A friend recommended I check out Cafe Brio - and she was right! I ordered a large cold brew with room for cream. While I was waiting, I was eyeballing the baked goods and other food items that Cafe Brio serves. My friend is a big fan of their Chocolate Chip cookies. But I am more of an Oatmeal Cookie fan - and they have a tasty looking Oatmeal-Currant cookie. Drink came up, and I added some Half n' Half to it. Delicious cold brew! And strong! Man, I was bouncing off the walls for several hours after drinking that! I came back in the evening after dinner - and bought one of the Oatmeal-Currant cookies for dessert! I really enjoy omelette, especially some of the ones I've had in France, but without a doubt, the asparagus omelette at Cafe Brio was the best omelette I've had in my life! Wish I knew how they did it. The rest of the breakfast was good too. We'll be back next time we're in the area. read more

Just went to grab breakfast with my mom, ordered a chocolate croissant and a 16oz vanilla breve. My croissant was cold like it had just come out of a refrigerator and when the foam on my drink dissipated i found it covered in black flakes (not coffee grind though). Called to let them know because usually businesses care about the quality of their food- manager told us that we have to ask for a warmed croissant (i have literally never asked before and it has always been warmed and the croissant wasn't just not warm, it was cold). She also said that the black flakes were vanilla bean but i tasted them and they were crunchy burnt flakes of something not even remotely comparable to vanilla bean. i've always been impressed with brio but they entirely blew me off when i tried to let them know. read more

Cafe Brio, despite your new facelift and pleasant ambiance, the last several times I've come in for coffee or food I have been sorely disappointed. Prices continue to climb while quality has been sorely lacking. Today I paid $7!! for a baguette sandwich that contained ONE piece of ham, a piece of limp lettuce and a slice of Swiss cheese. Such a sad sandwich. Several weeks ago I was served the most abysmal espresso I have ever seen; sloppy and unappetizing. What a shame. The bread, however continues to be delicious. read more

I had breakfast today at Brio. I ordered eggs on potatoes with a Chai Latte. I just wanted a small filling meal with protein. My plate came fast. My scrambled eggs had been scrambled on a grittle, I could tell because they were flat and folded. My potatoes were over cooked little squares of dried up potatoes. The eggs and potatoes had a horrible flavor of grease, and that of food that had been cooked on a grittle with too much old grease. I considered returning it thinking it will give me diarrhea but I was hungry and didn't want to be a complainer. Low and behold here I am 6 hours later with horrible GI pain and diarrhea. However the Chia was great. I am so disappointed to pay $20.00 for a breakfast that made me sick. Brio is a no go for me in the future. read more

We stopped by Cafe Brio for breakfast. The eggs were nicely cooked and although a bit crispy for my tastes, the croissant was good. The bacon was Neiman Ranch and was quite good. The oat milk lattes we had were quite tasty as well. There were 3 of us and we each had a breakfast meal and a coffee. With tip it was around $60. FYI: be ready to mask up. They bake all there pastries, bread etc. they have a small bar for beer and wine etc. I ordered a brunch item that was out of this world delish, it was the Croissant Eggs Benedict. I'll say it is quite good bread, and it has a lovely vibe when its not crammed with bikers, families, couples, and device users. Okay, if you have the money and aren't particularly discriminating in your taste for baked goods. It is typical Humboldt fare, over cooked and tasteless. But it is edible, and the ambiance is good. I have tried several of the breakfast meals, ever hoping things will improve, but they seem to be able to maintain a level of medicrity regardless of what they are serving. They don't strive to outdo themselves with their coffee. We mostly go there because we can take our dog and sit outside in the morning. So I gave it a three star. read more

Just have a lovely dinner at Brio on a Saturday night. Walked past Mazotti's on the way, and it was packed. Brio has a more reasonable crowd, and the food was substantially better. The wait staff were a bit slow, but the food was phenomenal and the environment was such that the speed made for a very 'Mediterranean' eating experience. Spent several wonderful hours noshing, drinking, and enjoying the company of close friends. Highly recommend spending an evening here. The prices also couldn't be beat. read more

