The garlic butter oysters are by far, my fave in Jax/ St Augustine so far, and piping hot when they got to our table! The dinner special, a baked fish with crab sauce over mashed potatoes and green beans was amazing! The hostess was very friendly and accommodating, since it was super hot and sun still up when we got there, we wanted to find a good, outdoor but shaded table, and she was patient and got us situated! I always look forward to Caps when visiting St.Augustine. The atmosphere is beautiful. However the past few years we haven't gone because the prices have creeped out of our budget range. Recently we did go with some friends and well all I can say is I wish we didn't and would not go there for dinner again. Yes as expected the prices were high but it is a beautiful place but when you pay higher than average prices you expect good service. Our server was rude. She spoke extremely fast and sssshhhhed us when we tried to ask her to repeat herself. At the other end of the table 2 of our friends we're having a conversation and she sssshhhhed them too. But most disappointing was the food. The food came out lukewarm warm. I understand they were busy but at the higher prices I would think they would have figured out how to time the service better. My boyfriend and I stopped by on Saturday night - naturally the place was packed! The way they organized the parking (complimentary valet) was impressive! They had a guy directing traffic, a girl with an iPad taking down your name and party size, and then when you checked in with the hostess, they were able to tell you the wait time. This is a large restaurant with indoor seating, outdoor seating, a bar and a beautiful dock. What is super cool is - you can just go to the dock and order drinks/appetizers directly from a server there. We ended up doing that, since the wait for an outdoor table was 90 min, and we did not want to miss the sunset. Wish more places offered this option! read more

Of course it is complimentary with a not-so complimentary tip. Anyways, the food is consistently good. It's always very fresh, and is typically pretty quick once you do sit down. Some notable favorites are the fish and chips, truffle fries, shrimp and scallop sauté, blackened fresh catch, and vanilla grouper. Ultimately we do come for the ambiance. Solid choice for seafood with a great location, atmosphere, and views. During the nighttime, there are tons of heat lamps in case of cold weather. I really enjoyed the bread with the compound butters, and the key lime pie. For my entree, I got their signature vanilla grouper. The vanilla sauce honestly tastes like vanilla ice cream. If you like any fried fish, you'll probably enjoy this. I probably would go for a different grilled option next time, but I'm glad I got to try their most popular item. Would recommend especially for any nice occasion or date night, it'll be hard to find anything nicer! When you walk in it looks like you are on vacation. The views are absolutely gorgeous. The service is spectacular. Our server, I believe her name was Emily, was well versed on the menu. I did not realize it had been years since I updated my review for Caps, so I decided to do that. My girlfriends and I have put this on a girls night rotation several times per year and have been enjoying our trip down from Jacksonville (about 45 minutes). The atmosphere is great being waterfront, inside and outside dining options, and a nice menu loaded with fresh seafood dishes. Our last visit was to enjoy the St. Augustine Nights of Lights and to celebrate Christmas and holiday birthdays. I always take my own bottle of wine to a restaurant and the corkage fee here is $25. That is a bit steep compared to other places I frequent but it is an option. We had three entrees as we love the bread and butter, so no appetizers were needed. The entrees were the tuna, the salmon and a blackened grouper. All were delicious. They do not take reservations, so be prepared to wait. You can get a drink and stroll the dock while you wait though. Worth checking out if you are in the area. read more

This was the worst food experience we have had here. The she crab soup was so salty, I had to ask for a cup of hot water to fix the issue. The calamari was not anything like we remembered - too much sauce and again too salty. We both ordered the $34 grouper and the fish was over-breaded and over-fried. It was served with bland mashed potato and fried spinach. Balance, anyone? Not here. I tried getting some butter for the potato (marginally better) and lemon for the fish (no luck). Sadly, I won't be back. Our waitress was good but who goes to a restaurant for the service over the food? She mentioned the ownership changed last year. The flounder fish, coleslaw, beef tips, cheese platter and irish coffee were good. The french fries, fried spinach and fried cod were not so good. Too much oil! This place was so great we came here twice in a week! It's a pretty big place, with different seating areas. The first time we went, we sat in the enclosed room (looked like a garden room). Second time we ate at the covered pavilion, which was really nice. The place is nicely decorated, great water views and beautiful sunsets! Service was excellent both times. Servers were both attentive and made great dinner recommendations. Including recommending getting the vanilla rum sauce on the side due to its sweetness. Good thing she did, because my husband would not have enjoyed the fish with the sauce. Everything we ate was excellent! If I could, I would title this review "i miss the old Cap's." The menu has shrunk to next to nothing and the wine list is abysmal. The views are so amazing and the vibe is great, but please do not go with a party over six because you will be completely ignored for the automatic gratuity. I ordered the sesame tuna which I have ordered for years and tonight it was seared literally on one side. I wish I was kidding. My daughter had the lemon pesto pasta and several people tried it and we all agreed it tasted like an air freshener. One of my top 5 dining experiences ever! Atmosphere was gorgeous and we had a scenic outdoor water side table. Our server was genuinely friendly and gave great recommendations from drinks and appetizers to entrees and desserts and they were all perfection. We started with the Goose Garden Fizz and It's A Tai cocktails. We had the local fresh catch flounder 3 ways - the fried nuggets appetizer; my husband had the herb crusted beurre blanc with truffles fries and wok brussels; I had the blackened flounder with coconut rice and lemongrass curry sauce. We finished with the key lime pie. Everything was 5 stars! We even stayed a little longer and enjoyed happy hour drink cocktails in the indoor bar. Staff was rude and forced valet unnecessary. I was asked to leave by manager with my service dog, we were on the back patio and had been told upon entering service dogs were allowed. Informed the manager that he was infringing on ADA rights, which he claimed he was not a medical professional, and therefore believes he could not infringe on these rights. He still asked me to leave which is illegal, and shows extreme, poor character and judgment. I was humiliated and will not be returning and will encourage others to do the same. read more

We were early for dinner, they promptly sat us at the bar outside. Amazing views. Really nice funky rustic outdoor vibe!! Apps at the bar with our first round of drinks. Perfect! Please do not pass up the Oysters Rockefeller. They were so good, we added a second order with dinner! The three entrees we had were all fantastic!! Prime location for a restaurant! Mostly outdoor seating with a gorgeous view. Valet parking only. The patio is mostly covered and helps a lot with the direct sun. There is a small dock for boats too. My daughter had a lot of fun playing on the shore collecting shells and climbing a little tree tower made with drift wood. They only offer lunch on the weekends. They food and service is great. It was cooked perfectly, and the sides of mashed potatoes and roasted carrots were fabulous. I also got an extra side (hush puppies) and they were awesome. What an absolutely gorgeous restaurant!!!!!! We got there right when they opened so we could get a table on the water. It was so worth it, because within an hour, the entire restaurant was full. The views were spectacular and the weather perfect! Jordan was an absolute delight of a waitress! She brought waters without asking, was personable, and kind. We all got sodas and the salmon bruschetta. It came out quickly and she brought extra sauce because she loves it. We need more servers like Jordan. Been coming here since 1982. In that time, the view hasn't really changed - and remains compellingly wonderful. The deck to the dock is still the best watering spot in all of North Florida. What also hasn't changed since 1982 is the menu. And every year, those same dishes continue to seep quality away while maintaining their 4-star pricing. After the Hurricane Matthew rebuild, there was hope that a rebuild of the menu might also arise...but, no. New owner(s) don't seem interested in rocking the boat either. Same old, same old. Heartily recommend just getting drinks and spending time on the deck. And at $16+ for each drink, lots of time should be spent relaxing. read more
