This restaurant went viral on social media I believe, so it's very popular, and there was a long line when we arrived. No reservations so you've got to arrive early or wait. Party of four and we waited about 30 min. There is no menu here. You tell the waiters what you like to eat. Meats, seafood, veggies, tapas, which you lean more strongly towards, etc. The waiter will then make suggestions on what they think would be great for your table and the total quantity of food. - vermouth - had to get a few glasses and it was cheap and delicious - tomato bread - a staple in spain. probably our least favorite dish but objectively good. - iberico - amazing and melts in your mouth - fried shrimp and squid - perfectly and lightly fried - beef tartare - sold but didn't wow in any way - monk fish - so tender and well prepared. They show you the full fillet before portioning it for each diner - steak - so perfectly cooked, tender, and well seasoned - clams - good and fresh, but not the first thing that comes to mind as remarkable when I think about the meal Didn't see any prices. Just got a bill at the end and honestly, was about $40/person which I thought was reasonable for the amount of food we got, plus a couple rounds of vermouth. We visited Cal Pep during our trip to Barcelona because it is often described as one of the best tapas places in town. Unfortunately, our experience was quite disappointing compared to the reputation. The restaurant was extremely crowded and the dining style felt a bit chaotic. Since there is no clear menu with transparent pricing, it was difficult to know exactly what we were ordering or how much everything would cost. It gave us the uncomfortable feeling that tourists could easily end up overpaying. As for the food, while the ingredients seemed fresh, many dishes were overly salty and lacked the balance and flavor we expected from such a famous restaurant. The server brought us Octupus, Patatas, tomato toast, Tuna Tarta, Barcalao and some spinich with beans. Considering the high prices, the overall quality simply did not match the hype. Best meal of my recent short stay here in Barcelona. They are mainly a seafood spot, but I saw cured ham, beef steak, and other stuff being made for others. The vibes are jovial and intimate. The staff seem to get along with each other and talk to the customers, while staying generally efficient with their service. As stated in other reviews, there really isn't a menu. Sit at the counter and talk to the server. They'll get an idea of what you want, dietary restrictions, and then recommend stuff. My server spoke English well enough. He got me the fried sardines + calamari, pan con tomate, sautéed clams, and sautéed spinach + chickpeas. All were delicious. Classic Spanish flavors; liberal uses of salt, olive oil, and garlic. At this point, with some sparkling water and a glass of house white wine, the bill was €33.90 for these four things. The highest tapas was €11.85 (clams), the lowest was €2 (pan con tomate). And I was basically full. According to my receipt, these tapas were all half-portions, but they looked like a lot to me! Then I decided to be decadent and ordered the tuna tartare (€21.50) and it was terrific. The final bill was €55.40. This is all to say that you can have a pretty great meal for under €35 here per person, if that person was a 140-lb male, lol. Definitely some with friends if you can, so you share and try more food. That said, don't bring too many friends. I suspect you'll have trouble snagging table with a large party given its size and popularity. Bathrooms: Clean and functional. We were gonna go to E l Xampanyet but the line was ridiq so went here since it's on my list as well and it's nearby but there was also a long wait unfortunately. This spot is a hole in a wall too, Tapas places are typically small around here especially the classic ones so expect a long line, we waited for another 20 minutes and we decided to check out the next one on our lists snd hopefully to go back to this spot next time. Pretty much a place of legend in Barcelona. It's a seafood bar where you belly up and then tell them what you can't eat or don't prefer. Then they kinda make you what is fresh today. If you have some hard diet requirements, don't even bother coming here. They do what they can but if you don't eat a lot of seafood, just skip coming here. Everything is pretty great but there are some standouts: like the scallops with foie gras and lentils (and the lentils were the star there). The issue is, if you go, you can't really order it as there is no menu per se so you get what they can do. Let go...it's fine. You'll want to bring a small party two (maybe maybe three people max) and line up early (say 30 mins before opening times) to try to get one of the first spots at the bar. Bigger parties can make a reservation, but you'll be seated at a table in the back room, the magic is at the bar seats where you can see all the action and interaction with the chefs. read more

For me, my favorite meal in Barcelona. A genuine Catalin experience, Not fancy. This is mostly a sit at counter place and there will be a line of you do not show up before opening. People behold you in line are standing behind you enjoying a beverage and the show. You will still feel loved and appreciated. It's basically worth the wait. The food is centered around seafood. There is no dinner menu. You are queried. How hungry are you? Say "very". Do you like Seafood? Shellfish? Yes, Yes? (If answer is no, you might consider McDonald's) The quality of the food is great. Don't get me wrong, I love tomato bread, but I would've saved this for the end to ensure I ate everything else first. - Mixed Fried Seafood: Includes shrimp, squid, and anchovies. Enjoyed most of the seafood but the anchovies were a bit too fishy and salty for me personally. - Steamed Mussels & Clams: My favorite dish! I practically ate this all myself! - Tuna Tartare: Yummy and fresh! Toasted bread was a bit too hard. - Tortilla de Patatas: Got confused with what this was at first thinking it was a dessert but I was actually pleasantly surprised it was a savory potato omelette dish. After 6 tasting cocktails and 3 actual cocktails at Paradiso, X and I desperately needed some food to soak up all the booze. I had already bookmarked Cal Pep since my friends had recommended it. We stumbled in around 10pm and managed to nab two bar seats. They didn't have the razor clams left at that time, but we managed to get the baby squids as well as the tuna tartare. We wanted one more dish and they recommended the Spanish tortilla. This was the best Spanish