Went back for breakfast and was better prepared this time. The breakfast offerings are just fine; I can't quite put my finger on it but they just don't make me excited. My poached egg on a potato-rosemary tart was okay. Not sure how they poach their eggs, but the texture was different from any other I've had. But where Brio shines is in their baking. The bread is delicious. The croissants are quite good. And the coffee is good. I love Blue Bottle coffee. Cafe Brio uses their coffee and brews it using the pour-over method, which is quite similar the Chemex way I brew at home. They also make a decent espresso drink; my cappuccino was good. (I'll opt for something from the espresso bar most times because it's something I don't make at home.) I wish this place was closer so I could buy their amazing bread every week. The prices for loaves of bread are reasonable, too. And I'm waiting impatiently for my next trip so I can have another croissant. read more

Wonderful spot for pastries and bread. Excellent croissants, good coffee. A pleasant local spot on a corner with ample outdoor seating. Since they have remodeled, they expanded just a bit; might have done a better job with the windows. So while Brio is a high quality bakery, and some of their meals are quite tasty, a significant drawback is that they charge premium prices in a crowded, self-serve environment that even has customers busing their own tables. So, if you spend $40 to $50 for lunch for two, you order at the counter, and they will serve you at your seat. You have to scramble for your own silverware and napkins, and then, when finished, you have to attempt to get your dirty dishes into the bucket of other dirty dishes, which is quite unsanitary. Invariably one's arm, hand, or sleeve will touch the dubious busing bucket. Some of the menu items are very nice, still on the pricey side, but good. Their fries are similar to Belgian-style. A complaint: an Asian-style slaw/salad with chicken priced at $16 was served with cold dark meat chicken. We were very surprised that it was not chicken breast. A burger priced at $15 was tiny and embarrassingly shrunken so that it was hiding amid a giant dwarfing bun. Lunches do not impress, sorrily. Stick to baking. Consider, at the prices charged, ditching the self-serve and providing full service at the same cost. Brio is overpriced. read more

Cafe Brio caught us by surprise! We went there for brunch in our way to Redwoods National Park from San Francisco, and I have to say their food is on par with high quality San Francisco Brunch cafes. We got the Croque Madame, California Benedict, some kind of bread pudding with berries and croissant, chocolate and almond croissant. All amazing! We enjoyed it so much that we went there for lunch in our way back. I have to say I liked the brunch menu better. I ordered the chicken puffed pie and it was too heavy for me. Friday evenings at the Brio on the plaza - usually closed in the evenings and now open for dinner just one night a week - if you have not been to Brio for a Friday evening at the bistro it is highly recommended. A fresh local organic menu for the one evening that puts a wonderful new spot on the map for Friday night dinner in our town. Tasty small plates and appetizers, delicious entrées, a small but wonderful wine list and yummy desserts make this casual and small eatery a must try one Friday night soon. We had reservations this past Friday evening at 7pm, dinner for two - we were greeted and seated within a minute and our server Raoul was friendly, professional and an amazingly thoughtful person. The menu is small, varies every week and fresh from the local farmers market - offering a couple small plate choices and usually a vegetarian, poultry, fish and red meat entree option. I had the chicken pot pie, simply wonderful and the pastry shell was beyond delicious. My wife ordered the vegetarian choice; artichokes, asparagus and mushrooms over faro grain with an amazing sauce. Both dishes we agreed we would have been equally happy with if we had ordered the other. There was a single dessert choice the evening we were there, a deconstructed strawberry shortcake and it was light and delicious - however the bakery case is right there and it usually has a few yummy treats left from the day. We ordered two appetizers, two entrées, a bottle of wine, dessert and even got a few pastries from the bakery case for extra treats for the weekend. It's not cheap and worth every cent, but by no means expensive for the quality and for Humboldt. Dinner for two with everything, a nice bottle of wine and a 20% tip - $140. Wow. We stayed in Arcata for a weekend recently and happened upon this cafe for a snack. We ended up coming back four more times that weekend, feasting through the breakfast and lunch menus, and sampling the baked goods, coffee and mimosas. It was that good. Now that I've left Arcata, I wish it wouldn't take me a six-hour drive to get back. If you happen to stop here, be sure to have the chicken pot pie, croque monsieur, and the mimosa. Latte on a foggy day...I was up here labor day weekend and really enjoyed the atmosphere, food and coffee. It's your quintessential Arcata spot - people watching, buskers, fancy flavorful coffee, lazy Saturday and Sunday (and Monday) folk, a crisp breeze and some local gems. These gems can be in your salad or sitting at the table next to you! I had the mac and cheese and a poached egg and it was to die for. It's a cute little space to meet for coffee, a quick bite or snack on something sweet. The menu had more than one thing I wanted to try which is a good sign and I love the little side area or coffee bar you can sit at and read if you're not ordering food.
