Bacon, egg and cheddar on ciabatta bread

Did you know Olivia has breakfast sandwiches? If you have seen any of my reviews for them you already know I love their sandwiches. Breakfast is no exception. The food quality is always outstanding and the couple that runs Olivia are very pleasant. About the sandwich: Bacon, egg and cheddar on ciabatta bread. They are delicious and very filling. My favorite spot in Indy!

A City Market must try! I recently dropped by for a meal. My first choice, a shrimp po' boy, was sold out. The lady behind the counter was quick to recommend the chicken sandwich. Her enthusiasm is certainly admirable. After re-reviewing the menu, I ultimately took her advice. Topped with a unique flavored coleslaw between French style bread, it was nothing short of delicious! A staple eatery in the good ol' City Market that's well worth trying!

This is one of many diamond in the roughs tucked away in the City Market. The restaurant's menu is a little rough with papers everywhere. But don't let that distract you from the good food and service there. I ordered the patty melt, and it was very tasty. The line can get a bit long during the lunch rush, but it is worth the wait (10-15 minutes to get food). I love their potato salad too. I saw there was a well stocked salad bar there, but if you could not tell by now, I am not a salad kind of guy. If I was, I were I would definitely give that bar a shot.

I grabbed a bowl of Red Beans and Rice from here and it was tasty, warm and filling. They have based their recipe on one of Emeril Lagasses. They don't try to conceal that fact. It's right there on the menu. The gravy was anchored in the holy trinity of onions, celery and green peppers. It was smooth and rich with Cajun spices: I know I tasted a bit of thyme and I got the heat of cayenne powder. There were at least two types of meat in there. Perhaps a type of sausage and some ham. The pieces of meat where finely sliced into tiny little triangles almost the same size as the red beans. It was all ladled over a huge bed of white rice. This is so satisfyingly delicious. I have been trying to make an effort to support little Mom & Pop places during this time and I'll be back soon.

the order line has a lot of choices!

I think I took more time making up my mind than this restaurant took to make my lunch! When you walk up to the booth, there are banners with food (mostly sandwiches) listings along the entire length of the booth. There is also a substantial salad bar along the north side of the booth which can be tempting too! I finally settled on the Cubano sandwich (Pork, Ham, cheese, mustard, & pickle) with a side of cole slaw. I grabbed a napkin from the counter and went to the south end of the booth to A) get out of the way of the new orders, and B) find the pick up counter. Before long, they called the last two numbers on my ticket I received after paying. A plastic fork was included in the styrofoam container. Note that they have a self serve soda dispenser that you can do while waiting too. I took my order upstairs and grabbed a spot in the balcony of City Market. The sandwich was about 6" overall and sliced on a slight bias, wrapped in deli paper to keep the handling clean. I thought the bread and sandwich ingredients were quite good, but not the best I've had. They used sliced ham and pieces of pork not uniformly carved to make the meat of the sandwich. The bread was fresh and had a nice bite texture without being toasted. One thing I particularly liked was a surprise in the slaw that it had some heat to it. I'm used to slaw being either tangy from a vinegar/sugar base or being creamy. This was on the less creamy side and the bit of heat was a pleasant change from the usually cool taste I get from slaw. I definitely recommend it if you like trying something different. Overall, efficient service and good food without taking up your whole lunch hour to get your food. Review #1966

$5.50 for as much salad as you can pack into the Styrofoam box! Being the lettuce/salad snob that I am, I did a quick run through of the bar before pulling the trigger: chickpeas, kidney beans, spinach, peas, hard boiled eggs, beets, potato salad, pasta salad, cauliflower, broccoli, etc. You're set. Tucked away in the northeast corner of City Market, what Cafe Olivia lacks in style, it makes up for in speed, efficiency and price. The line was impressive during the lunch hour yet still moved along fairly fast. In the future I will have to try some of their hot menu dishes like red beans, rice and sausage, soups of the day, and sandwiches. I highly recommend Cafe Olivia if you're in a rush, not looking for frills and need something light and healthy to eat while on the go.

The City Market is a long-standing lunch institution in Indianapolis, so I wanted to give it a shot. Plus, I'm a supporter of small business. Cafe Olivia is tucked back in the northeast corner of the market. As with all of the market offerings, the kitchen is open and visible and just a few employees are working at any one time. The lunch rush in the market is hectic, but I was greeted professionally and decided to order the bbq pulled pork with potato salad. The sandwich far outweighed my expectations. The barbecue sauce was excellent and the potato salad was authentic. The market provides sufficient seating on its second level. There is plenty of parking on surrounding streets. The pricing is very conducive to the lunch budget of any patron, especially a college student. Absolutely recommend and will be returning.

