I was in Arcata for a short trip and Cafe Mokka was the highlight of my trip! The concept was hard to figure out at first, but it's basically a cute coffee shop combined with a courtyard garden that has private hot tub and sauna rentals. The reservations get filled quickly so you have to call the day before to reserve a private hot tub or sauna session. We arrived a bit early to our reservation so we stopped by the coffee shop first and I had to order the hot chocolate with added whipped cream because it looked so good from other reviewers photos. And oh my god, it was the best hot chocolate I've ever had!!! It's so rich with a strong chocolate flavor without being too sweet. And the mountain of homemade whipped cream was such a treat and made the whole drink even more decadent and creamy. I also wanted to note the design of the coffee shop felt like I was being transported to a rustic Scandinavian lodge or something, which was really cool. When it was time for our hot tub reservation, we walked through the courtyard to our hot tub and changing area. Each reservation gets their own private hot tub so you don't need to share with anyone else. The space is completely private and can't be seen from anyone outside in the courtyard. It was really nice because the hot tub area had no roof and was open to the air, so you could enjoy the sky and trees feel like you're relaxing "outdoors," and there was even a heated outside shower to rinse off before changing back. The whole thing was such a unique experience and I kept thinking about that hot chocolate, so I had to come one more time the next day before my flight to have it again because I don't know when I'll ever be in Arcata again. We came here towards the end of our night, and I can see why my SIL wanted everyone to come here. The Hot chocolate was really good. Space is a little cramped in the front with our big group, but once we got rolling into our groups to go out to the back it was fine. The hot tubs were soo relaxing. BIG, they were soo big! I love it here! What works: -- the prices for the tubs and drinks are so reasonable! The drinks are far cheaper than what you'd find at a chain cafe -- the hot tubs are private, clean, and comfortable. I really appreciate that they're outdoors and surrounded by trees -- your hot tub time is dedicated to soaking and showering--not changing. They allot an additional half hour for you to be in the changing room, which means that there's no rush to get dressed and more time in the hot tub! -- really friendly and helpful staff -- great variety of drinks. They have something good for coffee lovers, tea drinkers, and kids -- there's the occasional cat that roams around -- the pond in the center of the cafe, and the proximity to downtown, make this a really beautiful and convenient spot to visit -- lots of parking nearby! What didn't work: -- no complaints on my end! I walked in with my well-behaved service animal and was immediately told that he could not be there. I was real impressed with this place. It's a nice and cozy cafe with a large yard and pond in the back. It also serves as a Finnish spa of some sort with hot tubs and saunas. We ended up booking a hot tub for 1/2 hour and we found it to be super relaxing, private, and clean. The hot chocolate there was reaaaallll good! Such a cool spot!! I've never heard of a cafe with private tubs and saunas and now I can't get it out of my head. The cafe is decorated with Finnish touches and feels like a place to retreat and find solace during a storm. The energy is welcoming and warm, and the outside atmosphere is even more delightful. You can rent a private tub for $30 for half an hour, and the tubs are clean and indeed very private. We loved our experience and would love to return next time I'm in the area! The front façade is so cute! Flowers growing over the entryway and an old style wooden door. The menu is on a white board with fairly basic offerings. I recommend ordering "in". The following comments reflect ordering in The hot chocolate is awesome! It's rich and creamy. Though it does not need the whipped cream(extra$), the whipped cream is just really neat to see flowing over the edge of the cup. The matcha latte is smooth and flavorful. I would say, though, that it is not too sweet, if any sweetness exists at all. They do have sugar and non-sugar sweetener at the counter to the side. Ordered the Sumatra coffee (when ready it was called "drip"). Nicely surprised that it is flavorful, yet mild (not a lot of creamer required) Ooh. Just saw a double mocha served and it was just a work of art. Cup size looks decent as well. Sitting inside, there is music playing, likely a feed from Europe. We were able to book something for the morning after we called. They open at 11 and the first reservation is at 11:30! We arrived a little early and got to go in as soon as we checked in for hour-long soak. They are cash-only, so be prepared! We spent a slightly drizzly morning in the tubs under the gorgeous trees. As soon as you walk-in you feel the warmth of a Swedish coffee house. The ambiance is cozy, quiet and intimate. We had made a reservation the day before, for a sauna and hot tub session. We approach counter person, and he checked us in right away. He gave us the direction which was pretty easy to find. each dressing room is very simple and clean. The hot tub water was super clear, they have a shower that you can take before and after with hot and cold water The sauna was very hot with also a private shower to use at your convenience. We did go in and out since it was very hot. It was pretty relaxing before our camping weekend We will definitely come back!! This place is incredible. The traditional hot tubs and sauna's are so relaxing. It's a must stop anytime one traveling through Arcata.

