Staff was nice. Cute small coffee place. Went in to get a couple slices of cake for dessert. Got the gingerbread lingonberry and chocolate forest cakes. Worst cake ever. It could be flavor anything and it would be ruined by how dry the cake is.

We came in to try and find a cake for an event. This small bakery is so cute. We came at the end of the day but they still had a good selection of pastries and cakes. The service was great. They were able to answer our questions and assist us in ordering a cake. And the cake was pretty and delicious!! When I am in town again, I would love to come back and try more items.

Apparently, it rains a lot in this town. Plane landing: rain Dinner last night: rain Breakfast: rain Okay, you get it. This is a wonderful little bakery with plenty to offer and many great products. Nordic themed, it's a delightful taste of old country baking. Prepare yourself, however, I believe they do things extra-sweet over there, because that's how everything in here tastes. We had to abandon our plans for the morning, so our first stop was here, which went swimmingly well (see what I did there). They make a fabulous lingonberry tart, but the items that really stand out are the cream puff, the princess cake and the onion cheese puff. Our group found the coffee to be so-so, but I really enjoyed my Shot in the Dark, cold brew. The service is excellent and the workers phenomenal. They showed great patience and were quite helpful to us newbies! 04/25

We came to Byen just because we were in the area and wanted to try a new bakery. We were so pleasantly surprised. The first thing we noticed is that all the food is priced well. We didn't feel like we were getting gouged for a cookie or a cheese puff. The coffee was priced pretty standardly. In terms of quality, all the food was great, we had the jalapeño cheese puff, the sprinkle cookie and the thumbprints (I think that's what they call them). Only the thumbprints weren't for me. The coffee was solid but half of my 16 oz cup was just frothed milk so it was more like 8 oz, which was a little dissapointing. You'd expect the parking situation here to be difficult but when we came here the street parking wasn't bad, seemed like most people just walked in on foot so the street parking wasn't packed. There wasn't a ton of seating so plan for maybe having to do a to-go order. But they do have both indoor and outdoor seating so that was nice

Love this bakery! They have a lot of delicious options! My husband and I came on a rainy day. We were able to find some street parking which can be difficult depending on the day/time. Service is friendly and patient. They have indoor tables/seating perfect to enjoy your pastry/coffee there. They have such a big variety of yummy treats and breakfast sandwiches available. I also really loved that they have some cute retail things for sale as well. Breakfast sandwich, mini swedish gooey cake, and some of their pastries were a big highlight for us. I definitely want to come back and try their cakes!

This is the second time I've been here with my friend. We tried several cake slices, pastries, cookies and croissants: my favorite were the jalapeno cheese puff, almond cookie, and chocolate cake. Staff was friendly and patient as I pick what I wanted to try/bring home. There's enough tables inside and outside to sit and enjoy our late lunch/dessert. The bakery was located in a quiet part of the neighborhood too, and there's always parking right out front. Def coming back to try other baked goods from here.

Smells so good inside! Lots of savory options. Would def recommend this place. We tried the Jalapeño cheese and onion pastry and the pecan sticky bun.

We had a very unfortunate experience at Byen. We came at 6:45 on Saturday (15 minutes after they opened), and there was literally nothing available. To make it worse, when we asked the cashier how long it would be she walked as slowly as she could to ask the baker. We were told it would be another 15 minutes. Why open at 6:30 when you aren't going to be ready until 7? Super disappointed as we were very excited based on other reviews, but this was a very poor experience.

Locally charming and Scandinavian goodies made with love! Selection of shortbreads was a lot of fun with such affordable prices-- I enjoyed the buttery goodness and can't wait to see what my coworkers think! The pistachio eclairs was LOADED with pistachios! Wish the praline cake was a little less sweet but the Caramel flavor and the moist chocolate cake was addictive! Thank you to the friendly employee helping us out!

Located right across the street from Seattle Pacific University, this is a bakery specializing in Swedish breads and pastries. We came because we recently learned about Semlor, and Byen Bakeri was one of the few places that served it. It was a brioche style bun, filled with whipped cream, and a slice of marzipan - so delicious, as was their cardamom latte, and cheesy jalapeño bread. If I lived closer to the area, I would come here all the time! The only downside is parking kinda sucks here, as is typical of old Seattle neighborhoods. I will certainly be back for more of their yummy breads, pastries, and seasonal coffee!

