This was the sweet spot between lunch and dinner. Walked down steps a level to the Bar area with high top seating throughout and a smaller outdoor seating area. Ordered a Verdejo and started with El Bikini. This Tapa sandwich didn't disappoint-think grilled cheese infused with Iberian ham and truffle -delicious and so much mozzarella cheese it stretched with every bite. Decided to try the Grilled Artichokes-this one was a revelation-something about the Iberian Ham and pine nuts combo took it over the top. Tried the Croquettes which happened to be chicken and it was tasty. Service was friendly and bit quirky/feisty and that's ok as part of 24's character. We've been here a few times when we are in Barcelona, and it never disappoints. Also, they now take reservations, so I'd definitely book ahead as we used to have to wait a while. They have outdoor seating as well as indoor seating downstairs. Place is very cute and staff is always friendly and ready to help. Food is always good and fresh. Came here after a busy day of exploring the city with my friends, and we ordered a ton of different dishes. My favorite was probably the steak was deliciously seasoned and came with the most interesting puréed potatoes. The Russian salad was also a highlight for me. The truffle sandwich, which is one of their highlights on their menu was just OK in my opinion, you can skip it for the price tbh. Of all the Tapas joints in Barcelona, I had to walk into this one. I've had the fortune of visiting Barcelona many times for work and on one trip years ago I found Tapas 24 where it has remained on my 'must drop by' list every time I visit. It's on the pricier side of things but you can drop by if you're not too hungry and make out ok. Now they have the greatest hits as far as tapas go...get those and get some other stuff you normally don't see. A few of to note: the lentil stew was full of flavor, the avocado salad (really just a sliced avocado dressed in pesto) was stellar, and the chocolate mousse with a wafer, olive oil, and sea salt is just mind blowing. It's proudly Catalonian so don't ask for a Spanish red as they only carry wines local to the region. For me, it's remains on the go to list for Barcelona. read more

So, we went to Tapas 24 a few years ago for a quick bite and absolutely LOVED it! Some of the best octopus preparations we'd ever tried. Perfectly-cooked bravas. Nice staff. Affordable. You name it, we really couldn't find a complaint. Fast-forward to late 2018 and we decided to pop in for some more tapas during a more recent trip, and it's incredible what a couple of years can do. Maybe it was a bad night? Maybe the service suffered because we were the only people sitting outside? Who knows. All we know is that our attempt at recreating that amazing experience from a few visits ago was a complete failure. The octopus, which had been so perfectly cooked, was just awful in texture and preparation. The bravas suffered from a similar fate. Poorly-cooked, but the prep at least remained the same. We also noticed that the prices seemed to be higher than we remembered. Perhaps the perceived cost hit us more because of such disappointing food, but the higher cost and the less-quality food execution just had us regretting going back. As people who travel to Barcelona a minimum of once every year, I can tell you that there are far better places to go, especially if you're looking for average food in a touristy atmosphere. read more

