Yesterday evening there was an incident at Cafe Mokka that involved someone inflicting serious damage on the hood of my car. I attempted to reach out to management about this situation and in turn received a very dismissive and defensive response. I sincerely hope that no one else has to deal with any kind of damage to their vehicles while parked at Cafe Mokka as they do not appear receptive to these situations. We only went there for tea and coffee since most other places nearby were about to close for the evening and we needed something after a very long drive on windy and rainy day. The Finnish sauna seemed very popular, for us the tea/coffee were just right. The cafe part has a rustic and inviting vibe. read more

The place itself is nice and I liked their coffee and chocolate dipped baklava. But I hated the music, staff are really loud, which is very annoying if you are trying to work or read. This place is probably nice to hang out with friends but it is difficult to focus on reading or working because of very loud staff and some other patrons. Update: Had to update the review because we used the hot tubs and they were awesome! We used them at the beginning of the working hours so they were clean. It was a very intersting experience. Normally I love this place. One bad experience wouldn't cause me to drop my rating by so much. But tonight was soooo bad! My husband and I paid for a half hour in a hot tub and also ordered a large hot chocolate and a large latte. While we waited for our drinks, a couple with a toddler showed up with full swim gear for the kiddo. Keep in mind, it's 8:30 at night. We got our drinks, noted that they felt extremely light, and headed out toward Hot Tub #5. On our way out, the toddler started screaming. He didn't stop until after we got our stuff hung up and got in the water. I took the lid off my latte and discovered less than half a cup of actual beverage underneath all the foam. My husband's hot chocolate was about 1/3 whipped cream. We did our best to relax despite the noise from the toddler (we love kids but come on, normally we can't hear anything while in the hot tub because the other visitors are respectful adults). When our half hour was up and we moved into the dressing room, we heard one of the employees go in and throw the foam cover back on before the next group went in. Simply amazing and relaxing. Call at least one day in advance to make your reservation for the sauna or hot tub. My sister and I arrived 30 minutes before our reservation, and we ordered some coffee and pastries to make time pass. The "mokka" was delicious, not too sweet, and the whipped cream on top was a wonderful treat. When it was time for us to go to our hot tub, the young woman at the register did a clear job of explaining the process. You are in compete privacy during your hot tub experience, as there's a wall surrounding your hot tub. We were one of the first guests, so the water was clean and I didn't have any hygiene concerns. They are open pretty late so I'm not sure how the hot tubs look later into the day...There is a private dressing room as well, and there are towels for rent available if you need them. The hot tub itself is the perfect temperature and there are jets. The green trees and weather added to the experience, and I felt nothing but relaxed. There is a timer that helps you keep track of how much time is left. I'm not from the area, but when I come back, I can't wait to try the sauna!!! My boyfriend considers Cafe Mokka his safe haven because he can get away from the stress of college life. He decided to take me here while I visited him at HSU. Our experience at Cafe Mokka was incredible - one of the best dates we've ever been on. The environment is so serene - trees, wooden buildings, a fireplace. It encourages productivity and community interaction. It is great place to sit and work on some homework and have a great mocha / chai. In the cafe, there are board games and sometimes live local music. The sauna & hot-tubs are affordable and relaxing - something you must try when you go often! Cafe Mokka is an experience in stages. First, you enter the cafe and feel it's cramped, wooden, cozy, intellectual, relaxed setting. Read a newspaper from somewhere far away, or a magazine, or just hang out with the cafe cat, Clover. Next, grab your espresso-based beverage and move out to the back patio. If you've come at night, experience the feeling of leaving town altogether. Sit on a bench or chair and look at the trees or stars above you, or admire the lanterns that mark the bridges over the pond. Lastly, move into a wooden hot tub (hopefully you've made reservations ahead for this) and relax, relax....relax. The water is hot enough to keep you steaming on the coldest of nights. Update... as I've finally gotten a chance to try out the tubs! This is a review of the hot tubby tubs. The first day four of us tried to get a tub reserved, but they were all booked... (I guess a gloomy rainy day in Arcata means hot tub city). So we made reservations in advance for the next day. **Highly recommend making reservations in advance if you're planning on going.** Two changing rooms-- one for those coming in, and one for those coming out (to avoid awkward accidental naked peep shows). The tub itself was very nice and relaxing. (See photo.) Walls all around, lots of room, and no roof means privacy but all the joys of being outside. Jets, yep. Hot, yep. Perfect, yep. (Well, perfect as long as you ignore all the random mystery hairs... ... gross, but, expected in any public body of water. Oh well. Don't worry though, they were all long and obviously head hairs, and not the other kind... uh...) Anyways, after a day of hiking around, this is definitely where I'd want to spend a half hour soaking. (An hour might be too much, but half an hour-- perfect.) Pricewise, it was ... about $9/half hour, $18/full hour... But I have a wonky memory so I could be completely wrong. :0) read more