A friend has been wanting to take me here and so, we did! Street parking wasn't too difficult and the case was already sort of picked through but still loads of treats to choose from. I had a coffee and sweet roll that was covered in pecans. The roll had plenty of cinnamon and the perfect sweetness. Service very accommodating to answer questions and patient with my inability to make a decision. A few tables inside and outside contributed to a cool bakery vibe. Cookies, cakes and other items were available. Looking forward to going back and trying more of these items!

Uh oh, did this bakery actually steal Bakery Nouveau's thunder of being my personal favorite bakery that I've ever tried (so far)??? I think it did! :O Granted, as much as I love croissants (especially the twice-baked one at BN) I think I love danishes more. With that being said, the danishes here are *aMAziNG*! I tried the lingonberry and marionberry ones and what I really like about them is that the fruit fillings aren't overly sweetened and I could actually see some fruit bits. Perfectly soft and chewy danish bread and it even has some croissant-like inner layers to it. I also tried the tomato & feta cheese pastry, which leans more towards croissant style with how crispy it is. Though, what's unique about this pastry bread is that it's like a cross between a traditional croissant and a soft parmesan-crusted breadstick....idk how else to explain it lol. This along with the tomato and feta.....I mean, do I have to directly tell you that this one is a must-try?? :p Pastries will bring you back by about $7 each, which is a bit high compared to the pricing at other bakeries. The thing is that these pastries are really hefty!! I was particularly curious on how much the danishes weigh (these were exceptionally heavy) and using my kitchen scale they're about 1/2 lb each! Lol. Very large pastries as well so easily sharable (well maybe not the tomato & feta cheese pastry as I inhaled that one in like 2 minutes). Make your way here please! :)

I can't believe this place doesn't have lines going out the door. The stuff they make is phenomenal and creative. The twice-baked croissant and the quilt were amazing. There is also a wide selection and the only problem is choosing. The only reason I'm not giving this a 5 rating is because they were a little inefficient with the espresso drinks. One person was doing all the work at the counter (including making drinks) while others seemed to not be busy, which caused a long delay between getting the pastries and getting the coffee. read more

I want to love this place. I want to give them my money. But they close at 5:00 and no normal working person can stop in and get bread for the evening. I get it: they start early, they have staff to pay, they get morning business from SPU, being a pâtisserie is more profitable than being a boulangerie, etc. It works for them, but not for working customers. I'm not big on sweets but all of theirs look great. I've had their breads and croissants and both are great. I really like the quality of their breads and their easy demi-baguette mixed bag. The croissant was very buttery. Again, high quality and seems lovely if you have time for breakfast or before work. But instead of giving them my money for their bread quality, it will be going to Safeway's bakery instead for flexibility. read more

So I really love the food but the service is soooo slow. They are so understaffed that it makes eating here really difficult. Today after 5 minutes in line I went across the street to a food truck. Fresh Vietnamese in less time than i waited in line at Byen to not get served. I I really wish they would hire enough people to meet demand as I have only good things to say about the food. This place is going to be the death of me, I'm sure........because I am addicted to their ham & cheese croissants! I try to get here as early as possible when I want to grab one of these deliciously buttered and flaky little bastards because they sell out quick! Hell, I have been known to buy a few at a time so I can eat one for lunch AND dinner. I'm not a chunky broad, but I will be soon if I keep this up. Byen, I love you so hard! read more

The baguettes here are so good! They are the perfect thickness, crisp on the outside, and very soft on the interior. We have also tried several other types of bread and cookies at Byen...all are delicious and the service has always been very good! read more

**Excellent** Plenty of choices, everything is not only beautiful - but delicious - I'll be coming back here a LOT. Great to see traditional choices and lots of creativity. It's a nice airy space too, not cramped. So glad I found Byen - I can't think of all the great descriptions this place deserves! Parking right in front, super easy, or just walk up the street. It was very pricey for the quality. The chocolate chip cookie was stale, even after warming it up it was still very hard and grainy. But the cinnamon roll was very good, after we warmed it up. read more

Delicious coffee and food! We had the Monte Cristo, Quiche with sausage, and latte with Lingonberry syrup. All wonderful! Can't wait to cone back and try the Vanilla Cardamom Latte. My kiddos loved it too. read more

My husband tried the twice baked almond croissant (his usual favorite) and it was a tad dry. I wanted to get a scone with jam for myself, but they no longer make them! I considered the marionberry strudel, but it had cream cheese in it, which does not appeal to me. And it was the only flavor with cream cheese - the other flavors (cherry and apple) didn't have any cream cheese in them. read more