We stopped in around 4p taking a break from our drive back from the coast. The chalet feel of the main room was cozy. They have hot baths available to book in the back with a nice little pond and patio to sit outside. My husband had a drip coffee and I ordered a cappuccino. Sadly both tasted burnt and the scone we shared was very dry and flavorless. I'm afraid our experience felt like we paid for and got the end of the pot and day old left overs. called on thursday to make a reservation for two the following friday afternoon. they set us up for a 30 min sauna and then a 30 min hot tub appointment. the sauna room has a separate dressing room outside, which has a shower. the sauna session comes with 30 min to use indoor shower and dressing room. the hot tub has a separate dressing room. there is an outdoor shower next to the hot tub, so the shower is not inside the dressing room. overall it was a nice and relaxing experience i suggest bringing a towel, sandals and toiletries. read more

You walk in off the Arcata street and are transported to the middle of a fantasy forest complete with a pond in the middle, but before that you're in a cozy cottage that makes awesome chocolate treats and coffee. I absolutely love Cafe Mokka, we rented the hot tub for two people for an hour and it was amazing. It is reasonably priced and so peaceful and private. The hot tubs have a tall privacy fence so you feel secluded and you can see the stars from many the hot tub. You can turn on the jets and it makes for a very nice massage. Please note that it is Cash only. Only thing this place could improve on is accepting card - even if they charged a fee. I would have loved to buy a hot cocoa after we got out of the hot tub, but I didnt have any additional cash. Towards the end of the night the floor in the changing room is kind of wet so bring flip flops. They have an outdoor shower with both cold and warm water which is great. I felt at home as soon as I walked into Cafe Mokka. What a little gem! The cafe is designed like a little cottage nestled in the woods, complete with all the little details like ornamental wood carvings, a fireplace, and a little pond outside the window. The environment was perfect for a conversation with a friend, reading a book, or just simply treating oneself to a warm, tasty beverage. My mocha (mokka) was delightful, rich, and very reasonably priced! The staff was very friendly and helpful! I only visited for a coffee, but I'm excited to try out the spa portion of Cafe Mokka one of these days! Disappointed - I've been here 2 times, years ago, I tried to call yesterday to make a reservation for the same day since they don't take reservations any other day but the phone line kept saying busy. It wasn't until 12:15 or so when I got something other than a busy line and that was their voicemail saying they were already fully booked for the day. Sitting by the pond in their zen-like garden is particularly relaxing. The carefree vibe that this place exudes has been drawing in a myriad of patrons for over thirty years. Many of them come to use their hot tubs or saunas which certainly are handy in the typical nippy Humboldt weather. Mind you, spots are limited so the wise thing to do is to book ahead of time especially when HSU is in session. I have been going to Cafe Mokka for many years now. It's always been my go-to for many reasons. First- it is exceptionally unique in its atmosphere and personality. As soon as you walk up the front porch steps you are transported to another world. An older, simpler, beautiful European world. Their seating inside and gorgeous outdoor courtyard and pond make for the perfect setting to socialize, read, work on artwork or homework, or perhaps just sit and be at peace. The interior walls are adorned with Finnish carvings, unique instruments, paintings and even a train set mounted on the ceiling that occasionally does a few laps around the cafe (mini horn tooting and all!) Second- the drinks are always divine. I go here a lot and bounce around the menu, but every single time, I am blown away by the quality and flavor of everything they serve. They even offer some fresh baked goods and pastries to nibble on (the thumbprint cookies, peanut butter cookies, and scones are all vegan by the way) that are made by a bakery up the street that very morning. Third- their prices are unbeatable. If you too reminisce on the days when you could order a latte that's less than $7, then this is the place for you. Nobody- and I mean absolutely nobody- offers these prices anymore. Fourth and last- it's not just a cafe, it's also a hot tub and sauna spot! I've done both many times and I think I prefer the sauna but most people i talk to prefer the hot tubs. Enjoy an evening under the starry sky, surrounded by beautiful trees and immersed in a large wooden tub. If hot tubbing and sauna-going isn't your thing, then rest easy knowing they keep a number of prominent up to date newspapers and magazines available for communal use. The New Yorker, the New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, you name it. Board games? They have those too. I highly recommend this one of a kind cafe experience. Ive been here twice and the first time it was super quaint and almost fairy tail like. The inside is all wood and truly beautiful. While the outside in the back has a pond and fairy lights. The frogs were crazy loud making you feel like you have stepped out of the hustle and bustle of life to just breathe and enjoy the moment. The second and most recent time i got to take someone with me who I got to share the memory with hoping it was just as cool as i remembered and it was.