The last time I visited Barcelona was in September of 2008, before the financial crisis that gripped the country for a good part of the last decade happened. Back then, El Bulli was at its peak with impossible reservations, reinterpreted classics and molecular gastronomy that did not try to recreate your childhood, but drew experiences from that innocent time. Chef Adria was also churning out disciples daily who carried forward his spirit by opening their own innovative eateries around the world. "Vicki Cristina Barcelona" had just premiered, and it was rumored that Woody Allen himself would jam with the band at a swanky 5-star hotel in upper Gracia between shoots. In short, it was a town hopping with wealth, creativity and global interest. That was the right ecosystem to sustain Carles Abellan's Comerc24. I remember this being the first time I experienced (and paid for) a "deconstructed" prosciutto e melone appetizer consisting simply of a honeydew chupito with crunchy ham chips. I remember having the sensation of being so fascinated by the creative presentation, that I didn't mind that it was neither a. satisfying nor b. an improvement on the real thing. All I could think of was, "what else can these guys do?" and, "how come I never came up with anything like that?" Fast forward to this January, and all I wanted was seeing how Barcelona had reinvented itself after the financial downturn. I found this in Tapas24 -- Carles Abellan's more casual restaurant since the now defunct Comerc24. The set up is underwhelming and feels like you will be in for a run-of-the-mill experience found in any of the dozens of tapas bars lining Eixample. If it hadn't been suggested by a foodie friend who's a local, I would have walked right past not even knowing this was Chef Abellan's newer incarnation. Once you pull up a stool at the counter, you're in for a treat. I'm glad I went with a group of friends who were more than happy to try the top hits on the menu as recommended by our server. It was like a Catalonian omakase. We had a calamari sandwich inspired by the popular fare you find near the beach that was out of this world -- it had kicked-up umami from a kimchi salt they developed at the restaurant. Their burger with foie gras looked more like a slider by American standards, but it was packed with flavor, juicy and the right amount of doneness. I loved the pairing of romesco with griddled, in-season artichokes. It's difficult to make patatas bravas sexy, especially within Spain, but the tricked-up sauce that topped them was plain delicious. Their pa amb tomaquet flatbread was positively addictive and showcased the best of the region: fresh tomatoes, herbs, tangy olive oil and gorgeous, lip-smacking sea salt. Their drinks were prepared with a lot of care and with copious pours of gin & tonics, cavas and sangrías, I'm happy to report anything that happened after this restaurant visit is a gleeful blur. I think our server was a young woman named Dani, and her enthusiasm, knowledge and professionalism made all the difference. She had been working at the restaurant for more than five years, and I wouldn't be surprised if she were running the joint soon. Even if it's dismissed as a tourist spot or there's a long wait time, do yourself a favor if you're in Barcelona, and make it a point to try this place. You won't regret experiencing how a city can show its resilience, relevance and virtuosity through its food. read more

Because the restaurant is so small, you may have to sit at the bar or share a table (we were lucky enough to get our own!) Service was pretty fast but it will take you a while to get the attention of a server to get the menu. They do have an English menu so if you don't want to guess, don't bother trying to read the utensils wrapper. My favorite tapas dish of the night was definitely the fried green chilli. It was a little over seasoned but it's such an unique dish that tasted absolutely amazing and the tortilla was a close second. Everything else, the fries (bravas) and the potato ball (bomba, which is way better at Porto's if you are from the states) were just average. Personally, I would skip the sausage pasta (fideos). While the pasta was fresh and cooked to perfection, it was, again, over seasoned to the point where it was difficult to eat. We had to wash the pasta down with water because it was just too salty. My first Tapas experience in Barcelona and I am not sure how authentic it was but the food I ate was yummy. I went to this place because it was listed as one of top 25 tapas places in Barcelona and it had one Michelin stars in 2019. I ordered Zucchini flowers filled with cod and chicken croquette and before me my kids gobbled those up. We also ordered half chicken , unfortunately it came uncooked with oozing blood and that was an appetite killer for my kids but gladly they had enough before that with bread and other stuff that we did not mind skipping the chicken. They gave us new piece fully cooked to go. We also had potatoes omelette and zucchini omelette which was at room temp tapas style and I am not a big fan of food that is not hot so I skipped them ... fries came with hot sauce so if u order one for your kiddos ask to skip the sauce because it was a hot sauce. I am happy with what I ate and it was an experience for me ... The menu looked pretty exciting and we were able to see into the kitchen so off to a good start! However, those really were the only positives about the meal We ordered the patatas bravas, lentils with meat, fried squid, and Barcelona rice. Welll...... the patatas bravas were French fries with sauce (I'm as big of a French fry fan as the next person but these could have been frozen). The lentils were pretty good but the size was itty bitty. We attempted to order the fried calamari but were instead given the fried squid sandwich. No big deal about the communication issue but a tiny hot dog bun with maybe 6 squid pieces on it for 9 euros?! You've got to be joking! Sadly I didn't even get a picture because I was in shock. The rice dish of the day was artichoke and squid. The artichokes were cooked well (but we were given 1 artichoke cut into 4 pieces) but the squid was very gritty. Overall the rice had very little flavor, especially not for 22 euros. Overall I was extremely disappointed by this meal. I don't know if we ordered the wrong things or if we honestly ate at the wrong restaurant. This place was bustling with English speaking people and many more were standing around the restaurant waiting for seats.