tortilla that I have ever had. No joke. It was so creamy and delicious. The squids were fantastic, very fresh and flavorful. We finished the night with a slice of chocolate cake, which was so moist and exactly what I wanted. I would recommend coming a bit earlier in the night if you want the full menu, but we had no issues with whatever was left that night. Sometimes when revisiting old haunts expectations often fall short of what is just nostalgia. Cal Pep in '04 for me was a mid day stop, a cold beer, and some tapas. Last month, I returned with my husband and some old friends. This time for dinner on a Monday night before departing Barcelona for Africa. The food, the ambience, the experience were so good. Pretty much the equivalent of drinking seawater. Snag a reservation and head to the back room of this unassuming sport in Barça to be whisked away to a space reminiscent of times gone by. Wine cellar up top was very cool. Framed reviews from 2005 had us a bit nervous. At one time this was considered one of the 50 best restaurants in the world, but I fear this distinction probably no longer holds. The restaurant's concept is a mixture of tapas and omakase - the house chooses what to serve and service was fabulous. Here's a run-down: - Fried artichoke: awesome! Definitely salty but I think this is merited. - Tuna tare-tare: very fresh, but again salty... like borderline too much - Spanish potato omelette: beautiful, best, most well-rounded dish received - fried seafood platter: amazing calamari... salty - steamed clams: basically just salt in clam form - steak and potatoes: exclusively salt, potatoes underdone. Borderline inedible. I think this place is primarily made of salt, but at least the value here is amazing for the volume of food received (140 EUR including a bottle of wine for 4 people). 2.5/5 there's gotta be better in Barça. The freshness of the ingredients could shine so much brighter if not for severe oversalting. read more

Tourist trap. Cal Pep is not worth over a two hour wait in line for overpriced tapas food that is only "okay". Cal Pep reminds me of the children's book, The Emperor's New Clothes. Just because an online website with a list of best tapas in Barcelona or a hotel concierge at a 5-star hotel tell you Cal Pep is the best, doesn't mean it's true. Just like in the children's book, the emperor IS naked. So be warned... don't be fooled. I assume the tapas was amazing once. But like many restaurants, the cook changes, management changes, staff changes... and with this changing of the guard, the food just isnt living up to the hype. The food here was good ... but we felt that either we were taken advantage of ... or, the ordering system is just completely wacky. Long story short, we waited at the bar ... about 25 minutes. There were 2 people waiting (hoovering behind the diners) ahead of us and as diners got up, they slid in. Finally, we grabbed a seat at the counter and asked to order. "There is no menu. You don't order ... we bring you the food we bring." said the person behind the counter. "Just tell me if there is something you don't like". Out of the 1,000 or more foods on the earth, I am sure there are a lot we don't like. So, you want us to just start rattling off foods we hate? We figured that it's some kind of 'SoupNazi' type of system and decided just to go with it ... although we kind of knew what we wanted to eat for lunch and were not expecting (or wanting) to eat 6 courses. I see this absolutely awesome dish of what looks like Langoustines (small lobsters) that the person 3 or 4 seats down is eating. "Can I get that?" I asked the server. He just looked at me and kind of shrugged. Surely, that would be included ... right? Wrong! The ONE dish I wanted and asked for ... he did not bring. Instead, we watched them bring plate, after plate to us ... none of which we ordered. Half of which we didn't want. Here is what was brought to us: - Some kind of mushy corn-tasting cake, (maybe a sweet omelet?) which would have fed 6 people, though there were only 2 of us. - A small dish of clams in broth. - Tuna Tar Tar ... I don't eat raw fish, so it was basically wasted. - A piece of cooked white fish ... this was good, but nothing either of us would have ordered - Steak and potatoes ... again ... not bad but never would either of us have ordered it. Here is what we wanted: - Langoustines - Fritto Misto (fried calamari and other sea creatures) - Razor Clams It was frustrating watching other people be served the food we wanted to order, only to get steak and potatoes, white fish and other things we considered more like a dinner meal vs. a luncheon tapas. The bill came and it was around $150. We came in thinking we'd each have 1 or 2 things, and instead we left feeling full to the brim, as if we had just ate 6 meals. (and we kind of did) The food here is good ... and it's high quality. The chefs seem to know what they are doing ... but to not be able to order what you want and be forced to eat way more food than you want ... we won't return. If you go in knowing that you are not allowed to order, there is no menu and you basically have no control over the meal, you'll probably enjoy the experience. Go in hungry and with no expectations. They open for dinner at 7:30 and you will want to get there about 15 minutes early in order to get seated at the bar. The place is always full when it's open. There isn't really a menu, your server/bartender will ask you what you like or don't like and will start bringing you tapas. We started with 2 Estrella draft beers which were not to our liking so we switched to a bottle of white wine (18E). We had tomato bread, ham croquettes, tuna tartar, clams in a sauce with pieces of chopped ham, octopus, and sausage with beans. We were stuffed to the gills. Our bill was 114Euros. I love this place for the nostalgia. Came many years ago with my husband and sat at the bar. I just remembered the best ambience and food, so simple but incredibly delicious. So when we came back to Barcelona, this time with our kids, I made it a point to return. I was able to make a lunch reservation and they sit you at a table in the back... wasn't the same as I remembered all around but still decent to good. Our waiter was great and made some good recommendations. The favorite was the razor clams- the first time we ever had being at cal pep, but the cockles and mussels were disappointing. I remember them being amazing the first time I had. Everything else was pretty ok. Had we sat at the bar again perhaps it would've been better meal and I recommend that to anyone that comes here that the bar seating is a must.
