious with lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise. Are these the best burgers and fries I've ever had? No, definitely not. Is this little shack up to health code? Meh, maybe, maybe not. Would I eat here when I need some greasy goodness to soak up some alcohol or ruin my diet? Abso-freaking-lutely. Roy's is what it is: no frills, old-fashioned, ignore-the-consequences fast food. The burgers are huge and juicy and come on a five inch bun with "the works": raw onions, shredded lettuce, tomato, and yellow mustard. I recommend going all-in and asking for mayo to offset the acidity with creaminess. The fries are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, but unseasoned. Throw some Old Bay or All Seasoning up in that business and they're pretty great. Despite the protests of my sensitive stomach, Roy's is a piece of Richmond history and a decent spot for way too much food on the cheap. read more

Roy's is not a restaurant but more of an institution; It also has a VERY specific ordering process, which is thus: 1. Plan your order BEFORE you get to the window, down to the last detail. Yes, there IS a line of people ahead of you--don't just assume you're next. When they call next, the next person will walk up--based on who that is and when you arrived, you'll know if it's you or not. 2. Have your money in hand. Tell them your order, pay, and step aside and wait; They will call out your order being ready via it's contents when it's done. 3. Grab your order, leave a tip, and leave. Some newcomers have complained that employees strike them as rude; They aren't, they just usually have a LOT of people to go through and don't smile a lot. They will, however, remember you despite how they may seem too overwhelmed. Back in the day, if you caught Roy's NOT during peak hours (Lunch and dinner), you could call in an order and it would be ready when you arrived. I don't know if they still do that. If you arrive at lunch or dinner in a big rush and no patience, you're going to have a bad time; Roy's is ALWAYS SLAMMED and does not have a gateway to another dimension inside it, so that itty bitty space and few employees you see in the windows? That's it. That's all the room and people they have. I'm certain it's hot and these people do their best to get food out quickly, so please don't get on their case because they don't smile or give you a kiss on the cheek when you order. I normally wouldn't go to a place like that and by that, I mean it's open store front location in Lakeside. A friend encouraged me to try them out and I was pleasantly pleased. From the view, it looks like it's been there for awhile. It's shack like and isn't decorated like anything of today's fancy spots which makes it very distinct and classic. The burgers were good, well flavored, and affordable. Cook time was about 10-15 minutes and they prepare all burgers well done. Surprisingly, it still has juice and flavor. They have outdoor seating and a lot to the side of it is convenient for parking. I can understand why in the warmer days why it is seemingly busy. Lakeside already is sort of its own mini town where long term customers still go. Try it out if you're driving by. read more

Unfortunately the quality of Roy's has not been there since the 90's . Hamburger meat is frozen now and not fresh like back in the day . Lettuce is the crappy shaved type and the buns are the cheapest you can purchase . Bottom line quality is absent at this burger stand ... But what it IS, is a good burger reminiscent of the days of drive in burger joints. The menu has expanded over the years to accommodate requests for BBQ, chicken, etc. I wouldn't know anything about those things -- I get burgers (cooked to order) and fries and onion rings (both hot and freshly made) and (bottled) cold sodas. If you are into just a little bit spicy, I recommend the Bama Stinger - grilled onions, jalapenos, gloppy cheese, griddle fried 1/4 pound patty (or two if you make it a double) on a soft bun. The burgers remind me of a place in my hometown which is why I come here. They are always fresh. I don't expect fine dining here- you are getting a side of the road burger. The chicken is meh. My daughter says they are "stringy". We never wait long for our order. we usually feel rushed when ordering. I was also a bit turned off when I watched them make the burger, and they slap your patty onto this greasy and unclean flat top. Pretty mediocre. The burgers are thin and perfectly round, like a food service or Kings Dominion burger. My bf just commented, as we sit here and eat this in the car, "too much bread". He said the onions were perfect though. The sweet tea is watery and not sweet. The service was very friendly, but some of their burger prices are too much for the small pattys. Roy's burger was a quick stop for my 30 minute lunch. The burgers are really underwhelming size wise, they smell and taste good, The bun was quite dry and the patty almost inexcusable small. Taste wise though it was good enough for gov't work, (as my husband would say) I also tried the onion rings because I had been craving onions. They tasted like bread with a little onion favoring. I was bummed! Seems They must freeze their onions, sucking all the flavor from them. The only thing I tasted was the breading, don't think what you're getting is fresh. You'd be crazy wrong.