It's very cool on the inside with vintage and Indiana-themed decor, tin ceilings, and, of course, a potbelly stove. The staff were friendly. But brother and I were very confused about the ordering process. There wasn't a lot of directional signage showing where to start and each step of the process. I watched a few other customers go through and they didn't seem like they had a problem so maybe it was just us. Next time I would probably just order online and pick it up so I could avoid the in-person ordering process altogether. I had the turkey sandwich and it was pretty good. I would say definitely a step up from your typical sub sandwich chain in terms of flavor and toppings options. I tried the chili mac as well. The chili is definitely à la Wendy's but I enjoyed it. The mac and cheese was good as well. I'd probably get either on its own but not together again. I also tried the Potbelly/Zapp's collab chips, the Hot Pepper flavor. They were good but are definitely not for everyone. When I visited, most of their fountain soda options were out of order so I settled on a no sugar added Pineapple Passionfruit juice/soda which was actually pretty good. We'll definitely be back - especially to try out their milkshakes!

The sandwich is about as long as my humerus, and I ate the whole dang thing in one sitting. New York Gourmet Deli is not to be confused with NY Gourmet Deli, also in Indy. New York Gourmet Deli is located on East 21st Street on the near east side; NY Gourmet Deli is on Ruckle Street, near The Children's Museum. Are they owned by the same people? I don't know, but someone needs to change their name so I'm less confused. Anyway, New York Gourmet Deli, on the east side, is great and located in an unassuming parking lot full of potholes. It looks like a liquor store from the outside, but step inside and you'll see the large deli counter where you order sandwiches, burgers, fries and other foods. The joint is also a convenience store, of sorts, with a wall full of refrigerated beverages, aisles of chips, candy, and lots of Mexican snacks. There's also a little corner of the store with goods like laundry detergent and other necessities. The hustle here is unmatched. The fellows behind the counter were flying all over the kitchen to fulfill the orders. I visited around noon on a weekday, which seemed to be a busy time because there were lots of people from all walks of life here, either waiting to order or waiting for their orders. The guys behind the counter were unflappable and took orders and made sandwiches at a speedy pace. Even if there's a line, you won't wait long for your food.

I've struggled with how to rate and review Goose the Market for a long time…read more I've struggled mightily. It's an Indianapolis icon in many ways. It's beloved. And listen, it's not the most wheelchair friendly place in the world. If you're a wheelchair user, you're in all likelihood not going to the cellar unless you're extraordinary with you're chair or you crawl. I remember attending a Yelp event here, and I just wrestled with these issues so much. It's not inaccessible - you can get in the door, though even the parking is a bit wonky and the curb-cuts a bit worn. This is an older building in an older neighborhood. So yeah, if you're a wheelchair user plan ahead. I am a wheelchair user. And I suppose I should knock off my usual 1-star for accessibility issues. But, I just can't do it. I, instead, choose to go 5-stars with my narrative disclaimer that there are accessibility issues here. But, my word. This is a great place and every single experience I've had with Goose the Market, including last night's Italian Film Festival, has been stellar whether I'm in their location or at an event they are catering. What is Goose the Market? First off, nearly everyone considers it one of the best - Indianapolis Monthly, Eater, Yelp, etc. Goose the Market offers a daily menu of sandwiches, soups, gelato, and small plates. It offers raw beef, pork, poultry, game, seafood, in-house made sausage/smoked meats, and more. It offers charcuterie - both in-house and from other producers. It offers farmstead cheeses, fresh produce, artisan breads, preserves, sauces, pickles, pasta, crackers, flours/grains, and a lot more. There's the cellar - Enoteca bar with Italian style wine by the glass and small plates (and it has all-ages seating). Goose the Market offers a wine of the month club, gift cards, catering, classes, daily specials, and more. What can I say? There are those places that are worth the effort. As a lifelong person with a disability, I long ago realized the world would never be perfectly accessible. It's never going to happen. I'll continue to work toward a more accessible world, though I'll also honor that there are those places where I feel welcome anyway. I feel welcome at Goose the Market, though I can't quite get the full experience. The service is exceptional, the products quite awesome, the environment warm and friendly, and there's simply no doubt it's one of Indy's treasures. So yeah, five stars. With a disclaimer that those with mobility impairments may need to plan ahead or have a companion along. Who wants to be my companion?