Definitely the best marzipan in town! It is nice to see some of the pastries I know from my childhood while living in Europe. I tried their sandwich menu for the first time the other day and was quite disappointed. It took for ever for the kitchen to prepare it and it was not very good. I will come back, but will stick with the sweets only. read more

kringle, you haunt my dreams and midsection, but you are worth every piece of almondy deliciousness. also, the staff is super nice. the selection is huuuge and plentiful as well. went there mid/late saturday afternoon and pretty much got everything our hearts desired (lingonberry danish, kringle, cardamon something-or-another). read more

Interesting location but awesome bakery with unique items like a brioche with lingoberries, huge thin chocolate chip cookies and almond type pastry things. They actually have a lot but those 3 are the ones my friends and I opted for. Clean, cute, decently priced. They also have fresh baguettes and cakes. Nice little bakery. read more

This place is yum! I love their usage of cardamom!!! Their pastries are so unique and have a Scandinavian twist, however being Scandinavian (I'm from Finland, bf from Iceland) I have to say they are not authentically Scandinavian. But I do appreciate their efforts. Also their lunch baguette sandwiches are perfect. I love going over to SPU now since I know I will have to stop by Byen and get a treat! read more

Oh my goodness. This place is dangerously, wonderfully delicious. With so many delightful, tempting pastries, it's often a challenge to choose! Be sure to get the Kringle if you're new to Scandinavian pastries, but on Fridays, go early and get the Weekender. If you love maple and bacon, this is the next best thing (if not better) than heading down to Portland for a Voodoo bacon maple donut. Fair warning: it's not light on calories! They do run out quickly, so I recommend stopping by in the morning. The bakery offers surprisingly ample seating in a small space, so I occasionally meet up with friends to enjoy a cappuccino and a pastry. The staff are truly wonderful, helpful, friendly, and genuinely enjoy their jobs (they must get pastry perks). Just keep in mind you will probably need to run a marathon to work off whatever you eat here, but it's worth it. read more

I am SO glad I stopped! The coffee was delicious, every last bite of my coffee cake strip was amazing! It was sweet, soft, flaky, and yet still moist! It was a perfect combo, and the perfect start to the day! The woman behind the counter was so sweet and helpful, and to top it all off, the store is beautiful!! The only problem I had was trying to figure out what to pick! The case holds SO MANY options. They all look so good! read more

These guys are my local bakery. Fresh bread every day, great sandwiches and cookies the size of your face! I'm slowly working my way through the dessert case and I haven't been disappointed yet. The space is kind of small so it can fill up quickly around lunch but the ladies behind the counter are always super friendly and patient while I make up my mind. read more

This is my go-to lunch spot, as I work a few blocks away. There are a number of good choices nearby, but the sandwiches at this bakery are SO GOOD. I always order them on one of their baguettes (rosemary is my favorite), and they are huge! A half sandwich is the size of a (largish) normal sandwich elsewhere. The pastries are to die for, so I often (always...) order something small to snack on while I wait for my to-go order. I could try a new pastry every day for the next year and never have the same thing twice. So many mouthwatering options! Also, the employees are always so nice! read more

This place was cute. I came here hoping to try a shirley temple cupcake by they didn't have any. Got a Norweigian School Bread instead. It was a cardamom flavored sweet roll with white butter icing, coconut sprinkles and custard. It was pretty good and different too. Prices were a bit high. read more

Byen Bakeri is all ready my favorite bakery in Seattle, but they far exceeded all previous expectations when they made a custom order of sandwich cakes (Smorgastarta) for a birthday party I was hosting. These are not only beautiful edible masterpieces (strangers at the beach were drawn to stop by and ask about them), but it is delicious, light, healthy and fresh tasting. I had some cake left over and it still tastes amazing three days later. The bread was done so right that it hasn't become stale at all. I don't normally eat much gluten or dairy but these are totally worth it!! Tip: tastes pretty good with honey dijon kettle chips crumbled on top...if you are a chip sandwich fan. read more

Enjoyed this place so much that we went here the next day to get another cake! First cake we got was the marzipan with the lemon filling, the next day we picked up some sort of apricot cake that we saw displayed with a missing slice, our cashier let us know that the owner was in and that she can make a whole cake for us in an hour! Great bakery. They don't know how to make a London Fog though. The point of the London Fog is the Earl Grey tea along with the steamed milk and some vanilla. They just used some black tea and steamed milk. Couldn't taste any vanilla if they did use any. Buy the baked goods and get your drink elsewhere. read more