Cafe Mocha is the gosh darn CUTEST place I've ever set my eyes on. Whether you're looking for a soothing hot tub soak, a cleansing sauna experience, or just a cozy cafe atmosphere, look no further. Firstly, CM is incredibly affordable. Its $9 per half hour in the sauna or the hot tub--and believe me, you really don't need any more time than that! Unless you're set on making yourself into a hot potato. It gets quite hot. The saunas and tubs are of Finnish design, so they look rustic and smell of fresh wood. They're all sectioned off and offer great privacy and a dressing room with a shower . As for the actual cafe, you should really try their hot chocolate with house whip cream. Before I kick the bucket, I should like to have one last cup of their infamous hot chocolate. It's that good. If your there at the right time, usually Friday and Saturday nights, they have traditional music with live local musicians. So fun! And they stay open late. By far my favorite place to take family and friends when they visit Humboldt . read more

I often go to the very tiny cafe when I want a little culture, a warm roaring fire and quiet conversation. I have also used the hot tubs from time to time and enjoy the privacy of a good hot bubbly skinny dip in the squeeky clean hot tubs. The staff are very pleasant and The musicians are stellar. Perfect romantic spot for lovers to sneak away for a nighttime mini vacation leaving the kiddos at home. After your dip you can check out a nice assortment of hot and cold beverages and nosh. Aside from being cash-only, there's nothing bad to say about Cafe Mokka! The tubs are hot, the gardens are magical, and the main building always smells like toasted vanilla and cinnamon. Also you do not HAVE to make a reservation to use to hot tubs or saunas, I'd certainly recommend it. By the time night falls, things are generally filled up! Last time I went (on a Tuesday night) there wasn't even space in their schedule for me to get an extra half hour tacked on to my soak. By far my favorite little coffee shop in Humboldt County! The staff there is very friendly and their coffee is great, especially with their homemade whipped cream. One of the best locations in Arcata. Friendly and professional staff, beautiful interiors, and a litany of events hosted inside the parlor area. The hot-tubs are fenced in for privacy, but are not roofed; this allows for an incredible atmosphere during the frequent Humboldt drizzles. Saunas are similarly private, and with the option to use eucalyptus oil on the heated rocks instead of water, and you can open the doors to shunt the steam out in the event you have misjudged your tolerances. Very cool n funky super local place. Been around since the 80s and it kind of shows, in the best way. You can book a hot tub about one day in advance through their phone line, and we were able to get a mid-afternoon rez for a sunday when we called on a nice Sat night. I think it is pretty busy in the evening, but a 30 min session was just what the Dr ordered after a couple days of camping. Water is HOT, slightly chlorinated (due to the wooden tubs) and very cool to be outside. Nice outdoor rinsing shower, and ample changing rooms for 2 folks or a small family. Staff was brisk and friendly - cool experience! Will try the sauna next time, esp if the weather is chilly! read more
