Yep, this is another review draft I wrote roughly a year ago and then sat on until it was *close* to irrelevant, though hopefully not completely so - I'd been hearing for a while that they had the best torta ahogadas, so, now quite a while ago, I went and confirmed that, and at the time, I would say that was accurate (I have no particular reason to think that might have changed, though it did go from $15 to, I just checked, $16.) Or just slightly more (2.75% more, to be exact) if you pay by credit card. So my first impression when I walked in was, in the best possible way, mainly that I heard almost nothing but Spanish being spoken. All the employees spoke English, obviously, at least everyone in the front, but they certainly weren't speaking it to each other, nor to most of their clientele. It felt like I was in Mexico, which might have been partially also why the torta ahogada was indeed probably the best I've had in the area. Great bread, great carnitas, great spicy onions, great sauce (they warned me it was spicy - as someone who likes a bit of spice, but not so much it overwhelms... this was a perfect amount of spice.) And the sauce actually properly fully covered the sandwich so it was wet enough to cut easily (not every place gets that right, especially on to-go orders). Plus they give you enough extra sauce to dip the included chips into, as well. Quite a filling sandwich - totally worth the price. Can't speak to the service, as it was to-go order. (Specifically, to go to Port City Tavern down the street, so I could pair it with a couple cocktails, as the drink choices here are about exactly what you'd expect for a hole-in-the-wall Mexican place.) read more

I've been driving past this place for over a year, and I finally got the chance to try it when a client took me out to dinner. I ordered the chicken and shrimp quesadilla, and it was pretty flavorful and definitely hit the spot! The only surprise was that they serve crema instead of sour cream--not a dealbreaker, just different. Service was a 10/10--super friendly and fast. Parking was easy, and the prices were reasonable. Mojarra al mojo ajo or Tilapia in garlic sauce is seriously one of the best fried tilapia I've ever had. I got the dish with shrimp cooked in the garlic sauce as well. It's super super garlic and flavorful. The garlic sauce is sautéed mixed onions with peppers and garlic. The fish was cooked to perfection. Extra crispy and so delicious my three year old ate half the meat lol. The beans are very well seasoned and were delicious. The rice was above and beyond typical Mexican rice. I love that the plate had real crema vs sour cream. Fresh guacamole and tortillas came with the meal. The service was outstanding. Small clean taqueria with comfortable booth seating. The complimentary chips and salsa were excellent. The salsa had a very unique peppery flavor with added onion and cabbage. Even the limes they brought out were key limes vs regular. This place is very very good and takes the time to make things above and beyond. My wife had enchiladas and their enchilada sauce was well crafted and much better than any other typical Mexican restaurant. I highly recommend Canadas Grill. read more

Picked up food to go on a Saturday evening, Called the order in. Service over the phone was great. Very kind and double checked to make sure the order was correct. Food was good. Beans and rice were super tasty. My daughter loved the shrimp dish she ordered. Enchiladas were a hit. My chicken could have been a little more tender and the veggies diced a little bit smaller. Price was ok... a little expensive for enchiladas but that is the sign of the times. I still think cheese enchiladas should not cost an arm and a leg. Would definitely recommend compared to other establishments in the area. read more

A Long Beach local favorite of mine. I've gone many of times hungover and craving their carne en su jugo to heal me and bring me back to life. I've also brought visitors and travelers to Cañadas to impress them with their molcajete which is perfect for someone who enjoys making the perfect bite! The staff feels like family and the food is always prompt, fresh and hot. They do their specials so well, that their foundational items that are usually on a Mexican menu ( tacos, burritos, quesadillas, nachos) don't stand out. That being said it's still one of my favorites and a recommendation of mine always. read more

I've had this place saved to try for quite sometime... finally checked it out today. I went in to place my order to take it home. It was about a 15 minute wait for it. I got a cheese enchilada, beef taco and bean & cheese burrito. I'm particular when it comes to my enchilada sauce and I liked this one, that's not always the case when I try different Mexican restaurants. The beef taco was good. My mom tried a bite of the meat and said it tasted like there was cinnamon in it. It did have a different taste but I'm not sure what seasoning it was. They sprinkled parmesan cheese on it as the cheese. I wish it was shredded cheese instead. By the time I got to the burrito I was full so I just had a couple of bites. It was good and CHEESY! That's what I like. :-) All in all, I would go back.... I'm just not sure if it will be anytime soon. I have quite a long list of new-to-me Mexican restaurants I still want to try! read more