Seattle is known for coffee shops so this trip, we decided to try different coffee shops every day. The Byen Bakeri was the 2nd stop. As soon as we walked in, there is definitely the energy of a coffee house! The place was PACKED -- a very good sign! I was immediately greeted by this friendly gal who told me to take my time as I drooled over the selection of pastries. We ended up ordering an assortment of cream puffs, croissants, and cookies. They were all delicious! Why did I not give this place a 5 star?! Well,... that's because I'm a tough grader and I reserved that "as good as it gets" rating for only one bakery located in Bellevue. OMG!! If you're in Seattle go to this place!!!! Cheap and delicious treats!! I don't even know the name of the pastry I got but it was SO great! The service was amazing and I got to talk to one of the cashiers about what they do with the left over food and the donate the leftovers if they cannot resale them! The space is on the smaller end and 5 of us shared what should have been a 2 person table. The bakery is close to Seattle Pacific University so there were a few students studying there as we ate! I'm still dreaming of my royal almond pastry thing! read more

Established in 2013.

We opened in late October of 2013 and have been graciously welcomed by the community in Queen Anne. We were inspired by passion and continue to be inspired as the bakery grows and changes. Our Baker, Brian, has been studying and creating Norwegian baked goods for over 30 years. He is constantly creating new sweet and savory treats combining flavors and textures that you would never think of. Him and his wife previously owned a bakery out of their home in Marysvile called Gracie's in and out pastries. Gracie's was so much fun that they decided to grow their business and move it in to the city. With the large Scandinavian population in Seattle and Brian's background they decided to open a Norwegian bakery. Byen Bakeri was the most fitting name choice for their bakery, as it means City Bakery in Norwegian.

The Homie ended up selecting a bag of salted licorice (local), cloudberry jam (rare, imported), and Finnish bread cheese (Juusto, domestic from Wisconsin). The coffee was perfectly creamy and smooth without being too sweet. The food was good, nothing that particularly stood out but I'd still come back. Next time I'd probably try the breakfast board since that seems to be a favorite. Overall, it's a nice spot to study or grab a bite or drink with friends, but just keep in mind it can get pretty noisy when it's crowded.

However, I did end up trying one of their seasonal menu items - the Sakura Blossom Cloud Latte. I customized this drink with oat milk, even though the foam has to stay as dairy. The oat milk added a nutty creaminess that I particularly enjoyed. There were notes of the sweet Sakura syrup with a slight saltiness from the cream foam that gives the drink its perfect balance. It was a refreshing drink for a pick-me-up and they only had it for a limited time! My only thing is that I felt some coffee beans at the bottom that may not have been grinded as finely but other than that, the drink was amazing and I would recommend as a good backdrop for a spring walk!

When we brought it up, the response felt very brushed off. It's disappointing because the setting and food have so much potential, but service matters. I'd recommend spending your money elsewhere in Poulsbo--there are plenty of great spots along the main strip that offer both good food and a better overall experience.

Bear, the cutie in the cable knit sweater, sat nestled between Tom Petty and Dolly Parton. The second photo shows a little maple table I sold for $20 at a garage sale ~10 years ago - imagine my surprise seeing it at SparkleBarn. Location, location as they say. Racist Staff I got racially profiled at this place. In the 3 years I have been in Seattle, this is the most horrible racialist incident I encountered. Let me explain the incident so u can understand what happened, I went in to the cafe Sunday early morning. There was one customer in front of me and then there was me. The customer in front just got what she ordered. I was next but I was ignored and the girl behind the counter just went to ask the person who just came in what they wanted. I was looking at her, trying to understand what's happening. Then she made a face and asked me to move away so she can get the other person to the counter. I asked why am I not being served. How come I'm invisible to her. All I got was more annoying faces from her. The customer who came after me apologized to me for what happened to me. The people behind the counter was so openly racist they didn't even care. Shame on this place. If the owners care about racial discrimination they should take action. The person who got served was nice enough to apologize to me, but he is not the one who should apologize. read more

I've watched this bakery starts from birth. Now what may be its 4th year this has replaced my regular go tos. If you are looking for a place with a cook to order breakfast such as a breakfast sandwich with a runny egg, this isn't it. This is the place where you'll get a few varieties of delicious quiche and a variety of other treasures big and small. It's beautiful and Norwegian. read more

Tasty, but a bit on the expensive side. Most of the staff are cordial, though there is 1 gal who can seem a bit pushy, making one feel rushed... Might be the manager or owner, not sure. Personally, I go to a cafe to slow down & relax, not feel rushed/pushed, so I stopped visiting. read more