Came here on a Sunday around 5pm. Wait was 15 minutes. It's on the smaller restaurant scale inside so might be close seated with other customers. They had TVs playing sports. One bathroom. We ordered the ceviche of camarón tostada. Only one tostada which wasn't enough so I finished the rest with the complimentary chips and salsa. The camarón botana was good it's wrapped with bacon. The drinks are big sizes. Taste was good for everything. Service was okay it was busy and our server forgot to bring out our tortillas for one of the orders. As well, took a while to ask if we needed anything. This is my second time here with my family so I'll give it an approval. read more

Awesome customer service. Food is incredible. I had the pozole before (sooooo good!!!), and everyone raves about de carne en su jugo dish. So I had it to go. DELICIOUS. The place looked very clean, the smell was INCREDIBLE, like awesome dishes made with love. The restaurant is located in a plaza with private parking lot. The waitress were spectacular and it shows that they love where they work. My husband got a carne asada taco. I need to come with my friend Allie too. HIGHLY recommended!!! Came here with my wife around 9pm on a Friday, and there was a a good amount of ppl, but we still did not have to wait for a table. The restaurant has very nice staff whi were very attentive. The food was amazing. I felt like I was in my childhood home eating my mother's food. I had Coctel de Camaron, and my wife a taco and sope combo plate. Everything was so good and the food came out pretty quickly too. We were very full by the end of the meal but still toom home a cup of horchata which was perfectly sweet without being too heavy. I had driven by this restaurant so many times, so decided to finally try it for lunch after an errand at the nearby post office. I was able to find a parking spot in the lot. The restaurant isn't too too big, but is divided into two main dining areas with several tables/booths, as well as a countertop near the cashier. I loved all of the foreign currency on the wall and mini flags hanging. Service was attentive, with good Spanish and English spoken. I was seated at a booth with chips, salsa, and the menu. I do wish they had the thicker/fresher kind of totopos (tortilla chips), but that's just personal preference and this thin type is more common in the U.S. I ordered the two specialties featured on the sign outside: torta ahogada and carne en su jugo. The torta ahogada was massive and bathed in lots of sauce (as expected), but I appreciated that it was piping hot as many of the tortas ahogadas I had in Guadalajara were cold. The bread was also clearly toasted prior to assembling the torta. I will say however that the sauce was quite spicy, way more so than I anticipated, and I can handle a decent amount of spice, so be forewarned! The carne en su jugo was also very tasty, and accompanied by a plate of cabbage, cilantro, lime, roasted chilis, and pickled onion. I had a choice of corn or flour tortillas as well. Ultimately I wasn't able to finish both dishes so had leftovers. Food was very tasty albeit not cheap; would still recommend for some great Mexican food! This place seems very popular and had many patrons during a weekday lunch. read more

There were several wet burritos ordered that people loved, a humongous asada quesadilla that was enough for two, and the whole fried fish that was delicious. This family owned and run restaurant is a must try, super cute and cozy place with various options to choose from. As soon as we walked in we were greeted by the ladies at the front counter and quickly escorted us to our booth, and another lady delivered fresh chips and salsa (loves the teamwork). We ordered a cocktail de pulpo, asada burrito, and carne asada con chilaquiles. All three dishes were a good portion, the chilaquiles were a bit spicy, wished they would have mentioned that on the menu. Canadas Grill is a favorite of mine and in my food rotation now, so happy we tried this unassuming restaurant off of Anaheim. Carne En Su Jugo - first time trying this dish here and I am in love! A tasty soup/broth with beef, bean with tortilla + accouterments. Really soothes the soul and feels as if abuelita made it for me. Combo Quesadilla - FAT and packed with goodness and delicious flavor. Had to pack half of this one to go. Potato taco - Also packed with flavor, a good portion for me if I am also trying to devour some carne en su jugo. Chile Relleno - Another favorite dish of mine to get when eating at Mexican restaurants and this one is good. The micheladas, ceviches, molcajete's all look good when other tables order it, however it's hard to stray from the carne en su jugo. There's a good amount of seating inside, service is great, and parking isn't too hard to find in the plaza. Come for good portions and a comfort meal of steak soup. read more
